i like the "comments" as "tags" idea. i need to play around with the reports for a while before appreciating what i can do with them - i'm used to seeing a more limited layout.

i had a quick look at History Explorer (by exendo). it looks quite nice - it has a very attractive timeline view. i considered using it, but it doesn't look like you can have individual "watches" like you can with FileHamster, i.e. projects that have their own set of filters and rules.

on a side note: one thing that has annoyed me from the beginning of FileHamster's creation is the ugly popups. they looked horrible years ago and they don't look any different now. i refuse to use them because they look so disgusting - seeing them makes me think i'm using an unfinished, unprofessional program, so i pretend they don't exist.

thanks, i was wondering about this Report feature now that i've installed it. I was expecting the Report to give me a "report", as in, create a report as a file to read through. maybe that was a bit naive of me. i'm sure once i get to grips with how the report panel works i'll realise this is all i need.

i do like your system of using "comments" as "tags". not sure i need to do that but it's a good idea for if/when i do. i'm still adapting to this new layout so i can't offer any suggestions myself yet.

right. that's interesting. i've not installed the download yet. i was worrying a bit that the report feature wouldn't do what i was hoping - but it sounds better than i imagined.

p.s.

thanks for posting the discout link in the first place, tomos. i've probably visited this thread about 12 times since you made that post - each time deciding i didn't need the advanced version just yet - but checking each time that the discount page was still live. (i don't think you can find any reference to the page on FileHamster's home.)

I've been using the last good free version of FileHamster for quite a long time now.

it's was perfect for my needs - until things got a bit more serious. i found myself requiring the "reports" feature that comes with FileHamster Advanced.

so, i've just bought it using the discount link above - which still works fine. very good value for money if you ask me.

i can't remeber if this has been mentioned already but that forum refers to Assox http://sites.google.com/site/assoxhome/ so this is probably worth a try too. thanks, PhilB66.

Gunners File Type Editor looks promising. i've not really tested it yet as i want to do it when it doesn't matter if i break things in the process. i'll try and do it later in the week, with the extension changes that always seem to go wrong.
858
It seems you currently have to get it via "a Tab Candy-enabled build" of firefox, i.e. you cant get it as a simple extension, only with full Firefox.
I'm not that interested - yet.
oh. i'm not that interested either. i'll wait until the hype hits the net in a few months from now - and if it becomes a standard plugin/extension.
859
i read throught the above and thought, hmm, yep - i don't need yet another tab manager...

BUT i watched the video and i think i get it. and here's why:

i use the desktop for throwing loads of icons on - work files and shortcuts. and (as discussed before), i do it because of the "spatial" kind of way you can work with things.

this seems to be exactly what Tab Candy is doing. it's just the desktop for your browser. if you keep a clean desktop (like mouser) then i can see why Tab Candy doesn't really appeal.

i've not tried it yet so i may be getting excited over nothing. but it looks like something i can work with - i think...

okay, thanks, sajman99. i'll take a look in a couple of days (when back at main pc).

heheh, brilliant.

i use Everything a lot and i remember quickly testing out UltraSearch as a possible replacement. it got uninstalled pretty quick - i forgot why so i've just installed it again and played around a bit with it.

i guess it depends what you really need from your search.

UltraSearch is uninstalled again now. it doesn't have the range of options that Everything provides. i won't list them because they are available to see if you look in the configuration settings in Everything.

in brief; it just looks like Everything allows you a lot more ways to fine tune your search. if you don't need all the fine tuning then UltraSearch seems okay.

(i appreciate that if Everything didn't find/display files that i knew were on the system then it would be of zero use and would be uninstalled too. but, thankfully, it appears to work fine here.)

edit:
i've just spotted that i made a post at the top of this thread - that summed up what i've just said. doh.

thanks, Target.

that auto reload appears to be working well. and helps me more than using a hotkey combination - as i will forget what that is. so, now, i can just use the ActualWindowManger tray menu to enable/disable the active screens - and the auto reload script does everything else.

(a few credits sent - hope that is, okay.)

"retards" was the kindest way i could put it.

i didn't mention that their hotkey manager doesn't accept combinations like Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F12. well, it accepts everything up until the F key. so, quite frankly, i think they can just go an F off.

sorry.

Target's method of adding the hotkeys to DialogMove works. i'm not entirely sure if it works perfectly as there seems to be a problem "making things happen". that might just be the keyboard itself, seems i have to hold the keys down longer than expected before the system recognises what i'm doing.

i'll keep testing it out and report back.

just discovered another bad point about the sidewinder's default program for managing hotkeys...

...you can't use the Winkey.  :o

maybe you can use it if you fiddle around with the "macro" manager side of things. but i really can't be bothered to go through all that as it's far too convoluted.

but, seriously, no winkey support? this is a microsoft branded keyboard - how can they ignore their own key.

retards.

ooh, i like that, Target. i wasn't using the hotkeys (without a good reason; just lazy) so i'll check that ActualWindowManager works correctly that way. that would be enough to keep me happy for a while  :)

but, skwire, as for looking pretty, that wasn't important really. i was first just hoping for a few lines of script that i could edit maybe. the real problem is that it could be a very simple bit of code - but it would probably take me a couple of days (or more) to figure out myself. unless i hit lucky.

so, Targets idea will work quite well, i think, just for reloading Dialogmove. but it would be nice if i had a little script i could add to and reload/restart other scripts and exe files. i assume i can just add the same Target hotkey method to all the scripts i want to reload - maybe i just need a script that uses the very same hotkey to kill and restart a list of apps running in the tray...

...this is assuming that ActualWindowManager will behave as expected using the hotkeys.

i'll report back when i've got to my main pc and tried it.

p.s.
it would still be nice to have a script that automatically reloads stuff when detecting the number of screens enabled changes.

i'm using ActualWindowManager http://www.actualtoo...s.com/windowmanager/ to control the number of monitors/screens enabled at any one time.

this is done through a tray icon's context menu - which provides the options of enabling or disabling any 1 of the four monitors plugged in.

if i could remember, i'd simply manually reload Dialogmove (etc.) when i change the number of monitors that are enabled. i just don't make the change often enough to remember - not until i expect Dialogmove to do its magic and i realise it hasn't because of the screen change.

i suppose, Dialogmove could be modified to work in the "all screens enabled" mode at all times. well, maybe, as i really don't know if that's remotely possible.

i think all the new script needs to do is constantly monitor the "desktop" size using the SysGet properties. when it detects a change in the previously stored "desktop" size the script reloads whatever programs and scripts are in the preset list. i'm assuming that it is a simple matter for one script to reload another script that is already running - or kill a program running in the tray and restart it.

or, it could monitor the number of screens active instead of desktop size. not sure which is more likely to work or run into trouble.

okay, thanks, cthorpe.

there is an example at the bottom of that page that seems straightforward. i'll try to work something out, later in the week, if no one else jumps in with a quick solution (it will take me all day trying to get the if statements set up i'm sure).

Finished Programs / DONE: autohotkey - reload script on screen number change
« Last post by nudone on July 19, 2010, 09:20 AM »
a few credits are awaiting if you can just write a bit of a script that does the following, please...

1. monitor number of screens (physical LCD monitors) currently enabled.

2. when number of screens changes - RELOAD a specific ahk script - or, list of scripts.

3. keep monitoring number of screens ready for next reload of script(s).

the problem is that i swap between single screen enabled and multi-screen enabled quite often and i forget to reload my autohotkeyscripts. this means that one of the scripts, DialogMove, isn't aware that the screen number has changed and so doesn't work correctly (until i reload it).

i'd ask Jgpaiva if he'd modify the DialogMove script but:

a: i think he's far to busy.
b: i think that the script i'm requesting might be useful with other scripts that need reloading (or programs that need reloading that i don't know of right now). so, just asking for DialogMove to be modified wouldn't help with other, potential, script problems.

thanks.

edit:
i've just realised i've another program running that doesn't appreciate when enabled screens has changed. it's a small util called "Y'z Shadow".

so, it would be very helpful if the script i've requested above does also have the ability to load in exe files and not just scripts.

thanks again.

thanks for the review, mouser.

you've made a good case for the kindle - i'd never really seen the point of an ebook reader until now.

(i'll wait until they are about $50 though.)

thanks for the praise, but i can't really take much credit - i didn't create the original coding snack bowl.

mouser is the one that chose the DC icons, so it is his keen eye that we should thank.
