Developer's Corner / Re: Frustration with User Feedback
« Last post by tomos on March 19, 2009, 09:39 AM »
The idea of offering a good alerting service so that people can find what, potentially, genuinely interests them, is a good one, though.  Perhaps a separate "new software releases/updates" blog with terse descriptions?

what we need here is a database there's so many small apps all over the place here
showing them by what's new isnt a great way for finding apps if looking for something in partcular - of course forum search can be used then I guess ..

General Software Discussion / Re: wanted: alternative to FastStone Image Viewer
« Last post by tomos on March 19, 2009, 08:04 AM »
ArtSee is very nice - loads big images much quicker than Faststone
unfortunately there doesnt seem to be a selective way of zooming (in Faststone theres Crtl+Mouse-Drag to zoom in on selected area and left-click to zoom in a set amount.)

I've also been unhappy with some faststone bugs for a long time now so still looking ...

Also I have yet to find an external viewer that follows the sort order in the file manager from which it's been opened - maybe that's not possible unless using default viewer.
That and a selective zoom and I swear I'd be happy :p

thanks for the info gpetrant :)

sounds like the indexing is a very important aspect ... makes it v.expensive, as you say: without that 70% off!
So when you import something - does that create a link to the original, and, (pro version) index the contents
or does it actually make a copy of imported file in the database?
Must make for a very big database either way though - do you bother with incremental backups or does the programme itself have any sort of backup system?
I've been using dropbox for backing up my IQ (SQLNotes) database (it saves revisions but only saves the difference to the file) - it's under 30mb but before dropbox I was making a few backups per day and managed to have a lot of gigabytes of backup before I noticed. Havent had to restore the dropbox revisions so not sure how dependable it is for this ..

I've found that "Index Your Files" has all the features I want without unnecessary bells and whistles. But of course that's just one of the many programs listed in the above link. I may try a few more to see if there's something even better...

do you think would that be suitable for keeping a record of backups on DVD as well?

I dont know much about it (I should :-[)
but AFAIK if you're preparing stuff for publication/printing I believe the mac fonts are much more suitable and/or successful

What attracted me was its open format.

any chance you could tell us a bit more there :)
Is it a chuck everything in there and search programme  :D
It's hard to get a decent idea of it from it's home page and I hate having to look at videos (will do at some stage if there's no other choice but now not a great time)
ah they do have a list of features page (hidden in a drop-down list :-\) but that's not very helpful either.
https://www.asksam.c...;b=askSam%20Features...

It would be great if you could give us even a vague idea of how it can be used

Can PageFour be used portably?

I dont know
There's no mention of the possibility on install or in the help file - there's no search on the website so I guess that leaves contacting the author unless someone else here knows

is everyone a member of facebook :tellme:

it bugs me when I get mails from facebook telling me my friend John or Jimmy would like me to look at his facebook profile - when I follow the link I'm told I have to join up to see it -

I find it pretty offensive (of facebook) and a bit ironic if the people dont seem to be able to manage to even send me an email themselves (mind maybe they dont even know facebook is sending these mails :-\)

It turns out the real reason was that she had been staying with a family with three children all of whom had been extolling the huge advantages of their very pretty MacBooks.

You could have a look at the List of Disc Catalogers thread - but that has a list of about 200 programmes that can do what you ask LOL

But I'm sure someone will recommend one for you!

jeez,
the related article is one wierd article - they're trying to be funny and report seriously at the same time: BIG FAIL

I enjoyed their "Article of the Now — Ireland" celebrating Paddy's day on the home page
http://encyclopediad...matica.com/Main_Page
from the page about Ireland. Very offensive stuff but as an Irish person I guess I'm allowed post it (or am I ?)
Ireland is the Short Bus of Europe, a mildewy, cloud-shrouded island inhabited by an ungovernable race of fuck-crazed, monkeyfaced mackerel-snappers, whose legendary capacity for alcohol and maniacal obsession with death and misery, is offset only by their incomprehensible (and likely completely fake) language [it's just so extreme but actually large amounts of truth there - except the bit about the language - but it made me laugh]

Would you care to do a review about PageFour for us? :-*

I'm always looking for new writing/idea tools. (It's a hobby of mine.) ;D
40hz
you can download a time-UN-limited trial (there's a limitation on the number of "Notebooks" (three I think) and pages in each (30))
That's enough though to give you a good sense of the programme I reckon. There's a quite positive review of it by Tom Colvin here (and he's a real writer, not like us :P)

The tabs are nice to have, there's lots of keyboard shortcuts (unfortunately not customisable - Ctrl+Z on a german keyboard is not easy :(). There some nice options for spelling/correction.

I already have a list of requests/suggestions to the developers, most interface related - I'll wait till I've used it a bit (more) before sending on.

There's the equivalent of an outline on the left - well, it works like a folder tree with "pages" instead of files. You have to double click a page to display it (ouch), although I guess it's mimicking explorer there which is logical e.g. if you want to move a page to a different location you dont want it to open on first click: but, a bit of a pain as Curt says.

Importing:
to import word document you need Word 2000 or newer (ouch agin). I use Softmaker Office 2008 ...
You can import individual files or you can select a folder and filetype (doc if you have word, rtf and txt) and it will import all files of selected types.

Exporting:
only in "Notebook" format (havent looked at that yet). For something that's aiming at writers, I really dont understand this - surely they will want to pass on their work (+ formatting even) to someone else? Review linked above says:
PageFour maintains its files in Rich Text Format, or RTF, the format which I think should be preferred by writers - so maybe there is some way to export or convert but it's not explained in the help file ...Hah, they are RTF files - now why didnt they say that in the first place  ;)

Personally, what I'm looking for is somewhere that I can organise my growing collection of notes/ideas about various topics (which often overlap) and where I can then actually produce something from them - I'm still not sure what exactly and maybe that's part of my problem - I'm not sure if PageFour is the programme for this but I'm gonna try it.

For info about PageFour and some other writer's software see the SOFTWARE page on Tom Colvin's blog (Becoming A Writer Seriously)

Who made the drawings for the banner?

Nick Pearson (Nudone) is the brilliant artist who created Cody our mascot, and made so many amazing illustrations of him.  Nick also runs several other beautiful sites, most notably www.CodexTransportica.com.

also very notably Head in the Clouds Comic Strip although, cause he's somewhere else [see above] he hasnt been drawing the most recent strips

I have WinCatalog 2008 from a previous bits offer (which I've never installed :-[)
they dont have any upgrade info at their site  so I mailed them

I got a very prompt, polite, and helpful mail from them telling me that there's no upgrade price

As in, the upgrade from 2008 to 2009 is free OR you have to pay full price? I'm guessing the former, but thought I'd ask to be sure  :)

oups  :tellme:  FREE  :D

IDEA for new playback setting

Shuffle (or Random) with manual override :-)
it would work as shuffle except when I select a different file - then it would play that selected file next. Then it would continue in Shuffle or whatever mode.

I find I'm listening in Random mode and, on hearing a particular song, I think - oh, I'd like to hear XYZ by the person or whatever. I'd select that one, go back to whatever I'm doing and my selection would play next...

Never seen it anywhere else (but only familiar with two players :p) so just throwing it out there ... or here :)

are you familiar with any other catalogers that you could compare it with ?
Will be soon (March 16th) on BdJ http://www.bitsdujou...are/wincatalog-2008/ with 50% discount.  Seems a rather nice tool to me, I personnaly rely on the free lite version - for the moment.

I also have one that's command line oriented.  Not very imaginatively named
Run And Place utilities. It's available for download from this page:

http://www.favessoft.com/downloads.html

Avira AntiVir (Premium) tags this as some AutoIT trojan (and doesnt let you copy the name, how silly)
I guess it's the same problem as with AHK programmes - just thought I'd let you know
