mouser, I'm trying to set up FARR to run on a usbstick and search only (or at least first) in that drive
OS: XP home

I have activated the "PORTABLE=TRUE" line as mentioned above by removing the \\\ before it.
I've added the current path to USB programmes folder and unticked everything else (for the moment) and it's finding stuff

so I'm wondering is that enough or do I need a relative path to the usbstick programmes folder? (if so can you give example of a relative path - I know the theory but havent actually used them. FARR is in same programme folder)

:) many thanks, tom

And while some may prefer to just be quiet about it, to keep some ambiguity, it is our responsibility to at least ask if we want the resulting list to be looked upon with credibility.
-Steven Avery (June 20, 2009, 08:32 PM)

agree absolutely regards list -
but me, (speaking with self-employed hat):-
I'm going to continue using software unless it states in the lisence, or programme webpages, that it is not for commercial use (or that it's only for personal use, or to contact author, etc)

(various edits to previous post)

Re Lisence terms in general:
Having gone through my portable programmes folder and looking at lisences - many arent specific.
Would it not be up to the author to say in the lisence if there are restrictions on use e.g. if it just says freeware and no other comments about how you use it would that not mean usable anywhere by anyone?

memuse show memory in use and available memory. Also virtual memory (page file, I think)
It only works up to XP, seems to be okay for commercial - there may well be something better - I came across it at one stage when I was worried that some of my memory wasnt being used

EDIT(s)

Osiva viewer, again seems to be okay for commercial use
Osiva is free as in "free beer". If you want one free as in "free speech" send me an email.
whatever that means ;)

Resize - 2005 - but very neat image resizer. Portable. Donationware, no restrictions

ToDoList (http://www.abstracts...m/tdl_resources.html) seems to be 'free'
Everything on this site is free, the only proviso being that if you use bits of the code, you may not say that you wrote them yourself . .

Drive Manager
If you have lots of drive letters of different types of drives, such as mapped network drives, thumb drive (USB memory sticks), smart media and compact flash, CD-ROM and DVD then this utility is perfect to help you manage them
Just says Freeware

not sure do you want to venture into word-processors -
because it's light and portable & I just checked the lisence I'll throw in Jarte into the mix http://www.jarte.com/
LICENSE GRANT. Carolina Road Software, L.L.C. grants you a license to use this SOFTWARE on any hardware product. "You" means the company, institution, entity or individual installing or using the SOFTWARE.
inspired by this thread I'm spring cleaning my portable software folder . .

Scan2PDF with install & portable version. Donation compulsory for commercial use
5. License of the software
All freeware programs are free for personal use only, in other case you have to donate an amount of your choice.
I'm not very familiar with this type of software, but I have used this one -
it's not high tech but you can easily make a multi-page PDF from scans and/or image files

looking for trouble are you :D
dont get me started about Adobe lol (at least I've gotten to the stage I can laugh about it, eh . . today anyway)

more of the same:
I'm looking at an upgrade to [English language] Illustrator - it's 40% more expensive in Europe than in US - and that's not even including tax :( (another 20% on top of that waaah)

-Carol Haynes (June 18, 2009, 04:00 AM)
hi Carol
thanks for that offer too - as you can see above I'm now happily sorted.

I was suprised to see it's still selling for up to 290 euros here in germany (mainly the german version which is probably rarer than the english version - I see german language versions of New adobe products are quite a bit more expensive than eng.versions)
But then it's still a very capable programme and for my uses I never needed to update . .

Have you tried calling Adobe? If you have a licensed copy they should be able to supply it as either a CD or a download.
-Carol Haynes (June 17, 2009, 06:55 AM)

after wandering around the website for a [good] while, I discovered they offer replacement CDs - for money - but only for 90 days after an upgrade to that product has been offered.
They really dont care what people think of them do Adobe :(
so I doubt very much that they will offer a download . .

It happened me once (2001 or so-ish) when I didint have a clue* that my email address was used and people received spam from my address. No idea how, but as I say I had absolutely no clue then about anything (I had first started using pc's a year or two prior to that).

What should one do in this situation? (if it's your address being abused) - abandon the account, tell the provider?

heres a short list i like:

and

(They are what he calls "serious" fonts  :) so it depends what you need!)

Just came across this & it looks very good

I need to download an older software (Photoshop 5.5)
I have a lisence/key for it (even have it registered with Adobe)
but it's no longer 'available' and I somehow have managed to lose both original and copy CDs :-[

Problems
  • I'm completely ignorant of this kind of thing
  • I dont know who to trust
  • dont know if download is a trial or not (downloads seem to vary between 50 and 70MB roughly which I presume is related to trial but dont even know which is larger)

The best I could find was http://www.brotherso...photoshop-59857.html
MacAfee says
In our tests, we found a small fraction of downloads on this site that some people consider adware or other potentially unwanted programs.
which sounds safe enough, but I dont know if it's just a trial

then there's something like this
http://rapidlibrary....hotoshop5+5+download
which is presumably much more dubious(?) but at least it says that it's a full version . .

Anyone got any tips?

since carol and nudone are both in the UK, and gothic+della are in belgium for the next 2 months where I know he wants to visit, i think Baby Cody's first itinerary will be:
Me -> Nudone -> Carol -> Gothic

Those who want to host him next speak up.

how about from Belgium to Germany? (Me I mean - and surely there'll be others here)

I had to really use TI#11 lately - I mean do a restore of C drive :) and it worked - gotta say I was very relieved - I find the whole new install thing a total (and very time consuming) pain.
They do have a reputation of doing a lot of 'beta-testing' post-release

With version 11 they offered an upgrade price from older versions (back at least to version 7), so, if that policy continues, a purchase option could be to try pick up an older free version somewhere and get an upgrade
