Or with people who are still on dialup (the poor saps!) if a link is taking too long they click it again... and again... and again. Therefore putting themselves into a never ending loop of requesting the page information.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Lets get organized so we can get gaming!

Okay, so I have to admit, back in 2006 when I installed Xfire the first time, I wasn't very pleased with it. It seemed big, obtrusive, and redundant, since the only reason I installed it was at the behest of my friend, who I already IMed with using other IM programs.

But now that I actually know a few people who play games, I'm not too bothered by Xfire anymore. It's nice to see what your friends are doing, the voice chat is fairly straightforward and works well, and chatting within the game works nicely too. I'm not too pleased with the shortcut (scroll lock + x) because I don't like it turning on my keyboard lights, but it's not so bad.

Anyway, it's not so bad as I initially deemed it to be.

DC Gamer Club / Re: DonationCoder map - Sauerbraten FPS fun
« Last post by Deozaan on March 09, 2008, 08:26 PM »
I just have to say that Sauerbraten is the most fun I've had in an FPS since the good old days of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64.

The map editor is in game and very powerful. It's also very easy to use with a mild learning curve. You just push a button to change from edit mode to kill mode. And what's great is you can have people join you and you can all collaborate on a map together. This lets you test things in real time with people you know or strangers on the internet.

If you're interested in games and FPS at all, you really need to download Sauerbraten! I can't recommend it enough!

EDIT: Okay, I feel I should come back here and explain what it is I like about it. I really enjoy being able to create something and work as a team creating something one minute, then the next minute blast other people around on your creation. Plus with the servers, anybody can join in (though you do have standard control like kick/ban, etc.) and instantly tell you how awesome your map is, and people who have more experience than you can show you some cool techniques and help improve your map.

That's what I like about it.

As far as an FPS game goes, it's probably a bit substandard. Weapons don't have secondary functions. No ducking. Changing weapons is a little confusing. . . There are lots of things that make it not as wonderful as something like Team Fortress. But it is Open Source, freely available, and instant, hectic fun!

@Deozaan: I know I can left click, but I prefer to hit the large "object" of an icon, rather than have to position my mouse over this 32x32 tray icon. :-\
-wreckedcarzz (March 08, 2008, 09:09 PM)

Oh yeah, I forgot you like the big icons. :)

I wonder if there is a way to get an AHK script to do what I said for you. Then you could make a big shortcut to the AHK script.

If you can see your desktop, then using Windows default removable drive thingy isn't so bad. Just left click the tray icon once, then select the drive you want to disconnect. Done.

TaeKwonDo is Korean... karate is a Japanese derivative of Kung Fu... Watch it, Deozaan, you'll be ruffling some feathers (heh, heh - pun accidental)  :P

Don't blame me! Mouser was thinking it!

Oh, and whenever I get a "tech support call" (that's someone yelling down the stairs for help), my first step is to ask if they've restarted the machine.  Works 90% of the time.

That's how it was for me when I still lived with my mom.

;D

i'm sure we've all heard the saying "if ain't broke don't try to fix it" or something like that.

i think something similar is appropriate for people afraid to try anything on their computer, i.e. "if it ain't working, don't try to click it" - or something like that.

hmm, that's actually the opposite of what they should be doing though, maybe "if it ain't working, just click it" or "if it ain't working, please, just have a try, go on, just click it - it won't explode, believe, i'm not lying to you".

The problem with this is that it's those stray clicks the really mess them up. I don't know how my grandma does it, but she gets her task bar docked to the side or top of the screen, gets her display turned sideways (for monitors that can rotate), gets her resolution changed... All kinds of things that seem impossible for someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

I don't know why people think they never need to read anything on the computer. A dialog could pop up saying "Warning! Are you sure you want to install this virus that will wipe out your computer completely and release a new strain of the black plague which will destroy humanity?" and someone would just click "okay" because they never read those things.

That's a long time we haven't heard from lanux. Has he left the building?  :(

That was only two days before the site was put down, and it's been back up for less than 24 hours. Give him a couple days, I'm sure he'll be back.

The quick way is checking whether you have a file called ntos.exe in %SystemRoot\system32, like mouser mentioned above.

Is it only ntos.exe? I checked and I have an ntoskrnl.exe in the system32 folder. Is that safe?

Mine too! I've done three versions of my handwriting as a font... but I need to standardize the placement of the letters in the squares as I keep varying it too much and the result is not natural. Need some pointers from Nosh and Deozaan, I guess   :)

Do what Erwin said:

Why don't you activate the (well hidden) colored guidelines? You can do this through the Template page on the Options dialog.

In the options you can print faint guidelines that don't show up when you scan them. It really helped me. You can really see the difference between my first font where letters were all over the place and my second font where most things were pretty well aligned.

It feels a bit like practicing your writing in 1st grade again. Lines of where to put the base of the character, plus the higher line for tall letters and the lower line for letters with "monkey tails."

New note: It could be revealing surprise but i would love to tell you that I'm releasing background graphics & other gaming related graphics soon. This will  be package which contains:
1. Backgrounds
2. Menu backgrounds
3. Level Maps (RPG's) without object sprites

I'm just confused about the hosting of these files. If you know any host please let me know.

All these files will be released under : Creative commons Attribution 2.5 India License
Means you're free to modify and use with free,Open source and commercial applications without paying a dime to me.All i ask in return is give me credit,(again only if you want).

There are a lot of download sites that will host files for you. Alternatively, I know that mouser has often offered DC members with some hosting. I can also offer some hosting, too.

My brother and I have successfully used XFire built in voice over the past week. But we haven't tested it with multiple people at once. He says he notices some lag when we're doing voice, but I haven't noticed anything. We haven't been playing games that require everything to be completely lag free, though. (No FPS games, just MMO type)

thanks for the helpful suggestions everyone. i've set a gmail account up for them. they are likely to actually forget what email provider they are using after they've been abroad so picking an obvious one like google will help them remember - i hope.

this couple would win the award for most clueless pc users ever - bearing in mind they have had a computer since the windows 95 days.

i've made a new post about them here.

Be sure to set up an e-mail client on their PC and set up POP download so they can just open it and go. Have it remember their password and stuff. They'll never need to remember who their provider is except to give out their e-mail address to people.

General Software Discussion / Re: Auto-installer Problem
« Last post by Deozaan on February 29, 2008, 08:39 PM »
There's really nothing wrong with letting it install to drive C: (unless you don't have a drive C)

If you just don't like programs being where they don't belong, another thing you can try is moving the directory it installs itself to to the H: drive and updating your shortcuts. If the software doesn't rely on the registry for knowing where it's installed, that might work. Just remember that this would break the uninstaller and you'd have to remember to manually delete the files when/if you decide you no longer want the software.

Headset and microphone are one in the same, just different chassis. I wear a headset so thats what came to mind first.

I disagree. A headset contains a microphone (otherwise the headset would be called headphones or earphones) but a microphone does not usually come with attached speakers. It can be purchased individually, and aside from a headset, isn't normally worn on the head. My webcam has a microphone. Many people have (or use to have) a microphone that stands on their desk. Microphones are used for all sorts of purposes, most of which have very little to do with headphones.

That means on average an iPod with video should be priced at around $5 to $6 ! (About the right price IMHO)

Agreed! Except my opinion about iPods is not so humble.  :D

Xfire has voice chat built in. It's really simple. My brother and I were just doing it last night. And you don't need a headset. It's just useful.

Regular speakers and a microphone will work. But people will probably hate you because your microphone is likely to catch what's coming out of your speakers and you'll echo.

especially as people have realised that watching a Hollywood blockbuster on a 2" screen doesn't really provide the Hollywood glow of a 60" plasma screen!

But just think, you can watch that blockbuster on that 2" screen for only 1/10th the cost of a 60" plasma screen! What a deal!  ::)
