Finished Programs / Re: DONE: Program Closer
« Last post by Deozaan on May 27, 2008, 07:06 PM »
Just a head's up: New member Mikinder came into IRC today and said that AVG (8.0.100) is reporting that this program contains a worm called AutoIT.

I told him that AutoIT is a scripting language, and to my recollection it's what mouser used to batch convert all of Skrommel's AHK scripts to exes using the latest version of AHK. But I thought I should mention it here just in case I was wrong and so it wouldn't surprise anyone if we got more reports of a similar nature.

Oh yeah, and I'd also like confirmation because I'm not absolutely sure I'm right about this. So if someone could verify the file is clean and this is just another false positive, that would be great!

You can also help by giving up your expensive habits.

You know the ones I'm talking about!
Food, water, shelter, clothes, electricity... All those similar luxuries you can do without.  ;) :P

So I'd seen the first two videos months ago and thought they were kind of cool but not all that great. But tonight I just saw the head-tracking video for the first time.

WOW! That is impressive!

I think artists like Nudone may be interested in the Whiteboard capabilities --> Turn your wall into a virtual canvas.

Or with head-tracking you could even turn your wall into a virtual window. Find a nice live feed of a beach in the tropics and get the image set up to work with this software...

Living Room / Re: Wireless Internet signal allergy
« Last post by Deozaan on May 25, 2008, 06:50 PM »
It seems to me that unless having a "wireless" allergy is legally classified as a real disability, then having wireless signals around don't discriminate people with disabilities since it's not legally acknowledged as a true disability.

But yeah, do a double blind test with something like what jgpaiva mentioned and see how many of them are liars. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's hard to imagine there really is a problem, especially with a big enough group in one small area to complain about it. We're bombarded with signals and waves all day long, and have been since radio became widely available. Not to mention satellites and cell phones, etc.

Also, most wireless internet devices use 2.4Ghz frequency, which is also what microwaves and wireless telephones and other wireless home devices use. Oh yeah, and PINE NEEDLES emit a frequency of 2.4Ghz as well. So they'd have to remove all Pine trees from the area too.

I wonder if these people complain when they get too close to a tree or microwave.

Some beauties there. Only problem is no-one else gets the joke.

This has got to be the best one I've ever heard:

In fact I'm more upset by adults who are not using uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences or writing "I" as "i"... Sounds familiar?  :P

If you have Office 2007 there's a great program called Groove that does this for you. You can set up specific folders for it to watch and as long as you have Groove installed on any other computer, it will automatically synchronize them for you.

I can't figure out how to change the "ignore these files types" list. It's either ignore all files Microsoft deems to be dangerous or don't ignore anything at all.

And it won't synchronize folders larger than 2GB

If your sister is old enough to have to type a 3 page report, I wouldn't consider her a "kid" or "child" when it comes to being able to control the caps lock button.

As for why she does it... I suspect it's a lot like the Tootsie Pop Mystery: The world may never know.

- no, the sale has just begun, but will end with May:

Then maybe you should fix your link in the original post. Now all it shows me are some clocks. It's kind of confusing to be told there are lots of car models on sale but then link to some chairs or clocks.

I still can't find any cars on sale from the links you've given.

Well f0dder, it sounds like though we disagree on the "root topic," we're on the same page of what are some of the beneficial steps to take.

I think this is why I brought up Global Warming in the first place in this thread. Because just about anywhere else, if I were to say I didn't think it was caused by man, I'd immediately be defamed, ridiculed, and shut down instead of being able to have an intelligent conversation and be able to reach the point of finding out that we both have very similar "solutions" even if we don't agree on what the problem is.
8288
You have to type the email address in two different places, and it really shouldn't be an address that will be received on the same computer.

Yeah I'm aware of that. It never got an e-mail through, so I've uninstalled it.

Whatever causes the warming, denying it is stupid - because it is happening, and it will have nasty consequences. How big a part mankind has in the warming is debatable, but it's my personal belief that we should at least try to do something about it.

I'm certainly not suggesting we trash the environment. I'm all for energy efficiency, and reducing toxic chemicals, etc.

The problem with Global Warming is that if mankind didn't cause it, there's nothing we can do to "stop causing" it. If mankind did nothing to bring it on, then it wouldn't matter if we shut down all carbon emissions in the entire world because it would have happened regardless of there being any human on the planet or not.

I'd rather focus on more important things we can do something about. Food shortages, disease research, alternative fuels for vehicles, nuclear power, etc.

Do you think that the recent food shortages might have anything to do with farmers growing millions of acres of corn to be used for ethanol instead of actually growing food? Do you realize that the amount of corn it takes to produce enough ethanol to fill a standard SUV's gas tank once could feed a man for a year? Talk about a massive waste of resources and harm to the environment!

Plus just the idea of making countries pay for Carbon Credits is ludicrous. Who's generating the carbons and saying "alright guys, we have this much this year, buy 'em up?" It's just a scam to punish wealthy countries, making them buy invisible goods that don't exist by placing a false limit on them. Next thing you know we're going to have to buy "oxygen credits" so we can breathe with approval from the UN or whatever stupid organization is setting up these silly regulations.

I personally believe that while the temperature of the earth has gone up 1 degree or whatever, the idea of it being man-made is false, and that the earth naturally goes through warm and cold cycles and this is one of them. However, in saying that, I also believe that we should do things to keep the earth clean, and we should focus our millions of billions of dollars on things that we can actually affect: Food, medical, and power. I honestly can't see any reason, given current technology and resources, why there are parts of the world without these three basic things. Well, okay, the only reason I can see is "Dollar Signs in the Eyes" of certain organizations or people.

Some people just keep repeating what media tells them and then they claim that those are their personal ideas.

Personally I'm of the opinion that people who think Global Warming is caused by humans are doing exactly that. Because that's the only thing the media reports. They only discredit and defame those who try to say otherwise.

EDIT: To clarify what I meant and remove a great generalization, I should say that I think most people who think Global Warming is caused by man are doing exactly that. Obviously there are smart people who have considered the issue and come to their own conclusions, and I don't mean to call those people "sheep of the media" just because they came to a conclusion I disagree with.

Living Room / Re: The last time your AntiVirus saved you!
« Last post by Deozaan on May 23, 2008, 03:13 PM »
The only virus I can remember being infected with was because my mother didn't know any better and opened e-mail attachments on her computer. When all they did was load up a console window and shut down, she just thought it didn't work and went on with life.

It was on her own computer, but I had networked a drive or two to get quick access to files, and my computer ended up with it too. But that was probably close to 7 years ago.

EDIT: Oh and by the way. The AntiVirus didn't catch it and save me. I only found out when someone e-mailed me saying I was sending out viruses. I had to manually get rid of it somehow.

Everybody knows that christmas is really Dec24, though :)

No it isn't. That's Christmas Eve. :P

I know a lot of people do all the celebrating on Dec 24, but there are some of us (probably nearly just as many) that do the celebrations on Dec 25.

The bad part is that if the fan does stop on my GPU, and stuff starts melting, it hits not only my $40 USB card, but my $150 X-Fi card and my $110 TV Tuner card. :tellme:
-wreckedcarzz (May 22, 2008, 01:54 PM)

It didn't drip on anything else. The fan was screwed onto the heatsink at 3 points. The plastic melted at those three points and the fan fell off. When I looked in my case it looked like someone had used a hot glue gun to attach my fan to the heat sink. It was sticky melted. Not drippy liquid melted.

I answered my own questions by reading more about it.

It lists both your local IP and ISP IP.

I just couldn't ever get it to send me an e-mail during configuration, so unfortunately it's worthless for me.

People who abuse the authority and power given to them.
8296
How useful is it really to know the IP and ISP of a system?

I was under the impression that the IP address was fairly general/broad and wouldn't let you precisely locate a machine.

And about the program, if anyone has it installed: I'm curious as to how it works with regard to LAN IPs vs. Internet IPs. Is it going to be stupid and say the IP is 192.168.0.3 or be smart and give the real IP address?

Just be careful with how much you overclock your GPU. The GPU itself can withstand high temperatures, but other components on it may not.

I learned that the hard way when my GPU fan stopped spinning and melted off my GPU. The GPU still works, but obviously wouldn't last very long without another fan blowing on it.
