Find And Run Robot / Re: control panel app searches
« Last post by mouser on November 15, 2013, 03:43 PM »
Hi Mark.

The FARR aliases for things like cpanel and mmc should let you filter/refine the results just by typing stuff after "cpanel" or "mmc"

Try that and let me know if it does what you want.
8602
That's odd - if you move the cursor inside it I would think you would be able to capture them.

One advanced thing you can try is the 4th option shown in the dialog after you use red box to capture an object/window, which is labeled "Capture Multiple Images, One for teach Child Control".

Use redbox to select the entire window and then choose that..

Either you will be wonderfully surprised that it captures every single control automatically, or you can let me know if it fails.

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to Capture Screenshot Capture Itself?

There is actually a menu item under the "Capture" menu to capture an image of Screenshot Captor window itself.
It's not in the tray menu, only the normal application window menu.

Living Room / Re: How long do hard drives actually live for?

most electronic failures occur very early or very late in life. Electronics hardly ever fail during their midlife.

yes but wouldn't that support the idea of preemtively decommissing a hard drive after 5 or 6 years, whether its displaying any signs of trouble or not?

needless to say, all of this talk about preemptive decomissioning is predicated on the idea that having a hard drive suddenly die on you is a very bad thing to have happen -- something which is true in most cases.

Let me summarize some conclusions from this and other threads:

  • The chance of a catastrophic hard drive failure in any given year is always non-trivial -- people who think there is a one-in-a-thousand chance of hard drive failure are fooling themselves.  Hard drives still fail pretty frequently.
  • Sometimes you get some warning -- which is why it's useful to have a SMART drive monitor tool, and to be aware of sounds, etc.  At the first sign of trouble, clone and replace the hard drive and put the old one on the shelf.
  • One key question that is a little closer to being answers is one I raised in my post "Should we preemptively retire old hard drives".  This latest article would seem to suggest that after a few years, the rate of failure seems to start increasing, and it really might be a good idea to preemptively replace drives that are 4-5 years old, rather than to assume that a long-lasting drive is something special that will run forever.
  • Because it seems clear that for almost all pc components, very high temperatures are bad, and because this is one area where we actually have a little control over -- it's the one area i have started paying more attention to in last years.  So I run tray-resident temperature monitoring software that shows temperatures of all hard drives as well as the cpu, and alerts when they get too high.
  • We do not have good data about whether some drives will just run forever.  And we have no good data about which brands and types live longer.

I must admit, it is VERY confusing that they are shown in a big box at the bottom.
I should fix that and put them in a format that one would expect.

Google is all about shoving it's stuff down our throats and doing whatever they have to do to lock everyone into their products.  They use sneakier tactics than others, but the intent seems clear -- buy and get your tentacles into enough stuff and slowly make it impossible to use the internet without being dependent on google technology.

NSWF (language):

Note:

I don't have particular complaints about any one specific google product or decision.  I just think when you put it all together what you see is a smarmy, greedy company whose goal is to get their grubby hands into everything and push out all competitors, and then worry about how to take advantage of us (or inundate us with advertisements) once we're locked in and the competition is killed.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record -- but it wouldn't be so upsetting if a company came in and said: "ok here is our service, and here is how we're going to pay for it"  but instead what we see, over and over again is a big company like google comes in, kills all the competition and establishes a monopoly by offering a free service with no advertisements.

Then after they capture the marketplace and spend a few years happily losing money and killing off the competitors who don't have as deep bank accounts, then they turn on the ads and start changing the terms of service, and using one service as a platform to push their other services.

And the worst thing about all this is that these companies make it virtually impossible for any small companies to compete with them -- it's a winner take all world and without the bankrole to bleed millions a year for a decade, you have no chance.

You'll find the option to center the window (or not) in the "Display Options" tab.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying -- are you saying that you think consumer drives might be expected to die faster than the backblaze drives, or?

Extremetech has an article today on an issue we've discussed before -- the longevity of hard drives.

This data covers only the first 4 years, but i have to admit it's a bit scary to me:

If you buy a hard drive today, there’s a 90% chance that it will survive for three years. If your drive makes it to the three-year point, you would be wise to back up your data, as there’s a 12% chance per year that your drive will die.

If you don't have a good backup plan in place, start one this week.  I recommend a combination of monthly full drive imaging combined with a constant online backup service for your documents and/or file mirroring.

Can you try something for me -- if you make a copy of the shortcut and replace the %windir% with the actual windows directory, does LBC copy the shortcut properties in that case?

SC doesnt have a plugin system -- it just launches executables.

Regarding wanting to stay resident, might I suggest a commandline option to launch the tool and stay resident, and a commandline option that says to not open a second instance but open the file in currently running instance?

I use such a procedure in some of my apps so that if a second instance is launched, it will just pass execution to the already running copy.  The benefit is that the caller doesn't have to do anything special.

So the tabs would be pretty close to the group list on the left -- I don't see any compelling benefit of tabs.

But the grid view does look like it could be a nice alternative way to view images..

Welcome, Subsim, and thank you for posting.

Could you tell us a little bit more about the idea of a "tabbed icon format" ?
