not saying this is the right font to use but it's free for commercial use and it looks kind of BladeRunner/oriental/future/mish-mash - which appeals to me. the justification is "coding" snack obviously relates to programming which relates to technology, relates to future, relates to blah, blah, blah.

but, i admit, there's nothing wrong with something that looks traditionally "Chinese" or just a plain helvetica (novelty fonts tend to lose their appeal after a few viewings, i find).

Atari Kids font.png
this was just one of the fonts over at: http://www.fontspace.com/category/asian
877
if you throw around a few ideas of what you want to add then i'll put it all together at the end.

i just wonder if the font should be more of an oriental style because of the chop-sticks. or is that too obvious?

(glad you like it tomos.)

this is a vector "duplicate" so it will scale to whatever size is required. the image below is at 200% of the original raster image.

it's not identical - didn't see the need. as it's vector i can easily change the colours and details if required.

coding-snack-bowl.png
original bitmap image at 200% on the left. vector image on the right.

heheh, brilliant.

I still want to find a larger picture (or vector drawing) of the red Coding Snack bowl.  That red bowl, along with some "Coding Snack"-related text, would look badass on a black shirt.

i could recreate that image if required (assuming the original image is not large enough for t-shirt printing). i'd probably have to modify it enough so it didn't look like a deliberate copy of someone else's work.

(or i could just do an exact duplicate, only larger. depends on the usage rights of the original image.)

well done, skwire. well deserved.

this looks very cool. the edit text with favorite editor is a clever idea (something long overdue for writing online).

the quick select and navigation is an even better idea though. something that has definitely annoyed me on a day-to-day basis.

i'll download and give it a good try today. thanks, Channing.

over at the Guardian, Charlie Brooker sums up how the world is no better for the release of the new iPhone 4...

http://www.guardian....5/iphone-4-apple-new

...just as Jabscreen owners everywhere were running out of apps to compare – and, by extension, anything to talk about – the nice droids at Apple Castle gifted them a whole new branch of conversation: the launch of the Jabscreen 4, which apparently is miles better than a regular Jabscreen, although no one can really explain why. Its most impressive feature is this: simply by existing, it suddenly makes your existing Olde Worlde vanilla Jabscreen seem rubbish. How can you enjoy sliding the little icons around on your Jabscreen 3 when you know that if you had a Jabscreen 4, those very same icons would be slightly sharper? The answer is you can't.

you have an excellent point, that seems to have been completely overlooked, superboyac.

the "iphone", the "ipad", the "ipod". everyone knows the name even if they don't know the specific product (i'm sure there are many people that think it is a single product - that "ip...." wotsit).

who knows the names of competing products? i've heard of the "android" phone or the "google" phone and that's about it.

oh, i'd forgotten about making this post.

nice to see you making educated guesses - but this mystery is solved.

i'm not at home at the moment so don't have all the information and links related to what i found. i now know the track i was after and managed to find it somewhere online taken from an old vinyl recording (can't remember the details at the moment).

the instrument is probably something you've never seen before - it was a revelation to me - it's a Glass Harmonica. so, not a pipe organ nor a synth of any description.

plenty of youtube links. here are a couple:

http://www.youtube.c...p;videos=Blb2-ailvnU

http://www.youtube.c...p;videos=7c6IoiDDJdc

p.s. i'm still searching for the "Survial" theme tune for the natural history programme i remember. seems no one on the planet has heard of it - maybe i was living in an alternative universe up until about the age of 12.

edit:
i've just seen the comment above by logosremoved. so yes, that is correct.

i've finally got around to installing Filehamster. looking throught the settings i see there are the filters you'd expect to have (i just never used them before).

so you can filter by size, extension, name-pattern-match, etc.

FH does lack a context menu for files being watched inside of explorer. or, at least, my old version of the program is lacking that feature.

an extra "bumper case" at the cost of 30 dollars - sounds like the fanboys are going to lap that up. it's just yet another apple branded item they can wear alongside their other apple medals when they are out on apple parade.

personally, i'd happily wear a pair of stilettos and stamp up and down on the iPhone4. maybe that will improve the reception problem.

any true apple fanboy will happily learn to perform the iPhone4 stance so they can still get reception. i've no idea what that looks like but i'm sure it's very "cool".

this is the current layout but it is in flux. the top scroll button press is too hard to bother with, as is the side thumb wheel press (13). so, i suppose it's an exaggeration to say i'm using all 13 buttons.

mxrevolutionbuttonnumbers.jpg

1. left button
2. right button
3. click or freewheel scroll toggle (never really use this - too hard to press)
4. F16
5. middle button (doesn't appear to be recognised as a middle button by some apps, i.e. firefox)
6. F15
7. F13
8. F14
9. Ctrl + Alt + Tab (hotkey for alt tabbing through programs only on current monitor)
11. Alt + Tab (use scroll wheel to select from list)
13. Winkey + Tab (never really use this - too hard to press)
W. scroll up/down (i think this can be used as two "buttons" if i reassign them using uberoptions)

which i now see is only 11 buttons if you discard the scroll wheel.

i've assigned Function keys to the buttons so that i don't run into conflicts elsewhere and it doesn't look like i can assign the X1, X2, etc. additional common mouse buttons that logitech have forgotten about (or uberoptions has forgotten about).

using autohotkey, the Function keys are combined with other buttons or trigger things from double hits.

middle button + scroll = scroll left or right.

middle button + F13 = turn on accelerated mouse, hit middle button again to turn off.

F13 = Alt + left

F14 = Alt + right

F15 quick double hit = close window

F16 quick double hit = back key (use because alt + left is not the same as the Back key or "up a directory key").

i wanted to combine and create more functions with the F key button combinations but i need to think about it. i've also had to try and assign the buttons in a way that allows them to be "easily" pressed simultaneously with another button.

i've not used keyboard combinations like Ctrl + right mouse button as they are already used throughout all the programs i use.

p.s.
i was also using StrokeIt for a few more mouse functions but i've not got around to installing since moving onto Win 7; just not had the time to set everything up like i had on Vista.

note necessary if you have the full program but it's good that there's a free archive viewer available for their .aja backup files:

Living Room / Re: could two numeric keypads work at the same time
« Last post by nudone on July 01, 2010, 12:26 AM »
i'll just add that i did also buy a numeric keypad that i thought i might use on the right hand side.

the thing is, where do you put it when the idea is to make lots of room for mouse travel.

i thought maybe it could go a little further back so it would be accessible but out of the way. putting it anywhere other than the traditional place on the right just means it becomes another annoyance. it seems a little pathetic, i'm sure, but just having to reach for something to use for a few key presses is too much bother - so this numeric keypad doesn't get used at all.

it's all down to laziness really. i mean, how long would it take to learn to use they numeric keys with my left hand - i think just a few hours - maybe an hour?

i'll just have to make time for it and then i'll report back about it.

i'm going to wait for the reviews to appear around the net. if they are positive then i'll look into buying one - including trying to figure out how to pay them.

(but, let's face it, it could be a rubbish product. it looks borderline to me as to whether it's quality or total junk.)

i thought it odd. maybe they just aren't accepting Visa credit cards. all very odd though.

another descrepency was that the postage was going to be more than the amount stated elsewhere on the site.

i think i might just hold off for a bit until the get their act sorted out.

just tried to buy a warmouse. they aren't accepting payments from my region (UK). so that's the end of that for the moment.

i'll see what comes up on eBay if a few weeks/months. i can imagine a few people buying them and not liking them, so maybe there will be a bargain on ebay.

i've had a quick install and look around AJC Active Backup.

it looks less configurable than Filehamster, in that the settings appear to be global (i could be wrong). with FH you can set up different watches each with a different method of watching/deleting/etc.

i did notice that AJC will filter out files you specify, e.g. files with "~" in the title, like temp word docs. and filter by size. i can't remember if FH does this - i'm guessing it does but if not, then that's a nice feature to have.

FH gui is slow to respond (on my system) and it looks a bit "funky". i would prefer something more standard like AJC's appearance.

BUT...
AJC does not show specific file type icons - FH does. it's nice being able to identify files by icon type.

AND...
perhaps the deal breaker: AJC appears to use a database to store the versioned files in, whereas FH uses individual same file type version backups - so you can access each version with your default programs. you'll need AJC to access your versions in it's database.

FH will also store the backup/archive within the originals folder - if you like. this can be handy when moving files and their backups to elsewhere on your drives.

AJC has a nice context menu to perform actions on watched files. FH doesn't (i think).

i'm a bit unsure about it too. but i've always said to myself that i'd buy the first mouse i saw that had lots of buttons on it. this appears to be it.

i'm using 13 buttons on the MX Revolution mouse. that still isn't quite enough so i've tried to double them up by using button combinations (with autohotkey). this almost works. so, i'm hoping that 18 buttons will just be about right. the layout looks a bit awkward - i just hope it's something that is quickly absorbed.

« Last post by nudone on June 30, 2010, 04:26 AM »
i guess i lost my enthusiasm to do a full review of the ms sidewinder x6 after i found it to be less than perfect.

Positive points:
  • good key illumination across the board. key characters/text and key edges are illuminated. a dial allows brightness to be adjusted - or turned off.
  • numeric keypad section can be, quickly, switched between left or right side placement. (two keypads, one either side, will not work - both will be disabled).
  • numeric keypad on left side allows for more room for mouse travel (for right handed mousers). see negative comments below though...
  • lots of programmable keys - plus LEDs indicate which "bank" of keys is selected (3 banks available, plus 6 of the keys use a toggle button to double them up).
  • keyboard action feels quite "nice". i can't really offer more than that, it just seems better than my previous keyboard.
  • volume control dial.
  • 4 media keys, i.e. play/pause, back, forward, mute.
  • some kind of "game" specific keys; no idea what they do.
  • several keys have bumps on them. i haven't needed them but i can imagine it being useful if i made the effort to remember them.

okay, so nothing that unusual there.

Negative points:
  • programmable key software manager is pretty terrible. it's a click, click, click, click kind of method to set anything up (well, lots more clicks). very annoying. i've decided to ignore it for most things and just use autohotkey instead.
  • no back risers. keyboard lies completely flat unless you put something under the top edge (a bit of wood in my case).
  • numeric keypad on left side still doesn't seem to make a great deal of right hand mouse room. i'm still hitting the keyboard's right edge with my mouse. i've thought about getting a keyboard that has more of a laptop keyboard size and layout. i haven't bought one because i think it's still handy to have the home and cursor keys on the right - where i expect them to be through habit. (i could also blame my MX Revolution mouse for being too wide.)
  • escape key is further to the left than "normal". annoying as i touch type.
  • F, function keys, are a non "standard" size. so they are wider and closer together. annoying as i touch type.
  • macro buttons are close to main keys - easy to hit the wrong key when going for Ctrl key.
  • key remapping not very clever using the software manager. autohotkey has to be used instead. e.g. can't make key s6 map to Ctrl key (to avoid problem mentioned above).
  • back light is red. that's it. it would have been nice to have a choice of blue and green too. the red does look quite nice though.
  • volume dial is slow to respond.
  • they keys ¦ and | are the wrong way around.
  • the macro keys can be slow to respond. i set some up for cut/copy/paste. a quick hit of those keys might only perform a single key hit, so the output is like this instead: x/c/p instead of ctrl+x, ctrl+c, ctrl+v
  • no obvious place where the keyboard manager saves the configuration files.

Conclusion
they keyboard is okay. i can live with the faults, just a matter of getting used to things or working around them (with autohotkey). i've been a bit too busy to set it all up how i like - after that i'll, probably, realise how much better this keyboard is than my last one.

it isn't the ultimate keyboard i was hoping it to be. a better key manager program would make a big difference. i'm not sure what i really feel about the home and cursor key placement. i do like a bit of tradition but removing them would give more mouse room - maybe this mouse room issue is nothing really.

will i buy another keyboard?

maybe. if so, then it will be something completely different - one more like the laptop size i mentioned. i've just not seen any good ones with good key illumination. you may say why do i need lights when i touch type, i obviously don't need to look at the keys. well, i don't know all the keys - so i do have to look sometimes - and it's quite dark in here in the evenings.

edit:
forgot to mention a very obvious negative point:

- numeric keypad on left means you have to relearn the key layout with your left hand. i seem to have resorted to using the top row number keys instead. not really sure if i'll ever force myself to learn how to dial all the numbers with my left hand on the pad.

it doesn't look very sexy - but the thought of what it can do means it's going on my shopping list. i might wait to see if there are any negative reviews before buying one.
