What "problem" are "we" trying to solve here?? MITM attacks...on what exactly?? It's publically available content ...
-Stoic Joker (May 16, 2015, 07:42 AM)

Take the case we have here in Turkey. The government liberally censors the web, and the next logical step is keeping a log of who reads what. Then I'd be in deep trouble for just reading something like this.

1984 feels very real in this part of the globe. https may delay it for a while, and I'd support that.

Yes...and hence part of my usage of the word placebo. The base assertion is that SSL is a knight in shining armor that will Keep Out All "Bad People"... However several curtain peeking events over the last year or so show that this is not entirely true. Because some of  the (er...) "More Equal" animals on this planet have a master key (of sorts) that allows them to get a free pass through the SSL "wall"...that's really more of a screen door...if you just so happen to be a bonafide extra special member of the right boys club.

So to me it's really more if an 80's era cartoon superhero hiding their secret identity metamorphosis behind a small plant...with the plotline based expectation that nobody will notice..

My problem is the added expense. I'm only running a few free sites.

Me to, and I include the added resource requirements for all the (IMO unnecessary) encrypting as everything is getting stuffed up the wire.

But as for me, if all I'm doing is serving random content with closer to zero people looking at it than I'd like to think, why do I need to pay extra because it's a 'good idea'?

Amen to that! ...What "problem" are "we" trying to solve here?? MITM attacks...on what exactly?? It's publically available content ... So it would be an idiotic waste of effort to break into a stream of data that you could much easier just go read on your own. That's like encrypting all the billboards on the side of the highway so people have to get and be wearing very special - and very expensive - glasses to be able to read your advertisement messages. WTF is the point? ...Complexity for the sake of itself?? A placebo level of reassurance that people are then "protected" from an academic exorcise that nobody in their right mind is dumb enough to bother with?

It's been said there is a time and place for everything...and I do believe that to be true. But encrypting everything, everywhere, and at all times is just paranoia to the absurd. These hyper paranoid pundits need to unplug, crawl out of their basements, and reacquaint themselves with how interaction with a real person actually works.

It might not hurt to point out to the brass that the Blast-Effective-Zone could have been a lot smaller if they would have let you put in a proper domain back when you originally asked for it.

Because I'm guessing - from the descriptions you've given in other threads - that most folk are romping around with Admin rights. And the only truly proven method of ducking the 0-day stuff is by using reduced (e.g. user level) permissions ... Everything else has time and time again proven itself to be nothing more than a feeble attempt to water seal a screen door.

P.S. Feel free to quote me on that.. ;) :D

Either go to folder view settings and disable 'Hide file extensions for known file types' (so it stops doing the double extension), or do the rename at the command line with ren *.url *.htm

So... This is actually less about SharePoint (and its configuration), and more about finding an automated link harvester that you can turn lose on a SharePoint site ... Yes?

if there is a separate printhead in the printer, as in e.g. most canon printers, surely that will dry out (?)

Good point.

That might also explain why my PDF printers would seem to just disappear from the system entirely, even though the software appears to be working fine. If Windows can't talk to the device any more, it should disappear from the printer list. From Windows' perspective, it has effectively been unplugged. Actually, the more I think about it, the more likely that scenario seems.

Not quite. All things printer are controlled by the Print Spooler. So when the spooler starts it checks the registry (in 4 locations) to see what if any printer objects are to be loaded. If a device is offline or unavailable (for a multitude of reasons), it will still be loaded but be displayed in a greyed out state. It never removes anything ...(ever)... Which is frequently a performance issue if many offline/disconnected printers are installed on the system, especially if they have aggressive reporting/monitoring utilities that will then bring the shebang to a screeching halt. This is why our service department has a purge unused drivers policy to keep the Tech's machines from constantly crashing due to the spool having to drag a load of - for testing only single use - unavailable print device drivers.

This is why seeing the error, and knowing (before/after what step) when it is being thrown would help in figuring out what the issue is. A fax driver is simply a standard printer driver that prompts the user for a phone number before sending it (as a print job) and the number to the (frequently a Multi Function Printer) fax device.

Okay, so outside of having installed one once to experiment on/with - which I ended up never having time to do, I know nothing about SharePoint. But I've been watching the agony which is this thread for a week and thought what the hell I'll see what I can find..

To that end I can across the following link which may or may not be helpful in-and-of-itself ... But might at least help shed some - more specific - light on which part isn't working:

http://www.sharepoin...ocument-library.html

The article seems to imply (to me...) that this should just work in a normal HTML link fashion, so it's possible some key part is either currently offline or misconfigured.

So, maybe we are looking at it all wrong, and simply need to eliminate the cause of the error "write protection message".

Personally I would love to see a screen shot of that error message to try and ascertain its origin. As I too have always had very good luck with the native Windows Fax & Scan utility. This could very well be just a configuration issue.

One of the people here started getting odd emails a few days ago that were of a type she would never expect.  The wording was pretty "graphic" and appeared to be requesting a reply.  All of our systems have up to date AVAST as well as Malwarebytes.

I gotta say this part keeps troubling me ... In what way was it how graphic?? Because if someone is "wasting" an apparently previously unknown - and therefore undetectable - exploit ... It's not inconceivable this could be a (very) targeted attack.

If at all possible, it may behoove you to recover those original Emails for analysis, by law enforcement personnel if the "Graphic" nature was in any way...credibly...threatening..

While for the most part I stick with my now 0 nicotine eCig, I do still occasionally (at the end of ruff days...) sneak out for one of the wife's cigarettes. At which point the absolute last thing I want to even see is anything electronic...unless we're about to play how high will this MF'er bounce.. :D

Pardon me for saying so but I think you may have the wrong idea. Aren't your wife's cigarettes meant to get you high, not elevate the device?
-cranioscopical (May 05, 2015, 07:06 AM)

Indeed ... Which is precisely why I don't want to be bothered with any electronics while I'm...mellowing.. ;)

"Oh look! Some client wanted a MS Project chart. Well, bang that out for me as soon as you can."

"Forced", sure. But not as part of the basic job description, but something that showed up on a one-time basis.

Quite true, not everyone has the luxury of a rigidly defined job description. Some of us routinely get hit with whatever whoever can think up to want ... And are then expected to just shit the thing in an hour.

I'm not sure I'd trust the salt to make it that unreadable...and hammering the outside casing only warps the platters a bit. So for a low tech destruction on a drive that can't be electronically burned (or shot...), I go with disassembly, fold the platters in half by hand (surprisingly not that hard), and then hammer a sharp crease in the folded platter.
-Stoic Joker (May 02, 2015, 12:54 PM)

It's certainly not the best way, but entertaining. :)

Entertainment and catharsis are important, yes.

The salt is just to increase electrical conductivity and help corrode it over time. They're at the bottom of a large garbage bin.

...But this part was really more of a question. Like, for someone with professional data recovery equipment (and a 3 letter name..). What impact would the corrosion really have on the readability of the platters? I'd almost swear I'd seen it done on a DR companies promotional video somewhere.

A few of them really did cave in nicely though. Not as deep as the shotgun blast though.

Here again it's a question of professional DR folk being able to straighten the platter if the metal hasn't been deformed (as in silly putty level stretched) enough to alter the alignment.

Hell, even with the shotgun blowing a quarter sized hole in the platter (blue shirt visible through drive in blown up photo), TBH I'm not entirely sure pros couldn't glean something useful off the remaining (arguably) pristine section of the disk ... Because DR is nowhere near the center of my skillset.

Data Recovery... (see attachment in previous post)
...Not Going to Happen!  :D

When you lack cool toys, data destruction can be done low-tech.

-Stoic Joker (May 01, 2015, 07:18 AM)

Stoic, I have lost track.  Is WhiteTigX or you or both doing the current work on this?
In post 1, I get a 404 for the link in the original post (actually Reply "0"; Reply 1 is the second post))
"www.StoicJoker.com/TClock for general info. Download is still only available here."

I must be dense.  In that post, there are so many "this is here and that is there" that I can never figure out where to get it.  The above indicates I failed again. :)

WhiteTigX has the project now...so his GitHub link (IFP) is where to get the latest build of T-Clock. My site has been down for a while now, as I've restructured/updated my lab and aren't really sure what if anything to do with the site.

Spartan is now called Edge - or maybe 'The Edge' (?).
May be findable searching for that...

Talk about a stupid name... Yikes! I liked Spartan, It conveyed a lightweight nature ... MS Edge just sounds silly to me. *Sigh*

But it's still listed as [Modern Application] Project Spartan in 10074 (just checked). It just takes you to a "Introducing Microsoft Edge" home page.

Coolant flush complete.. Pretty time consuming because i was pretty paranoid about bringing coolant up to temperature and then letting it cool before draining, over and over.

Zoiks!

Open drain on bottom of radiator.
Open radiator cap.
Start engine.
Turn heater on full..
Insert water hose in radiator cap spigot, with a steady running stream (vary to control overflow).
Let water and engine run until drain water clears (~10-15min).
Turn off water and engine.
Close drain, fill, cap, and done.

^^  Interesting.  I have to agree that electronic spark advance has to be more accurate than spring, vacuum and flywheel schemes.  However, once you can no longer see how something works with the naked eye(even if it must be disassembled to do so) then by definition it starts working in invisible ways.  At that point not everything being done can be detected.  The operator is no longer in control.

Ah the tactile joys of working on a true machine. Just springs, gears, belts, chains, and levers...with all actions and interactions in full view where their purposes and beauty of design can be appreciated.

I've been helping a friend restore a 1980 Shovelhead FLH over the past few months, and the experience has been positively therapeutic for exactly that reason. I've been happier in the garage with that old girl and all her quirky arcane foibles than doing anything I've ever done in IT. I even got a bit teary this Sunday when she finally roared to life after many years in a pile of boxes ... For reasons one will either intuitively already know, be incapable of grasping.

To me they are not just machines..

Living Room / Re: Ethernet cables: UTP vs. STP
« Last post by Stoic Joker on April 27, 2015, 02:46 PM »
Interestingly, I did not find any reference on the internet stating that UTP cables would only work up to 100 Mbps.

Nor will you, STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) is just normal Ethernet cable with an extra layer of RF shielding for high (RF)noise environments. It has nothing to do with the speed of the media, outside of ensuring it isn't hampered by external environmental conditions.
