7-zip (although i am also trying out haozip)
asap utilities
autoit
axcrypt
bleachbit
cisco vpn client
cmd-open-install (a better command-prompt-here alternative)
my "copy-into-winnt" folder - a bunch of no-install-needed single-exe-file utilities I use constantly
display fusion
dolphin text editor menu
dvdfab
elevation powertoys
fastcopy
filemenutools
freefilesync
inssider
imgburn
magicdisk
lastpass
listary
mailstore (just started trying this)
noise ninja (for photoshop)
notepad2
paragon hdm suite pro
pdfcreator
photoshop
puretext
qimage
riot
screenshot captor
send to toys
spamihilator
spflite editor (awesome especially if you did any ibm mvs/jes work!)
sumatra
supercopier
t-clock
windirstat
winpatrol
wireshark
xplorer2

plus odds & ends as needed :-)

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Drag files from menu / dock
« Last post by x16wda on April 11, 2012, 07:27 PM »
I'm not sure I understand.  I can drag a file from my file manager onto my Photoshop icon, and it will open the file in Photoshop.  I have a stack of program icons on the right edge of my left-hand monitor for just that purpose.  I think that's the opposite direction from what you're asking (drag the file onto the program, instead of drag the program onto the file) but is that significant?

for me the most important file management related tool is not a file manager but [url=http://www.listary

  Agree on several counts!  Listary rocks (I even paid for the licensed version), and it works great in xplorer2 (like other add-ins - Supercopier, shell extensions, etc)!

I found elevate32 and elevate64 (from http://www.westmesatech.com/index.html), maybe those will work for you.  They're in the Elevation Toolkit under Misc Tools.

But of course I must now re-test Xplorer2; I have forgotten why I didn't like it.

Yah, with what, 30 or 40 options, it's hard to keep them all straight...  :D

General Software Discussion / yet another file manager thread...
« Last post by x16wda on April 08, 2012, 02:16 PM »
Anyone up for another alternate file manager thread?

I ended up buying a lifetime Xplorer2 Ultimate license recently, and it cost me only a wee bit more than my DOpus 2-pc license of a few years ago.  I couldn't stand Win 7 Explorer any longer (the reasons are legion) even though it has improved in some ways from the XP days, and even though I was hoping to find a satisfying free alternative, I couldn't do it.  I tried most of the other pay-fors as well, and almost chose XYplorer but ended up not going that route for several reasons.

I'm liking it more and more the more I use it and I'm very satisfied, but I'm curious about the main reasons folks choose one FM versus another.  Or even why people decide they don't want to use an alternative, even a free one!

OK, next question, what is the framework?  Do you want a batch utility to do this and return a result you can check, or documentation on what to look for to incorporate into a routine you are writing, or ??

Network drives - yes definitely.  Anything else will work, I think, if you can get it to map as a drive letter (e.g., with ftpdrive, netdrive, etc).

If nothing else, if your C and D partitions are on the same physical drive you could always reallocate the space (shrink your D and enlarge your C).  There are a number of free programs to do that for you; I have always had excellent results with Paragon software (http://www.paragon-s...com/home/pm-express/ is their free partition manager page).

from http://answers.micro...02-85ba-fd49a007fd82:

The My Documents folder is part of Windows 7's new Documents Library.  A library combines multiple folders that contain similar types of files.

To move your documents to the D drive:

1. Create a new documents folder on the D drive.
 2. Right-click the new folder and click Include in Library > Documents .
 3. Click Start > Documents .
 4. Double-click My Documents to show its contents.
 5. Drag and drop the files to the new folder.
 6. Press F5 to refresh the view.
 7. Under Documents Library , click locations .
 8. Right-click the new folder and click Set as default save location .
 9. [Optional] Click My Documents and click Remove .

Maybe I'm missing something, but with the current version of SCC (3.03.01) I had no trouble doing a Grab Current Screen while WMP was in full screen mode (F11) playing the sample wildlife video.  Win 7 x64, with an Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT, 295.73 driver.  (That's full screen on one 1920x1080 monitor, not spanning both of them.)

General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ... a Gateway cure ...
« Last post by x16wda on April 05, 2012, 06:44 PM »
Actually my task when I came into work this morning was to find a way to track pool growth, since my boxes were cooperative enough to spit out a semi-incriminating event before they locked up.  My remembrance of perfmon was that it was too convoluted to get set up, so I was about to write a quick script when I came across this.

I should point out that the -m parameter tracks by process, you could also use a -p parameter to track by tag but that's more work to track down if you get a hit  ;)

Anyway, if you have a leaky app running on your boxes, hopefully this will show it up.  But if it's something innocuous that suddenly goes wild, you might not catch it.

PS- You can also just run a few snapshots by hand too, it doesn't need to be on a schedule...

Could be a pool shortage.  I just started looking at some similar instances myself (although with older servers).

One thing I have set up is a Microsoft tool, Memsnap.exe (in the Server 2003 resource kit).  I set up a scheduled task to run a batch file every 15 minutes with "memsnap -m c:\memsnap.log".  Then after it has a few snapshots saved you can look at the results with "memsnap -a c:\memsnap.log".  May not help, but if there's a memory leak it might point to the culprit.  (It's the simplest way I could find to watch for something like this, and it's free.)

If you are using Excel then you should absolutely have ASAP Utilities installed (http://www.asap-utilities.com).  Free for home use, students and charitable institutions.  It makes inserting text to the beginning of the cells a snap.  Along with huge numbers of other things.

General Software Discussion / Re: reserved characters in NTFS
« Last post by x16wda on April 05, 2012, 07:18 AM »
AFAIK, nope.
If you REALLY want to use them, then you can create an NTFS stream and name it "name" or something like that, then put the file name in there and write a custom browser that reads those file names.

+1

Another vote here for FreeFileSync.  I used Goodsync for awhile (until the company changed their policies), and before that Synctoy and a couple others, but FFS is simple and works really well.  Can be run from a batch file too, and includes a realtime sync service that you can set up to sync whenever a folder changes.
