N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Teaser: JustRecently
« Last post by techidave on December 02, 2008, 04:54 AM »
I find the "my recent documents" on the start menu of XP very frustrating to use sometimes.  I have some files I regulary use but they get overwritten when I am opening lots of pdf's or word docs off the web.  So this type of app may be useful to me.

Nice find CleverCat!  I have just d/l it and looks very promising. If SoftCat will allow the addition of a couple of fields like uninstall date; reason for uninstall or something like that, then it is very promising.

I do like the auto catalog feature as well. It found 115 programs but with the evaluation part only allows 15 to be cataloged.

cmpm, as near as I can tell the file will only give you a list of applications ionstalled and those that havce an uninstaller.   explaination Not quite what I was looking for but at least some one wrote a batch file to read that registry key.

I have tried a paper log in the past, it gets misplaced or lost and then I don't have it anymore.  I have tried a word document and then I cannot find it in my unorganized directory structure.

Since windows usually keeps track of almost everything, I thought surely it has something like "uninstalled applications" buried somewhere.  I just didn't know where to look for it or how to read it if it does exist.

I did look at the Revo uninstaller and noticed it can do alot but not what I want.  I didn't think about contacting the developer.

I will investigate Advanced Diary and Total Uninstall later on.

General Software Discussion / IDEA: programs that I have uninstalled
« Last post by techidave on November 28, 2008, 07:54 AM »
After reading today the thread about UltraExplorer, I wondered if I had ever tried it before in the past, but then uninstalled it.  So I was wondering if there was a way to tell if I had installed a program and then after a trial period, uninstalled it.  Would almost be nice to have comments on an uninstaller so you would know why you didn't like it.

maybe something already exists but haven't found anything yet.

Thanks!

whoops.  I just realized I posted it in the wrong place.  sorry about that.

General Software Discussion / Re: making a recovery partition
« Last post by techidave on November 24, 2008, 05:54 AM »
I have thought about SteadyState but if I lock it down too much... then that is not good.  The computer will not be on our school network and could be quite a ways off.  Which is why I was considering a recovery method.  That looked to be the best option to me.

But I am open to other ideas.  I surely am not the only person wanting/trying to do this type of thing? :-\

Mouse, that would be a great idea except... I don't have dvd drives in these computers.  It would need to be as simple and fool proof as possible so that anyone could do it.  Not to mention, it should be simple for me to setup.

Actually I was referring to the recovery menu that was being used off of this site here

they had some kind of dos menu that gave different options.  I will just have to go back and look at those links 4wd posted to see if I can find them.

General Software Discussion / making a recovery partition
« Last post by techidave on November 22, 2008, 04:57 PM »
is there an easy way to create a recovery partition on a desktop like Dell or HP?  I am needing to setup some computers that will be used offsite by some of our students and need an easy to do an offsite restore by a non techie person.

I will install XP Pro SP3, open office and a few other applications and all of these would need to be recovered.

preferrably it should be made up of free or open source software as I don't have any budget to spend on this project.

I have looked at some of the other threads on DC and also googled but didn't find any real clear solutions.  I know my friends at DC will come through!  :P

thanks in advanced,
Dave

Thanks Justice, that was it!  i found it was blocking the css because of an "unknown url".  I wasn't sure exactly what was being blocked until you said style sheets.

« Last post by techidave on November 20, 2008, 09:43 AM »
Having some problems with msn.com not displaying the whole page correctly.  see attached screenshot.

it tells me javascript needs to be enabled but it already is.  I have deleted cookies and temp files, stilil nothing.  I have also told it to check for updates on every page as well as accept cookies, etc.

I am not finding anything on google either.  I have checked my network polices and even reinstalled Windows but still have the same problem.

any ideas?

So far Churchtrac seems to be the best in my opinion but have only glanced at the websites mentioned.  It looks like it will be a bit before I can look at them in depth.

thanks to all who posted!

Thanks Edvard, I have been looking at your checking out those sites.  Web based is out for us as we have no internet at the church currently.  We only have 50 or so active members so spending lots of money (like $500) is out for us.

I will continue to look at if you find other stuff, please post back.

Living Room / church managment software
« Last post by techidave on November 13, 2008, 09:26 AM »
Our church is looking to purchase some management software to track attendance, offerings, etc.  we are small so there is not a lot of funds available to use.

Does anyone here have any experience using one like Church Windows here

Or even a template for a spreadsheet that would track contributions made and give you yearly totals and a nice report.

« Last post by techidave on November 11, 2008, 01:44 PM »
thanks for the quick reply, Darwin.  I did d/l and try it and seems to work reasonably well (after only a couple of minutes).  I do wish it showed the start button on both taskbars.  Not sure why, but I guess I think it should be there.  I can use winkey for that though.

maybe there is one that will do both??  Preferably free.

I don't think this is a new request but have been searching DC looking for the thread without much luck.  I have multiple monitors and would like the taskbar to showing what is open on their respective monitors.

I thought Skrommel had written something but haven't been able to find that as well.

<sigh>

I remember doing that!  Why, I have no idea.  We just did it.

I had a friend in grade school who would eat the paste, but as I recall it had a faint peppermint smell to it, so it didn't surprise me.
That smell takes me back every time...

I have been searching the DC site and also google to find any software that would convert MS Powerpoint 2003 or 2007 presentation to a dvd so it could be viewed in a dvd player.

i am having problems finding free software to do this.  is there anything out that can do this for free or very low cost?

thanks,
