DC Website Help and Extras / Re: No eMail Notification When Using QuickReply
« Last post by brotherS on April 27, 2006, 01:41 PM »
as far as notifications and email under profile&membership,
it seems i did not enable this for non donating members, but i have now.
Why?

IMHO, you should leave some forum-related benefits for people who donate. It was one of the reasons I made my first donation here by the way.

Er ... if the entire planet was populated to the density of New York where would you grow food?

This planet isn't overpopulated. You could fit the entire world's population in the state of Utah and still not have the population density of New York City. While Utah may not be the most desirable place to live, the point is that there is plenty of room on this planet for more people.
Since you didn't use a smiley I take it you don't mean that as a joke? Sure, you can pile people up like in New York, but there are plenty of other problems to consider. Just google "war over water" - and that's just the start.

Is there any way, i can use the ProcessKiller for morethan one process. Because in my system there are 4 EXEs which are not needed to run but are always running. I cannot/shouldnot uninstall them.
Did you try to prevent them from being executed at startup with a tool like Autoruns? http://www.sysintern...lities/Autoruns.html is very helpful if you use it carefully (don't know how experienced you are).
856
I want to just KILL the process
There's no such thing as "just killing" something ;)
857
If you need to "only kill if ..." or something else more complicated take a look at AutoHotkey: https://www.donation...h2;search=autohotkey

Living Room / Re: New Study Says Drink All the Coffee You Want. Really.
« Last post by brotherS on April 27, 2006, 07:39 AM »
Well that ranks right up there with the most specious argument I have ever heard. The gist of my argument is I don't give a damn about their ideals. That their sole purpose in life...since they have no meaningful kind of life....is to force themselves on everyone else. If they had a really fulfilling and interesting life they would be too busy to notice the sins of others.
Do you watch TV?

While I enjoy a good steak and a drink every now and then, I wouldn't put "coffee and cigarettes" and "real life" together in one sentence
-brotherS
Well I wasn't aware of a real life either until I was older than 13. When you get some real experience then get back to us. :-\
If you *really* think coffee and cigarettes are a substantial part of "real life" (I hope you were kidding) I feel sorry for you. :(

On my Win2000, the tray icon flickers irregularly.  Maybe because it is an old PIII 700MHz office machine..?  :-\
Yep, probably... try to get your hands on an old P-IV machine, it's more fun to use. I don't even dare to ask how much RAM you got ;)

Anyways, I made some modifications to stop this:
Sounds like a nice idea!

:tellme: brotherS, if you disconnect your mouse, does DimSaver still exit?
I did run a series of tests... the only way I could reproduce the bug for sure is when I minimize all windows by pressing Win+D and wait for DimSaver to kick in.

More power to the retards. I really love this comment: You should not be allowed to express yourself in any form of communication. Ever.

:o 'Thanks' for ruining my day...

Living Room / Re: New Study Says Drink All the Coffee You Want. Really? :)
« Last post by brotherS on April 27, 2006, 01:43 AM »
While you health nuts are posting your this or that will kill you warnings, I've got this one to fire back :)

Coffee lovers can drink up without fear of increasing their risk of heart disease, according to a major new study that found people could consume as many as six cups a day without upping their risk.
Well, scientists seem to be not sure about that yet: only last week I read about a new study saying that drinking only two cups of coffee a day is increasing the cardiac infarction risk for those with the according genes already...

I don't suppose that it has ever occurred to all the busybodies out there that those who want coffee, cigarettes, steak and beer really just want to have a real life....and if it shortens the time we have to deal with them it's worth it.
While I enjoy a good steak and a drink every now and then, I wouldn't put "coffee and cigarettes" and "real life" together in one sentence :D

When asked about their biggest regrets, (very) old people mostly named "not taking more risks" - not "not consuming more coffee and cigarettes" ;)

Living Room / Re: How -- and why -- do you use different browsers?
« Last post by brotherS on April 26, 2006, 01:33 PM »
But, it would be so good if some of you who use several browsers -- or have chosen one over the others -- could explain exactly why that is.  Do you like the display?  Do you like the way it allows you to keep several sites available at once?  Do you like the way it handles favorites?  What, exactly, is it?
Well, I'm using IE for the "quick check of something" (with the help of AutoHotkey), and Firefox to do some serious browsing, with GREAT extensions like Mouseless Browsing ( https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3179.0) etc. etc.

DC itself will donate to autoit
Nothing to say against that.

(i guess a dollar-for-dollar) matching donation
For all the reasons (and more) listed here, please don't match it 1:1 - makes me feel bad that the more I give to AHK the more DC *has* to give too.
865
What about the ping command that comes with Windows?
Then I'd need to store the output and check it. I think it's just easier to use jgpaiva's idea.
866
Does anyone object to this?
I do!

My reasons:
- while AHK is based on the old AutoIt code, the AHK author spends lots of time implementing new features virtually every day
- the AHK forum gives better newbie support
- 99.7% of the Coding Snacks on DC are coded with AHK instead of AutoIt

Nah, I use it for things that shouldn't be discussed or made screenshots of. So, someone else should make a Mini-Review if they want to.
You know about ScreenshotCaptor's blur option, right? :D

:tellme: brotherS, if you disconnect your mouse, does DimSaver still exit?  :) Nothing like a simple solution, eh?
I could test that, yeah... what puzzles me is that DimSaver often disables itself within one or two seconds after the dimming completed.
869
my memory is this came up in another discussion (in a renamer discussion?) and someone pointed us to a nice app for doing this.
I remember that too, but if I recall correctly it was a tool that created subfolders based on file names and moved the files in those folders.

Not sure...  :-[
870
Whatcha think? It sounds simple, but maybe there're coding issues I haven't thought of. :)
Hmm... are you really downloading dozens of installers etc. that could be auto-categorized each day?

If you read https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1167.0 you know that I love to automate stuff, but I just add the version number to installers that I download and move the stuff around manually.

Are you willing to add some more screenshots of it to your first post and maybe explain a bit what's cool about it and what you use it for (and how)? We could move it to the Mini-Review boeard then.
872
(btw: if you just want to know if the internet access is on or off on ahk, you could use the URLDownloadToFile command, and check what was it's errorlevel. In case the page couldn't be downloaded, the errorlevel will be different from 0.)
Right, just trying to download http://www.google.com/index.html should work!

I did a forum search (and just now another one) but didn't find anything...   :( Do you remember any key words?

Hi,

I really could use such a small .exe, that maybe would just ping www.google.com and return the state so that I could use it in AutoHotkey. You know of anything?
