DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Streambox VCR
« Last post by wraith808 on January 15, 2011, 03:25 PM »
Distributing of Streambox VCR is illegal in the US.  See what the EFF says about it here.

I'm sure with a little more googling you can find it, but whether I agree with the law or not, I don't want to get the people here at DoCo in trouble for pointing people to that.

Feels like I missed quite a few fiery threads here on DC in the past, but just recently there have been one or two instances that seem to me to contravene the spirit of the site.

I think you handled the one situation that I saw a lot better than I would have.  There are some who are just abrasive, some intentionally, and some not.  I haven't always handled it in the best manner, especially when someone is trying to show that they are smarter than you at your expense.  Or some that obviously post under sock puppets.  But in the end, DC is a very good environment, and the ability to be a douche if you take advantage of the environment is one of the reasons- only extreme situations are really policed.

General Software Discussion / Re: Skwire's DC member site marked as suspicious

Sounds like they might be after breaches in company policy rather than malware.

They don't really care, truthfully, other than a) policy on inappropriate sites (there was a big stink over pr0n sites a while back, from what I hear), and b) viruses (some virus brought the company to its knees a while back).  As I said, I'm pretty friendly with the admins, and they're more overworked by having a global company supporting a product with real-time 24/7 almost 365 day updates than actual internet usage.  The pay is performance based, so your performance comes out in your pay, rather than someone keeping track of your internet usage.

Should be fixed now.

I'll wait 'til I get back after the holiday to check, though I did receive a similar e-mail.

Thanks for the link!  As my IS department sort of looks the other way in regards to my highly customized desktop (note - make friends with the IS people first at any new job!), I wasn't going to e-mail them about the link, but wanted to do something... this helps loads!

General Software Discussion / Skwire's DC member site marked as suspicious

I'm not sure what filtering software we use at work, but it's been here for a while, and I just saw something that I hadn't seen before:

THIS SITE HAS BEEN BARRED UNDER COMPANY POLICY ON USAGE OF THE INTERNET, OR TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE DEMAND CONFLICTING WITH CORE BUSINESS ACTIVITIES.

Internet Usage is Monitored.
Your IP address: <Redacted>
The URL is: skwire.dcmembers.com
The category of this URL is: Suspicious
If you feel the site is being inappropriately blocked, please submit helpdesk ticket by clicking on email link below.

I'm sure its because of false positives... just wanted to let you know.  Even though false positives are reported to the virus agencies, and you can ignore them, there are other ramifications that haven't been considered (at least by me).

^ It's not that big of a fee to start developing for the platform.  $100 I believe?  Both apps are $4.99 each.  The math doesn't support that argument.
8736
iCrap app(s) cost money.

To be fair, that's a function of the developer of the app.  Developing a paid app for a free service has always seemed sort of questionable to me, especially if you don't have a free (if less featured) version to give back to the community...

I learned my lesson from 2 girls 1 cup- it can't be worse than that.  (There are some things you can't unsee... so don't, unless you're more than a bit masochistic).

park cursor aside
@wraith808, PCA moves the mouse cursor only and does not effect focus. Set "Slide mouse.." to 0 (zero) if it is higher, for quicker parking. Also you may try "Park at..screen edge' different values for different screen position and check. The "Park pixel..inward..", I made to not activate some toolbox which are normally at the screen edge, which get activated if mouse cursor comes near it. Let me know if it helped.

Ah, I see... using that setting helped immensely!  Thanks!

Unfinished Requests / Re: One word, three dictionaries
« Last post by wraith808 on January 08, 2011, 12:27 PM »
If you wanted to search specific dictionaries then you may be able to cobble something together with a macro to open new tab, then use site:merriam-webster.com word or site:thefreedictionary.com sesquipedalian

The dictionaries I am talking about are software ones, not on-line.

Oh... I misunderstood too.  I was allowing to use the websites; I didn't realize they were software based.

Did someone do a NANY based on this idea? (using websites - I've lost track of the NANY entries...)

I did... the regex's used to get the definitions aren't as good as they should be right now, and I have a couple of features to add, but it's functional.

If you could make it an apple peeking out of a closet that would be hilarious...

I'd like to see a new badger each year, so we can collect them like the mugs (bears/thongs)

That would be cool... perhaps even if the badge was changed somewhat... if the 01 did increase with year.  A bit late for that, I suppose :)

VB.NET is trivial to learn. I think it's great to start with.
Why start with a lobotomy and then later on try to reverse it's effects? :)

VB.NET I've found is as different from classic VB as night is to day.  Ok, maybe an exaggeration, but it's not the same animal.  I find that it doesn't irritate my OOP sensitivities as much as classic VB does, though.

Anand, I was using Park Cursor Aside while recording the screencast, and I noticed that when the cursor is parked, input focus is taken from whatever you're typing in.  Is this something that's happening on my installation, or is it a known thing?  And is it possible to put the focus back to whatever you're working on?  It's a pretty slick idea and implementation, but that bit with grabbing focus makes it not as useful as it could be.

Thoughts?

Hi limelect,

I tried your program, and I think I understand that it is supposed to be a password manager.  However, when I got an entry into the db and attempted to try it out, it gave me an error that the field 'Disable' was not found.

Thoughts?
