If you've got plent of ram (in my experience at least a gigabyte, but preferably two) you can disable the paging file entirely, if you're running XP (win2k will create a temp pagefile at boot if you disable it >_<).

Go to system properties -> advanced tab -> performance <settings button> -> advanced tab -> virtual memory <change button> -> select "no paging file" and press <set button> for each partition that has a paging file. Then click all the OK buttons :), reboot, and you can delete pagefile.sys.

Humm, I'd rather use RAR self-extracting password-protected files... better compression, and I trust The Russians (TM). They're using AES as well.

Man, I love your graphical style.

Of the first two (beach) pictures, I like the second one with the smaller cody best.

In my opinion (s)he's not of a fixed size - grows with the task ahead.

But usually small and cuddly, able to sit in my hand.

2gig of ram here, XP32, disabled paging file as well. It's wonderful :). I'm glad I don't run Adobe apps though, or I'd probably still need the paging file.

Adding more ram == slowdown indeed only should happen with screwy motherboards.

4x512 vs. 2x1024 is stupid. Especially if you run AMD64 chips, some of them have buggy memory controllers which can cause system instability if you run at DDR400 speed... so if you're "full loading", you need to revert to DDR333.

Using an old drive for swap can't be recommended, it could easily end up slower than having swap on whatever drive you have all your other stuff on.

Swap will, unfortunately, be necessary a long time yet, as long as we have sloppy coders like the ones at Adobe.

Why not make it a LLSP server, while you're at it? :)

You could use www.sysinternals.com "pskil", and write a batch file to kill the processes. A bit crude, but should work just fine. Alternatively, if you annoyed with the fact that batch files pop-up a console window, it should be equally easy to do in one of the scripting languages like AutoIt or AutoHotKey.

Hmm, a CD/DVD recorder causing BSODs? Sounds like a flawed drive that can't handle large DMA buffers.

And Creative drivers... uh-fscking-oh. Real crap.

I'd rather spend 4 hours coding than 2 hours of repetitive work. If it's 20 vs. 2, I might consider doing the repetitive work... but might also still end up coding, because it's more fun and seems like less time. Also, if there's a remote chance I'll need to do something similar again, I'll of course code because I then have the experience the next time, perhaps meaning that I can do it in one hour instead of two... :)

« Last post by f0dder on August 29, 2006, 12:58 AM »
They cant shut them down unless they infringe on copyrights in place by MS or use MS code (from the leak several years ago). Neither of the projects have code from the MS Source (with the exception of a WHILE ( INKEY$ <> "" ) WEND statement ;-)
Are you sure about this?

It used to be that people could do "clean-room reverse engineering" and whatnot, but with the nasty laws coming from the US (and being forced onto other countries)...

And Projects like tinykrnl and ReactOs do need some reverse engineering; while a lot can be constructed from public information (DDK, PlatformSDK, Inside Windows 2000/XP), et cetera, achieving binary driver compatibility requires a bit more...
8323
Nasty... does show that you need to check licenses when you order software, especially software as critical as this. And that you need to be careful with hardware-locked anti-piracy systems.

Obviously using a commercial product didn't mean they got decent support, so they might as well have used some OpenSource stuff (if it was available) :)

Those screens look pretty ugly :-s

I'm holding on to my Office2000... one of the better versions, pretty fast even on my old pmmx-200/64meg (and on that hardware, you can REALLY feel how sluggish OpenOffice is >_<).
