I am still learning this tool so I can't give "high quality" answer for some questions right now.

1) Is this correct (roughly!) ? -
The basic idea is that revisions are created locally (automatically when I save files?) and then after a period of time, these revisions are [manually?] synched with another location (or the reverse, originals + revisions in another location and synched to local directory)
-tomos

Unfortunately there is no automation (yet?) like in FileHamster. You need to create repository and remember about committing changes.
Synchronisation is just a matter of pushing / pulling changes between repository and its copy.

2) could I e.g. use Amazon S3 as a location?
-tomos

I've never heard about Amazon S3. I know that Mercurial can use HTTP or ssh but never tried that.

3) is there a lot of maintenance work involved?
-tomos
You have to know what repos you've got but there might be some tool to make it easier.

4) would you say it's flexible - e.g. with FileHamster I can say: "Ignore *.pdf files" or "ignore this folder" or "ignore this file"
-tomos

When you want to add files to your repo you can only get the list of all of them and ignore them there. Currently there is no wildcards support.

4a) Could project location be moved to a different directory - FH has a certain amount of flexibility there - the backups can be easily moved
-tomos

Only files renaming is supported. I did not try moving sources around.

5) if I had a bunch of projects is it easy to keep track of them
-tomos

The biggest disadvantage is that you have to remember what repositories you've got.

Despite all cons, this project seems to me to have better future. I believe that opened issues will be solved nicely because it is actively developed.

I must say that if you are using FH and has no bigger problems with it, keep with that. There is no need to be in hurry :)

Nice idea but the only thing I can think about is... rootkit. Really.

You can't make it standard application because Ctrl+Alt+Del will allow you to kill it. Not service because you can stop running services. You can also uninstall driver, if it comes in such form.

I've seen in the past a system driver which encrypts specified executable files (you need pswd for encrypting in memory) but it can be troublesome for antivirus software and there is always possibility of replacing "invalid" EXE with proper one (not to mention that some software might check its CRC for anti-piracy purposes).

Of course: everything above apply if you have an administrator account. Skilled person can switch off almost any protection. That is why "rootkit" is the only answer.

PS. Well, you can always install problematic software on TrueCrypt partition.

Hehe. I've just came out with excellent idea!

Someone could make Flash app which would work with that:

can you add "comments" to files as you save them or does it work in a different way?
It works like other source control systems:
1. create repository with original files,
2. make local copy of it for work,
3. save results and "Commit" changes,
4. provide commit description for one or many files,
5. "Push" your changes from copy to repo.
Note: you can also work on original files and pull changes to copies...

As I have said: it's hard for me to explain why I am using it. The only thing which comes to my mind is how easy it is to create repository: just RMB and "Create repository here", "Add files" and first "Commit". Sound complicated? Maybe. But with other tools I have always had problems with proper server configuration and with Mercurial I don't care.

Additional thing worth to mention is that I am using Total Commander with few plugins enabled and "Files Comments" feature which makes my work easier. Just take a look on screenshot:

tchg.png

Hg column - tells me is directory in repo,
C column - tells does comment exist,
"File comment" - built-in TC's feature (I can also see comment text in column but I am rarely using that).

PS.1. There is also very nice tutorial for beginners:
http://www.selenic.c...i/index.cgi/Tutorial

PS.2. I still have the feeling that Mercurial is more actively developped than other systems.

I will recommend you Mercurial.

I've used many CVS/SVN systems in the past and there had been always something that bothered me but I couldn't give straight answer "what". I found Mercurial, been using for a month and must say: it's great. IMHO it has better tools and is easier to handle than TortoiseCVS (or SVN).

So... If you are as whimsical in choosing CVS as me, give it a shot :)

General Software Discussion / Re: How would you market Windows 7?
« Last post by fenixproductions on January 29, 2009, 03:59 AM »
If it will be good than simple "Windows 7 - back to normal" phrase can be good.

I can imagine a spot with guy in suit (and super BMW and lot of gel on hairs - white and shiny all of it) vs. particular John Smith being (in American car, obviously - if there's any). The fop can throw money away everywhere: easy girls, easy life and ignorance. While "normal" guy is presented with family, kids and happy dinner table. Maybe daughter coming from school and... delicate text (mentioned above) of advertisement.

Or maybe just a "Windows 7 - no more lies" ;)

"TC issue" is described in Requirements :)

I've been also trying to make Comparer work from Explorer's context menu but registry tricks are not working for multiple files. Comparer is loaded for each file separately. I spent two days investigating this problem back in December and the only thing I could make is to make Comparer use only single instance. In this case it was OK. Unfortunately: I don't want that this way because I would like to have the possibility to have as many Comparers opened as I like.

There might be the way: shell extensions. If someone is wiling to write one for my app I will gladly distribute it together with one package. True is I've tried to write it in C# by my own but it appeared to be too much for me to achieve :(

I will gladly welcome anyone who is willing to create Explorer's menu extension for Comparer.

If you make all pins parallel you'll almost get U.K. adapter.
Or rip off middle one and make two left rounded to make it Polish ;)

PS. Holy cow! I took a look at: http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Power_connector
I think you should be glad that you've got no "IP 56" connector...

Unfortunately: people are stupid and they prefer crap within nice box instead of strangely looking piece of art.

This "rule" explains a lot of bad software being sold (and advertised) which is market hit. Too many examples to even write a one.

Sadly, many coders do not understand (or don't want to) that and they try to focus on functionality and not on (ex.) icons. Many users are simpleminded and don't even know what they want. This is where marketing takes a place. People prones to judge books by its covers and managers sometimes take "must satisfy" approach into their responsibilities.... and that is what might be wrong. Managers are not coders, coders - not managers. Many times someone in the middle is missing: UI guy. Someone has to find good balance between look / feel and features set. Someone must know about users' behaviour and expectations. Ms and Cs know a lot but they are not right people for such task. If M takes complete control - you've got gold crap, in opposite situation - unknown power user tool. Most of the software needs to cut the power or make a crap less crappy ;)

I will glorify UI Designers no more but I remember the sentence from one of Bruce Eckel's books (IIRC):
"All developers think they can implement excellent UI but in my entire life I have never met such person."

You stole a lot from my thoughts ;) Good post, keep it going!

One more thing worth to mention is that being a programmer sometimes allows you to gain more knowledge than particular beings.

Ex. When you are writing an application with purpose of being used by businessmen you have to be not only a coder but businessman too. You have to know what they know and understand a little bit of psychology: how are they thinking or behave. This knowledge might be focused on one area only but you have to be better in it than the user.

In the other hand, all programmers I met had one other thing in common: very extended knowledge about many (I should shout MANY) things. They are good in IT, of course, but also in: grammar and orthography (Polish ones), physics or math. They know good books, movies or philosophy. And, maybe because of analytical way of thinking, they were mostly unbelievers.

Axialis IconWorkshop™ Lite installs ONLY if a Professional or Standard edition of Visual Studio® 2008 is present on your computer. Express, Trial or Older versions are not accepted.
So... not for me.

No need for warez anymore, yay!
Why warez?

IcoFX or Greenfish Icon Editor Pro are good enough for creating icons. If someone has bigger needs than he can use Inkscape for most of the time (one of mentioned two only for final touch).

Personally, I was using Axialis few years ago (for a month) and got bad impression of bloated software. It might be good software but for me it is making to much mess in OS. I prefer smaller, free and portable software in many places.

PS. I've checked comparison chart for Lite version and Pro.

Few things are missing but free software has it built in:
  • Create Icons for Macintosh® up to OS-X Leopard
  • Create ICL Icon Libraries for easier management
  • Create 32-bit resource DLLs containing icons
  • Export Icon Images to PNG, JPEG 2000, GIF and Photoshop® PSD with Transparency

Only PSD might not be supported.

As with any job, IMNSHO, you should be judged by your ability to complete your assigned tasks in the time allotted. If you can do that while also spending time on Facebook, so be it.
I can agree with that but whole article sounds to me like "complaints of spoiled kids" who prioritize playing instead of working.

They were chosen by people to fix USA problems. Will they do that while chatting or what? "Wait, Obama. I will fix the crisis but allow me to get few frags first" ;)

We should also remember that they have government positions. If something leaks out in private company, you risk loosing the money. If the same occurs in WH, you risk the security of whole country. This is the biggest issue IMHO.

EOT from my side - too much politics involved...
872
My :two: :
Is it my stupid assumption or they really think that government employees should have houndreds ways of sending classified data outside? Or maybe White House should seed torrents on their machines? ;)
