General Software Discussion / Recommend bulk editor for EXIF/IPTC metadata?
« Last post by rjbull on May 15, 2012, 04:05 PM »
My compact digital camera records some EXIF data in JPEGs, but not author or copyright.  It doesn't appear to write any IPTC data at all.  I know very little about digital images, so:

1) Is it possible to add author and copyright data to EXIF, when IrfanView doesn't show any such fields at present?  I.e., can those fields be added?

2) If so, please can you recommend a batch/bulk means of adding and/or editing EXIF/IPTC data?  I'm thinking of something like a file manager with a thumbnails view where I can mark the images for a particular operation, as opposed to a bulk rename-type utility where all files in a folder are operated on, without much choice.  However, if all else fails, or works out too expensive, I'd be prepared to take that route.

I'm not looking for image alteration features, only EXIF/IPTC data.  Naturally, the cheaper the better  :)

I've heard of several that claim to do something close to what I'm looking for, including (apart from programs that are primarily image editors):

[Edit at UK time 2012-05-16, 22:06:-] Added Photo Mechanic.  Some of these programs are very expensive, given the prices of photo editing programs now. [/Edit]

It's been niggling, but I still don't have a solution to your problem as stated.  I think it's to do with the way that Windows handles the clipboard, and whether target applications "know" to handle incoming clips as plain text or HTML.

I would have liked a similar system where I could copy from a Web page, and have the HTML code as such pasted into a plain text editor.  Many editors can strip HTML, some can do it while preserving links, which would give something similar to what you want.  Still more actions than ideal.  It looks like Firefox extension Extended Copy Menu may be useful:
Provides the option to copy selection as plain text or html.

It adds a "Copy As Html" and "Copy As Plain Text" to the context (right-click) menu. It is useful if you want to copy the text or underlying html from a web page into documents, posts or other applications.

The difference between plain Ctrl+C and Extended Copy Menu on the current DC Forum Home Page is as follows.

Plain Ctrl+C:

CHS sees Ctrl+C and Extended Copy Menu clips as separate entities, as witness the screenshot.  But, of course, this only works for Firefox, and Extended Copy Menu is quite old (I'm still using an old copy of FF).  I presume it should be possible to used editor macros to convert URLs into BBcode or whatever.

What rating out of 5 would you give it?
-Stephen66515 (May 09, 2012, 04:40 PM)

I keep my URLs in LinkStash.  My Books folder has a sub-folder containing 51 FantasticFiction entries, so I'd rate that 5  :)

i'll wait for the upcoming version 4 then..
The deal has been extended to today, 2012-05-10.  The free vs. pro comparison chart at  http://www.listary.com/pro  says license is "lifetime," and even if there's an upgrade fee at some point it's usual for it to be reduced for existing users, so you might want to spring for it in hope.  It's not very expensive anyway.
855
I bought my license via an earlier Bits deal on 2010-03-21.  I can't remember the exact version number at the time, though I think it was 2.x.  I haven't had to pay for any upgrades, yet anyway.  I would read the wording to mean, no upgrade fees ever, but we all know what's been happening to that sort of license.

is it possible to turn off this "Find as You Type" (FAYT) feature? instead, i would like to use Listary for the "Quick Switch" feature and "Favorites" menu.

I'm using Version 3.51.819, last but one.  The Applications tab has these:

Application Settings: (only affect selected application in the list above)
[ ]   Enable Listary for this application
[X]   Track recent files and folders

But, even set like that, I don't think you can switch off FAYT without switching off the other features.  I don't actually use Favorites inside Listary, but I use Total Commander as my file manager.  Listary integrates well with TC (and several other file managers), understanding my TC favourites list.  I tried my editor Notetab Pro with the Listary settings above, and asked Notetab to open a file with the standard WIndows File Open dialog.  Alt-tabbing between TC and Notetab didn't switch the File Open dialog to the folder TC was pointing to.  You might contact the author to be sure, though.

And again today, 2012-05-09.

Channing added some teasing comments about the forthcoming - it's not here yet  ;) Listary 4:

Channing Dai
Answer to one frequently asked question about find-as-you-type search (http://www.listary.com/find-as-you-type):

The find-as-you-type search feature currently supports file open/save dialogs, Windows Explorer and xplorer2. It will support almost all file managers in Listary 4 (powered by Everything search http://www.voidtools.com/).

Listary 4 is almost finished and you can upgrade to it (and all future versions) for free if you purchase now.

Channing Dai @Tore Hoyem
Thank you very much for your testimonial. Here are some of the major changes of Listary 4:
- Ultra fast full disk and subfolder search (using Everything as backend).
- Support for more file open/save dialog and application types
- Specifying behavior of Listary (like toolbar position and how to handle mouse/keyboard events) per application
- Fully customizable toolbar
- Fully customizable double click popup menu
- Setting your own icon for favorite and command items
- Improved performance and stability
- Smaller installer size
- And much, much more...

I wasn't complaining and didn't feel your response was irrelevant.
I think it was more relevant to other suggestions I made in another thread.

I wasn't thinking it needed @mouser's commitment so much as I think he could find the spreadsheet (or something similar, contributed to by the CHS users) useful, but probably only if the users displayed an interest in taking on responsibility for something like that.
I think I feel that mouser's programs, for all their quality and "donatability," belong to a hobby-programming culture rather than to a commercial one.  In such a situation, I felt it would be polite to avoid putting something that might potentially feel like pressure on him.  That's just my perception, of course.
860
Yes, there seem to be a few add-ons around that do something of what I am requesting in this regard, but nothing that does all of it. I think you might have one such in your FF (per image), because I don't get that in my FF. Another is, I think, CoLT that was in @Curt's post of his Waterfox add-ons, here:
Yes, the one I'm referring to is indeed CoLT, which claims to be fully customisable, though I've only tried the basic options.  I have several similar things installed as well.   If you forget exactly which FF extension does what, it's actually rather hard to work it out afterwards from FF itself.

I don't want the feature as a transient record just in Firefox or just in any other application though - I want it as a defined data record in the clipboard manager (CHS), so that all the relevant hyperlink data is saved in the CHS database and can be recalled later.
EverNote and practically all the other notekeeper/outliner/PIMs I've see do it.  So yes, the information is clearly there.

I seem to recall that ClipMate (when I last played with it) did something like that and that it seemed a little kludgy. In any event, it is not what I am requesting here.
Well, I did belatedly add "methinks I'm adding irrelevant responses today" ...

[RANT]
I didn't produce that user-editable Google docs spreadsheet User Requirements for CHS just for fun
But it's only useful if mouser commits to it, and he's got a myriad commitments already.

Snagit will do this easily.

Not sure you would really want to add another screen capture tool to your collection though.

I already have the free license for Snagit 7 that they gave away a few years ago  :)  It doesn't work for me on Vista, though, so it's not much use now.  And as you observe, I already have access to multiple alternatives...

In this context, just imagine that each time you drop an image into the workspace, it lands on a new sheet of clear acetate. [...]

Thanks!  That's the clearest explanation of layers that I've seen.  I still think it's more advanced than I want, but now I see a little clearer what the photoshop fans are driving at.

Thornsoft's ClipMate has a template feature, whereby you can change the format of the clipped material on pasting.  The author warned me not to put too much reliance on it, but it can be quite useful.  For example, here's an area of the CHS page clipped:

CHS_Snap5.png

Here's the template:

#TITLE#

#URL#

Web site visited #DATE#, #TIME#

and how the same clipped material looks when pasted via the template:

Clipboard Help+Spell is a text-based clipboard utility with

Web site visited 06/05/2012, 20:42:03

Clipboard Help+Spell is a text-based clipboard utility with the following features:

    * Database stores history of all past text clipboard entries for easy viewing, modification, and search
    * Use it for keeping hierarchical notes - search, sort, filter by text, modification date, last view date
    * Super easy and super fast search function - or use complex filters if you need them - you'll never have a problem finding a note again!
    * Organize your notes and clips any way you want - show them all or view by group or category; view your clips any way you like
    * High-quality spellcheck - underlined mistakes; learning spellchecker
    * Configurable hotkeys for common functions
    * Powerful text formatting options - make your own presets for common functions
    * Simple functions for copying and pasting into and out of other applications

If you like Clipboard Help+Spell, check out Find+Run Robot and Screenshot Captor

In other words, ClipMate knows something about the page title and URL of a section clipped from a Web page, and can rearrange them for you.  CHS must also understand them because of the way you can choose columns.  I seem to remember requesting something similar to ClipMate's template system for CHS.  That might go some way to giving you your URL functions.

Hmmm...  methinks I'm adding irrelevant responses today.  Time to rest the little grey cells...

There are Firefox extensions that can copy both text and link, e.g. "Re: CHS feature request: smart copy/paste of hyperlinks - https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=30908.0"  That's not really what you wanted, but it's helpful if you habitually use plain text rather than fancy formatting.

Oops...   :-[  looks like you already know about that one.  See screenshot.

Ha! I just dropped in here to recommend Arnaldur Indridason (I'm working through the Erlendur series) an see that rjbull has beaten me to it. I'm currently reading "Arctic Chill" (book number 4) and am very impressed with Indridason's plot development and "mood".
It's a great series, and from the little I know of Iceland (I visited years ago on photographic holidays, and read a bit about it), the backdrop of the merciless landscape is exactly right.  Indridason had me worried with Outrage, the 7th in the series, in which Erlendur ominously doesn't feature, but I see there's now an eighth, Black Skies, to be published this June.

Not sure what it is with Scandinavian thriller writers, especially Jo Nesbo and Hakan Nesser.  Is everybody up there really so polite?  I mean, the detectives go to someone's house to interview them about a murder, but nothing can be done until they've all sat down and had a cup of coffee and a piece of cake!

I think this may be a new feature of version 7, but I'm not sure.
I popped up a query in the HyperSnap forum.  Indded, they say that pretty much everything I wanted is available in HS7, though I'd have to pay for the upgrade.

PPX6 would probably work for you if your intended "final destination" was a printed page -- but (a) I assumed you were more screen-focussed and (b) I was trying to find a free solution that I'd be at least reasonably happy to use myself.
Correct, screen-focussed.  At that point I hadn't thought as far as PPX6's output, only that it should give very precise control over positioning.  It wouldn't cost me any extra as I already have a copy.

IainB's suggestion of OneNote looks good, but I'm not sure it's an appropriate solution to the problem if it's the only likely use you have for it and if you don't already have an Office license.
I already have a license, and if all else fails it may well do, but I agree that it (and some other suggestions) are getting heavy-duty for what I wanted.  I was hoping for something small and simple.

If you already have a PhotoPlus license for pretty much any version at all [...] each dropped image becomes a layer that you can manipulate independently [...]
As soon as people start talking about layers, which I don't understand, the complexity of the software begins to loom large.

(PhotoPlus also has screen capture capabilities, if you're in reductionist mode, although ScreenshotCaptor has elbowed everything else I've ever used for such purposes out of the way!)
At the moment I'm using HyperSnap 6.  SSC is complex, and its Ctrl+Z Undo didn't seem to work for me.

Does OneNote allow you to save the composite as a new image, and/or send it to the clipboard? Yes to both, and in alternative ways. I could explain it but you'd probably be best off trialling OneNote and seeing how it works yourself. A video on OneNote could help - would you like me to point you at some?
Yes, please, for the videos.  I bought a student license for Office 2010 a couple of years back, so in fact I have OneNote 2010 - but had never opened it...   I've had a five-second play, and begin to see what you mean.  It doesn't offer an obvious option to save as a graphics file, but I suppose I could screenshot the composite.

I have a license for HyperSnap 6, but not the latest, 7.  Are you thinking of the "Multi-region capture," or something else?
No, I'm talking about a feature under Capture Settings that allows you to paste each new capture to the one before it, either vertically or horizontally.  You can also set an optional margin between captures.  I think this may be a new feature of version 7, but I'm not sure.

Ah - and thanks, looks like it is in version 6: see screenshots.  Nice, though I'd still like more control.
