Living Room / Re: Idea: "DC Member Book X - Volume 1" - Request For Volunteers
« Last post by Deozaan on April 14, 2008, 10:19 PM »
Is this book meant to be like a school yearbook, where we just show who was a member or is it meant to be something like where people who want to can put whatever they want on the page (as long as it's safe for all ages) and have fun with it?

I don't know anything about the available capability or functionality but it seems like this should be doable by exporting each users profile into a standard template.  Users could opt in, then fill in the blanks or update their info as they see fit

or perhaps an optin link that would take you to a standard template with your profile data pre loaded...

submitting the completed templates would forward it to the appropriate admin for proofing and collation

If I understand Target's idea here, it sounds like a yearbook thing that just lists us and what we have in our profiles. If that's the intent of this book, then it's a great idea. But if the idea of the book is for original contributions, then I'm not sure this idea would be very useful in this instance.

Projects like these need a person in charge of it; someone who will keep asking members to turn in their work, someone to proof-read, to encourage, and finally to compile everything and release it.

I've been called "The Grammar Police" on multiple occasions so I could probably help with proof-reading.  :)

- so now we are going after Dell!!  8) Well, if I was president...

:)

My point I'm trying to make is that I don't think a boycott would be a very effective way for us to communicate our distaste for McAfee's practices. We'll have to think of other means to get their attention.

Living Room / Re: Offline Computing: The End
« Last post by Deozaan on April 12, 2008, 08:06 PM »
I think it's pretty far off as well. In a Utopian society where there was no malware and people wouldn't pry into private information or mishandle information, it would be great to have everything connected and available from anywhere.

Since that's not likely to happen, we're going to have to continue using offline computing for a number of reasons. First and foremost is that internet technology, though widely available, is still too expensive and limited or unavailable in too many parts of the world.

Second, we're going to need better encryption being used in nearly all formats of internet use. E-mail, IM, file transfers, web sites, etc.

Third, and this is related to the first, bandwidth is still too limited for web applications to provide as good use and offline software. Although I suppose you could still download the software and install it locally, but it could require an internet connection to use. But that's not cool.

Things are definitely heading in that direction, where physical distribution of media is slowly being phased out in favor of digital distribution. And I can see how this could relate to most things done on a PC. But we've already seen all the problems this causes, with DRM, etc.

There are a lot of changes that need to take place before absolute online computing is feasible.

Incidentally for whatever reason The 2XL Simulator isn't working in Firefox or Internet Explorer. Updating to the latest Flash version hasn't solved the problem at all.  :(

It works for me in Firefox. I didn't try IE.

Mirc Script Pack / Installation

Um, so how exactly do you install these mIRC scripts and use them?
8408
But speaking of trustworthiness and some kind of campaign against McAfee, my feeling is that such demonstartion would have to come from users of the relevant programs, wouldn't it. Or do 'you' think we could all participate?

That's what I was thinking. We can't really boycott the product if we're not using it already. And it's not like you can just cancel your subscription half-way through and get your money back if you are using McAfee. It would require some major campaign that spans a couple of years before McAfee would noticed anything from people no longer subscribing. And I'm afraid that, as I said, McAfee being bundled with all Dell hardware I'm aware of, they wouldn't notice a thing anyway.

sometimes what happens is i release a super minor update that is so trivial i dont want to bother the people via dcupdate.

Mouser! What's the point of DcUpdater if you don't allow us to use it for even the "minorest" updates? DcUpdater is so easy to use to install updated versions that it would be more of an inconvenience to have to go to the website to download and install it than to DcUpdate it a few more times.

Trouble is everyone criticised Windows XP for being a security problem and MS came up with the solution - make it harder for malware by making it impossible for anyone to use it without valium or a stiff drink (preferably both).
-Carol Haynes (April 11, 2008, 06:15 PM)

Not really. What happens is the same thing that happened with Dialog Popups. They pop up so frequently that nobody even reads them anymore and just look for the OK button.

That is, the people who take the time to read error messages are probably the same people who know how to shut off UAC.

But doesn't anyone with any sense/knowledge avoid McAfee anyway?

I'd say a big no on that. Everyone I know who buys a Dell has McAfee bundled on their system. They don't care because they need an anti-virus, and they got it "free" for a year. :deal:

In fact, just before I married my wife, she renewed her subscription to McAfee. :wallbash: I've been trying to get her to let me format all that crap off her laptop and put some good applications on there, but thus far she's been resistant.

DC Gamer Club / Lava Gauntlet - A Sauerbraten Map by Deozaan
« Last post by Deozaan on April 11, 2008, 02:47 PM »
First of all, if you don't know what Sauerbraten is, read more about it (and how to join the DonationCoder server) on this thread. Now then, onto the details of my map:

Lava Gauntlet
A Sauerbraten map by Deozaan
v1.04 5/16/2008

Sauerbraten Corner View with Lighting.png

Description:
This is a relatively small map that is good for hectic deathmatch. A wide availability of powerful weapons (and Quad Damage powerups!) as well as a few death traps ensure that you will die a lot. But don't worry too much about dying, because everyone else will be dying too! If you can survive the lava obstacle course, you will be rewarded with an increase of 50 health points, which last permanently through the entire match! If you see someone else trying to navigate the obstacle course, be sure to pull out your rocket launchers and grab a quad damage to blast them to smithereens!

Download:
FULL download: 26MB (Custom Music)
LITE download: 150KB (No Music)

Screenshots:

Screenshots from versions before 1.03 are now at the bottom of the post.

Changelog:
v1.04
5/16/2008

  • Gave the map a name: Lava Gauntlet
  • Minor texture changes
  • Minor lighting changes

v1.03
4/19/2008

  • Ammunition has been reorganized to make it less easy to get the most powerful weapon right away.
  • Some retexturing has been done.
  • Unused portions of the map which were outside of the "arena" boundaries have been removed.
  • Subtle lens flares have been added to help you know where to aim to kill the snipers behind one-way-walls.
  • Lighting!
    • The chosen skybox is a nighttime scene, so the entire map is a little darker. Blue and Red Bases, however, glow with color to highlight their entrances and pathways.
    • The lighting probably needs more work, but it should be very playable at this point.

v1.02
4/14/2008

  • Fall-through lava death traps have been made smaller because people seemed unable to remember to avoid them.
    • Remember folks, yellow stripes mean caution.
  • Another common cause of death was that snipers would jump off the sniper balconies into the lava death traps. Yellow stripe textures have now been added to sniper ledges where jumping off may result in a fiery death.
  • Reduced Chain gun ammo availability in starting bases.
  • Added a quick escape from the Permanent Health Boost lava obstacle course. If you made it that far you deserve an easy way out.
  • Added teleports back into the arena in the chance someone manages to legitimately get stuck outside.
  • Various retexturing done to help add clarity and visibility to what is where.
  • Just for mouser: Added an extra sniping position in each base using the cheapest of cheaps: One-way walls. Interestingly enough, the only weapons that actually travel through the one-way walls (if you're in the right position) are the Rocket Launcher and the Sniper Crossbow.
  • Added a couple more spawn points.
  • Removed the Super Mario Bros. techno remix from the custom song list. I like the song but it was getting annoying on the map. This means that the FULL Download has been updated to this version, since the song is no longer a necessary part of the download.

v1.01
4/11/2008

  • Added a few more weapons, armors, and health packs around the level.
  • Added bases for Capture the Flag mode.
  • Added cfg file for map which currently adds the following features:
    • Makes sure correct textures show up when the map is loaded.
    • Uses a custom skybox. (socksky/nightball)
    • Custom music track list.
  • Added support for DCUpdater. (packages/deozaan/deozaan.dcupdate)
  • Screenshot now shows when loading map.

v1.00
(Sometime in February or March, 2008)

  • Initial Release. Level layout and item placement nearly finalized.

Living Room / Re: Most useless
« Last post by Deozaan on April 10, 2008, 05:40 PM »
1) Maybe.

2) Pretty much anything from my nephews and nieces, or as I like to call them, my "monkeys." (From the phrase "a monkey's uncle.") It's really nice that they like me enough to want to give me something they hold dear to them, but those things are usually pretty useless. Old toys or things I have no interest in.

Also pretty much anything my grandma has gotten me for Christmas the past several years. Expensive looking Cookie Jars, Snow Villages, etc. They're not exactly useless items themselves, but I never use them and thus far have no intent on doing so. In fact I think they're still boxed up somewhere at my parents' house, since I never bring them home with me after the holidays. Once again, I appreciate the sentiment, but in my opinion the items are a waste of her money and a waste of my (or my parents, as the case may be) space.

3) Two things I can think of, actually:

3.A) I bought a 15-in-1 media card reader and it never worked properly. At least not for SD cards, which are the only things I've tried.

3.B) I also got a retractable USB extension cable, but anything I plug in through it isn't recognized.

I think the real question is: Why do I still have them in my computer parts box?

Sometimes something similar to this happens to me too. Usually it's when the page is taking a long time to load. I figure it doesn't properly load the CSS and a reload of the page usually fixes it.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing or related but just reloading usually works well for me.
8421
Thinking about the purpose of some of these utilities, I see some very powerful tools being used alongside some utilities (er... one utility) meant for kids. The practical application of KidDraw is not very good if the child can also accidentally click on the other tabs that will mess with your registry or whatever.

My recommendation is to create a suite of standalone, specific, applications where each one performs a specific thing.

I think this is spot on. We have great examples just at this website of lots of little software applications that do one specific task and do it well. Just think if Skrommel's One-Hour software all came bundled together. Every tool in Skrommel's catalog is useful. It's been directly requested by someone on this site. But that doesn't mean every tool is useful to everyone. Skromme's One-Hour software would not be nearly the success it is if you had to install all of them just to use the one or two you wanted.

I'm even reminded of some software I used years ago when I was still in high school: AnalogX Software. That guy has a little of everything, and at one point I even regularly used 4-5 applications at once from him. I remember specifically using CookieWall, POW!, MaxMem, Rhyme, SuperShredder, SimpleServer WWW, ScriptDefender, Virtual Piano, and Vocoder. Probably even more that I just can't think of right now.

The cool thing about software like this is that it's small, it's specific to one purpose, and if you like the purpose of the other applications you can get them, too. But if you don't have a use for them, you're not forced to download extra features that as a user you would consider useless bloat.

Okay, so after months of ignoring this thread, I decided to finally try out SnapSuite because some of the things are actually interesting. Amazing what you find out when you read what the product is. :P

So I managed to find a link several posts previous to this one. It was hard to find! Not a good thing, if you want people to actually download your program, you need to make the download link easy to find. Even if you're working on new features, you need the latest stable version easily findable and downloadable! I suggest using your forum signature to link to the post/site with the latest version.

I installed it and launched it. First impressions are very important. That's why your user's first thoughts should not be: "WHAT THE SMURF IS THAT?"

SnapSuite Smurfing Large Icons.png

Seriously? Six icons that take up half of my screen space? BAD! Those could easily be quarter the size (50%) and still feel a little too large. If you really want me to "Get started quickly with SnapSuite" then you need all of the quicklaunch icons available at a glance. I shouldn't have to scroll to see them all.

I think I know what you're going to say, especially based on some screenshots I've seen here in this thread. "SnapSuite is intended to be viewed fullscreen." Sorry, but with dual 19" monitors, there is hardly a thing I can stand to have maximized anymore. Don't force your preferences on your users.

Also, I noticed that when I hover over some of the icons, no description help bubble things pops up, and actually if I hover over the SnapScreen icon, it takes me directly to the SnapScreen tab without me clicking or anything.

Okay, now that I've finished talking about that, I can actually try out the features of the program.

AppLaunch:

I'm not sure how this is coded in there, but since I only have 3 of the applications installed (Firefox, IE, and Windows Media Player) I'm wondering if these buttons would break if someone were to customize their installation path for any of these programs. Then again, you probably did it the smart way and used registry information or something I have no idea about since I don't do this kind of programming.

EDIT: The FAQ answers this question:

Q: When I try to start a program with AppLaunch, nothing happens. What is the problem?
A: You need to have the program installed in order for it to launch. It also needs to be installed to the default directory.

In my opinion having quicklaunch bars for 7 web browsers is kind of useless. Especially if I only have 2 of them installed. I don't know how feasible this is, but AppLaunch would be much better if you could add entries yourself. Or, perhaps an even better idea, is if there's a way to detect if it's installed or not, just link to the application homepage to download it it if isn't installed already.

I also just noticed that the "Recommend a program to add" and "Help" buttons don't do anything for me. In fact, the Help button doesn't do anything for me on any of the tabs. I haven't tried any of the other buttons in the other tabs yet since I want to go through each section at a time.

Speaking of which... On to the next section!

AutoType:

Once again the buttons and things are too large for the screen:

SnapSuite AutoType.png

That means I can't read the instructions. In fact, even if I grudgingly resize the window, it doesn't help anything. How does that make sense?

SnapSuite AutoType Resized.png

Okay, so visual problems aside... I can't get this to work. I press F1 and it makes SnapSuite disappear for a split second and then it comes back, but no text is pasted anywhere. I can see that it takes practice, so I figure I'll try clicking the button and clicking in this text box where I'm typing this right now to you. You can see from my screenshots what it should be typing. I'll do it right now:

And.. nothing happens. Actually the first time I did it, it locked up my computer for about 45 seconds. No mouse, no keyboard, no response.

Hi! I'm back. Back from where you might ask? A total system meltdown. After I had finished telling typing out that the AutoType stuff wasn't working, I noticed a giant button at the bottom that says "Clear/Hide your instant message history..."

I clicked it. I noticed an AHK script show up in my tray that said IM history will be cleared in 5 seconds. I clicked back here in anticipation and waited. Then this happened:

What the heck just happened?

It wrote all that stuff in here. "That was odd," I thought. Then suddenly 5 more AHK icons showed up in my tray. Each one saying IM will be cleared in 5 seconds.

OH SMURF!
(Blue because Smurfs are blue)

I rushed my mouse over to try to close them out but was not fast enough. Suddenly everything on my desktop started opening up.  A million zillion Windows Explorers opened up, and every couple of seconds another 5 or 8 or 10 AHK icons popped up in the tray again, repeating the process indefinitely. There was nothing I could do but hit the reset button.

And that, my friend, is where I'm going to have to end this little review. I'm afraid of what might happen if I continue to use SnapSuite. I'm fortunate I didn't have any unsaved documents open at the time of that total meltdown. I'm especially dreadful of what could happen in the SystemCare tab.

EDIT:

Okay, I felt it a little unfair to end there after all. While I was flipping through the tabs to see if the Help button did anything in any tab (it doesn't) I noticed some very cool stuff in your Support and About tabs.

Support:

I like how you've used the built in browser (SmartBrowse?) to display the FAQ, SnapSuite Website, etc. What I think is especially cool is how you've got this very thread  (and it always goes to the latest post) as one of the Support Tabs. Very good idea!

SnapSuite Support Website.png

SnapSuite Support Forum.png

Very cool!

About:

Pretty much the same thing here. It was a good idea to include info about SnapSuite being a part of the NANY 2008 Coding Challenge (but the image you're using shows a picture of Cody sleeping on Jan 01, 2007)

SnapSuite About.png

Then also a cool idea is to once again use the built in browser to show off DonationCoder.com and even the lovable (though currently migrated for Winter) WTFCody.com

That's a nice touch!
