+1 w/Mouser. :) It's starting to loop. Time to shut it down.

Like J-Mac said, if anything new comes up someone can always start a new thread.

As long as there is constructive conversation, is there really any need to artificially shut it down?  It petered out before, and when Renegade had new information, the thread was still here to keep context... just a thought.

I don't know why some people want to decide if I should use Shift+Delete or not  [beep!][/beep!].

Sorry... I wasn't trying to decide if you should use Shift+Delete.  I was asking in curiousity and trying to help attempt to solve the problem that you had; since I didn't know your particular usage scenario (nor if you even knew about the fact that windows would warn you), I figured I'd ask.

Also from WP, for more squick factor:
Human consumption
Mealworms may be easily raised on fresh oats, whole wheat bran or grain, with sliced potato or carrots and little pieces of apple as a water source.
Mealworms have been incorporated into tequila-flavored novelty candies. However, mealworms are not traditionally served in tequila or mezcal drinks, the latter sometimes containing a larval moth (Hypopta agavis).

Why use shift-delete?  If you use normal delete (and set your recycle bin to a reasonable amount of space) it will tell you if you delete something large unknowingly, and give you some time on smaller things.

That is overreacting imo.
There is no "general thinking here" here on this subject as well as many subjects.
I said "...SOME on the general thinking here."

"That is overreacting imo."
Clearly, you have no problem with someone, without your permission, installing software on your machine, or sending off data about you or your machine--as does OpenCandy.

I do have a problem with that--a BIG problem with that.

You are OpenCandy's dream come true.

Actually, he's one of the negative posters.  The cool thing about DC is the fact that we don't agree on everything, but we have a community built on our differences as well as our similarities.  That's how many of our greatest discussions come about.  If all of us were the same, then what would be the use of debate or conversation, and where would new perspectives come in.  And none of the software on DC as far as I know use any sort of ad mechanism in them- for better or worse, they depend on donations.

And the overreaction would be the leaving the forums just because a few people here like OC, rather than overreacting to OC.  But to each his own.

Oh no - does that mean I am going to see that creepy-looking avatar of Dr. Apps smiling back at me even more then?!    ;)    ;D

Thanks!

Jim

It is a creepy avatar isn't it? ;D

(Thx. I thought it was just me.)

I wonder was it specifically crafted for him- and if he really looks that way...

All those words, and no answer to the questions I posed.  Only three words required... pick one (truthful answer) from each line (they align with my 3 questions):
1. yes no
2. yes no
3. yes no

I think no one wants to go over this again.  If you look through the thread, it will tell you, and have the complete explanation of what it does.

Living Room / Help with new computer build
« Last post by wraith808 on April 10, 2011, 03:07 PM »
I have a problem that's driving me crazy with the computer I just built- moreso because it's intermittent, but not intermittent.   When I d/l something, if it's larger than a few MB, there's a good possibility it will timeout- but not always.  And if it's something that I'm in control of d/l'ing (like a file link I can click again) it will always work the second time.  It doesn't time out after a certain amount of time- the time out is random.  I haven't been able to find anything anywhere that remotely resembles this problem.

My computer specs:
Operating SystemWindows 7 Ultimate (build 7600)
Processor3.10 gigahertz Intel Core i5-2400
MotherboardGigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. H61M-D2P-B3
RAM3576 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
NetworkRealtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

It's plugged into a switch (Linksys) with three other computers that work fine.  That switch is then plugged into my router (Netgear).  No other computers on my network have this problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

I personally think they should hire Renegade in some capacity. He's done more to build a convincing case for OC (despite the fact I personally don't like how OC implements itself) than some of the official communiqués ever did. He also speaks to the concerns of developers and software geeks. And, being a developer himself, on their level.

Hey DrApps! Maybe you folks should consider hiring this guy in some capacity?

Seriously.

Oh, and offer smaller plans. The free offering is a bit little for me, but OTOH I really don't need 100GB of storage. I can understand why they don't want to go into, say, per-gigabyte prices... But perhaps 10 or 25GB increments?

+1 to that.
Dropbox is the same - no smaller plans. Mind you I see you get 100GB with spideroak & only 50GB with dropbox - both for $100
I'd be tempted by a 50GB SpiderOak plan...

That's one of the reasons I like JungleDisk so much.  I only get charged for what I use.  When I started, I was at an equivalent size to my dropbox (about 2GB) for a long time.  I'm now backing up stuff from my kids' and wife's computers, along with more of my own, so I'm up to 8GB now.  I didn't pay for 8GB when I had only 2, and now that I'm at 8, I'm not paying for my future possible use.

That's actually the core of it; it's sort of like hosting plans.  You pay for a maximum theoretical use, which I don't really enjoy.  Especially given that they don't allocate the space in a lot of cases until they actually need it.

J-Mac: he's definitely their propagandist, but at least he's not trying to hide it - and that's something to give credit for.

Strongly agree w/f0dder on that point. As long as the business affiliation is announced up front, I have no problem with somebody being a paid supporter as long as there's no agenda to deceive. Most of us need to work for a living. And getting paid to 'evangelize' a piece of tech is a common and accepted practice anyway. No point singling out any one company or individual for doing that.

I'm not singling him out; he's done that for himself! I'm just saying that I have not seen this kind of paid supporter appearing all over the web in any other program that I use. I personally only see this in what I would call "controversial" apps or devices. Maybe you or others have seen differently.

For better or worse... PhraseExpress is an example of a company that does aggressive marketing through a rep and proxies.

I've never installed anything OC has promoted.
Does it do an auto install if you choose one?
Or does it do it another way?

OC isn't installed on your machine.  It runs in the installer temp directory, loaded into memory by the installer so that functions can be called from the installer.  Once the installer cleanup runs, it is removed from your machine.  Renegade did a test to see if everything is removed, and apparently it is, other than one empty folder.

Ah, yes, I remember reading your review now. And thanks for everyone else's comments.

I don't think the kindle is for me. I've not read a novel in years; I just need web reading and PDF access. The kindle web browser isn't going to be enough.

Instead, a may finally get a smartphone. I discovered today that they've become sensibly affordable at long last.

Not sure how the nook/nookcolor holds up, but it's also rootable in a pinch...

Today's Bits Du Jour has CloudZap for 50% off ($30). It says it works with Amazon S3, so maybe that includes Cloud Drive?

Interesting idea... but it seems like a solution in search of a problem.  And it's definitely not a sync client.

I've been thinking about this some, and have been pondering starting a photo hosting service with Rackspace's cloud. It would be paid only though as I wouldn't want to bother with the nightmares of free hosting. My first and top priority would be reliability, and Rackspace is basically a synonym there.

Anyways, still very far off, and still just pondering the idea. Probably unrealistic... I suppose I'm just thinking out loud...

A friend of mine started something like this.  He used his own servers at the time, and it was pretty full featured.  Using RackSpace or S3 would really make it take off though; it would eliminate a lot of his frustrations with his own server.  It's an idea... (also thinking aloud)

Rackspace Pricing looks affordable to me.

I was thinking about backing up my wordpress database directly into such cloud backup sites. I know amazon s3 and cloudrive are enough for it but are they secure ? or do i need to encrypt the files before uploading ?

I know s3 uses a two key security scheme to allow access to the data, with the two keys being randomly generated.  I don't know if clouddrive uses the same format.

I think that's based on the Jungle Disk acquisition.  I know with Jungle Disk I have the option to use RackSpace as it's now their parent company; I just chose S3.

A little update- I was installing Applian FLV player on my new computer.  It uses Open Candy.  Or at least I *think* it does.  Looking in the EULA, it has something about OpenCandy.  But I wasn't presented with any option other than installing their own premium version... so I'm not sure *what* that was about...

Do you have the Freecorder toolbar?

I don't even know what that is.  I don't have any toolbars in my browsers, though.  And nothing was installed other than the FLV player.
Applian Flv Player is bundled with FreeCorder Toolbar. No OC recommendations, just the EULA though.

Apparently it's not bundled as far as being installed; I don't have it installed on my machine.

And the android 1.6 was the sticking point for me.

I'm not much of a "consumer"...So I like having an "full" OS to play with. My favorite toy is the command line.  *Shrug* :)

Oops.  I'd thought that this one had the whole win7/android thing going too.  There's one tablet device that has both win7 and android on it- android for quick boot/longer battery life, and win7 for power. (ViewSonic ViewPad 10).  I was mixing my devices! LOL

+1 for ReadItLater... I have it too :)

heheh, ooh, that old slate board and chalk would be an even better case to have than the Etch A Sketch one.

I must say, I'm really liking the speed of flicking through content (that's cached). I can see how this would be a pretty good "productive" tool when you're demonstrating things to people at close hand.

Hmm. I think I can feel the presence of the Lord of the I's (as in "I"pod/player/phone/tunes) slowly corrupting my soul.

For further corrupting influences...

I've got a Dell Inspiron Duo (Netbook/Tablet Convertible) here for one of our users. It's actually quite nice from working with it so far.
I'd heard it was pretty lackluster.  And the android 1.6 was the sticking point for me.  How is the weight in tablet mode?  And how is the responsiveness?

Good tips, thanks. I know there will be ways to make it work - just would have been nice for Apple to have done something better with Safari, at the very least.

Oh, I'd agree.  I'd also agree that there are definite issues- the word completion really drives me nuts at times.  But it's a well designed device IMO, that's limited to a large part by the closed minded nature of the parent company.  Most of the limitations of the device could be overcome by 3rd parties.  But even though I've jailbroken my iphone, I haven't done the same for the ipad, because in the end, it becomes more trouble than it's worth IMO with the whole jailbreak thing (and that's a large part because of the idiocy of Apple, also).

I will be keeping the iPad - for the moment. Wraith is right that it has it's uses. Horses for courses and all that. I don't really need to keep it for testing websites as I've now worked out and resolved the issues I was having with a client's website. (For anyone interested, mobile Safari displays text at one zoom level in, but not on all text. I don't see any good reasons for this but you can prevent it with "-webkit-text-size-adjust: none;" and other stuff to avoid targetting Chrome. Mobile Safari also appears to be tempremental about background images - which is a case of just trying other background sizes, etc.)

I *think* my parents do find using the iPad easier than a netbook. They still accidentally hit the wrong things on screen but the use of gestures seems more intuitive for them than using a mouse/pad. I just need to get one of the better iPad browsers that do really work how you'd expect on an tablet - mobile Safari is pretty rubbish, i.e. where's the gesture for "back/forward"; pathetic.

Try iCab Mobile.  That makes the browsing a lot better.  I also use Desktop at times (it allows a browser/app split screen... really cool), but iCab Mobile is my browser of choice (really wish it would allow you to change the default browser).

I like it for media consumption - I use it to read books and browse the web (and in my RPG game), but since I've purchased the clamcase, I also use it when writing my book.  The biggest pluses to me over other devices I have are battery life, single responsibility apps, and portability.

I don't have to worry about charging it.  I've only had the charge run out once, and I charge it maybe once a week.  Bluetooth runs it out faster, which is why I found out that my clamcase makes me have to charge once every couple of days if I leave it on.

When I use an app, I'm using that app, and not shuffling windows.  It has made a big difference in my productivity when writing.

I carry it pretty much everywhere, either in the clamcase or just the device itself.  It's light enough that I don't worry about it, but large enough that I can actually use it.  I use it in addition to my desktop to view things that I would have had on paper or a book next to me.  Basically as a reference.

Placed in the right expectations, it's a home run for me.  The iPhone/iPod would be too small for what I'm using it for; this is the perfect form factor.  And I rarely use iTunes, so I experience that irritation only minimally.  I only use it to back up what's on my iPad.  Purchasing and everything else I do from the iPad itself.

I was as big a nay sayer as anyone else in the beginning.  But to me, it's been worth it.

If you're thinking of doing "work" with the ipad, forget it.  It's just a casual, portable device to have with you.  Check time, check email (not necessarily write email), browse the web, watch some videos, go on facebook.  Anything more than this sort of thing will be frustrating.

There are no workhorse tablets yet.  It's not the fault of Apple or Android, it's just that nobody is doing that yet.  I'm guessing once Microsoft starts going with this (Windows 8?), then we'll be really able to use tablets to do hardcore work.

The iPad by itself I'd agree.  But with the clamcase, it becomes a whole different story.  That's why I had such high hopes for the atrix.  But the reviews have said that it's not there.  But I love that idea- the ability to have one small device that has different 'personalities' based on desired usage would be great!

I'm sure you know about amazon's new cloud file backup service-clouddrive. It offers 5GB free for users and you can buy more capacity for less than the price of Amazon S3. Right now i'm looking for 3rd party sync clients to upload the files from my disk. Any suggestions ?

First a caveat: That 'more for less' depends on your usage.  You pay per year for clouddrive up front, and its tiered, while s3 is usage based and non-tiered.

But as for an answer to your question, there is no API available for clouddrive yet.  There's been a lot of discussion about it on the Amazon boards, but no official responses.  People surmise it's because they don't want to eat their own lunch, though as I pointed out above, there are definite advantages to S3, and not just in pricing.  There's speculation that the clouddrive storage is on their Reduced Redundancy Storage servers.  The difference in reliability isn't that large, but it is a factor.  I use JungleDisk with standard S3 because of that fact.

UPDATE: From a thread on ghacks (http://www.ghacks.ne...free-online-storage/) it appears that Gladinet will work with clouddrive.  I can't verify that, but I figured I'd put it here for a possibility.
