General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by Armando on September 08, 2008, 09:41 PM »
OK, I use the Bat at home which has much cooler rules, filters, and coloring features, but now at work I am using Outlook 2007.  So here is my method, based on the GTD philosophy.

GTD is all about being fast, efficient and productive.  With email, especially at work where I get a lot of email, it is not really productive to be moving things around in a lot of folders and categories, etc.  For myself, even for different projects, I'm not going to bother making several different folders for the different projects.  I really don't need to have all the specific project emails have their own folder, because organizing that is a pain in the ass and there's no good rule system to do it automatically, because often there is no particular data in an email/task that distinguishes it from one project or another.  So I'm not going be moving things around manually...no way.

So, everything comes into my Inbox and that's where all the action takes place.  I've set of some GTD search folders.  I use search folders because they are not actual folders, just filtered views.  This way, all the mail stays in the Inbox but I can use the search folders to look at only what I want (like Virtual Folders in the Bat).  The GTD search folders are:
--Do
--Respond
--Delegate
--Defer
--Archive
--Done Items

As soon as I get emails, I will look at it and immediately categorize it (using keyboard shortcuts of course).  Once they are categorized, they will automatically be detected by the search folders above.  So, the only items that will require effort on my part are those in the Do, Respond, and Delegate folders.  I go into those folders to see this list of mails.  As I finish each email, I check it off as "Done" and it automatically gets removed from those folders and into the Done Items folder.  That's pretty much it.  It's quick, efficient, and sophisticated.

As an additional level of prettiness, I take advantage of Automatic Formatting in Outlook 2007 (the one in the Bat is WAY better).  With this, if I look in my Inbox with the all the emails in all categories all mixed together, then this automatic formatting gives me a nice visual way to see things.  So, the items in the specific GTD categories are colored according to their category color.  I also have appointments/tasks/meetings italicized to distinguish them from emails.

So, that's basically it.  It's nice I think.  I like being efficient.

(what happened to that one post about Groupwise??  I was looking for it)

Nice.

Living Room / Re: Hard Drive electrical failure... trash it?
« Last post by Armando on September 08, 2008, 09:24 PM »
Hey thanks guys! It's been an informative thread for me. I'll keep all these info for later as I don't have enough time to perform a surgery on a hard drive these days... But I might, eventually, just for the fun of it.

The AC adapter for the SATA-->USB thingy was definitely toasted. Brought it back today. funnily, there were like 30 boxes on the shelf Thursday, and today... NONE! My feeling is that they removed from the shelves because people experienced problems. When I got out of the store with my money back, I felt a bit  stupid for not complaining that their device burnt my drive (which could be what happened). Who knows... I might've got a new one for free?  :)

I don,t know about the enclosure... Does it still work? I'd have to test it with a voltmeter etc. as I don't want to sacrifice another drive. So I'll keep it somewhere with my seemingly dead drive.

Now, I won't know what happened until I perform tests on the hard drive AND the enclosure (and even then...).

One of these scenario likely happened :

1-only the enclosure's ac burnt; the hard drive was still okay, but I killed it with the SATA-->USB adapter; OR
2- the enclosure is/was actually still "okay" (but maybe a bit too generous in terms of volts...),  my hard burnt because of some internal defect, and the hard drive's short burnt the SATA-->USB thingy; OR
3-the enclosure shorted and burnt the hard drive with it, and then... the grilled hard drive's also killed the SATA-->USB adapter. Typical Greek tragedy plot. So this is probably what happened.

Of course, it could also be a ghost in my house, or my own super charisma.

If I ever going to buy such a device again, it will be a small one that uses a notebook harddisk, which requires no more power than what is coming out of an USB port.

Two USB ports actually.

USB ports are rated at 0.5A @ 5V each.  Modern 2.5" hard drives require at least 0.8A @ 5V to spin up.

Always plug in both USB A plugs before you even consider plugging in the external 2.5" drive otherwise you run the risk of blowing the protection on a single USB port, (usually a fusible link).

I didn't know that. I'm always plugging it in only one USB port only as it seems to work... Of course, I now understand a bit more why it could be risky... :-[

So how do you convert these charts (in watt) into volts and amperes ?

The one thing I do intend to change in the near future is too filter all my email through my Gmail accounts as its spam filtering seems to be better than anything else I have running. And without any work from me. The one bit of sorting I have to do now is to take stuff out of my ISP's Junk folder because it isn't spam. I don't have this problem with gmail, so I'll be able to turn off the spam filter at the ISP.

I agree with you here. Gmail's spam filtering seems to be working pretty well. That + Outlook : works good.

General Software Discussion / Font managers reviews and opinions
« Last post by Armando on September 07, 2008, 07:42 PM »
I've had to play with fonts recently and I realized I was ill equipped...

So started to look for good font managers -- Will be downloading and installing Veign's Cfont Pro and check it out (looks very good BTW ). I used to have Bitstream Font Navigator, a long long long while ago. I was young in these days.

Anyway. I found many rather recent and informative global (even if incomplete) reviews. Here are 2 of them :

http://www.techsuppo...ree-font-manager.htm

http://www.smashingm...ment-tools-reviewed/
fontexpert1.gif

But no reviews are good without some DCers comments and opinions... I know there are a few threads on fonts and realted stuff around here. But it's always fun to ask : what's your take, font experts ? Any all time favorite ?

kk `t -- Toggles recording all text that the clipboard receives.

Do that to stop it then do it again to start it with a message box confirmation each time. :)

Thanks hamradio. unfortunately, the " `" doesn't seem to do anything here -- same as what sosimple explained above .

As mouser said -- maybe an easy (automatic?) way to close and re-establish clip chain.

And here's a request (of course!): can you please make permanent storage of the clips optional? I often copy passwords and don't want them lying around.

As a workaround, I've tried making klipkeeper_data.dat and .bak read-only / hidden. However, I cannot do the same to klipkeeper_data.dat.tmp, because it crashes FARR on exit when that file is unwriteable. Just a little checkbox to never write items do disk, please? :)

Interresting. I've got that "problem" too... I try just dragging and dropping password as a workaround. Doesn't always work, of course. So that option would be nice.

IMO, all clipboards enhancers databases should be encrypted -- and most of them aren't, I believe.

When I was the happy owner of such a similar device, I noted the inscriptions on the power supply. It needed to deliver 12 Volt and 1 Amp for the harddisk (3,5 inch). After an hour my power supply was also hot as hell.

That is exactly it. But not getting as hot... Here, it's not 45 celcius though...  :)

cranioscopical  : thanks for your advice. That's what I'll end up doing. The only thing I have to figure out now is if I'll trash the enclosure too... Maybe. Unless there's some way to safely test it.

Most of it is archived into 3 folders (since mid 90s). When emails are more or less from corporations selling stuff and other insignificant content, I delete instantly.

Apart from my inbox in which I receive stuff from ALL my pop3 accounts (I used to separate into 2 different inboxes -- work & personal... Might have to do that again, but not worth it at the moment...), I've got :

1- emails I sent
2- emails I received
3- "Someday, maybe" -- Slightly following GTD. Stuff that I might look at later, when I've got plenty of time.

[EDIT: forget that I have 3 other categories, but almost never use them :
a- Delegate : when I need something to be taken care by someone else (I usually forward instantly, so almost never use that category)
b- Waiting for... (an answer, etc.) : I should use that one more, but I usually just revisit my sent and Inbox folders, and leave my "waiting for stuff" there. It doesn't bother me.
c- Reference : important messages for future reference. Almost never use that anymore. Use X1 to find anything I need...

Anything that's in my Inbox needs to be done, so I don't have a separate "action" folder. I revisit the inbox many times a day as if it was an action list -- urgent or important stuff, I assign a special action/task to.

I tend to suffer from the "Out of sight, out of mind" syndrome, so I try to keep stuff in the same place as much as possible. Same for my tasks/actions, etc. [/Edit]

I don't organize more than that : I receive so much stuff, it would take too much time -- and it's easy to make mistakes (hummmm.... that should be here... where is it!!! I'll take time to tag stuff only if it's going to be important parts -- references, tools -- of very specific projects, etc.) ! I don't use OUtlook or whatever filters either, as that can be achieved with X1 and other software on the fly. Finding anything is easy with desktop search software.

right now, mail gets accumulated in my PST file. One day I might export everything into something else. But I'm not there yet. ;)

True.
I never use my credit card to spend money I don't have. When money becomes scarce, I re-budget, I find ways to  spend less, etc., I'll even borrow (friends, parents...)... But I will usually not use my credit cards. Of course, context and mileage may vary...

Thanks Gothi[c]. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it would take me much much longer than 5 minutes, as I'd have to search for the burnt part, then maybe buy another (more precise) soldering iron, and finally make the operation a success...  :-[ I've done similar stuff before on a previous laptop motherboard, but it was a bigger connection (AC input).
I'll think about it.
I'm afraid of loosing more time and money on this, so in the end I might just buy a new cheap external HD at future shop... I don't know what I'll do with my current empty enclosure as I don't know how find out it it's guilty or not.

FWIW, my organization at the moment is centred aroud X1 Desktop Search and a lot of rules and folders!

I'm sure that this is working well. If only X1 could be snappier... Oh well. At least, I got (and still use) the free version.

Hi guys. Thanks for your suggestions.

Before doing anything, I will eliminate all variables. There's a short, that's for sure, but where... I followed 4wd's suggestion, and I believe there's something weird on the hard drive... What do you think?

IMG_2700-zoom-comp.jpg

I have a question --> Could a hard drive's bad circuit board (ie : short circuit) burn an external AC adapter ?

What I also have to find out is if

1- the problem is ONLY with the hard drive,
2- or if I've been unlucky and either or both my enclosure and brand new sata to USB converter went bad and one (or the other) destroyed my hard drive at some point. It's possible, isn't it?
3- and/or my enclosure destroyed my hard drive, and then my hard drive destroyed my STA to USB converter...

of course, I'm afraid to exchange my burnt SATA to USB converter  and burn the new one too -- could a bad drive really do that???

Now what...  :)

I could follow 4wd's suggestion and bypass the diode... Is the diode what I "circled" in the picture?

Living Room / Re: What is a mouser? What does it mean to mouser someone?

I vote for a definition change. It should be : When a person gets distracted and goes off to do something else.
John got distracted by the ball of yawn and mousered us.

It has nothing to do with a mouser (noun).

Thanks Edvard and mouser. I think I'll do the drawer + sticker thing. Chances are, I'll trash it in 2009 at some point.

PS : An update : the brand new SATA/IDE to USB adapter started to smell funny too... and its AC adapter became VERY VERY hot.   Hopefully it's not when I plugged this SATA/IDE to USB adapter on my HD that I burnt it.  I plugged another adapter in the same wall socket. Everything seems fine. So have I been unlucky and bought a faulty SATA/IDE to USB adapter too???  To be followed. :(

Living Room / Hard Drive electrical failure... trash it?
« Last post by Armando on September 04, 2008, 06:49 PM »
When I came back from my holidays, I plugged in my external drive. It briefly lit up, then stopped. I thought it was the enclosure, so I bought a SATA/IDE to USB adapter, and... It's dead. Yup. Nothing happens.

So it really seems like something burned in the hardrive external circuits... It smells, well, funny.

Now what? Should I try to bring it back to the store for "recovery"? It's only a backup drive, but I fear there might be something important on it that I forgot about and in a year I'll go : ooooooh noooooo!!!!! It'd be very very surprising though as I'm pretty well organized. It also might be very expensive to recover the data...

I could always keep it in a drawer, just in case...

Anybody with similar experience?

I don't have a debit card either. I always pay cash :)

Nowadays, when you have to travel, it's almost impossible to not have a credit card. Need to rent a car ? Need some more cash but your debit card won't work in that country ? And here in Canada -- but I'm pretty sure that it's the same almost everywhere -- having a credit card allows one to build a good (or bad...) credit report and score... Handy if you need/want to buy a house or anything like that.

General Software Discussion / Re: What would your ideal Operating System be like?
« Last post by Armando on September 04, 2008, 10:28 AM »
So for my ideal OS, I want a well-defined database backend and a set of standard APIs for all, yes *all* these common tasks. One spellchecker. One database for addresses. One for bookmarks, one for to-dos, one for multimedia metadata, one for my email archive, and so on. No matter what email program I use, it should store the email and the addresses in the same one place, so that I can swap clients easily without affecting the data. And all browsers shouls share the same database of bookmarks. And each applications should be able to easily look up phone numbers in a system-wide database. And each application could spellcheck each and every little textbox by hooking up to the integrated spellchecker.
And oh yes, metadata for absolutely everything.

But compatible, portable, backupable, etc.
The file system should probably be rebuilt from scratch, allowing easier 1- file cloning, 2- taging (metadata), 3- Smart folders, 4- Wiki type links between files, 5 - hard/soft links creation, etc. etc.
