Living Room / Re: LED Quality
« Last post by Tinman57 on January 03, 2013, 08:25 PM »
Yeah, I think the gist of the article was "you won't know what your getting until the government makes them start ratings them".  Now you would think that they would have been required to do this from the beginning, but in the U.S. there IS NO SUCH THING AS TRUTH IN ADVERTISING!  All you have to do is watch some good ol' merican commercials to figure that out.  Some of the stuff they advertise is so obviously not going to work as advertised that I'm surprised that anyone would actually buy it.  As a good example, just pick any of the non prescription "supplements" advertised that's supposed to make you lose weight at an astronomical rate, or make your manliness hard for hours on end.  I even saw one that was supposed to make a womans breast get bigger.  lol
Then there's the commercials that shows someone trying to do something like cutting food and fumbling out of control like they're spastic.  Then they show them using "their product" at breakneck speeds making perfect cuts.  It just gives me the urge to defecate......

Why do you need the start menu? You can simply click the lower left corner, where the start button used to be, and you can type just as you would before. I don't know many people who navigated the menus rather than typing the entry name...At least users NOT on XP.
I'm on XP, when I want to run an app I just hit Win-Q and then type the first couple of letters of the app I want to run, and Ta-Dah!  It's running.  It's called Slickrun.  But there are times when I want to run an app that I haven't used in a while and can't remember the name.  That's where the start menu comes in handy, or I can hit Win-Q and have Slickrun give me a list of apps...

Isn't that the same functionality that's built in now?

Not in XP.  Slickrun is the first app that I know of that did this.  If it is a feature in Win 8, then MS kind of borrowed the idea from somewhere.  lol

I'm still trying to fathom the logic in skipping directly to a Start Button-less desktop just to have to go back to the thing you bypassed to get what you wanted. Are people really that enamored with their wallpaper?

Place shortcut to preferred desktop application(s) on Start Screen, Boot, Click/Touch, Done ... Why that so hard?

I should run down to the local tire store and pitch a fit because they have no steel banded wooden rims for my pickup...just to see if anyone there has enough sense to laugh at me.
Guess that depends on if it's a 1929 Ford truck....  :P

And what's worse is I just got this in the Dec 31st ZdNet Newsletter.  WTF?

Living Room / Amazon
« Last post by Tinman57 on January 02, 2013, 08:48 PM »
A while back I ordered a Microwave oven from Amazon.com.  After a week of waiting for it they sent me a notice that is was out of stock, even though they showed it as being in stock at the time.  As a sort of retribution to me, they gave me an automatic promotional certificate for $5 on my next order.
The other day I made another order through them, but after processing the order the certificate didn't show up on the invoice.  I sent them an email asking why and they replied that I didn't make an order directly from Amazon, or shipped from Amazon!
WTF???  I ordered on the Amazon website!!!  Just another way they have of screwing you out of every little nickle.  Methinks it's time to stay away from Amazon.  This isn't the first time they've done crap like this to me.

The other problem with buying 'locally' made products is the deceipt in labelling.

Or you can do what Japan did over 20 years ago, created a HUGE industrial complex and named it USA.  The labels on all the products legally stated "Made in USA".

And your absolutely right about China owning the U.S., lock, stock and two smoking barrels.  There was a big controversy years ago about China making large donations to politicians running for congress AND the senate, and their influencing on bills going before congress.  Funny though how after a couple of weeks it just faded away like dust in the wind.....

Are Your LEDs Really Saving You Money?
While LEDs are a green product and use less energy, the market has become flooded with low-quality imposters that won't conserve energy or save you money. Learn how to tell the difference.

It's good that we have the fact checking, mainstream media to help us prepare for winter roads:
 (see attachment in previous post)

Not only did they screw up the spelling, but their advice of "Do not drive in 4 wheel drive" is utterly crazy.  4X4 on icy roads has saved my butt on many occasions, and is suggested in the owners manuals of 4X4's.....
Edit:  However, as heavy as my Hummer H2 is, I probably don't need 4WD on the ice.  lol

Poor 4wd, always getting the blame.

Wait....are you suggesting I'm somehow responsible for Tinman being here today?

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Find Target
« Last post by Tinman57 on January 01, 2013, 08:22 PM »
Hmm, not sure why that is happening. I have never seen that before... Try uninstalling Find Target and re-installing again. Also look to see if Find Target is in your startup. It should not be as it does not run in the background or anything. Just when you click on the Find Target menu item.
It's not running in the background, checked the startups with two different programs.  I'll un/reinstall it and let you know tomorrow...

Update:  Well I totally uninstalled and then installed it again.  Same thing happens on every boot.

On another note, when I uninstalled it I found that it left the folder and all the files intact on my C: drive.  What good is an uninstaller that don't uninstall?

Microsoft said to block ability to boot straight to desktop in Windows 8

Leaked builds of Microsoft's Windows 8 are providing more clues as to what
kinds of user behaviors will and won't be permitted.

One of those tweaks is the decision to block users from setting up their
Windows 8 machines to boot straight to the Desktop, circumventing the tiled
Start screen, formerly known as the Metro screen.

Living Room / Re: Flash Mob - Beethoven's 9th
« Last post by Tinman57 on December 31, 2012, 08:24 PM »
I really like that one but my favourite orchestral flash mob has to be:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=mrEk06XXaAw
The Copenhagen Phil is a great orchestra, but I think they could have picked a better song than Bolero for a flash exibit.

On another note, Denmark was one of my favorite countries I've been to.  I was at Aalborg for 43 days and had a blast.  Two things I learned while there.  1. The Danes love to party.  2.  There were more beautiful blond haired, blue eyed women than I could shake a stick (or anything else) at.   ;D  And Aalborg was/is such a beautiful city.  Everything was clean and beautifully landscaped.  At the time I was there, the people were really fond of Americans, for the most part anyway.  They've probably wised up by now.  lol

Kind of like a movie that I saw where they passed the same rock like 6 times while adventuring through the jungle.  lol

Speaking of which, the one sound you hear a lot in jungle movies: 402kB MP3

From this characterw.
Then there's the water dripping in a cave sound that is not only used in so many movies and series that I can remember, but also in games such as Quake, which is the first time I ever heard it.

shortest piece of US legislation ever passed. Maybe it's like 3 sentences making something a national flower.

So some site called ChaCha (the name already tells you it's like 9th tier quality). Question: "What was the shortest bill in history?" Answer: "The recent health care was the longest bill ever passed."

REALLY??!

So then I went to Advanced Search on both Yahoo and Google. "shortest US bill".
It pisses me off when the first couple of pages of your search is ranked on whether they're paying members or not, even when it don't have anything to do with your search....

Living Room / Re: Found on the Web: Short Rant Against Users of Free Web Apps
« Last post by Tinman57 on December 31, 2012, 06:37 PM »
I've done both and I basically agree. Too many "customers" of my freeware were demanding and rude. The customers of my payware are courteous, thoughtful and pleasant.

cheers,
There are way too many people that expect things for free.  Seems to be the norm today, everyone expects something for nothing.  I'm a firm believer in supporting freeware, even when they don't ask for donations.  I have tried to donate to several programmers that flat out refused because they do it as a hobby or are well off.
When I read some of the post requesting help or suggestions on freeware, these folks get downright nasty and actually makes demands.  For something that's FREE???  Really pisses me off, and I usually slam them and then get slammed by others just like the one I slammed, more freeloaders.
Then on the flip-side there's the small apps that has only one function, like to clear out cookies, that the programmer wants $15.00 for the app.  Are they that proud of their product or just that self-important?
Anyhow, I'd rather donate for quality freeware/shareware software like Screenshot Captor than to buy from big software companies that over-bloat their software, ask for too much money and have shitty support.

I heard about a marketing fail where they used the baby on the jar in some place in Africa, but people thought it was jarrred babies as it was usual there to put what was in the jar/can on the label. Not sure if that's true or not. Could be. Dunno.
Yeah, I read that too.  lol

« Last post by Tinman57 on December 31, 2012, 05:50 PM »
Then I love how they can say stuff like this with a straight face:

"For example, an online storage service called Hotfile sued Warner Bros. Entertainment after that company's automated system flooded Hotfile with thousands of DCMA takedown requests for material Warner had no rights to.

Under the DMCA, any person making bad takedown requests can be penalized with monetary damages. Warner's defense in the Hotfile case is a person didn't make the bogus requests. A computer did. "

There's a way around that lie too, just put a lawsuit against the computer owners.  Someone had to have programmed it to do just that, it obviously didn't write it's own code....

And all of the companies that use Chinese forced labor say "We are aware of the conditions and are working on ways to improve them".
BULLSHIT!!!  First of all, a product like Nike tennis shoes that sells from $75 to $200 in the U.S. and made for less than $10.00 in China should be a good sign that things aren't quite right, but yet they keep on selling them.  They've known this for years and years, but yet they are still made in China by forced labor.  They don't give a shit, their bottom line is $$$$, to hell with everything and everyone else, including human rights, or lack thereof.
If they REALLY want to put a stop to this crap, move the factories back to the U.S. and take a little less profit.  You know the Chinese government isn't going to allow us to do inspections, at least not surprise inspections.  And if they did allow scheduled inspections, they would make everything really nice only for those inspection days.  Payroll records are just too easy to spoof, just keep two sets of records, one for the inspectors and one for the real slave labor records.  The only way they will EVER put a stop to this is to move the factories back to the U.S. where they know they can't get away with it.
But we all know this will continue as long as people keep buying their products.....
