Living Room / Re: SSD usage recommendations
« Last post by Renegade on February 21, 2011, 07:23 AM »
I was using 1GB for a RAM drive and had BSODs every now and then.
Which ramdisk product?

It also ran out of space when using Photoshop.
Photoshop is a pig :), but can't you redirect it's scratch locations to elsewhere but %TEMP%?

SoftPerfect RAM Disk

And It's just a pain to switch the disk up to a larger size or to change the disk if it runs short. For most things, it's ok. However, it's not uncommon to run out of space. I just can't be bothered, so I don't use it anymore.

Things have been fine since. (Photoshop is a pig, as always though.)

Having a quick look and... WOW~! ASP.NET MVC 3 + Razor looks wicked, wicked cool.

Haven't dug in to ASP.Net yet, but if you're going to start from scratch, I'd say look at the most recent MVC version coupled with the Razor view engine; the old ASP stuff I've seen looked kinda sucky, but the MVC+Razor samples I've browsed on various blogs actually looks pretty sweet.

I noticed that there are truckloads of new RAD frameworks for it. OWS and a bunch of others.

I can see this is going to be somewhat painful...

I just spent the day doing what should have taken me 2 or 3 hours at most, and all because I've simply forgotten everything.

Classic ASP is just like PHP. Sucky. But more sucky than PHP. But it is quick & dirty to get stuff done.

Living Room / Re: Brave New Taxi can't be called a Taxi
« Last post by Renegade on February 21, 2011, 01:33 AM »
It is stipulated in US law that only licensed taxis can pick someone up right away

I suppose people had better stop picking their kids up from school, spouses from work, etc. etc. Sigh...

I waited for 30 minutes for a taxi this morning. And it never came. After I called twice.

Really. I just don't remember jack about it. A few tiny things are coming back, but I need seriously remedial help.

Can anyone recommend some good tutorials for getting up to speed? Like basic stuff. Needs to be for IIS 7 or 7.5 and .NET 3.5 or 4.0, though things that haven't changed from 2.0 are fine too.

It's been many years since I did anything useful, and I'm just drawing a total blank. I don't even know what sites to look at anymore.

Just as an FYI, anyone put off by Reflector freeware going away might want to keep an eye on JetBrains, makers of ReSharper (R#).  Apparently they're planning on including a decompiler in R# 6, and are planning on providing a free stand-alone version:

I see mass migration in the very near future...

Living Room / Re: Strange subtleties of the Placebo Effect
« Last post by Renegade on February 20, 2011, 03:48 PM »
That was very interesting.

What I find disturbing isn't "placebos", rather the general inability of people to "connect the dots" and follow the implications. e.g. "The Secret" and similar things. If you believe it, it will happen, etc. Skeptics generally jump on top of stuff like "The Secret" and lambaste it, but don't have a problem with placebos, which is pretty bad logic. What skeptics should be doing is... well... that's a bit long... Suffice it to say that most "skeptics" are most certainly NOT skeptics.

I'd like to see information that follows the implications for the placebo effect with respect to "self-help", religion, and spirituality. That would be interesting.

I can't help but smile over the entire thing. They go after Anonymous, and Anonymous basically hammers the b'jeez out of them.
8287
Why couldn't they just remove the timebomb and start charging for v7+?

I'd guess because the project is hemorrhaging money, and they need it to at least cover costs, and that's the easiest way to do it.
8288
I'm kind of ambivalent. It must have been a hard decision. But, if it comes to continuing, or discontinuing, $35 is better than not having it at all.

Yes... They promised to keep it free forever, but it looks like it just wasn't possible/practical.

I've been checking their site for a few weeks to see if they'll reverse their decision, but so far, it doesn't look like.

How would people react to being Rickrolled by a freeware telephone support phone number? i.e. 985-655-2500

Good? Bad?

I'm thinking of doing that... But just asking to find out opinions.

Well, it looks like anti-trust time...

http://www.nypost.co...vCWcJdjFoLD5vBSkguGO

the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission are locked in negotiations over which of the watchdogs will begin an antitrust inquiry into Apple's new policy of requiring software developers who devise applications for devices such as the iPhone and iPad to use only Apple's programming tools.

There's more to it than just that though.

That explains it then, I've always selected to use my own security question on any account that gives you the option.

Maybe that also highlights how insecure the 'standard' security questions are.

<Slightly OT>
The Australian Governments' Medicare site asks for the answers to five (5) security questions which it will randomly ask for the answers to two of at random times as you access online.   Good idea except I can only remember the answers to 2 or 3 of them, so I have to keep refreshing pages occasionally until the right questions come up.  If they let me choose my own I'd have a better chance of remembering.

Security questions are simply useless most of the time except for adding an extra layer of failure.

What street did you live on?
Real Answer: Sunny Street

Wrong Answers:
sunny street
sunny
sunny st
sunny st.
Sunny St.
etc.

Just how does that help? It needs to be semantic and not syntactic.

It's a broken system, but it won't change. There are very powerful vested interests that will make sure it stays broken.

There is no hope...

That is so negative.

Of course it will change, patent protection times will get longer and longer at the behest of patent lawyers and big corporations....oh...wait....

Bwahahahaha~! :D

You're right... It will change~!

Sigh... No hope...

I use optical for data storage. Not for system backups.

Something like Ghost works with optical for system backups though. However, I've not used Ghost for a long time. I don't even know if it's around anymore.
My guess is he didn't refer to "oh, how do I get the optical media working with this backup app" - but more along the lines of "shoot, I can't reliably get the data off this media because opticals are unstable pieces of crap" :)

Sigh... This is true... Which I why for anything important I make 2 discs, and occasionally 3 when my paranoia levels get higher.

Renegade, what do you use for discs and how much do they cost?

Not sure. I think they're like $1 a disc? Maybe $2?

I only use them for data backups. Mostly completed projects and my Visual Studio directories.

I put a Blu-ray burner in my desktop for optical backups.
What, there's still people using optical media for backups? O_o

I see a lot of SOHO/SMBs doing optical backups ... I've yet to see any of them do a successful restore... *Shrug* ...But at least they're trying. ;)

@40Hz - If only it were that simple... :(

It's as simple as you let it be.  :)

Much easier said than done.

When so many people go out and buy Apple products, and with such a large economy, it's hard to ignore (as a developer).

As a developer, you need to write for the devices/platforms that people are using. If that means Apple, well, then it's Apple.

What good would it do to write for Palm OS? Or the PET, or CBM, or Windows 98? Nobody uses them anymore.

While it may seem simple, it's not really THAT simple.

I like having optical backups. I backup to other external drives, but optical are great as they are cheap and discrete.
