I regularly went on at length on the topic at JoS back when it was a popular forum for developers.

I don't take as critical a stance as many here towards download sites. They serve me well, so I have no problems with them. I make more money because of them. Not complaining. PAD -- love it. Great stuff. But, I know what they are and what their purpose is. I've no illusions about what they are or do.

I am sure the applications you have PAD files for that are making you money as the result of being made available through the download sites is shareware and not freeware.

My software site is such low traffic, I can't even give away advertising slots for free, yet the download sites are getting a lot more traffic for my software than I do, when you count the total number of downloads they are getting from hotlinking my files. I am sure their ad slots don't have a "advertise here for $0" like mine do.

I've been meaning/threatening to write a book on this for a LLLLOOOOOONNNNNGGGG time now... But never finished it. Started... But that's all.

A LOT of software authors are pessimistic about PAD and download sites, but I really believe that's simply because they don't know how to use PAD and the download sites effectively.

Here's an example... A few years ago I did 1 (one) round of my cocaine-methamphetamine-speedy-hyper-ultra PAD promotion for ALShow (now ALPlayer). Within a month or so I had it in the top 10 Google results for some of the most competitive search terms out there. I forget exactly what they were, but something like "free video player" or "free movie player" or something like that.

Competition for the terms in the top 10 included Microsoft (Windows Media Player), Apple (Quicktime or iTunes), RealPlayer, VLC and a few others.

That was 1 round.

However, I put more effort in than the tiny amount most software authors do.

Most SEO "gurus" will blather on about how what I do doesn't work. They'll go on about this technique and that technique are all BS and will even harm you. I have zero respect for them.

My suspicion is that they know damn well that what I do works, and that it's almost a silver bullet when it comes to SEO, and they just don't want other people to know and they don't want anyone else doing it because it *IS* so effective.

I know at least 1 person who is at the top of the game and does things very similar to me. She won't admit anything to anyone about what she does though. She keeps it all very secret, as in total silence. If you want it, you've got to pay for it, and she's not cheap. She's one of those people that keeps a small number of clients and fires them when she feels like. (We've been friends for a few years.)

I know another fellow in the game, and I've got a feeling that he knows a lot more than what he says publicly. I've heard him publicly say that the stuff I do is total garbage and a total waste of time. (I've known him for a few years and I don't like him at all.)

I screamed at the top of my lungs for years about how to do it in some forums and news groups, and I suppose I just gave up.

I've done almost no SEO work at all at http://renegademinds.com/ because that's what I used to do all the time, and Renegade Minds was more for me to do other things, like programming, and not SEO. Really - like almost zero. I've not done anything at all in probably 2 or 3 years.

However, I still rank very well for a lot of things there, including keywords that are important to me. I mean as compared to some that aren't important to me:

http://www.google.co...p;q=realvnc+tutorial

I rank #2 there, and really couldn't care less.

Similarly:

http://www.google.co...mp;q=http_user_agent

I rank #2 there. There are a lot more.

The key is to use the download sites more than they use you.

Some important ones for me are like:

http://www.google.co...p;q=pitch+shift+song

Where I rank #1.

And I've used the download sites to help me get there.

I'm going to scream this once more... Just once...

ROBOSOFT!

Why Apple removed VLC from the App Store?

On January 7th, I was told by an Apple attorney that VLC media player had been removed from the App Store. That is how I was able to break the news first. However as can be expected from an attoryney, there was not really any explanation. A number of people and -unfortunately- popular bloggers have jumped to the obvious conclusion: the VideoLAN project, and I in particular would be idealist morons who care more about technical license details than users, and we would have constrained Apple. This is not quite true.

First, even I do not know for certain why Apple removed VLC, and Apple will probably never state the truth.

Second, Apple has already removed VLC from the "old" Mac Store for computers... already about 4 years ago, at a time when VLC was one of the most popular applications, and I am yet to learn the reasons why.

Third, Apple received my copyright notification more than 2 months before they pulled the application. This was not expedited, as the US copyright law would require. As such, it seems dubious that my well-publicized notification from last october is the root cause of the removal. It is nevertheless the reason why I was learnt directly from Apple that VLC was removed.

Last, Apple had the power and plenty of time (2 months) to adjust and clarifiy the terms of the App Store. Indeed, said terms were modified several times since then. Alternatively, Apple could even have continued to carry VLC implicitly distributed under the GPL by Applidium. This is effectively what I believe the situation was before the removal.

All in all, we will probably never know the truth. But I am inclined to believe what Eben Mogel, from the Software Freedom Law Center, foretold me 2 months ago: Apple would remove VLC simply because it cannot stand software distributed under the GPL on its stores. But, it is Apple's choice and business decision, therefore Apple would have no reasons to expedite the process. It could also be that they do specifically not fancy VLC on their platforms. That would account for the removal from the Mac Store a long time ago.

I know this would be disappointing to the many Apple fanboys who have insulted or slandered me on the web or over email in the last few days. But I might not be the (anti-)hero people made me.

There is another post there that you might want to read as well.

http://arstechnica.c...at-odds-with-gpl.ars

http://www.fsf.org/n...app-store-compliance

An iPhone port of GNU Go is currently being distributed through Apple's App Store. However, this distribution is not in compliance with the GNU GPL. The primary problem is that Apple imposes numerous legal restrictions on use and distribution of GNU Go through the iTunes Store Terms of Service, which is forbidden by section 6 of GPLv2. So today we have written to Apple and asked them to come into compliance. We would be happy to see Apple distribute these programs under the GPL's terms, but unfortunately, it seems much more likely that they'll simply make the problem go away by removing GNU Go from the App Store.

Apple needs to understand that it is not the only company on the planet that can own copyright in a work and that it is not the only company that can license software. It is this fundamental in ability of Apple to allow others any sort of freedom on its platform that is the core problem. They are control freaks.

There is some incorrect reporting on this from a few different sources.

Check the Videolan blog for what's really going on.

The problem is that Apple's psychotically restrictive EULA for their app store puts too many restrictions on software downloaded there. It's not GPL compatible, and Apple is not willing to make it compatible for different licensing models. (Go figure.)

It would be simple for Apple to allow GPL software without compromising anything of their own. They simple have not done so, which, to me, indicates that they simply do not care about their users or developers in the least.

VLC is the first fallout.

Java is different as Oracle owns the copyright and can do anything they want, GPL or no GPL.

A lot of this sounds to me like people getting all upset about heroin addicts and attributing all the problems to them, but ignoring the heroin dealers and kingpins.

This is the kinds of stuff that I mean:

Screenshot - 2011-01-18 , 11_42_07 PM.png

CNET and SourceForge are just as guilty.

There is an ad that's been apparently pulled, but it was ONLY a big download graphic exactly like a download button with NOTHING else. It was green -- maybe some people saw it. It was blatantly trying to mislead people. It had NO other purpose.

There is a massive lack of integrity/honesty on the Internet. It's pervasive, and overwhelming. And much of the problem I would directly attribute to advertising in one way or another. It is advertising that enables splogs and crap. Advertising motivates content theft and the like. Arbitrage happens ALL the time, and Google is complicit in it, e.g. Ebay, Amazon, etc. I've never liked ads on my own sites, though I do advertise.

I don't take as critical a stance as many here towards download sites. They serve me well, so I have no problems with them. I make more money because of them. Not complaining. PAD -- love it. Great stuff. But, I know what they are and what their purpose is. I've no illusions about what they are or do.

I would never get another Dell laptop. I would go for something else like a Toshiba.

My Dell Studio has a Sony optical drive, and it has never worked properly. And I've had it replaced 2x. Beyond useless.

The ATI video has never worked right -- BSOD error with another monitor plugged in on Win x64.

Other than those 2, it's been fine. But those are 2 pretty big problems. Oh, and the caps lock light doesn't work...

I'm not the only one to have issues with Dell. Both Dell and HP rate very low on the consumer side. You can find reviews on the topic.

You know, when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation we have to focus on security first, and then people’s right to know. Because it’s so important that everyone in our borders is safe, and so we can’t let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case.

As usual the VBA help file is, well, less than helpful.  The info may be there, but I clearly don't know the right questions to ask.

I really don't understand why MS doesn't get .NET into MS Office already. You can use it in SQL Server, so why not Office? VBA is, well, painful in comparison.

So, just to be clear, the *program* works fine if you have a constant `false` controlling the `if` - the problem is that the debugger is unable to deal correctly with variables scoped to the `else` clause.  Is that a fair summary?

Yes.

"if (false)" results in locally scoped variables declared in else clauses not being available to the debugger, but still functioning properly in the software.

Here's something you can copy & paste in VS to have a quick look:
Code: C# [Select]
  1. string test1a = "Hello";
  2. int test2a = 4;
  3. string test1c;
  4. int test2c;
  5. if (false)
  6. {
  7. }
  8. else
  9. {
  10.     string test1b = test1a + " world!"; // can't see 1b
  11.     int test2b = test2a * test2a; // can't see 2b
  12.     test1c = test1b; // can see 1c, not 1b
  13.     test2c = test2b; // can see 2c, not 2b
  14.     Console.WriteLine("Break here :" + test1b + test2b.ToString()); // this works as expected, but can't see during debugging
  15. }

Your example there doesn't use any local variables declared in the else clause. While it "works", you can't debug it properly as the values aren't available.
Yeah, that's what this whole thread is about, right? :)

I thought your "In short, in C++ or C# (and possibly all other .NET languages or in VS 2010 or something like that), you CANNOT use" mean that the compiler forbids it, like Java forbids unreachable code (C# just warns about it).

Oh - no. I didn't mean that. I just meant "CANNOT" in the sense of futility and keeping your sanity. :)

For the C++ version, I don't even get a warning until I crank up the warning level to /W4... and the warning I get is "test.cpp(5) : warning C4127: conditional expression is constant", not unreachable code :)

Btw, C# allows you to use #if/#else/#endif pragmas (iirc it was included in C# 2), might want to use that instead?

Your example there doesn't use any local variables declared in the else clause. While it "works", you can't debug it properly as the values aren't available.

The problem is that variables declared inside else clauses (where the first if conditional is literally "false" as opposed to evaluating to false) are not available during debugging. "The name 'blah' does not exist in the current context."

what was the condition in the if statement?
false? :)

Quite correct, and indeed, it is THE crucial point.

I didn't want to assume... :P  He could have just been doing pseudo code like the rest of the code :)

Quite correct, and indeed, it's is THE crucial point.

"comparisonIndex" is an Int32 counter that I initialize outside the conditional to -1. It is only ever incremented, so the following will only ever evaluate to false:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. if (comparisonIndex < -111)

Stuff works then.

In short, in C++ or C# (and possibly all other .NET languages or in VS 2010 or something like that), you CANNOT use (literally, and not pseudo-coded-ly ;) ):

Code: C# [Select]
  1. if (false)

And then follow with an else clause.

Instead, use an expression that you KNOW will always evaluate to false.

Bizarre. Yes. Easy to get around once you know. Sure. Sane? Hell no~!

Has anyone heard of this kind of wonkiness before?

By some coincidence, I was just looking at a bug report for C++ that indicates the debugger has trouble 'finding' variables declared in an `else` clause (at least sometimes):

  - https://connect.micr...t-see-some-variables

I have no idea what extent the debugger for C# uses same or similar code to the debugger for C++, and even if I did I'm not sure how this factoid would help you.  But I posted it anyway, just because it seems similar.

Thanks for that. It seems that it is the exact same issue. The workaround is to define the local variables outside of the conditional.

It's just that section of code. Other sections (that I checked) seem fine.

So, I tried this...

I had that code arranged like this:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. if (false)
  2. {
  3.   // old stuff
  4. }
  5. else
  6. {
  7.   // all the code was here... (new stuff I'm testing)
  8. }
  9.
  10. // I moved it all here...

WTF? It's normal again...

Has anyone heard of this kind of wonkiness before?
