Well then, World Of Warcraft would be illegal in spain - it uses the bittorrent protocol for distributing updates :)

Hmm, interesting.

The screens look nifty - it's not too often you see hand-crafted pixel graphics in these days of 3D acceleration and geometric flash games.  :-*

I tend to use this one for tongue-in-cheek, although some might argue that it's rather sticking it's tongue... :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is so much software cracked?

Humm, since I'm a programmer, I'm against making software entirely free. Cheaper, sure, but free - no.

Why? I want to earn money by writing (quality) code, not by offering support. But of course, providing software of the typical GPL quality would mean earning a lot of money on support :P

'twas a good idea, though.

Perhaps somebody else wants to step up and do something cody-cool?

i wasn't really interested in the case modding, f0dder - i just meant have you done any more videos like that - ya know, quick and kinda fun to watch.
Aah, that's what you meant.

No, sorry - it's my friend that had borrowed a cam from the school he went to back then. While I guess you don't even need a video camera these days (a medium-end digital camera should be able to deliver same quality?), I don't have the creative powers to think up stuff anyway :)

that video is kinda cool, f0dder - any more?
Naw, stopped doing that kind of stuff when all the casemodding kiddies started insane projects funded out of their parent's wallets ;)

The SH33PB0X had a purpose, kinda. So did my "cardboard server" (which I didn't take any pics of).

While much of the casemodding is boring, ugly and silly (plexiglass windows and cathode ray tubes... *yawn*), there's some interesting stuff done. I still think a lot of it is silly, but for instance the "doom 3 cabinet" has taken some pretty mad skills to make.

My favourites are at http://mini-itx.com/, though. There's some cute stuff there, and a lot of it serves a purpose as well.

only places hooks on web browser, to detect downloads, i think, but i didn't allow them to be placed.
Yeah, it did that even before it turned shareware/adware/whatever, so the hooks shouldn't be a problem. And it does work fine without them, although you'll miss a few features (that I used so rarely, anyway, that I don't even know what they are :)).

A couple of friends and I built a custom casing quite some years ago, before all the rage of casemodding kiddos started. Back in ye olde days of 1999. The box has been disassembled and defunct for many years, but I still have the video we shot:

I can say that I've had a tough job of cleaning up the mess left behind by previous admins at the museum I sysadmin. One thing is using pirated stuff at home, but ffs - you don't install pirated software as an admin.

Why don't they use a compile farm with many of those dual cpu boxes?
Why don't they have a modular design where you only have to compile what needs to be compiled?
...

My guess would be recompiling the *entire* source is 24 hours - and that smaller changes takes a smaller amount of time. And I'm also pretty sure Microsoft has some pretty nifty clusters...

Well, limit user accounts to non-admin privileges, use policies to turn autorun off... that should be one step closer. But of course stupid users click PamelaNude.jpg.exe containing a 0day virus/trojan, that's hard to stop.

Funny enough, the CPU load when I use my HDD enclosure is about the same whether I use USB2 or FireWire... FireWire gives better speed at (approximately) the same CPU speed, though.

tilde:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde
Also known as the "console key" in games inspired by Quake :). On Danish keyboards, what is the tilde key to you is ½/§ (no-shift/shift). Our tilde is located on the key right left of enter, and requires and altgr combo.

It's hard to pick a favourite. But probably CTRL, because it's used a lot in keyboard shortcuts. Also, almost no program reacts to a CTRL without a combination key, so CTRL is usually what I use to bring a PC out of monitor standby mode.

TAB is also very nice, indenting as well as tabbing between programs (which requires AltGr+TAB here). On the topic of AltGr, with a Danish keyboard layout I need it to produce chars like @£${[]}| - located on 2347890 and key-left-of-backspace, respectively. (Remind me to start switching to US layout when programming, since those chars are mapped a lot nicer there. Yes, I am fluent with US layout as well, because of the old DOS days.)

Win key is also nice - I use Win+R a lot, as well as Win+E. Also, the context-menu WinKey is a lifesaver.

My keyboard has a Power button, I find it very convenient to avoid bending down to reach the case.
I hate those keys, all the keyboards I've seen have had them located so I hit them accidentally. I really do miss volume up/down on my vanilla IBM keyboard, though :(

You cannot remove it from add/remove programs, even when you check "show windows updates". Windows will tell you that this file cannot be removed.

You can use something like SysInternals' AutoRuns to disable the necessary stuff. Iirc there's both a service(!) as well as a Winlogon Notify(!!!) entry. Then you can delete a couple of DLL files with WGA* in their name (Wgatraynotify or something similar sounding, iirc). If you get a "file in use" error, you might need to reboot windows first.

So... yeah, it can be uninstalled, but not by regular end-users.
8521
Just take the SecurityNow stuff with a grain of salt, dismiss the conspiracy theories, and do your own research before trusting any of it. Then you'll be fine. Gibson isn't a "security expert", he merely digests other people's work, without always understanding it properly.
8522
sunsound: because of his use of BIG COLORED WORDS, conspiracy theories, generally not understanding exactly what he's dealing with, blowing things (including his own accomplishments) out of proportion, et cetera.

[/offtopic]I never got it, why do people say *nix, of *u*x, or something else instead of unix?[/offtopic]

*nix, is short for Unix and/or Linux (including BSD, AT&T Unix, and Solaris).
In other words, very generic unix and not vendor specific.

I've always though saying *nix when you mean "possibly linux" is a bit silly - linux would be "*nux". *u*x fits both "unix" and "linux"  :P

Both are a bit silly anyway, since there's other unix-like systems than linux, whose name isn't matched in *u*x. And setting up a regular expression that also matches BSD and VMS and friends, without being a simple alternation...

*big grin*  8)

Rover: don't you actually mean that NTFS hardlinks are the equivalent of *u*x hardlinks? :) (if not using a protective program such as NTFSlink).

Btw., it was my impression that *u*x used reference counting for hardlinks, so that the data went pop only when you deleted the last filesystem entry referencing it?

jgpaiva: you don't need to format, check out the windows built-in tool "convert"... run it from a cmd.exe box.
