Uh oh, seems like one of those apps you can waste a lot of hours in :)

About frigging time.

Microsoft should never have released WinMe, and should have pulled the plug on Win9x back then, forcing people to upgrade to win2k. The world would have been a better place.

Nifty!

Very interesting. Is there any speed difference between a compiled exe and running the script over the perl exe? Is it really compiled? Or is it just script+interpreter in an exe?
My guess is script+interpreter...

But perhaps with Perl6+Parrot, "real" compilation might be possible?

Hm, why include a media player in a chat client? Doesn't make sense to me. Is it an instance of "the component was there, so I dropped it in"? :)

Very cute graphics though.

Those "magic eye" 3D images... I used to be unable to refocus, but invented a technique where I crossed my eyesight - worked instantaneously, but meant I saw images inverted (where normal people see things popping out, I saw holes). With the latest Tool album (10,000 days), there's some "3D goggles" on the album coverart and some pretty nifty 3D images inside, which I'm able to see just fine.

Pretty amazing cover art, btw.

I completed the game a bit earlier today - it's been one of the better experiences in a long while. It might sound totally whacked out, but I'm rating it up near Half-Life 2. Obviously it's in a completely different league, but I had at least as much fun playing this as HL2 - which says a lot! I guess I really miss well-done retro games :)  :-*  :-*  :-*

Cool!

I can see a reason for NOT storing on disk, by the way - a virus could intercept this *somehow* and mark all files as "oh, but they're good to go". When scanning takes as long as it does, though, it's invaluable. (I'm on an amd64x2 4400+ here, so it's not like I'm running old hardware. I'm very picky about launch speed, though.)

Well, "Private Bytes" is the amount of memory that cannot be discarded and re-read from the .exe (and .dlls) - memory that in low-memory situations must be flushed to the paging file. Working set just means how much memory is currently allocated to the process working set - this includes both private bytes as well as shared bytes.

The "Virtual Size" figure doesn't matter much, as long as "Private Bytes" is low.

There's a reason why the mouse has buttons - and a reason why PC mice have at least two. It works. I'm not saying some more movement-controlled interface stuff is a bad idea, though - move-over hotspots for bringing up toolbars and the like can be pretty efficient.

But a move-over hotspot for "launch nuclear missiles"... I think we need buttons :P

Humm... I find that interface annoying. I usually move the mouse cursor while reading text, to have an idea where I'm at if I get distracted. With his interface, moving the mouse "does stuff". No can do.

When determining memory usage of a process, you should be looking at both the "Mem Usage" and the "VM Size" columns in Task Manager.
-Defenestration
The most important thing to look at is "private bytes" (use Process Explorer), as this is the real and exclusive memory usage for the process.

You may already know this (in which case please excuse me for stating the obvious :) ), but do you have the AMON  setting "Optimize scanning" enabled ?

This feature causes AMON to rescan a particular file after it's been changed, the virus signature database has been updated, if AMON's settings have been changed or an application has attempted to access the file in write mode.
-Defenestration
Yes, of course :)

And it *does* optimize the scanning - until the system is rebooted. The database of scanned files is only kept in memory, not stored on disk.

Living Room / Within A Deep Forest - oldschool game
« Last post by f0dder on July 06, 2006, 03:58 PM »
The same friend that pointed me to Armadillo Run now guided me to http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/ . It's a great oldschool type of platform game with simple but beautiful and cute graphics, great atmospheric background music, cute sound effects, and a simple enjoyable gameplay.

Warning: you can waste a LOT of time on this :-*
8490
Edvard, that sounds like an idea - but the problem is the colors would have to be inverted first, otherwise you still get the same high intensity levels of black-on-white, except now it's just black-on-green...
8491
Big problem with NOD32: it doesn't cache file status, so every time you boot your system, files have to be re-scanned, which makes first-launch of apps pretty slow (AMD64x2 4400+ here, and it *is* noticable >_<). Also, I haven't found a way to disable the background/instant file scanning that persists through reboots.
I'm sure there is an option to only scan new and changed files in NOD.
-Defenestration (July 06, 2006, 07:40 AM)
Not that I've seen... Sure, it doesn't re-scan files that aren't changed while you keep your computer running, but the "scanned files database" is in-memory and doesn't survive a reboot.

New KAV version sounds interesting, perhaps I should give it a go.

I was checking out the Member specials and came across very good discounts on Resource Tuner and Resource Builder. I know these apps can rip/replace/edit resources from EXE's, DLL's, etc., but are these apps really necessary when Visual Studio already includes a resource editor?
-Defenestration (July 06, 2006, 01:36 AM)
(emphasis added by me)
When hax0ring around with other people's executables, perhaps... or if you decide that visual studio is too clunky and would rather use, say, notepad++ and SCons for editing and building.
8493
Looks pretty nifty for, indeed, those emergency situations  :-*

Living Room / Re: Anyone know any good free font sites
« Last post by f0dder on July 06, 2006, 03:36 AM »
When I want to use one or more from my other folder, I just click and open them, then minimize them to the taskbar. They then appear in the font list of whatever applications I use(mainly just used for digital art). When I am done, I just close them and they are removed from the list.
That's a great tip!

Thinking of why this works, as a programmer, it's pretty obvious - to use a font with the standard windows calls, the font needs to be installed. So the Microsoft previewer temporarily installs the font, then uninstalls it afterwards if it wasn't already.

Another approach for font preview (the one that I would take) would be using a 3rd-party font renderer like freetype, which doesn't require installing the font... but that means this trick wouldn't have worked.

Oh well, just my :two: worth of useless trivia :)

Living Room / Armadillo Run - great physics game
« Last post by f0dder on July 05, 2006, 09:51 AM »
Friend of mine linked me to this cute game, which is a barrel of fun. I think I'm gonna purchase it (and live off pasta next month >_<), although I don't like the machine-locked nature of it's protection.

The demo is a bit short - 10 tutorial levels and 6 real levels, but it's enough that you get a good taste of the game. Should run pretty great even on older hardware.

I vote this as one of the best threads ever.  If all of the software alliances, the RIAA, MPAA and so forth would sit down over a long time and discuss like this, so much could be accomplished.
Problem is, they won't. All they care about is maximizing their profits...

Sorry f0dder... not taking the bait on this one.
*grin*

It got pretty damn difficult once those mega-beam ships appeared out of nowhere, and I lost my first ship (not the little guy, though). But it gets even worse later on >_<
