Developer's Corner / Re: Software Licensing
« Last post by Renegade on February 12, 2011, 11:21 PM »
:D

What's so special about MPL that i see many softwares are adding it to their license model these days ?

It's similar to BSD or Ms-PL. It makes the component/library usable in closed-source or proprietary software.

^Disagree on the books side of the equation. I like to really carefully look over a book before I buy it.  Especially some of those $50+ paperbacks we computer people are so fond of. Customer reviews and sample pages (a la Amazon) are ok, but nothing equals spending 20 or 30 minutes over a coffee while carefully perusing two competing book titles before making your purchase decision.

Guess that's going to go the way of the dodo too.  >:(

You remind me of once when I was in a bookstore here in Melbourne with my wife. I just about had a heart attack at the nutty prices - 2x and 3x the USD price printed on the back. I commented to my wife, "Bookstores are for looking at books. Online is where to buy them."

Computer books were expensive in Seoul, but nothing like they are here.

Like you say, $50+. One book I bought a number of years ago was $130 on sale. Checking now the list is $170 and you can get it for $100. I hate to imagine what it would cost here. $200? $300? $400?

One of my favorite things when I was a kid was ordering books at school. We'd get a list of books that we could buy. When they finally came, it was uber-joy~! :D I remember one of the books, "Who is Bugs Potter?" It was such a joy to read. It was about a kid that wanted to be a drummer. Band names in the book included "Nuclear Tea Pot". I think the publisher was "Apple Paperbacks". Other favorites were the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series.

When it comes to ebooks, I print them out and bind them. I'd posted a bit on that here in this thread.

I suppose it would make sense for someone to sell a "do it yourself book binding kit" as I can see that becoming more popular as people switch to buying digitally, but prefer reading physical print.

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple Photo Resizer - Please Give Feedback
« Last post by Renegade on February 12, 2011, 07:26 PM »
One of the "inspirations/motivations" for it is someone I know and who shall remain unnamed -- Asking him to rename a file is a major task. Watching him browse to a different location on his computer is enough to make you want to rip your eye-balls out and scream. While seeing Cthulhu may give you a few insanity points, he'll max you out real quit as you find yourself screaming wildly and attempting to bash your brains out in a padded cell. :D

I've not given him a link for it yet, but he'll be the acid test to see if I've managed to get the UI right. :D

Having such person is a big +. It is too bad that each person can only by used once for such tests.

Anyway, what I wanted to emphasize in my previous post is that you should pick an area and make your picture resizer be totally awesome in that single area. The area may be for example ease of use, resizing speed, image quality, user interface sexiness, understandable documentation, portability, seamless integration with another software, or something completely different. I followed that path years ago and it worked. There is a good number of free picture resizers out there competing for attention (some of them even online services), and being best in something is a must.

Good advice!

I recently re-examined my approach to software and thought that going the simple route is what people really need most of the time. So that's where I'm going to be focusing. Drop dead simple. Super Simple. :)

At the moment I'm working on the web site for it. I'll be adding more there, but for the moment, it will just be this program.

I think I'm also going to try to do an online version as well. We'll see. I'm planning on using Silverlight because it's simply the best technology out there for clientside power. It also looks like it has over 62% market pentration now:

http://www.statowl.c...rket_penetration.php

And an interesting blog post on Silverlight:

http://www.uxpassion...ration-market-share/

As for the number of resizers, yeah... Tons of them. I'm not going to try to have the "best" one -- only the most usable and easiest one.

Well, back to the website work. It's getting there slowly... The biggest issue isn't "getting the site done", but rather getting the site and software done in a way that will put food on the table. There's a very big difference there. :)

Maybe I'll do something a bit more exotic next year. DC thong or something.

Perhaps by then there'll also be wine and women.

The thong has instructions? "Enter free license here."

I tried the beta and it was horrible. I had to uninstall it.  :-\

I'll wait for a bit then see what people have to say.

Horrible in what way?

As in everything I needed to do in it didn't work. It was a while ago and I forget the specifics. I just remember that I had to get rid of it as it just didn't work properly to the degree that I couldn't get work done.

http://online.wsj.co..._hpp_LEFTTopWhatNews

Borders Group Inc. is in the final stages of preparing a bankruptcy filing, clinching a long fall for a company with humble beginnings that helped change the way Americans buy books but failed to keep pace with the digital transformation rocking every corner of the media landscape.

I'm kind of ambivalent. On one hand, I feel sorry for them, and on the other, I feel that it's their own fault for not embracing ebooks earlier.

ok people let's see some more mug photos!

Still waiting for it to come in the mail.

It should only be a few more days.

I'm getting close to throwing in the towel on Firefox and switching to Chrome.

I use IE for all my most important stuff that matters.

FF is my workhorse for 99%.

Chrome is my secondary information holder.

Opera is my tertiary.

But FF just isn't stable enough. I think I'll try the upgrade soon, but if it crashes as often as it does now, I'm moving to Chrome for my workhorse browser.

Chrome is finally at that stage where it's good enough to use... I think... Haven't tried anything important in it, but... seems ok for now.

Another reason why Google wants you to switch --- HP announced webOS for the desktop is coming...

Can't you simply unlock your player - I have managed to do that with every player I have owned.

Too lazy. For my Mac... God... I can't imagine the nightmare...

I looked into it, but everything I found had too many warnings, and I just shied away.

If I knew of a RELIABLE way to do it, sure. But I don't have that many to unlock, and don't feel like spending money to replace them if they get screwed. And I would simply hate to have to fart around with spending time getting a new one. Pain then pain. It takes like a week minimum to get anything done here. (I really miss Korea sometimes.)

Any hints on reliable methods?

Developer's Corner / Software Licensing
« Last post by Renegade on February 11, 2011, 09:04 AM »
I'm doing a fair bit of web work right now, and ended back up at the CKEditor site, where I checked the license:

CKEditor is distributed under the GPL, LGPL and MPL open source licenses. This triple copyleft licensing model avoids incompatibility with other open source licenses. These Open Source licenses are specially indicated for:

    * Integrating CKEditor into Open Source software;
    * Personal and educational use of CKEditor;
    * Integrating CKEditor in commercial software, taking care of satisfying the Open Source licenses terms, while not able or interested on supporting CKEditor and its development.

Hahahaha~! I like how they put that there. Very nice.

jab jab

In any event, it's a kick ass RTE.

(Very not happy at my Star Wars DVDs not being playable...)

Wait...you're in Australia aren't you?  One of the few countries where it's legal, (or I should probably say: 'not illegal'), to have/sell region free DVD players and you've got a region locked player?

Yes.

I *was* using my Mac for DVDs... Apple doesn't seem to have the brains to include a region free optical drive... Go figure.

I only watch on my computer monitors, and not the TV. It's packed away somewhere as we never use it. I'm not sure if my (regular) DVD player is region free or not. I bought that in Malaysia.

My DVD burner has regions on it. Not sure about the Blu-ray as I only ever use that for burning backups. Probably has region destruction coding though.

I fail to understand how it could be illegal to sell a region free DVD player anywhere. I can see the patents only being licensed to people with agreements, but after that, who's to stop anyone from buying parts or selling them in different regions. But those would be civil agreements, and not in criminal law.

Anyways -- region free = good. Good = me happy. Me happy = post at DC~! :P :D

I just got my DVD of "The Corporation" in the mail. I quickly opened the package, then checked the back for the region... ALL. Hahah~! They get it. They make the DVD playable for any DVD player. They're not the total douches that the rest of the industry seems to be.

It was just nice to see. I'm sick of spending money on products that are designed to be broken. :( (Very not happy at my Star Wars DVDs not being playable...)

Developer's Corner / Re: How did WordPress win?
« Last post by Renegade on February 10, 2011, 07:47 PM »
That was an excellent article. Thanks for posting it.

Regarding OSS as cutthroat, sigh... The thing about OSS is that it's only a software licensing model, and not a business model in the exact same way that the way I license my non-OSS software is only a license, and not a business model. There are many successful businesses out there that run off of GPL of otherwise OSS software. DotNetNuke has a BSD-ish license but still runs a very successful business.

People think that you need to sell a product to have a business, but that's just not true, now more than ever. Services and content are the big things now. Products are increasingly becoming commodities while branding becomes increasingly important. Why use X over Y? Because I know X and trust it. I don't know Y from Z or whatever, so it's out of the question.

WordPress won the mindshare battle, as he details in the article.

The part about Perl wasn't a surprise though. "Perl, the only language that looks the same before and after RSA encryption." While a joke, it's not far from the truth. PHP is the lowest common denominator language out there. It's relatively easy to learn and use and it's free. The barrier to entry is about as low as you get.

Edit: On the flipside, the applications you guys are listing here are a lot better than the ones you guy say you are often using in one of the other DonationCoder software listing threads. Focus groups...err...forum threads truly don't work.

It all really depends on what you want to get done. Editplus, Visual Studio, and Photoshop are my main workhorses. I just opened up an Illustrator instance as I need to do some basic logo design, or attempt it anyways. A lot of things you simply can't reasonably do in some software. MS Paint is much better than it used to be, but it's painful to work in. It's also about what you're used to. I suppose if I were used to the GIMP, I'd use it, but I'm used to Photoshop.

I generally just try to use whatever tool will let me get the job done easiest/best.

I think I may have this DAD thing down to a fine art...what I have open on my taskbar right now:

  • 26 Browser Tabs (Opera)
  • 2 Instances of Visual C#
  • Skype
  • MSN (2 Conversations)
  • XCHAT (IRC)
  • Windows Media Player
  • TeamViewer
  • Calculator
  • 48 Open Folders
  • 16 Notepad Files
  • 21 Tabs in Notepad++
  • MSPaint
  • GIMP
  • Photoshop CS3 Extended
  • MAXON Cinema 4D
  • iClone 4

And in my System Tray

  • Dropbox
  • Wakoopa
  • Ares
  • Steam
  • Pidgin IM
  • Llama Tray
  • Treat Yourself Nicely
  • DoCo Quick Links

Hahaha~! I'm sure our desktops look very similar.

By Group:
Internet Explorer (3)
Visual Studio (5)
Remote Desktop (1)
Outlook
Folders (16)
EditPlus (11 instances -- Too many tabs to count... in each one...)
Free Commander (3 folders open)
Skype (3 chats)
InnoIDE (1)
VLC (1)
Filezilla (2 sites open)
Task Manager (1)
VMware Workstation (1 OS open)
SQL Server Configuration Manager (1)
Photoshop (2 images open)
Chrome (3 instances - 11, 4, 2 tabs)
Topstyle (1)
Firefox (1 instance - 98 tabs)
Control Panel applets (3 open)
IrfanView (1)
IIS Manager (1)
Computer Manager (1)
Word (4)
Excel (1)
Photo Resizer (1)
Bulk Rename Utility (1)
Calc (1)
Dreamweaver (1)

Then there's the tray, but I'm getting distracted, so I'm not going to bother listing that stuff. :)

All in all, that's not too bad for me. I generally have more going on. That only covers 1 and a bit rows of my task bar. I've been trying to keep the number of open applications and tabs limited lately, and trying to close things I don't need (hence the only 16 folders open).

I've been managing Firefox better by closing usually 30~50 tabs at a time few times a day. That and it always crashes on me, which helps to start fresh. Tab #1 is always DC~! :D

A doctor diagnosed me with ADHD. I asked how badly, and he said that I went off the charts. Meh... Whatever. I suppose DAD will just help a few people to figure out a bit what it's like to be me~! :P

Developer's Corner / Re: DNS Propogation Checkers to Check DNS Propogation Status
« Last post by Renegade on February 09, 2011, 07:11 AM »
That would be very handy. I typically have overlap in those scenarios. Just because DNS has propagated in one area, doesn't mean it has in another, so geographic differences really can be deceiving.

A quick & dirty way to check is to use a Spyglass from one of the major bandwidth providers like Level3 (they have an excellent spyglass).

Come to think of it, that would be a simple way to wrap up a DNS checker...

Thanks for pointing it out.

All the DNN modules that I looked at were really sucky. Just plain bad.

General Software Discussion / Re: Should MS open up Windows Update to 3rd parties?
« Last post by Renegade on February 08, 2011, 03:15 AM »
Renegade: the whole point would be getting rid of all those FSCKING LAME "so ein ding mussen ich auch haben" 3rd-party auto-update tools, and have one centralized & stream-lined process to handle all updates. It would be very++ nice for the end-users.

No disagreement there. I just can't see MS doing it. The risk is simply too high.

It would be a major initiative to verify vendors, and would be costly for them. Who would opt in? Not sure.

It would be nice to see better updates though.

General Software Discussion / Re: Should MS open up Windows Update to 3rd parties?
« Last post by Renegade on February 08, 2011, 02:47 AM »
The single biggest barrier is one of trust. How well do you trust the 3rd party not to do something evil? And how much responsibility do you want to take for distributing something you didn't write yourself?

+1

It would be just nutty for MS to allow other ISVs. Autoupdate viruses? Hmmm... too risky.

There are enough autoupdater components out there already, so there's no need for Windows update to be used by anyone except MS.
