I have not even installed RocketCake yet.  But the description is intriguing.  It may be worth a look.

Damn, that does look interesting. Especially since my site has been in limbo for the past year (or so...) because I took it down after deciding it was total shit...and can't for the life of me decide what to do with it.

If nothing else, the name is cool.   It is hard not to download it.  :)

For awhile I was tempted to buy SiteSpinner.  It looks like it can do quite a bit for $50.  Another reason I actually installed it and messed around with it a bit was that the trial only counted the current day against the trial period if you ran the program that day.  IOW, if you don't open it for a week you do not lose a week from the trial.  At least that is how it worked when I tried it.

I never did get going too much with web creation.  I went in the other direction and used Dir2html to generate an index.html file.  :)

The dilemma I run into is the desire to try some templates on one hand, and the desire to avoid tools that produce unreadable html on the other.  I am not a web programmer, much less designer.

But one way to get some structure without paying may be to look at some of the free web page editor/designer tools that come with templates.

I have not even installed RocketCake yet.  But the description is intriguing.  It may be worth a look.

But I agree.  Programmers often make lousy "super users."  They tend to see the program from the inside instead of the UI.

Living Room / Re: Twist Tie alternative?

I asked my daughter about this, and she came up with something I didn't think of...hair clips.

I was thinking of those kind where you press the end and they separate.  The "H" shaped ones.  I can't find a picture of one online.  Something like that would be quick to put on.  But I'm not sure if the end you press to release might not get tangled.  Also an "alligator clip" used by electronic techs may work if the teeth were rubber coated.

But this wire works pretty well.  It takes a while to judge how long to cut the thing in each case.  I could have purchased 4 spools for $1 each and picked them up at Dollar Tree.  But now the minimum order is a case of 24.  The clerk at the Dollar Tree store told me they had not had any of those twisty tie spools in a long time in her store.  But I am pretty sure I saw the plastic hair clips.

Also I think it is a pita that we now assume unknown gender is female.

The picture shows a toddler with ponytails, so it's fairly unambiguous. ;)

See the other thread about the Man Bun.

... and please don't tell me that any DC'ers think a 'man bun' is a good idea

The only advantage I can see to a Man Bun is making 7 figures for doing a job a guy without the bun would do for $25K.

On all but the last item you could add "Rap Artist" to the heading. Also I think it is a pita that we now assume unknown gender is female.  It means typing an extra letter each time.  Maybe we could change "she" to "se" to avoid that?

Here is what I ended up getting:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/24784214

Free shipping and since it was US mail it was no problem sending it to GENERAL DELIVERY.  Instead of twisting and tying I think what I may do is wrap a short length of wire around stuff like USB cable at two ends.  To unroll it all I will have to do is pull the 2 twisty wires.  This spool should last me for quite awhile.  :)

Edit:   btw these are similar to the twist ties on a loaf of bread.  Perhaps 3 times stronger.  The built in cutter on the spool is a bit of a pain.  But the line can be cut easily with scissors.

@Miles, i'm slow...
Think your issue is something i've experienced with Yandex browser in advanced mode.
Some things are just unexplainable (like trying to remove a printer driver that just won't).

It is strange.  I disabled the development mode stuff but still get messages about the script is not running.  What script?  It makes no sense.  They broke FF sometime in the 30s versions.  What a waste of a good browser.  Looks like chrome is going to take over the world.

For this reason I do not install updates to the OS unless I have a specific problem and find an update that fixes it.  The only exception I make is service packs.  At least there is some effort to test after installing the service pack to see that all the fixes play together nicely.  With weekly bundles of updates there's no time for testing.
I can understand what leads people to do this - but missing out on security fixes? Ugh.

I don't feel very secure if my system is broken and I have to waste several days tracking down the permutations.  Also trying to read the update descriptions, unless they changed something, is the biggest pita imaginable.  It seems to be designed to discourage knowing what you are putting on.  They want to do the thinking for you these days.

To find out which extension is using up most memory (another addon!) :
https://addons.mozil...about-addons-memory/

To control memory (yup, another addon!):
https://addons.mozil...ddon/free-memory-20/

I don't think it is the memory.  It is initializing and displaying the button that prevents any input until all the buttons are done positioning on the various toolbars.  I can see it ignoring input until the last button is set.  Then it becomes "ready."  I should check the mozilla bug list.  It must be on there somewhere.
863
Can we ask how many addons you have Miles?
I've learned over the years to keep them to a minimum.
Temptation is strong though!

Perhaps Speedyfox can be of assistance?

More to the point I think is the number of buttons.  Flag in address bar, toolbar has Reader, fast dial, ublock, wot.  Statusbar has Statusbarx, textarea cache, color toggle, Not many!  I have trouble doing without a Fast Dial type of addon and I know it likely slows it down the most.  Bummer.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

How about; then he wakes up, having dozed off in the simulator, and realizes it was all a dream; then he stares at his screen and realizes, it's just started to happen, for real. Then we get a look at his face, and it's Tom Hanks (or ??? -your fav actor-).

Or we find out that MS has created a world wide conspiracy to fool us into thinking that Windows 10 exists and is on more PCs than Windows 7.  That is why all these updates fail.  There really is no Windows 10 to put on!  The "Updates" that succeed just stick some theme changes on derived from Windows 8.  The other 2 GB of stuff it downloads is just to convince people there is something there.  But it is just ballast.

We won't really have Windows 10 until we really get to the moon.  Green screen simulations don't count.

Start delay while extension display their buttons.  For example since FF is my default browser if I start it just by launching a URL there can be a 30 second or longer delay.  Even if I start to a blank page I cannot type anything into the address bar until the extensions are done displaying the buttons.

I tried putting the buttons on the status bar instead but it seems to make no difference.

Anyone know a work-around that would let FF navigate right away and load the buttons afterward?

Edit:  One fly in the ointment.  There is no means to run a utility such as NirSoft DriveLetterView elevated from WSCC(trying to delete a letter without elevation produces the "you do not have sufficient privilege... yadda yadda" in W8.0.)  This makes it hit and miss to launch WSCC in hopes of launching NirSoft and other utilities.

In WSCC, just click on the icon (not description) of a utility in the right-hand pane, e.g. NirSoft DriveLetterView. In the menu that appears, click on Properties... at the bottom then click on the Run tab. Put a tick in the Run as administrator checkbox.

[ Invalid Attachment ]

I'm using WSCC 2.5.1.0 so perhaps your request has been implemented?

P.S. - If WSCC reports an update to a new version of itself then always do this update first instead of updates to NirSoft and Sysinternals utilities. It's how WSCC adds new utilities to the GUI rather than just updates to existing utilities.

Hope this helps...

Thanks.  I don't know how I missed the run as admin checkbox.  Apparently the option was there all along.  No doubt they ignored my suggestion as being from a crazy person.  Demanding they add stuff that is already there.  Heh heh

It must be the clean air in Miami getting to me.  :)  cough cough

Edit: I see no way to save the checkbox setting though.  I right click, then click Properties, check the box that says Run As Administrator in the Run tab.  Now I click the button at the right.  It runs DriveLetterView as administrator and I can delete a drive.  Now I close WSCC.  Open it again, right click on DriveLetterView and click Properties.  The RunAsAdmin checkbox in the Run tab is unchecked nagain.  So I have to do the litany on every run.  Not tops in convenience.

Unless there is a setting to save settings which I don't see.  Also I notice that double clicking no longer launches anything.  I have to click the button on the right column just left of the '?'

Edit2:  Ok it's the same old same old Windows 8 not letting files be written under Program Files.  I installed the free version 2.5.1.0 Portable under C:\Utils\WSCC and the setting is saved.  It did fail to install 5 files but I am not sure which ones.  Maybe they were phased out on NirSoft.  But it seems to work OK now.

The 3.x version is a trial version. I did not realize it before.

It would have been handy to have had it a while back when Firefox used to hang alot (at least for me).

It must be my turn.  :)  It sure hangs for me.  Not frozen forever.  Just sits unresponsive for a variable number of seconds.  Then the keystrokes and mouse clicks will be processed.  It is really annoying.  Sometimes I have to claw the scrollbar 10 times to get the page to scroll down.  It is not waiting for the page to load.  It just ignores the mouse/keyboard until it feels like processing the window messages.

Chrome based browsers seem a bit more responsive but I can find my battery level going down due to running  a dozen processes to do one thing.  No happy medium it seems.  I seem to remember FF 30+ working fine.  Somewhere along the line they broke it.

Edit: Maybe I should switch back to x86.  Not that it makes much difference as far as the hangs go.  But maybe the AddOn will work.  :)

Edit2:  x86 seems to work fine with it.  It survived both a log off and back on, and a reboot.

However, I don't understand how the author got his Firefox to merely use 133MB. Mine is using 533MB right now... I expect Miles is right:

I just noticed this thread was started in 2005. Still going strong. Although the way FF is trending it may wind down in a year or so.

What is the difference between AddOn Toolbar and StatusBar?  I have Classic Theme Restorer and have stuff showing in the AddOn Bar but nothing from this extension.

( image deleted )

btw I am running FF 46.0 x64

Edit:  Never mind!  I had to restart.

Edit2:  Hmmm, mouse hover seems broken now.  Back to drawing board.  :)

Edit3:  Working now.  OK.  I'll give it 5 minutes and see if it stays unbroke.

Edit4:  Maybe someone else running FF x64 can chime in.  But on my system it seems not ready for prime time.  Every time I load FF I have to do a FF restart for the stuff to show up on the toolbar.  Maybe I will try it again in a few months.

Two bytes meet.  The first byte asks, “Are you ill?”
The second byte replies, “No, just feeling a bit off.”

I enjoy a good pun and that one was without parity.

@mouser I'd like to see one titled "Authoring Dummies Books for Dummies."

I would write it  myself but I have some reluctance since I may not be able to surmount the publisher's resistance.  But often I give up easily saying what the flux.  :)

The hazard with using any kind of tuner or performance enhancer that changes multiple settings is that every setting is a variable in the equation.  If something goes wrong it can take a long time to track it down.  It almost forces you to take a system snapshot and just back it off if something doesn't fix in a short time.  Like an hour or so.

For this reason I do not install updates to the OS unless I have a specific problem and find an update that fixes it.  The only exception I make is service packs.  At least there is some effort to test after installing the service pack to see that all the fixes play together nicely.  With weekly bundles of updates there's no time for testing.

This would seem to be already happening by degrees. For example, the developers of addons are being forced to jump through so many bureaucratic hoops with the obligatory "signature" of addons that life has become intolerable for them and they are simply abandoning their addons.

****    Rant Warning    *****

I mentioned this a few times already so please forgive the hobby horse ride.  :)  But MaxThon 2.x was an excellent alternative to IE.  Used the IE engine, had a user community who wrote AddOns.  Often if you had a problem or feature request you could go hang out on the extension board and ask the author one to one and actually get a feature or a good reason why it was too difficult.  Maybe even test a private version.  In short, a very fun community.  The AddOn signing bit killed that dead doornail.  I looked at major version release of MaxThon a couple of times.  Then said "why bother" since I would always remember the glory days of user written code on forums without pop-ups and other annoyances.

Yes, Opera, well I could have warned you...and that's not from personal 1st-hand experience, but rather from what I have read and learned about other people's experiences with Opera.
I wouldn't have bothered in the first place really, if I were you. Kind of a foregone conclusion.

It wasn't so bad back at version 8.52.  I kept using that version for years.  I keep forgetting now it is a chrome clone.  My Opera x64 runs ok, but it is legacy v. 12.14.  I'll have to get used to SlimJet I suppose.  :)

It used to be FF was a dog to load but ran fine once up.  Now it can take 3 minutes just to open on email in Hotmail.
