General Software Discussion / calendar software - free
« Last post by techidave on January 10, 2009, 10:03 PM »
I am not sure what my options are for displaying a church calendar on a screen.  I am running MS Office 2003 Pro and have tried some templates (Office Online) but not quite what I want.  It would be nice to be able to print it and perhaps someday sync it to a PDA or even email it.

Our church, which is small, doesn't have lot of stuff going on so if I had to type in to several different programs it would be that big of a deal.

Surely there is something simple, without bloat out there.  Oh and let's not forget easy.  I have Calendar Creator 10 but it is not very simple to use.

Any ideas?

I tried them all and found out of the box, with default options, ViceVersa Free wins hands down.  Some of the others had more capabilities that I didn't need.  At least, not at this time.

This tool will come in very handy and I plan on adding to my list of default software that I install on my own computers.

maybe a possiblity for a coding snack.  After searching DC for a simple folder compare tool and not finding one so here goes.

I am looking for a small program that will compare the contents of two folders and show me the files that make up each folder and then highlight the oddball file that shows in only one folder.  In this example, they will be .txt files but may not always be that way.

I need to transfer some folders between computers but would like to know what is different before copying.

I am just looking for a simple program, nothing fancy.

By the way, I found that Process Manger is not for the weak.  :-[    There is a lot of info in there!

I ended up searching with Everything and found the location.

Now to just have the kids give it a whirl.

As it turns out it was saving it to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\HipSoft\Buildalot folder.  I have given them read/write access and will have them give it a try.

Apparently not all users have read/write access to this folder??

I did add my daughter as admin and she reported that it did allow her to save.  I found a link just this morning about the run as tool but haven't tried that either.  Thanks Lanux for the link to Skrommel's tool.  I will look at that as well.

I don't really want to make them admins.  They download music and play lots of online games.

I guess I could try it and see what happens.  I sure don't like this type of software that won't let all users run it properly.

My kids are having problems saving their games under their user account (not admin).  They can play them, just not save them.  If they play the game under the user account it was installed under then all is well.  I have went in and given them read, write, and modify on that folder but that didn't help.

One of the games is Build a Lot by Hipsoft.  I looked on their website but didn't see any support options, nor did I find anything when I googled it.  They also have this same problem with a Sudoko game.  The games all run from the hard drive.

Running XP Pro SP3.  The wife and I are the only admins on this computer, the kids are standard users.

Any ideas??  Happy New Year!!

-Outertech Support (December 18, 2008, 02:50 PM)

The Linkman Free installer collects no personal user information whatsoever. You don't have to provide any information, not even your name. You get some adverts for other software/products during the installation with an accept/decline button. If you decline the other programs only Linkman Free will be installed and nothing else.

[/quote]

I did decline everything and still got more than I had planned on.  I shall not try your software again based on previous experience.  Yeah, at least it didn't ask for any personal info that I remember.   :(

I don't have thousands of bookmarks but I do have hundreds and was looking forward to something easy and fast.  Oh well.

I just downloaded the Linkman Free tonite from the Outertech website but it didn't live up to the reviews IMHO.  Once I told it to not install anything else, it offers quite a few and then tells you can remove them from add/remove which you cannot.

Upon restarting Firefox, it then opened a new window in IE 6 to a freeze.com news site which I did not want nor agree to.  So I immediately uninstalled it since it acted like malware to me.

It also had offered to to install SearchSquire and New.net.  I should have know better when it wanted to install from freeze.com but the name didn't jog my memory at first.

I was also suspicious when I downloaded a 4.5 meg file that I thought was Linkman Free and then during the install it downloaded something else.  who knows what.

Anyway the Revo Uninstaller did a good job in uninstalling it. I will run my a/v program tonite just to make sure  everything is gone.

My experience says "Stay away"!

General Software Discussion / Re: create fill in the blank in PowerPoint
« Last post by techidave on December 12, 2008, 06:05 AM »
I again just tried creating a fill in the blank from scratch and this time I succeeded.  The problem I was having was creating the text box right over the line and then the line didn't show.

But I just tried it and even when I do it now, it works.

I am now more confused than ever.

I opend cthorpe's ppt again on a different computer and it was ok.  I opened it again just now on my home computer and the first fill in was off.  I dragged it back and all was well.  I just panicked a bit becuase I am looking for an EASY way to get this done so I don't have to do it all the time.  The other people in our church know less about PowerPoint than I do and I don't know very much but am learning.

Katy, I spoke a bit out of turn, failing to realize your solution could be so easy and one I hadn't thought of.  I just experimented again with it and it in fact looks pretty good.   :-[  Sorry about the use of the word "professional".

I have tried that it doesn't look very professional.  Not that I am a pro but would like it to look good.

Thanks cthorpe, the first fill in overlaps the word before it.  I had tried something similar before but couldn't get the fill ins to line up correctly.  I was hoping there was a add in or something that would make this a lot easier.  Plus it seemed to be harder than what it should be to do this.  I need to look at PPT 2007 to see if it might be easier to do this...doubtful.

I even tried the Presenter that comes with Open Office but it didn't do it either.

Looking for an easy way to create a fill in the blank type question in PowerPoint 2003 or 2007.  My pastor would like something like this when I do his sermon notes.  For example:

For God so ____ the world that He ____ His only begotten _____.  And then to have the blanks filled in one at a time on mouse click.

I have look on Google, Yahoo and microsoft but haven't found the answer yet.

I figured the good people at DC would have an idea if this can be done or not.

thanks,
Dave

I actually thought I saw a topic here at DC about this.  I have searched but was unable to find anything.  It also could have been some software that would just create the signature.  I am not sure at this point.   :(

I have a teacher who needs to be able to add his signature in cursive to any document of his choosing.  Word, Pagemaker, Outlook, etc..  I would think there would be an easy way to do this by using a hotkey or something.  He has already scanned his signature, now he would like to place in a document of some sort.

any idea?  we are using Office 2003 and Windows XP Pro if that matters.
