BS. There's NO way in Hell that their costs are 10% for a transaction. That's a flat out LIE.

Jeez...

I put a Blu-ray burner in my desktop for optical backups. Now, to back up that drive, it would only take, oh, 60 dual-layer discs or 120 singles... Yikes...

Now if only we could get 3TB SSDs for $240~! :D

Google takes a swipe at Apple's 30%:
http://googleblog.bl...shers-to-manage.html

The post implies it's free, but doesn't "Google Checkout" charge 10%? If so, that's still about 8% too much for me.

I was just about to post the same topic, but you beat me to it! :D

10% is MUCH more manageable than 30%.

Google One Pass is currently available for publishers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S.

That's a bit of a drag. But I'm sure they'll roll out more with time.

Now I remember why I uninstalled Steam a while back...

It's still nigh unto impossible to buy on the Internet.

NSFW - As in really ranty and not safe for anyone

Just how fucking hard is it to give some people money?

Error #1:
****
Your billing address doesn’t look like it matches up with your current country. Please contact support for assistance or use a payment method registered to your current address.
****

Who fucking cares? It's money. Just fucking take it already!

Me, money. Me money you give. Smiley happy!

It's not that fucking hard a concept to grasp...

Error #2:
****
There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transaction. Please wait a minute and try again or contact support for assistance.
****

Oh Jesus...

I blame this entirely on fucking shit-head business/marketing cock-faces and lawyers.

I do NOT want to give such incompetent fuckwads my credit card information. Jesus Christ... How fucking stupid would that be? They cock up the payment system, then want my credit card information AND THEY WANT TO FUCKING STORE IT SO THAT IT'S "EASIER" FOR ME?

There. I feel better after getting that out of my system. Now to uninstall Steam... Yet again...

Still...

Damn! It looks like such a wicked cool game too. I mostly check out a few games and very few perk my interest. Money in hand, and no luck.

NSFW - but not as unsafe as the above
Can't manage to buy a simple game... If feel like the loser that can't get laid in the whore house... :P

Is there a non-steam version or something else that you'd recommend that's similar?

Hmmm...

Looks like 2 things:

1. There's a demand for it.
2. I reinvented the wheel. :D

I never thought to check the code snacks. I just Googled, didn't see anything interesting, so did it myself. (I could see that I would need to do the same thing again.)

One of the few pieces of paper I still have out on my desk the whole time is my regex crib sheet. I mean, I use them a lot, but dangit there are some things I still cannot remember without looking them up.

Some things in regex are so complicated that it's simply easier to fire up your IDE and write a little piece of software to do it for you. Very few people ever truly master regular expressions. I'm damn good, but there's still a lot I don't know or can never remember. Crib sheets are pretty much necessary for regex for most people. That or going back to read a tutorial on back references or whatever. :)

Speaking of...

Expresso - http://www.ultrapico.com/Expresso.htm - Started out at the Code Project. Excellent piece of free software. Highly recommended.

Can anyone compare EditPlus with EditPadPro please?

The features seem almost identical.

I prefer EditPlus. I have an EditPad Pro license that Jan gave me, but I still like EditPlus. I think EditPad Pro is probably a bit more powerful in some areas though. I find EditPlus is cleaner though. Maybe I'm just used to it though.

Jan writes THE definitive regular expressions program though -- PowerGREP. Very expensive.

I tried doing a regex thing yesterday...I don't get it at all.

RegEx is one of those things that this phrase desribes perfectly:

"It's nice to live there, but you wouldn't want to visit"
ha ha.  I totally get that.  Yeah, people swear by it who use it all the time.  But to just dabble in it makes no sense.  I was saying what the fuck a lot...

+1 * 10^10^10 timns~!

The thing with regular expressions is that the first time it saves you a kajillion hours of work, and you reflect on the few minutes that it took to get done, you realize that you are hooked, and you wonder how anyone could possibly live without them. Regular expressions are like crack^2.

I'm still sticking with PL/SQL Developer as the best option so far.  What's my favorite thing about it?  It's more responsive than the others.  it just feels faster, like a good text editor.  Actually, I'm ending up writing the queries in a text editor and pasting it into Developer because I prefer the highlighting and code folding features of most editors better than these integrated things.

Syntax highlighting is the absolute most important thing for me in a text editor. (Regular expressions are #2 by a tiny margin.) I find Editplus has the best for what I like.
I agree!  I like EditPlus also!  I just tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and i was impressed.  I can't put my finger on it yet, but it was nice.  I tried doing a regex thing yesterday...I don't get it at all.

Oh god... You MUST get to know regex in EditPlus -- you will ****ing LOVE it~!  :-*

They're not 100% full regex, but it's still enough power for 99.9% of everything you'll ever need to do.

^ - beginning of line
$ - end of line
\n - line break
\t - tab
. - any character
*+? - used for matching 0/1 or more or 0/1 of the preceding character
[a-z0-9] - range of characters, e.g. [a-f0-9] for hex
[^a-z] - character NOT in range
() - used to group for later reference
\1 - reference to a group

That's likely about all that you'll ever need in EditPlus.

Also -- MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE REPLACE DIALOG -- THERE'S AN OPTION TO DO REGEX REPLACEMENTS IN ALL OPEN FILES~! Very powerful and very useful. God... That has saved me sooooo much work.

EditPlus is fast and can handle a LOT. I loaded 900 bada headers in it the other day.

I often write my DC posts in it first. :)

But this is horribly off topic...

The way I phrase keywords is pretty specific, so it should be easy to find the same things... I don't think it's the spam thing as the results I'm getting are a lot of mailing list and forums, but they're not really as relevant and not as high quality as normal articles. It just seems like an odd shift. i.e. I want the article on the topic, not forums and mailing list with nothing but questions on the topic.

Wasn't there a CSnack creating directories listed in a file? (no time to check right now)

Not sure. I quickly checked Google, and didn't see anything. (Or nothing that I'd click on anyways -- too many really poor results & malware sites in Google lately.)

Got a question...

I had to create a bunch of folders. (64 actually) And I looked for something to help me do it, but didn't turn up anything useful. (I found some OSS, but it required compiling.)

Does anyone ever need to create a bunch of folders besides me?

(I've already written the software --- just checking if I should polish it for others.)

It's just such a simple little thing, but who in their right mind wants to manually create 50 folders or whatever. I sure as heck don't.

Apple needs to earn that 30%.

30% is a pretty standard affiliate commission. Some go higher. At CJ you can give out up to 75%.

But Apple brings ZERO value to the table as a retailer. They don't *earn* that 30%.  It's up to YOU to go out and get your customers. With 200,000 software titles in the Apple App Store (not "on" the app store because I speak English properly... but that's another rant), you are nothing but the long tail. And they want 30% to throw you in the long tail? Huh? YOU are still responsible to go out and spend the money, time, and effort to get the customers. And THEN they want a 30% cut from YOUR work AGAIN?

If Apple did jack to actually earn that 30%, it would be different. But it's not.

The whole thing boils down to YOU putting in all the work and they collect for doing nothing.

Now, if you have preferential placement in the store, like the first page or the top few in a category, well, I can see paying for that. But to be #4,832 of 12,356? That's just bullshit. And that's the bullshit piled on top of all their other bullshit, but as above, that... is another rant...

TOra looks interesting.  And yes, it's an Oracle database.  I still like PL/SQL so far.

To be honest, for your first database, Oracle doesn't really make sense. It's simply a gargantuan beast. Oracle runs countries. Something else would make more sense. MySQL is a good choice. Or PostGreSQL. MS SQL Server is good.

It's kind of like going to the firing range to learn how to shoot with strategic nuclear missiles.

Is there a reason why you're using Oracle?

"All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app."

Good grief...

I suppose it might help to have people fill in a long form so that they'd rather type on a computer than their phone...

Not for Oracle, but...

SQLYog
HeidiSQL
Query Analyzer (Microsoft SQL Server Studio)

There are lots. Just find what you like.

There is also something unpleasantly ironic about the idea that google is going to start telling people that the way to get the best results from their search engine is to use their google branded browser in order to get rid of the junk in the google search engine..

Good point.
