General Software Discussion / Re: original win98 games
« Last post by lanux128 on March 12, 2011, 09:24 PM »
i don't have the win98 setup cd but most likely you can search the cab files that start with WIN98_xx.CAB. here are the exe filenames on my WinXP. they would have been the same on win98 too.

You might also take a look at timns' Auspex.  I don't know the limits, just started playing with it, but since timns is an active DC local, he'd prolly accommodate reasonable enhancement suggestions if Auspex doesn't currently perform to your needs.

yes, that's one of the main reason i suggested Auspex as timns is quite active and responsive to user suggestions.

if you have the win98 installer CD, you can just extract from the cab files.

Yep. A cool trip down memory lane. I wonder why Windows ME and NT were left out - didn't they work as upgrades?

that's what he mentions for WinME.

FAQ

1) Why Didn't you Install ME?

Since Windows ME cannot be upgraded to 2000, I chose to install 2000 straight from 98 as it was chronologically the next release.

J-Mac: I think Yahoo paid them money and so they included the search bar, whether or not it makes sense for the user. I have seen this pattern at my former workplace several times.

it's possible that sales were not that good and the devs decided to go this 'toolbar' way.

i didn't know that the 'unsubscribe' link actually works. more often than not, it's like sending a confirmation to the spammer that there is a live person at the other end. i usually hit the spam button 1st and ask questions later. :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is Software for Hardware Always Sucky?
« Last post by lanux128 on February 27, 2011, 09:23 PM »
I'm not sure the 64bit aspect comes into it lanux, upgraded drivers have to be written for a switch from say Vista 32bit to Win 7 32bit too.

this could be the case for newer models but not for older ones. as can be seen in this 'win7 compatibility center' page for canon scanners, some are clearly marked 'not compatible'. i've tried using 32-bit drivers but win7 refuse to run while the 64-bit drivers of the nearest model crashes. all in all we decided that this was too much hassle to pursue any further.

this might not be in line with the original image but with certain vendors' update, you start with one anti-malware tool and end up with two anti-malware tools which will fight over resources and bring down your computer.

the advent of 64-bit OS has become a good excuse for manufacturers to drop support for their older models, by NOT writing a 64-bit driver. thus enticing users to buy new hardware to complement their new 64-bit OS. at our workplace, we have 4 Canon scanners rendered unusable due to us upgrading to Win7 64-bit. i can see how this tactic will expand into other types of hardware.

@MilesAhead: thanks for the feedback. it seems that the WinX series doesn't really add much to the already crowded field of video converter suites.

Sure. I hate to bash something that's out there for free.  But if something looks like a cul de sac I'll mention it.

i too appreciate the fact that the author is giving away the software for free but it's just that i already have a more able software and am quite happy with it. :)

I cannot see why anyone would use pirated antivirus software.  If they can hack it to let people steal it, what else have they done to it? Just pay for what you own, sheesh.

it's quite oxymoronic but it does happen as the devs of Avast! antivirus found out.

does that mean it's then portable?
oh, I see lots of portable versions when I search - is portable freeware reputable?

iirc as of version 2.4.0.0, ImgBurn can be run in Portable Mode via the /PORTABLE command-line switch. you can also add the following to ImgBurn.ini to make it portable: PortableMode=1

The software itself is pretty decent...I just didnt like the installer ignoring my choices.

I had the same experience lately with PDFcreator (sourceforge) ignoring my deselection of the Yahoo toolbar (& it changed default search, the Yahoos). I suppose I should report it in case it isnt intentional....

previously there had been an instance where the installer for Unlocker did something similar. it's hard to determine whether it was intentional or just poor coding.
