I also agree with Renegade (although I'm not sure he meant this on purpose): I'd like to see a small button per post, allowing the share in facebook and twitter.
What about the "I like this" button? I haven't been to DC in a while, and now coming back I've missed this button in at least 3 or 4 posts this week.

That's exactly what I meant. :)

Some of the threads are simply long, and if you want to point out a specific post in there, you don't want to force people to read the whole thread to find it.

I thought about mocking up the screenshot with a Like button, but I usually want to post something with it instead of just "Like" it. Ideally, both would be best, but that's a lot to put in. For speed and cleanness, I'd think that Facebook and Twitter are the 2 biggest, and that's enough.

With the customization simply being a question of modifying an array why not add a field in the user profile (in the way self-assigned badges are)? Then members could customize their sharing options themselves.

I think that's a great idea!

It's only later you look back in shame, especially for teenagers.

Hehe~! When I was a teen, there were no digital cameras. It would be funny though to see pictures of people back then with bad haircuts, drunk and high as a kite~!

a2a_config.prioritize = ["facebook", "twitter", "wordpress", "friendfeed"];

I don't use many. But it's good the way you have it with only a few available at first glance, then more available beneath.

My main method is to browse news on my mobile, then post to Facebook and/or tweet. When on my desktop, I usually copy URLs then go to Facebook. If I'm tweeting, I'll use this.

What would work best for me is something like this:

DC-social-buttons.png

Just saying.

What wouldn't work here is something like I use at Cynic.me:

Screenshot - 2011-01-31 , 7_55_51 AM.png

That's too clunky for here.

The current thing seems pretty good, though eliminating a click would be better.

I'm not sure which is worse. Driving blind or drunk.

Do they cancel out?

Can we safely automatically drive cars if we're blind drunk?

So now we know that the Internet is not a right, it is a privilege that can be taken away anytime.

Oooo... Dangerous...

I don't think I'd ever go that far. It's all about communication, and labeling communication a "privilege" is too far for me. Labeling the Internet a "right" may be far too.

I'm not sure where to draw lines, but cutting communications for people is too far.

Viewing these images requires the free X-Pire browser add-on. Currently only a version that works with Firefox is available. Those without the viewer will be unable to see any protected image.

Am I going to install an addin for it? Nope. Will anyone else? Unlikely.

This testing was essential because the different ways that sites treat uploaded images added lots of complications.

"Facebook, for instance, does a huge amount of post-processing and whatever protection you deploy has to cope with that treatment," he said.

Seems like a waste of time to me. Why not just not put up embarrassing things in the first place?

I like the idea, but it really needs to be a standard, and not an addin.

I can't see that gaining any traction anywhere.

I don't know of any non-mobile end-user software. But you might want to see if OpenCV or OpenCVDotnet for sample projects -- that's pretty common:

http://opencvlibrary...ary.sourceforge.net/

I have yet to explore the SDK, but it looks promising from what I've seen.

In *their* results or in *all search engine results*? Come on, seriously, stop dodging this issue. If it's a Google problem then I want to know about it so I can start using some other system! But so far everything I've tried hasn't been any better than Google in the majority of cases, and sometimes worse.

DuckDuckGo now has a billboard up in San Francisco. Are they advertising better search results or less spam? No. Their sole marketing point is that they don't track you and Google does. Well, I don't really care about the tracking, and the results in Google are as good or better than the competition.

I'll be thrilled when the next search revolution comes on and does to the search space what Google did back when it debuted. Whether it comes from Google or someone else I don't care.

- Oshyan

I really only use Google as they are more consistent. As for other engines, not sure. I'm usually disappointed whenever I try anything else. I'm not trying to dodge anything. Just wasn't considering anything else other than Google.

I think the simple reality is it's hard to tell sophisticated spam, much less stolen/duplicated content, from good and source content. Even humans have trouble telling the difference often times.

I hope you're right. I really don't know. But the fact remains that there's still a lot of spam in their results for whatever reason.

One thing i will add that was touched on by other posters.

In my (albeit limited) experience, it is a mistake to compare the features of product A (out of the box) to product B (with lots of community-built extensions/addons).

The more addons/extensions you use, the harder it is to maintain, and in general the more likely you are to have problems and strange interactions, and trouble upgrading.

That's not to say you shouldn't use extensions/addons, but it is to say that you should prefer a system whose CORE is closest to your needs, and that relying on a large number of extensions to get the functionality you want is never as simple as it seems.

+1 - I've been burned very badly by modules in the past, and always try to stick to using as few as possible, and often with a view to an "exit strategy" from them if needed.

"Magic Gadget" was one of the best modules ever made for DNN. Then the developer dropped off the face of the earth. That blew. I was f**ked unbelievably hard as I'd relied on it completely. I talked a bit about it here:

http://renegademinds...yID/141/Default.aspx

Pain pain pain...

I also had used it for the altools.net site... Sigh... That took me forever to fix as I had a TONNE of content to sort. Even MORE pain there...

Welcome to The Daily Reviewer

The Daily Reviewer selects only the world's top blogs (and RSS feeds). We sift through thousands of blogs daily to present you the world's best writers. The blogs that we include are authoritative on their respective niche topics and are widely read. To be included in The Daily Reviewer is a mark of excellence.

GACK~! I believe the normal English translation is: "We've stolen your content, so please be proud that we're stealing from you. You must be awesome!"

SEO is in so many ways a dirty game. Google should really just wipe out the dirty players from their index entirely.

It's like a restaurant. First page of the menu is lovely, but page 6 has "creme de la shit" and "mucus sandwich with feline feces". It doesn't bode well for the restaurant.

So why include it at all?

Google hires more PhDs than anyone. They've got so many smart people that I don't believe that they can't solve the problem.

Again, Google ads are the stick problem there. Quack quack.

If they're not lying, then they're just doing a piss poor job of filtering stolen content.

The fact that the thieves are serving up Google ads STILL does not look good.

It just HAS to make you wonder. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... it's probably a duck.

Nope... I've played everything under the sun pretty much.  I'm running a 4e game right now, but that was just the choice of the people I'm playing with.  My favorites have been Amber, the FATE system, the One-Roll Engine, and RoleMaster.  I just don't really like palladium (too dry) or hero (too many rules for no reason)

2 of the BEST systems I've ever seen are without doubt:

Paranoia (The computer is your friend~!)

kill puppies for satan

Here's a quote from the game:

The game is about killing puppies for satan, you didn't think it would not be NSFW, did you? :)
kill puppies for satan
yes every puppy you kill its innocent little soul goes straight to doggy heaven with all the pretty doggy angels. fortunately satan doesn’t give a fuck.
character creation
take a piece of paper and write in big letters across the top: i kill puppies for satan. that’s your character sheet. next write: my name is and put your character’s name. you get four stats, so write them next in a little column: cold, fucked up, mean, and relentless. the scale is 1 to 5, with 1 being normal and 5 being diabolical. leave a little space and then write: evil. killing puppies (and other animals) gives you evil, which you then get to spend on doing supernatural evil things. now leave a big space and write: this many people hate me. this is where you keep track of how many people hate you.
so there’s your character sheet. you get 11 points to spend on your four stats. yes, 11. just give each one a number from 1 to 5 and make sure they add up to 11. remember that satan likes cheaters but the gm doesn’t.
here’s what’s up with the stats.
cold – this is how heartless and calculating a motherfucker you are. make cold rolls whenever you do something that requires exactness, patience, knowledge, or great care, like disarming a security system or reading a book. cold corresponds to intelligence in a normal game. a regular person has a cold of 1, and hannibal lecter has a cold of 5.
fucked up – this is how devious, deviant and weird a motherfucker you are. make fucked up rolls whenever you do something that requires paranoia, edginess, quick wits, or sneakiness, like hiding under a bridge or noticing that somebody’s disturbed your freezer unit. fucked up corresponds to perception and stealth in a normal game. a regular person has a fucked up of 1, and that guy from se7en has a fucked up of 5.
mean – this is how violent and ruthless a motherfucker you are. make mean rolls whenever you do something that requires strength, viciousness, rage, or brutality, like pulling a trigger or snapping handcuffs. mean corresponds to strength and skill in a normal game. a regular person has a mean of 1, and mickey and mallory from natural born killers have a mean of 5.
and finally relentless – this is how gutsy and powerful a motherfucker you are. make relentless rolls whenever you do something that requires endurance, discipline, tenacity, or the will to carry on, like swimming underwater or chewing through leather straps. relentless corresponds to stamina in a normal game. a regular person has a relentless of 1, and jason has a relentless of 5.
now if you absolutely must cheat, fine, take the points, satan’s proud of you. but the gm’s gonna fuckin’ make you pay.

Lots of hatemail for kpfs. Here's one:

Oh so very very NSFW
hate "kill puppies": 10 // hate "for satan": 6 // undeclared: 4 // are fixated on my anus: 1

    Subject: HI
You are a fucking idiot for making a game like this. I myself am an animal lover & it's people like you that make it impossible for animals to live happily without some asshole coming along & feeding a dog anti-freeze to kill it. You disgust me & b/c of you & your game people everywhere are killing innocent dogs b/c they think it's "cool". I have an idea for a game!
How about "BLOW JONATHAN TWEET'S HEAD OFF FOR PUPPIES!" Fuck you you fucking dickwad!!!!!!!!!!!!

******************
in your honor i create:

    fuckwit the roleplaying game

in fuckwit you have only one stat, fuckwitude. it represents how fuckwitted you are. you roll on it whenever you try to do something.

character creation: roll a d10. add 90. that's your fuckwitude.

resolution: when you try to do something, roll percentile dice (d%). if the dice come up equal to or greater than your fuckwitude, fine. carry on. if they come up less than your fuckwitude, stop! you do something fuckwitted instead. roll d% on the fuckwitted action table:
    d%   fuckwitted action
1-45   you send me the "how could you hurt a sweet little animal!" hatemail.
46-75   you send me the "won't you accept christ's good lovin' if you don't it's the anal rape pits for you!" hatemail.
76-95   you send me the "fuck you you're teaching all the children everywhere that it's cool to kill puppies!" hatemail.
    96-100   roll twice.

you get xp's x 1.5 if you put "cool" in quotes.

    fuckwit.

But I've not really played much of anything in years.

For kpfs, even if you never play it, it is very very worth the $10 or so just to read. FAIR WARNING: You may very well piss yourself laughing. Stay close to the WC. :)
