Official Announcements / Re: DC Server Accessibility Problem - April 24th 2008

I'm not sure if this is related, since DonationCoder has been working fine for me, but YouTube is loading awfully slow for me today.

Too bad April fools has passed, but nonetheless, I know some people that are totally oblivious to dialog boxes...

Skrommel has already made a small coding snack called IdleRun that I think will do what you want. I haven't used it myself, but the description says you can place it in your startup folder to find out when your computer has finished loading.

Pretty cute... but... what's the point?

New Version:
v1.03
4/19/2008

  • Ammunition has been reorganized to make it less easy to get the most powerful weapon right away.
  • Some retexturing has been done.
  • Unused portions of the map which were outside of the "arena" boundaries have been removed.
  • Subtle lens flares have been added to help you know where to aim to kill the snipers behind one-way-walls.
  • Lighting!
    • The chosen skybox is a nighttime scene, so the entire map is a little darker. Blue and Red Bases, however, glow with color to highlight their entrances and pathways.
    • The lighting probably needs more work, but it should be very playable at this point.

Download the latest version using DC Updater or from the original post.

I nominate myself for this award today.

I managed to plug (accidentally) a switch (network hub) into two different wall sockets and took out a building. You really wouldn't think it was that easy....
-mediaguycouk (April 18, 2008, 04:27 PM)

I didn't even know that was possible! All the outlets I've seen here in the USA are spaced in such a way that it would be very difficult to accidentally plug something in to two sockets.

I was taught in school that you determine whether or not to use "an" or "a" depending on how the beginning of the next word sounds. If the beginning of the word after "a/an" has a vowel sound, then you use "an" but if it has a consonant sound, you use "a." For example, "an idiot," or "a moron."

It also depends on how the vowel sounds. For example:

an umbrella
a unified theory
-Carol Haynes (April 18, 2008, 06:02 AM)

Yes that's exactly what I said. Or at least exactly what I meant. :)

If the beginning of the word after "a/an" has a vowel sound, then you use "an" ...
(emphasis added)

I think those two tend to contradict each other at times depending on your accent - trying to say a 'istory is a challenge.
Then, is it an html editor or a html.. - for me it's "a" but I pronounce the "H" there a lot more than your average American/Canadian for example
... but I suppose rules are okay for writing

I did specifically mention dialects of English that don't pronounce the letter H at the beginning of words. I would say "An HTML editor." Sure, you say the letter "H" but it starts with the sound of the letter "A."

I think the "rule" can be summed up with something along these lines: You don't want two vowel sounds right after each other. It breaks the fluency (flow) of speech as you have to make a distinct pause in your words to differentiate the ending of the word and the beginning of the next.

Yet the rules of the English language are so complex that there are always special cases where they don't apply, so I'm sure someone would be able to point out a flaw somewhere along here.

For some reason I wasn't expecting it to shut off my extended desktop when I clicked the exe to create the ini and shortcut. I wasn't too happy with all my windows moving over to my 1 desktop and having it shut off. Although that's exactly what would have happened anyway when I tested it, I just wasn't too happy for it to happen by default to "install" the shortcut and everything.

It's hard to describe. I'm complaining about something happening that I was going to do anyway, but the reason I didn't like it was because it happened before I felt like I "gave it permission" to happen.

But I have to say it worked flawlessly.

It's definitely more eye catching, but unfortunately not in a pleasant way.

While working on my DC sig, I fiddled around with one of my banners for SnapSuite. It came out quite nice. Might add it to the top of the website, not sure yet.

I basically took an existing image I had done and added it ontop of itself and positioned the various layers accordingly. The result:

Living Room / Re: RAPIDSHARE.COM sucks!
« Last post by Deozaan on April 17, 2008, 09:16 PM »
I don't think you got the right to complain. since you're using their service for FREE. Consider it a TRIAL version.

We don't see posts like "dopus sucks because the trial works only for 60 days" or "total commander sucks since the trial version has a nag screen", do we?

I don't think this is a good analogy because we do say a trial sucks if it is crippleware, or if they make it very difficult to use the trial version just because you haven't bought the full version yet. The purpose of a trial is to get you to want to buy the product. Not to make you despise it so much you'll never touch anything made by the company again just out of principle.

Imagine if trial software made you type in a nearly impossible to decipher sequence of digits and letters before you could even access any of the features.

Also keep in mind that people who write software actually perform work to try and make a living. The people who run RapidShare are merely providing bandwidth for others to upload and download what is usually pirated data.

Scancode already said in the original post that he doesn't mind waiting a few hours before being able to download more, and that he clearly understands they're trying to get him to purchase a membership. I think someone with that amount of patience should not be rebuked for complaining about difficult to use systems. Nor do you have the authority to enforce your claim that he has no right to complain. I don't know what part of the world you live in, but from the sounds of it, I would hate to even visit it. I value the freedom of speech, even if I don't agree with what is being said.

Cool!

A hero - an hero is one of the evil internet memes.

Thanks to you and tomos!
I know my English is rudimentary, so I appreciate corrections / explanations!

Sometimes it is appropriate to use an instead of a for words that start with an H. I don't really understand all the rules myself, and I think it stems from British (and other European) dialects of English that don't pronounce the H at the beginning of words.

I was taught in school that you determine whether or not to use "an" or "a" depending on how the beginning of the next word sounds. If the beginning of the word after "a/an" has a vowel sound, then you use "an" but if it has a consonant sound, you use "a." For example, "an idiot," or "a moron."

But for some reason the rule is fidgety with when a word starts with "H." I've heard it properly said "an human" or "an history" but I was never instructed to pronounce it that way and it just doesn't sound right to me.

Ah! Good point, cranioscopical. Amidst all the translating/converting taking place (petrol, pounds, litres, euros, etc.) I forgot to think of the difference between liters and gallons.

Silly Brits! Measuring things in a way that makes sense!  :P
8395
Looks useful.

If I may make a suggestion: Use mouser's ScreenShot Captor to take the screens of the program. It has some neat tools built in to let you blur out areas you don't want others to see and add annotations, etc., and it would make it seem a lot more professional than the current screens, which look like you used Paint to cross out the serials. I also suggest taking a couple minutes to type out more information about it here in the original post. Give people an incentive to click your link.

Because it's version 0.01 I'm curious about it's stability and also what sort of format it stores the information in. For something as important as registration codes, you would need to be able to guarantee me that I could get my data if for some reason the program stopped working or was no longer developed or something similar.

Living Room / Re: British money is about to get really cool

Personally I don't want to see pennies go as it will just hike prices again for no good reason and us Brits are already ripped off. Yesterday I drove past a petrol station (gas station to N. Americans) and diesel is now £1.20 per litre (~ $2.36US, $2.40 CAD or 1.49 EUR).
-Carol Haynes (April 15, 2008, 07:33 PM)

I know Brits usually suffer much more expensive prices, but that's actually a really good price for fuel compared to my area. Gasoline here is about $3.20 and diesel is above $4.

It's cool what they're doing, but I actually don't like the design that much.

I think app103 phrased it more appropriately (in IRC) by calling it organized chaos. It's not to say that having everything be a total mess is beneficial. But if you have some clutter around the house it's probably not as bad as many so-called "neat freaks" might lead you to believe.

New Version:
v1.02
4/14/2008

  • Fall-through lava death traps have been made smaller because people seemed unable to remember to avoid them.
    • Remember folks, yellow stripes mean caution.
  • Another common cause of death was that snipers would jump off the sniper balconies into the lava death traps. Yellow stripe textures have now been added to sniper ledges where jumping off may result in a fiery death.
  • Reduced Chain gun ammo availability in starting bases.
  • Added a quick escape from the Permanent Health Boost lava obstacle course. If you made it that far you deserve an easy way out.
  • Added teleports back into the arena in the chance someone manages to legitimately get stuck outside.
  • Various retexturing done to help add clarity and visibility to what is where.
  • Just for mouser: Added an extra sniping position in each base using the cheapest of cheaps: One-way walls. Interestingly enough, the only weapons that actually travel through the one-way walls (if you're in the right position) are the Rocket Launcher and the Sniper Crossbow.
  • Added a couple more spawn points.
  • Removed the Super Mario Bros. techno remix from the custom song list. I like the song but it was getting annoying on the map. This means that the FULL Download has been updated to this version, since the song is no longer a necessary part of the download.

Be sure to carefully read the download instructions in the original post.

DC Gamer Club / Re: DonationCoder map - Sauerbraten FPS fun
« Last post by Deozaan on April 15, 2008, 12:40 AM »
I have received multiple reports that people (not from DC) are taking over the server and blocking DC members from accessing it. Because this happens when I am not on the server (I am an administrator when I am online) Deozaan suggested that I hand out the server password to some (trustworthy) people that join the server more often (or when I am away, etc).
-wreckedcarzz (April 14, 2008, 06:59 PM)

I'd also like to add in that I popped in today as admin and talked to a few of the people there who had locked us out. They had it locked because they were working on a map and people were coming in and messing with it. (And it was actually a pretty cool looking map!)

I let them know that the server is intended for use by DonationCoder members, gave them the names of a few of the "regular" DC Sauerbraten members, and told them to please let DC Members join and play. I suggested that if they have problems with people coming in and destroying their map that they restrict joiners as spectators, and if the new joiners are DC Members, that they respectfully save their map and let us play. They agreed and were very polite about it.

So what I'm getting at here is that I don't think any harm was intended. There are probably some meanies out there playing Sauerbraten but most of the time politely asking will do the trick.
