General Software Discussion / Re: DM2 alternative for windows 7?
« Last post by tomos on May 15, 2009, 03:53 AM »
Cheers, that looks like what i need. however, i read in the article that some of the functions can be attain via auto hotkeys? would roll up and down be one of those? call me fussy, but im so used to middle clicking on minimize now, that i often truly believe other machines are broken when it doesn't work.

you could add it as a coding snack request, someone might be able to oblige!

. . I forgot to mention, not bothered if free or not. Had a quick look, but i couldn't see about rolling windows up or down, which is the main thing i really need!

this may be overkill . . but it is very desirable :D

since you've already installed keyconfig, you can change it to any hotkey you want, even Ctrl+Z as in Opera..
yes,
I still had to restart to finish install when I last posted.
It said Ctrl+Z mightnt work due to it being used by Edit>Undo but it seems to work okay for both functions now :)

I'm not sure what the 'functions for keyconfig' does but I dont seem to  need it anyway - actually I think it may simply be a 'sleeping' add-on that enhances the other one.

Looking forward to changing a few more shortcuts, thanks!

Living Room / Re: whats that smell???
« Last post by tomos on May 14, 2009, 05:07 AM »
if that was the case, then how comes the lady that cleaned the fridge was not affected by it?

the fireman said "Someone" sprayed what they thought was air freshener but turned out to be a "spot cleaner" which caused a couple dozen people to be really sick.

I read an article somewhere talking about smells and how we react to them - it was fairly straight forward:
if you smell something really horrible the message the brain gets can induce fairly heavy nausea etc. The idea being to make you get away from the offending smelling stuff so as you dont get really sick from it.
The cleaner didnt feel sick because she couldnt smell . .

funny,
I've been using FF for what seems like years now, but only today have I really followed up on 'where's the option to change the shortcuts'.
I was using Opera again lately and had gotten used to Ctrl+Z re-opening last closed tab. Nice and easy. In FF it's Ctrl+Alt+T . . or, wait a minute, is it Ctrl+Shift+T :-\ - one of them duplicates current tab, the other does what I'm looking for but I'm damned if I can ever remember which one does which . .
anyways,
I've just installed Sri's first two suggestions so hopefully that'll sort me out :)

Came across this by accident
(I know, not what the OP looking for . .)
For April Fools day, Youtube enabled you to view any page and video, totally upside down.

Pretty cute and clever, so I unapologetically stole their code and re-appropriated it as a jQuery plugin. As you can see, I have very valuable time. :-p

Living Room / Re: My (Somewhat Realistic) Dream PC - Is it necessary?
« Last post by tomos on May 10, 2009, 04:50 PM »
... well,
you should know what you want to backup ;D

  • after a recent thread, (cant remember name now..*) I think if I was to get a new PC I would get a smaller drive just for windows and at least one other drive then. Ups the price naturally, especially if you were to get a higher speed drive for the OS.

  • Prob too soon to talk about monitors but I would read the negative reviews of those monitors pretty carefully before going for it! (advantage of reviews at NewEgg is you can zoom in on the bad reviews - not the case at that other site..)

* found it :)

havent used this but I know someone who's giving it a go
CouchSurfing
CouchSurfing is a worldwide network for making connections between travelers and the local communities they visit.

Idea being for travellers you can crash on someones couch and they get rated by visitors so as things will (hopefully) stay above board.
So, not a recommendation, but an idea.

Hmm, I am not seeing anything impressive that would let me spend money really on that list. As far as I can tell Pdf creator can do most of it. ALthough I would not suggest you to use latest versions Pdf creator because it if filled with some spyware, search toolbar crap.

which PDFCreator is that ? - I know there's two (at least) - could you mean the one available via SourceForge :tellme:

Short info: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=18207

I think it would be nice to give 5 licences to "May reviewers" (randomly selected). That way DC can gain an information about good software and maybe break someone's laziness.

The rest of them are up to mouser's decision / ideas.
-fenixproductions (May 06, 2009, 08:15 AM)

sounds great
8491
It would be the best to give licences to people who participate here a little bit more. That is why it could be the best for you to take your time and write review of your favourite software. It doesn't mean another TC description.

You are free to write about almost anything. If you think you are using excellent tool with nice features... and you are sure someone else can find it useful, then write about it. It is "May offer" so you have about three weeks to do so. I think there is plenty of time even for lazy people ;)
-fenixproductions (May 06, 2009, 07:29 AM)

so, is that official then fenix? (competition)
would probably be good to start a new thread to announce it

2) While selecting the modifiers and key groups before scanning allows you to scan for less shortcuts, checking everything didn't seem to take that long.  It might be more useful if you just scanned for everything and then allowed the user to filter the results based on selected modifiers and key groups.

in the panel on the left it would be good to have an 'All' tick-box as well as the 'None' one
8493
thanks Miles :)

I've had problems and am having them again unfortunately, with pasting in apps that are html(?) or have to do with html -
browsers, Evernote.
If you do only have the problem occasionally you can do a simple Ctrl+V paste after the unsuccessful paste and your selection will be pasted - obviously this not a solution if it's happeneing so much (is 90% a realistic or an exasperated estimate!?)

I'd say I'm having the problem less than 10% of the time
Do you get any error messages?
8495
Thanks Tranglos!
It's really nice to be able to see which keys are available - very convenient for planning hotkeys

No idea who's using a lot of those keys :-\ afraid to try them out, god knows what would happen ... :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: BenuBird Pro is now freeware!
« Last post by tomos on May 04, 2009, 08:27 AM »
What exactly does it do? ;)

I'm not fully sure myself but these might help:-
It took me a while to get the significance of the fact that this is a data warehouse app, not an indexer.  When you import into the app, it copies the files into the application- not just indexing it in place.  So if you import 300GB into it, it will take 300GB of space for the DB.  I don't think this is the app for everyone for that reason- if you'd prefer to manage your files yourself, then it won't really fit your paradigm.  But I was tiring of moving my documents around my HD to organize them, and this way I don't have to- I set up whatever kind of view I want, and the document stays in the database.

I have Benubird Pro and have been using it for a couple of months.   Initially, I had trouble figuring it out but, after half an hour or so of tinkering with it, I got the hang of it on a basic level.  I have yet to plumb all its usages.  The tagging component is good in that you can impute whatever pertinent information in the property field resulting in swift searches.  You can access executive files as well.  You can add new files from the dialogue box also.  There are collection, sub-collection and smart collections for which files are made more quickly accessible.  I haven't as yet utilized all its' features but what I have learnt how to do with this program is good.  Best of all for novices like myself it's literally stupid proof.  I have tried similiar applications and for me this was the most comprehensive.
