Thanks for the encouragement -- making the newsletters takes some time and effort and it's always nice to hear that it's appreciated.

I want to have the ability to disconnect ImgFloat from SSC for periods of time, i.e. freeze the image.  Imagine that you get something for reference, and you want to keep browsing based on that and taking screenshots while keeping your reference up.

Since enough people seem to like this feature idea, it might warrant me putting a specific post-capture toggleable menu item in the tray menu for this.

So essential to post-capture i would have a dedicated item for specifying a post-capture "float" commandline tool, and a checkbox to enable or disable it.  Then users could enable and disable the post-capture use of that tool.

--

On the other side of the coin -- if one takes the standpoint that ImgFloat might be desirable as a more generic non-sc tool, there might be some value in having it handle such options..

I've already told wraith that if this tool becomes popular i will inevitably learn from (aka steal) all of it's ideas and built the feature into SC itself.  :-\

General Software Discussion / Re: Special Security Software Just for Women?

Anti-mailware for women, however, explores the problem, discusses your feelings about how this problem affects you, and works with you towards a solution that will reaffirm your womanhood while letting you look stylish and fashion-forward while doing it.

i know i shouldn't have laughed, but i couldn't help myself.  :P

however, in fairness, i think your description of anti-malware for men might be more accurately described thusly:

"Anti-malware for men:  $25 for basic anti-malware, but for only $200 extra you can get path-programmable lasers; or an extra $25 on top of that for extra power lasers.  Add another $50 for extreme-effect audible alerts.  Or buy the Master-Defender Elite Lifetime Edition for only $500."

I treat any deal (whether it's cable company, software subscription service, website hosting service) that offers an "introductory" cheap price for the first year and then after that goes back up to normal (or frequently higher!), as something to steer wide clear from, unless I am already resigned to paying the full price for the long haul.

Super-sized Newsletter for Dec 10, 2013
"Codename: Lucky Fourteen"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings and welcome to a super-sized edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter, featuring some of the most interesting posts on the forum in the last three months, divided into fourteen bite-sized sections.

I do have a handful of topics I want to touch on briefly in this newsletter editorial.

Firstly, and most importantly, I want to encourage you to get involved in our NANY (New Apps for the New Year) 2014 event, where we encourage coders who are friends of the site to try to code and release something new.  The deadline to submit something is January 1st, and the event is open to the public, young and old, amateur or pro.  There are no winners or losers and everyone who participates gets a free coffee mug commemorating the event.  Even if you're not a coder, stop by and cheer on the participants -- many of whom are first-time coders.

Secondly, we've finally gotten around to updating our new list of our favorite websites (see section 8 below).  Hopefully you'll discover something new there and share with us your opinion about sites we should add to the list.

Thirdly, you'll see in sections 3 & 4 below that DC member Skwire and I have been in an unspoken competition to update our software applications -- resulting in a ton of updates in the last few months.  So, if you're a user of one of our applications there's a good chance it's been updated recently.

And lastly, please consider making a small donation to help with the extra costs we incur at the end of each year in sending out our NANY event mugs.

And now on to the newsletter!
-jesse (mouser)

2. NANY 2014: New Apps for the New Year

With only 3 weeks left before the deadline for our NANY 2014 event, the progress report posts are starting to pile up in the NANY section.  Here's just a small collection of them:

3. Mouser's Software Updates

I've uploaded some updates to many of my large applications since the last newsletter.  As always, you can find the list of what's new both in the online help pages (linked from each program homepage) or in the forum thread about the application (also linked from each program homepage).

4. Skwire Empire Software Updates

DC member skwire is one of the more prolific coders of utilities on our site -- he roams the coding snack request section and pounces like a jaguar when he finds something that catches his eye.  He's released a ton of updates to his software since the last newsletter, including some updates to his most popular tools:

5. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

6. Coding Snacks, and other Member Projects

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use.  If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

7. Mini-reviews, Discounts, and Found Deals

Members share their reviews of software with one another on the forum.

8. Website Discoveries, Debates, Essays, Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...  And be sure to check out our new list of our "Favorite" websites.

9. Software Discussions

Some noteworthy software discussion on the forum since the last newsletter.

10. Entertainment and Humour

Here's a collection of some diversionary web browsing links posted on the forum recently.

11. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

12. Encryption and Security News

There were so many encryption and security-related posts on the forum in the last month that we have a section of the newsletter devoted to the issue.

13. Hardware Hangout

We've started to see more hardware discussions on the forum in the last year or two.  Hopefully the trend will continue -- we'd love to hear about more DIY projects from readers.

14. Linux and Non-Windows Stuff

We've got a new section in this newsletter -- to match a brand new section of our forum devoted to linux and other non-windows platforms.

Hope you enjoyed the latest edition of the newsletter -- see you in January!

The culprit earlier was likely something else I had running at the same time. Will post back if it happens again.

makes sense -- probably something fighting with minicap for foreground focus.

Yeah, "Save As" is a very different beast -- not so much on purpose but because of how SC is set up.  When you do a Save As you are saving outside of the SC directory and so the image does not get automatically loaded into the UI, and is not available for all the post-processing stuff.

It's confusing i admit it.

I may try to change the requirement that the directory of the currently loaded file and the current screenshot directory be the same.  This would also solve the issue where people want to use SC to open arbitrary files without changing the screenshot directory.  The main impediment is not so much doing this as it is figuring out a sensible way to modify the UI so that working with files outside of the main screenshot directory makes sense.   This is probably best discussed on a separate thread..

But Save as is totally different.  No balloon tip.  No post-capture options.

Do you mean "Save As"?

General Software Discussion / Re: myWOT uninstall

Wouldn't it just be a matter of using JavaScript to interrogate for the three hash values that are left behind in the browser config?

surely a website is not allowed to run javascript that can go reading your arbitrary firefox browser configuration settings.

General Software Discussion / Re: myWOT uninstall nightmare (and it's crapware)
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2013, 11:54 PM »
agreed, if the leftover information is enough to actually IDENTIFY you, and it's somehow doing that not using the normal way (cookies).. well i can't think of any justification for that -- and if it was done on purpose, and is actively being USED to identify people? that's NOT ok and needs to be called out in a serious way, and we should expect some answers.

i mean every site on the planet now tracks users with cookies.. and i don't quite understand how a site is identifying a WOT user without a plugin and without using cookies.

can someone explain that to me?

i'd just like to see some more evidence or explanation about that before i make up my mind..

I don't personally use WOT, but i know a little bit about it and i think we have people on DC who really like it.

Reading the criticisms of WOT on the links posted in this thread, there seem to be 3 very different complaints:

1. That uninstalling WOT doesn't really fully uninstall it.
2. That WOT can be "gamed" to harm site reputations.
3. That WOT forum is censoring posts critical of it.
4. That WOT is useless because its "just" using user's opinions to judge sites instead of scanning for viruses, etc.

As for #1, there are lots of cases where uninstalling leaves behind trivial stuff that is not used for any purpose -- sometimes just because deleting it seems pointless, or because a reinstall should preserve the settings, etc.  Sometimes people freak out about such things.  I think in order to be upset or care, you'd really want to show that WOT is using this left over undeleted information for nefarious purposes.  I'm not saying someone shouldn't document how to clear this information or that i know whether or not it's being used, i'm just saying that just because info is left over after an uninstall is not in itself reason to freak out.

As for #2, i do think WOT can be gamed, and probably *is* being gamed -- though not nearly as much as most of the damn internet services we use every day.  every major successfull (and trying to be successful) internet service is gamed to high heaven, both from inside the company -- to fakely inflate the apparent popularity, and by external people who pay to have fake accounts and content and upvotes and likes, etc.  It's the nature of our current system that such gaming takes place and has become a solid business model.  it sucks.  It's fair to complain when companies encourage this or don't do much about it.  I don't know enough about WOT to judge them on this.

As for #3, i don't approve of removing critical forum posts, if they are doing that, shame on them.  but it does seem to be VERY common in the industry.

As for #4, i think that's a silly complaint -- using user reputations gives you a very different way to judge a site's evilness, and can frequently be more useful and intelligent and mindful than some automated virus scanning, which frequently makes mistakes and can be hell to get fixed since humans are not involved.

Just my 2 cents -- i think we should be a little more cautious about hating on WOT until someone comes up with some more solid reasons to do so.

I've uploaded a new version (1.39.02) with a minor fix for full screen window detection that may have been suboptimal on windows 7 (it may have thought a maximized window was a full screen window in some cases).

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Licence key
« Last post by mouser on December 06, 2013, 01:56 PM »
Something must have gone wrong -- a common problem is that there are different free license keys for the different programs and people sometimes download the wrong one without noticing.

I have concluded that using labels on cds/dvds is counter productive -- they delaminate over time, as others have pointed out, and can cause problems.

Printing jewelcase inserts is a different matter of course.

Skwire Empire / Re: Trout Request: Automatic playlist creation
« Last post by mouser on December 05, 2013, 07:58 PM »
truthfully i use folders myself.. the only reason i even use playlists is so i have an easier way to remember previous folders loaded.  perhaps a Recent Folders list in the file menu (clicking would do a clear and load) would be even better.

Skwire Empire / Re: Trout Request: Automatic playlist creation

One way this might be even more useful, is if trout had a "Recent Playlists" function and this added it to that, so one could more easily select previous playlists.

Skwire Empire / Trout Request: Automatic playlist creation
« Last post by mouser on December 05, 2013, 10:21 AM »
It might be nice to have an option that will automatically create+save a playlist file whenever i use Add Folder menu item.

What I mean is, whenever i have a new folder of mp3 files, i always do a two-step process.

First I use File -> Clear and Add Folder item to load the full folder of files.

Then step 2, i go to the file menu and SAVE a playlist to my playlist folder so i can easily reload this set of files.

So i'm suggesting it might be nice to have step 2 done automatically, naming the playlist based on the folder name, and saving it in my last playlist file location.

Not a big deal, just an idea.
