RPN == Reverse Polish Notation, stack based way of inputting stuff. Pretty funky if you're used to the "normal" (algebraic?) way of doing it. Queer languages like LISP use RPN as well.

No, I guess I'm not sure.

I do remember before XP came out (maybe even ME too), people were saying that windows would be able to go through your music collection and delete stuff you didn't legitimately own. It of course that never happened.
I think it'll be the same with WinV, a lot of hysteria that will fizzle after a month of it being released.

Considering that the hardware-assisted Palladium exists, I'm afraid it could be reality this time. "It's just for Corporate PCs where we need the security" - yeah, right.

That's just the C:\Wprg files - with a date tagged on (I *could* use file datestamp for this, but prefer it in the filename - easier to quickly remember when I last made a backup of those file).

As for registry... I don't currently back this up. I have .reg files for those few apps that need it, and various system tweaks are done at OS install time (again, <3 unattended setup :)).

Well, I have two "program files" folders. One is "C:\Programs" (I hate "program files" so I rename it to "Programs" with my unattended setup) which is "complex" applications that need a reinstall, and then a "C:\Wprg" with small apps that either work without install, or are simple enough that I can just export a couple .reg files for them. When I reinstall or recover from image, I unpack my wprg-YYYYMMDD.rar file after recovery.

I've got install CDs/DVDs/files for all my apps, so I don't lose anything :)

Hehe, does sound a bit overkill to me. for my mirrored 160gb, I have windows+apps on C, source+docs+data on D, downloads+games on E, and other stuff on F... I'm probably going to merge E and F since that split doesn't make sense. Got a separate 80gig Q partition, which I use as a "scratchpad" - it's nice having a separate *drive* when you do disk-intensive stuff, even if you main drive(s) supports NCQ. And I do a lot of messing around with creating unattended windows setups with nLite, which involves a *lot* of shuffling around.

I've played a bit with http://www.codeproje.../tools/ToDoList2.asp , which seems pretty decent for single-user projects. I haven't committed myself to any tool yet, although I know I should :)

(that's the AbstractSpoon thing, by the way, I just happened to learn about it on CodeProject so that's the link I'm putting)

A thing to remember: keep OS + programs on one partition, and ALL data files (source code, "My Documents", etc. yadda yadda) on another. That way you'll "only" lose program settings when you revert to a drive image.

It'll never happen. Well, not in the next 10 years at least.

Case and point:
The largest part of all software that's used on this planet would not be usable.

Does anyone remember the "competing" digital video format when DVDs just hit the market? I may be mistaken, but I think it was called Divx (as odd as that is). The way it would have worked is you would buy a Divx player that would have a modem built in. If you wanted to buy a movie they would only cost about $5, initially at least. You would get about 3 plays for free, but every viewing after that would cost a couple dollars. The technology didn't lack in "backers" either, I don't remember many of them, but Disney was on the list. Well, long story short, it flopped. So much so, that most people probably don't even know it existed.

People are stupid, but they weren't stupid enough to buy in to paying Disney $2 every time their 6 year old watches <insert Disney title>! And we're certainly not stupid enough to buy in to this.

Are you sure?

Everybody Loves Vista (TM) because of yet another layer of lame fisher-price graphics. Most people don't know about the DRM it will contain, and will willingly install Vista just because it looks pretty. Not stupid enough?  :-\

BC has also been on discount here a couple of times, as well as been offered as a prize. And yeah, after reading your post more thoroughly it seems those are a bit overkill :)

Perhaps give http://www.diginaut.com/shareware/fw/ a try - I think that's what one of the admins from another Danish museum uses.

EDIT: sorry, no, he uses http://peccatte.kare...Idem/idemhelpeng.htm

There's WinMerge and Beyond Compare

Getting tortoise to ignore binaries isn't too bad, there's global ignore-filters :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Microsoft Office Alternative
« Last post by f0dder on April 13, 2006, 05:22 AM »
I currently use OpenOffice myself, but I'm tiiiiired of it's extremely long startup time and bloat. Java, bleh. Once it's started, it's sorta okay though - but of course I do have a AMD64x2 4400+ w/2gig of ram.

At work we're forced to use MS Office, the alternatives just don't handle the Office file formats well enough... and, well, Office is pretty darn fast compared to OpenOffice, and that's *without* those silly boot-time preloaders.

http://f0dder.reteam.org :)

The DOS versions of the UFO/XCOM games don't run well/at all under NT, and the windows versions were programmed by DirextX newbies and end up with garbled graphics on most modern machines. I bugfixed this without having the source available.

That's just a *small* example of what can be done, if you've got the time and dedication the sky's the limit. I know of a guy that re-implemented the entire HASP (iirc) dongle driver... but that wasn't necessarily for "decent" purposes.

It's a very interesting concept, but I tend to do test software installations in vmware, which has it's own rollback stuff... I've been hesitating to try out SVS because I'm afraid it might affect performance - I already think NOD32 auto scanning is bad enough :)
