Living Room / Re: Science Fiction and Fantasy Reading List

A bit OT:
I just saw the greatest thing I've ever seen, courtesy of that article.  I've seen it over and over in the form of
entitlement- people expecting George R. R. Martin to devote his entire life to finishing the series.  Apparently Neil Gaiman received an e-mail in regards to this whole issue, and his response is priceless!

He had one blurb that I loved:
Spoiler
George R. R. Martin is not your bitch

Classic!

Until I see something I really want to purchase, I am not giving them anything of mine.

I do see (and admire) your point. Lacking your cool head, however, I adhere to the school of Darwin product purchasing. It's only when I see what I knew nothing of that I realize how crucial it is for me to acquire it.  :-[

Unfortunately, I'm a graduate of the school of Darwin product purchasing, also.  The only school where a degree guarantees that you'll have less money after than before.

* wraith808 shrugs.

I just get an e-mail daily that tells me what's on sale.  I've saved enough to make it more than worthwhile to me.

They require my email just to show me what's for sale? No thank you.

Eh?  You can get to the sale without logging in or giving anything.  You have to create a login to see more than today's sale, which I don't really like... but you can see what's for sale on the day without doing so.

I don't even know what "shelf tabs" are   :-[

A hold over from the regular documentation most likely.  Shelves are a feature of workshelf, which I don't believe is included with NeXuS, though I may be wrong... probably good to ask on BDJ if you're interested.

I know there was some discussions of a dock a while back, and as a user of WinStep eXtreme I recommended it.  Apparently, they have a version with just the dock, and it's on BDJ today.

Half-off at $12.50, it's a pretty good deal.  I'd definitely recommend it.

Come to think of it, dirty PETA people is a bit disgustipatingw...

You don't need to put the whole link in a wiki link - then it doesn't point to the right location.

That calls for breaking my usual non-swearing decorum: that is fucked up!  :(

Agreed.  Sometimes I hate our legal system.

It's one of the reasons I continue to rent.  Between HOAs and mortgage firms, my view on homeownership is seriously cynical.
8338
Maybe retitle the thread?  As it could create some confusion... I'll admit to being confused until I read... :)
8339
^ What I don't understand about the reply is that you do have a fully functional evaluation version.  So their excuse is ... no excuse.  And comparing to Adobe is just misdirection.  Adobe is a *much* larger company.  And Adobe doesn't allow them to, they just don't take action against them because they realize the gains are small in comparison to the hassle/loss.
8340
Or maybe to make a unique thread for this, and keep updating the first post.
8341
Just to make sure I understand about one part...
The idea is to look for reviews on other sites and post about them on review day

So post links to reviews on other sites?  I'd think it would be better to write a new review for one big reason... that the other site might go away in the future, expiring our content because of the expiry of another site.  It's the same reason in my understanding that we don't allow links to pictures.

Am I misunderstanding, or what are the thoughts on this perspective?

Oh just close it already lol
-Stephen66515 (April 21, 2011, 07:00 PM)

I might not see the LOL part in it. But I think I'm pretty much in agreement with the rest of Stephen's comment to wit: "...just close it already."

Truthfully, I'm in agreement.  There has to be a decision made, and done with.  We won't all agree... but people rarely do.  An opinion had been formed, and personally I'm ok with it; governing by committee rarely works, and by community even less.  It's nice to be consulted, but I think in a lot of cases it bogs things down unnecessarily, especially since in a lot of cases its just going through the motions because point in which there isn't a majority agreement has to in the end be decided on.  Mouser isn't the dictatorial leader even though it's his board- so I'm personally ok with just making a decision and being done with it in cases like this.  Transparency in decision making is a different thing IMO than decision by committee, so an open letter why the section was closing and then the closure would have been enough... and would be enough in the future.  Just my  :two:

Yep. :)  A lot of times when I have a problem I have to code a solution for, I check there first to see if someone else has already done it.

A good indicator - has there been a proliferation of these types of threads since it was opened?  Has it created more animosity?  I haven't noticed that it was so- there's always that element, and there's always going to be that sort of element around as long as it's not policed, but the discussion has gone on no matter where the location.  It does give more of a 'target' for such threads to consolidate them, but I don't think direct causation can be established.
8347
It is possible to ignore individual threads in the DC forum. Would it not be a good idea to be able to have an option like 'ignore forum section', so none of the threads created in that section will appear for those who do want that?

Seems the best compromise to me, giving anyone the option to ignore sections if they so desire.

Ignoring sections seems a bit along the same path as ignoring users, i.e. creating potentially parallel but non intersecting sub boards.  I rarely even ignore threads, because when you do, there's a possibility of missing something that is referenced in a different context- maybe even something enlightening or productive.
8348
$0.02 -> Keep the section (there must have been a rationale for creating it in the first place) but have some strong guidelines that people must view and adhere to before posting. No personal attacks, etc, etc. That way it's all confined to one place and people are well aware of what they should/shouldn't be doing before they post.

This seems like a good middle ground, along with re-naming it.  I think it does serve a purpose, and is a service to the members of DoCo, and visitors in it's current state.  Maybe even limit the topic creation there, so that only one thread is created per service/product?  And make it more of a discussion of companies rather than labeled complaints or compliments?

Just throwing out thoughts....

http://www.snipplr.com is the one I use.  It integrates with DoCo member mtelligent's snip-it pro also as a bonus.

IMO some of the very best and most insightful (is that a word?) posts I've ever read were here during Linux/FOSS ...um...'discussions.'

Didn't matter if the comments were for or against. Most were well considered and very well written. Learned a lot reading and participating in some of those threads. Sharpened my thinking and deepened my respect for more than one DoCo member. (Good stuff!)

This, definitely.  One of the reasons that I dove back into it a bit after I started frequenting the boards. :)
