Although, I do need to patch mine a bit. People can get creative when they are under time pressure about exactly HOW they make it to the finish... :)

Heh. "Creative." That's a very nice way of saying I'm always looking for shortcuts.

That's another complaint/rant. The good news is I just got BugMeNot working again.

Interesting article.

I'd just like to take a moment and rant: I hate sites like this that make you click every single comment you want to read. Why not just show them all? Or show 50 at a time or something?

Oh is that all it is? I thought it was those electronic ones with screens for lenses that cost $300.

Ooh, 3 levels :cringe:

No that's only 2 levels. The tray icons are just small enough to fit 3 in that same space.

Not sure. My task bar shows the date just fine when it's 2 levels high.

I'm one of those typical addicts in denial: I could do it if I wanted to. But I don't want to, so I'm not going to.  :P

I never ran into the problem before that I can remember on this particular machine, but just to see if it improved performance I changed it to 8096 or whatever amount he said was working fine for him in the article.

I haven't noticed any difference though.

12288 sounds more than brave to me!  :tellme:

I admit my ignorance in exactly what this is used for, but I don't understand why that sounds brave. That's just 12MB. I have ~2,000MB RAM on this machine. Most people these days have at least 512MB if not 1GB of RAM.

On my system, Firefox often takes up around 150MB by itself. So that's why I think 12MB is nothing.

Anyway, I think I made the point once that everyone should use stuff like TOR - not because they have anything to hide but because you never know when something innocuous will suddenly become somthing to hide, and because the mass of users adds to the anonymity of the system

What is TOR?

Maybe IE had a cached CSS file?

Everything I ever learned about CSS & XHTML (which I've all forgotten since it's been ages since I did any web design) I learned from http://www.w3.org/

Thanks guys for the helful and positive comments.

If I make the sheep active as a link it ends up with a box round it - anyone any idea how to remove that in CSS or Dreamweaver? I looked everywhere fort he option but couldn't find it. Tickling the sheep was my original intention!
-Carol Haynes (April 25, 2008, 07:17 PM)

I'm not sure on the exact CSS method, but in the <img> tags you can add (for example) <img src=sheep.jpg border=0> to get rid of the box. My example isn't xhtml compliant, but I think you could just add a border=0 to the CSS for img tags.

My natural inclination was to click on the sheep, though; so I'd make the sheep a button too. I'm always slightly irritated by having to look for the enter button. In practice,I prefer having the menus available on the first screen, but that may just be me.

I had to scroll down to see the "Click here to enter" link, which I think should be a big "no no" for a website. Just to give you an idea of how "bad" this is: My resolution is 1280x1024. My browser window isn't maximized, but it takes up most of the screen. Dormouse's suggestion would help, but I think you need the "Click to enter" somewhere up higher so people can see it and know what to do.

So, what programs make you sigh when you sit down at someone else's computer?

Pretty much any bundle-in browser toolbar (Yahoo!, Google, etc).

Pretty much anything Yahoo! for that matter.

McAfee Antivirus.

I used to really hate RealPlayer and QuickTime but it's been a really long time since I've used them or seen them so maybe they've changed.

Any sort of software that comes with a digital camera, like Kodak EasyShare software for photo albums and things.

iTunes.

And last but not least: OSX  :P

EDIT: This one is kind of the opposite of your question. Things that annoy me when they're not on someone else's computer:

FireFox.

I was just sent an e-mail from http://TigerDirect.com saying I haven't bought enough from them recently, so to woo me back they offered me a $20 coupon if I spent more than $200. It expires May 2, and I don't plan to spend that much before then. So I'm offering it up for grabs.

If anyone plans on buying something(s) for more than $200 at TigerDirect.com, I'll send you the link to redeem the coupon.

It's a unique, one-time use coupon so I don't want to just post it for anyone to use.

Maybe software authors should start informing users about McAfee's clumsiness using a nice dialog box displayed right at the install phase. Mention that you're not the only developers affected & even urge users to change their AV to something more reliable. I'm sure if enough authors do this it's bound to get them off their asses. Hit right back if the bastards don't listen!

Sorry if I seem like a pessimist, but I'm still convinced that ignorance is the main problem here. I'm not sure how effective this would be, because everybody I know who uses McAfee AV also fits into the same category of people who don't know much about computers and just look for whatever button they can press to make those pesky dialog boxes go away. Along the same lines, I think they also just click Next -> Next -> Next -> Finish when installing things. I don't think they read it anything. That's how they end up with Google Dekstop/Toolbar or all that Yapoo! crap that's bundled in.
