Yes, that menu selection used to be in the menu bar under View>Newspaper>Styles, I believe. It is now pretty well hidden down on the right side of the status bar.

No thanks - I finally got my V3 working. I had the next to last build from V3 installed. I installed the latest - it was released less than a week after the one I was using - and it started working again. So I went ahead and upgraded to V4. I am still undecided as to how much I like this version though. Nick did remove more features than I expected. I had read all about them but the impact is hard to assess - until you start really using it.

Thanks!

Outline 4D looks interesting, but at that price I would want a bit longer of a trial version to see if it indeed would meet my needs. I have too often made a purchase thinking that the app looked like it would work for me, only to discover after really getting into it that it doesn’t. I wonder why the trial is so short?

Thanks!

Newspaper Style Blue Vista. I'm afraid that it is gone for good. I saw other posts from users who upgraded asking about it in the new FeedDemon Google Group and Nick said that he didn't include it in 4.0. So I'd have to get used to a different reading style. Certainly not a deal killer but I wish I could see some of the remaining styles in 4.0 before upgrading.

Also, I really want to see why I lost all my feeds in 3.1 before upgrading! When I opened it about two weeks ago it had a lot of old posts in the DB so I used the clean-up wizard and all disappeared. The subscriptions are all still in there but no articles at all. It should be able to easily re-sync with Google Reader and get the latest articles but it isn't. I made sure that my Google Reader username and password are correct - they are - and that I can log in to Google Reader OK - I can. But FeedDemon can't log in to Google Reader. Nick asked me to go to View>Reports>FeedDemon Event Log and send the log to him but that menu item doesn’t exist in FD 3.1; only in 4.x. I did manage to locate the FD log but it is in some non-human-readable language. I got it converted to a format where I could read most of it and saw that FD was getting a 403 error for every feed and a 400 error for the main Google Reader log-in itself. Basically FeedDemon is not able to log in to my Google Reader account. Like I said, log-in credentials in FeedDemon are correct so it should be able to log in. But it can't apparently. Nick had me delete some registry keys, uninstall and reinstall FD - no dice. He asked if I was banned from logging into Google Reader but I use my Google account daily without problems and I can log into Google Reader and see all my feeds just fine. Finally after my last post I just stopped getting any more replies from Nick. I'm guessing that he doesn’t really know what is wrong at this point and so moved on to other issues there.

I imagine that 4.0 might magically start working if I upgrade but I would really like to find out what the problem is before I pay for the upgrade. I mean, if it is something stupid like another developer pulled on me - suggesting to me that his app doesn’t always work well on Windows 7 if you have an Nvidia graphics card, so tough poop! - then I don’t want to upgrade! Not unreasonable of me, methinks!?

Thanks!

Hey Mr. Darwin, sir: So did you go ahead and upgrade to FeedDemon 4? If so, how do you like it so far? I understand that a lot has changed. (Like my most favorite view in the entire world is gone!   >:(  )

I was going to get the upgrade but am holding off now; I started up FD3 - which I hadn't used in a few weeks - and it will not sync and more. I am feedless! I posted on the new FD Google Group and discussed ti with Nick but nothing seems to get it moving again. I even reinstalled - nothing. I was hoping Nick could figure out why before I shell out $$ for an upgrade, but he seems to have given up.

Thanks!

That's odd because I don’t have Surfulator start with Windows yet if I'm browsing and decide to clip a page to Surfulator I just right-click within the browser, Select All, then right-click again and click "Surfulator: Add Article Plus Page". That causes Surfulator to open and get the page copy.

Curt,

Surfulator is still developed, though not necessarily in ways that I would like. Of course that speaks only to my personal wants. At the discounted price you posted, I would definitely get it. It's web page rendering is not great but certainly decent enough. I haven't found any that render pages anywhere near as good as the Scrapbook extension for Firefox.

For a free alternative there is Local Website Archive by Aignes, the developer of Web Site Watcher. There is also a Pro version - depends what you want to do with the web pages once you have them.

Probably includes all hours a TV is powered on. Think how many fall asleep in front of the TV, or have it on in the bedroom and fall asleep.

Me? I have one 30" LCD HDTV on round the clock! It's a "Dell" brand from 2005 and is a POS, but the power supply in most of these quit working early on and while it stays on OK if you turn it off it is almost impossible to power it back on! (Last time I forgot and turned it off it took cycling the on/off switch 58 times to get it on again.   >:(  )

Oh, and for those who will now lambaste me for the power waste, I plugged this into a Kill-O-Watt meter for three months to see what the damage was and it actually takes surprising little power to run. A mere fraction of a running PC and monitor.

I will usually try to answer any question which I am equipped to answer. The only exception, the kinds of questions that bug me are when someone just purchased/obtained a program and very obviously hasn’t even tried to use it yet. E.g., "I just downloaded and installed this. How do I use it?". Grrr...  >:(  Especially when the title of the thread they started is something similar to "HEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPP!!!! plz!!?"

Most Revo's only lasted me ~6 months; one only worked for a little more than three months. I returned three but the replacements eventually failed also. I repaired three at different times. Two worked but one of those only worked for another two months and failed again. The third repair attempt failed. Great mice to use, but too darned fragile IMO!

I've been through seven MX Revolution Mice. All eventually fail due to very poor microswitch position design in the left button. Sure, mouse buttons do wear out over time but the MX Revolution has a much worse track record than any other mouse on the market. Check the Logitech forums and you will see that.

There is a way to repair the microswitch but it is not easy. It is very tiny and it doesn’t go back together as easily as it comes out! Kinda spring loaded. Here's a link to the repair instructions:

http://www.overclockers.com/mouse-clicking-troubles-diy-repair/

Also, Rich Owens, the developer of UberOptions, an advanced configuration utility for Logitech mice (add-on for SetPoint) has a page with info about Logitech's oft-failing microswitches here:

A good example of the correct way to imply RTFM is Kinook's Ultra Recall forum. On a few occasions - and on many others for other users - I have gotten a reply to my question from the developer that consisted of a link to the Online Help page that contains an answer. In all cases I have searched through the UR Help file but it is an extremely extensive file that, while containing a vast amount of knowledge, is more of a great read for programming types and kind of hard to understand by mere mortals! (I occasionally read the UR manual when I am having difficulty falling asleep!  ;D )

Thanks!

I tried Clipperz about a year and a half ago, before I went with LastPass. It wasn’t that bad; worked OK on a lot of sites but had trouble with more than I expected. And the development, while steady, wasn’t moving along very fast. I made a number of suggestions and while the developer seemed receptive it will take a long time to build it up to where it needs to be IMO. Seems like a one-person show almost. LastPass was more advanced and covered more pages at that time.

Well, the server concern might keep you from LastPass then Carol. But in case you decide to try it anyway it is not difficult to move the logins from Roboform to LastPass. You use the Print List (Full URLs) in Roboform, open the resulting file in a text editor and paste that into LastPass's Import form tool. You have to do the logins separate from the Safe Notes. Make sure to export the list in a readable format also (from RF) so if you see any items that didn't hit the correct fields in LastPass - occasionally custom notes - and then you can edit the few cards that need it. I had over 700 logins in Roboform so just to be certain I broke mine down into blocks of 200, as some folks had problems with large numbers of logins importing. However LastPass claims they have solved any such issues, though I haven't tried again.

Worth a try if you really don?t want to pay Roboform more cash.

Ditto to everything cyberdiva posted above. WSW is still installed here, and I do use it very occasionally. However I did refuse the last upgrade as it appears that Martin has gotten into the "major upgrade every year whether or not it's needed" mode. The last few upgrades added nothing that helps me at all, and the WSW interface is still one that only a coder could love IMO. Trying to get a script written to do what you want, barring the simplest of requests, can be very complex and requesting assistance with such scripts can definitely leave you feeling like a complete dunce.

Check&Get looks like it could be a better fit for me but I'd need to try it for a reasonable amount of time to see.

Thanks!

Here's an article mentioning the Roboform license model change: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-Not-To-Change-A-Licensing-Model-171188.shtml

And here's a Roboform Purchase page from Aug 2008 care of The Wayback Machine:  http://web.archive.org/web/20080822215550/www.roboform.com/why-pro.html  It doesn’t say "Lifetime" specifically but at the top you can see "Free Upgrades" displayed. They have always claimed free upgrades - for good. E.g., I started using RF at V.3 or 4, when it was free only. Then in 2003 I purchased two Pro licenses for V.5. All upgrades since then have been free, until now.

Huh? What do you mean? I use Keepass - not as my primary password manager but as a secure backup for all my passwords - online and off.

Oh, I just checked their website and I can definitely live without it. They want half the prices over again for me to upgrade - yet all my licenses were so-called "lifetime" licenses. And my discount for this Everywhere subscription crap is $10.00, making the first year $9.95... But that is the current discounted price for everyone! So I get no discount for this POS.

You know, Slysoft switched to a regular license model recently but for new customers only! Plus they announced it a month in advance and offered the lifetime licenses one last time at a 20% discount. Even then, after hearing from customers they put the changes off for a year!! BTW, all existing license holders still have lifetime licenses; our licenses were not affected by the change. And yet still there were a lot of complaints here at DC about it!

Now Roboform is doing similar, but in their case existing customers do not get to use their lifetime licenses anymore. Instead we are abandoned and must pay to keep using the product. Obviously this won't directly affect me as I am not using RF now, but by virtue of the fact that I purchased FOUR licenses that were never supposed to expire, I am being shat upon as much as any RF user.

Some companies are honorable about changes like this. Apparently Siber Systems is not one of them.

I switched to LastPass over a year ago, and I have two desktop licenses, one Robo-2-Go Flash Drive, and a Pocket PC license also. Back throughout 2008 Roboform would not keep up with Firefox releases. Anything that was called a beta was not supported and even when FF would make an official release Roboform was taking at times 2-3 months to release a version that would work with it. Plus as a long time user I knew the support folks from way back; that all changed and they started using support techs who were very short, non-informative, and non-helpful. I tried a few other apps but once LastPass got going and it worked so well for me I paid for the Premium license and have stuck with it ever since.

There hasn’t yet been a release of Firefox that LastPass didn't work for me. So far, anyway.
Thanks!

I think that video tutorials would be excellent. However I personally like to have a manual that I can refer to when needed. I can't always sit at the computer and read or watch tutorials; certain problems prevent me from sitting in any one position for very long, so I often print out sections of manuals so I can read them, make notes on the parts I really need, etc. and then have that with me when I return to the computer to work on that particular application. I even go as far as to convert Help files into PDF documents so I can print all or portions of them and use them as I need them.

Of course I don’t expect a full blown manual for Sagelight to be written any time soon, but...  if you or anyone else catches the writing bug anytime in the future...  sure would be greatly appreciated here!  :) :P

Thanks!

By definition, the cables are secret-related, even if not 'classified' rating.  A good write-up on what a cable is was done by Slate.

From that article:
Cables, on the other hand, usually contain more important information that's meant to be accessible to other diplomatic and military staff with the appropriate security clearance.

There is no such definition of cable classification, in that article or anywhere else. "meant to be" is what the article says, yet federal regulations call for any restricted communication to receive a classification designation. And 15,652 (6%) of the cables were indeed classified as Secret as noted in my last post. The rest were not.

And no, I haven't trolled the release, other than a few documents and news media outlets such as NPR and such. (the very nature of the release means that to do so would take a lot of time I don't have, so I leave it to those that do).

Hmm..  And here I consider that people have "read" or "perused" the released documents. You seem to be implying that to do so is trolling...

But that's what I meant by in your (and the slanted view of those that report this) view- nothing as a slight.  But if the gatherers of the information deemed it to be placed in such regard, then who are we to say that they aren't, not knowing the full picture?

OK, "nothing as a slight", and yet you call my view "slanted" along with others who report this? Slanted compared to what? Your view? Which I guess is "normal" or "standard"? Please explain.

On second thought, I think I will end my input here as it seems to be getting a little too personal for you. Politics and religion and all that; guess it's true!

TTFN

Jim
849
Most certainly is NOT my opinion. Why are you assuming that? Have you even seen any of the documents? Do you have any idea of what their classifications are? Or are you just extending your "doctor-patient relationship top secret" presumption across all possible leaked documents? (A senseless analogy when in fact the actual classification of the documents is known!)

The 251,287 documents released are classified as follows:

  • Just over half of the cables are not subject to classification.
  • 40.5 percent are classified as "confidential".
  • Only 6 percent or 15,652 dispatches as "secret".
  • The release contains 4,330 messages which are "not meant for foreigners".
That's why I stated "non-Secret-related but embarrassing documents" in my previous post. That is what many of them are. Definitely more so than are "Secret".

Jim
850
The thing is, I don't mind leaks if they expose wrong doing that should be made public, after appropriate measures have been taken to take it through proper channels and nothing has been done.  But leaking just because 'information should be free' is complete BS IMO.  Even the openleaks.org will still be a front, because they won't make *everything* public.  There's no way.  Unless they tape everything 24 hours a day while they work (which would then make the information useless because of information overload), there's no way.

But would you really leave it up to Assange - or whomever actually leaks documents to him - to separate the wheat from the chaff and "expose wrong doing" only? Just who is the arbiter of wrong vs. right info that "should be made public"? The government that classified non-secret-related but embarrassing documents? Obviously that hasn’t worked.

Thank you.
