General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« Last post by nosh on November 24, 2008, 02:31 AM »
This thread is going to provide some nice entertainment for people reading it a decade or so later. :)

I couldn't care less about my PC's boot time, the one device I need to boot fast FAST (my Symbian S60 cell) always seems to wait for my BP to reach near-critical levels first.

I can understand Don's feelings, especially if he believes that Josh is 'serial-punishing' him whenever he can, but as someone who frequents the DC forums I would like to be able to slam software whenever I feel like it without having to worry about the thread getting personal.

General Software Discussion / Re: 'Everything' is one FAST file search engine

As things stand right now (all files displayed in the results list when the program starts up) that seems like a pretty bad idea. Just try to sort by date without searching for anything and watch the program freeze up, it's the same delay you would face each time you start the app if it sorted by date as default. It would make sense if the sorting was done by a separate thread and a new search would terminate sort + re-sort.

I've been triggering Everything (on WinXP) with Win+F using AutoHotkey.

The script uses Win+F as a toggle to show/hide Everything. It also starts Everything if it is detected that it isn't running.

You may need to modify:
1. The first line in the script, if you are using something other than Win+F.
2. The hotkey used (in Everything: Tools -> Options -> General) to Alt+Shift+F. If you want to use another hotkey, modify the one used by the script to match the combination you choose.
3. The path to Everything.exe, if it's something besides C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe

13. Porn Breath Tests for PCs Heralds 'stop and Scan'

"The disc goes into the CD-ROM drive of the PC and if files are found, the user connects a USB-DVD writer to the back of the computer, and the images that are stored in memory in the RAM of the computer are written to the DVD," Professor Valli said. "Nothing gets written to the original evidence at all, which is the key."

This thing doesn't scan for deleted files and there's no mention of any uber-sophisticated (or otherwise) decryption+pattern search technology either. Wonder how many child pornographers innocent shlobs with nudies of their wives/girlfriends will be ensnared by this little beauty.

Oh come on f0dder, you've expressed a liking for their cursor set before this - still have a bump on my head to prove it.

So pretty!  :-*
( I wonder why no one at MS has thought of incorporating a popup launcher like FARR/Launchy into the OS.  :tellme: )

Waitasec, is that what the Run dialog is supposed to be?

Living Room / Re: microsofts anti piracy measures in china
« Last post by nosh on October 29, 2008, 02:47 AM »
Going under the assumption that the software is actually illegal, that would be like a bank robber complaining about the cash that blew up in his face and inked him red.

Theoretical arguments aside, I can see a lot of legit users (read: Westerners) seeing red black because of this.

MS's anti-piracy measures at the ground level are a total fcuking joke in India and I've even called up their anti-piracy hotline and mentioned that to the automaton who answered it. MS's software is widely regarded as free for the home user and every kid knows exactly where to go and buy something like the latest MS Office suite for around $2-3. This bit of knowledge has strangely evaded MS and its crack anti-piracy squad, maybe they're too busy figuring out which shade of black will least aggravate their legit users.

And your link seems to be more of a plug for Kingsoft than anything else.

Edit: Location mentioned for clarity.

Good job with the spoilers, Ethyar.
One last suggestion, the secondary links should go at the very bottom, IMO - that way we can click and start reading immediately (as opposed to 598 ms later, YMMV.  :P )

I just don't like web apps...I think that's it.  I don't like the way they feel, if that makes any sense.

I have to agree. Even if speed isn't that much of a problem (I don't have high-speed broadband here but I remember browsing from a public library in Toronto, I'd click on a normal sized mp3 online and it would start playing like it was on the HDD), reliability very much is, and will be for years to come. How often does one witness technology fcuking up at the highest level? CNN/BBC anchors losing audio with each other... :/
Online apps make excellent backup alternatives but it would really suck to be shut out of your OS coz the Internets are broken.

How off topic am I?
Not off topic enough to stop me from taking it a bit further. :P

Thanks for the effort, Ethyar.  :)

The item title would be linked to the main source so the rest of the links would go inside the spoiler, IMO.
I'd prefer the two line summary to go inside too but I'm sure there are going to be mixed opinions on that one, since it's going to be a test run you could try both options and see what people think.

Have you considered collapsible sections (spoiler tags) for each item? That would serve as a TOC and do away with a lot of scrolling.

I would give much more credibility to a product if the author/employee introducing it clearly mentions his affiliation right from the get-go, without anyone prodding for a clarification. Or better put, I would be completely put off a product if I suspect the person introducing it is withholding his/her affiliation. Just my $0.02

I also suspect it's to do with UPX compression, AHK dumps upx.exe in its 'compiler' folder - perhaps they use the latest version everytime it's available & reverse the whitelisting in the process?

If this is true AHK authors could avoid false positives by using an older UPX that has been whitelisted, I suppose it should work unless ahk2exe has started using some new switch only available to the new version, one could also consider rolling back ahk2exe and whatever else is used for compiling in case of incompatibilities.

I agree yksyks - I didn't even bother comparing the thing to Locate coz the sheer flexibility & depth of features the latter provides would probably take other devs years to incorporate into their apps, assuming they even bothered. This is strictly for the "must-have-realtime" crowd, which is why I compared it to Avafind. I can't wait for Locate to fill in the few remaining blanks (realtime indexing, recently launched/changed/added file panes, highlighting of searched terms within results...) so we can have the perfect (filename) search app.  :)

It doesn't track newly added files. I'll uninstall everything else once it starts doing that. I believe the feature ranks high on the author's to-do list, so I suppose it's just a matter of time. *fingers crossed*

General Software Discussion / 'Everything' is one FAST file search engine
« Last post by nosh on September 26, 2008, 10:29 AM »
Lifehacker blogged about Everything, a search app similar to AvaFind (mini review), yesterday.
Both these are file name, and not context indexing tools. Both index files in realtime, unlike the universal favorite, Locate.

Some ways in which Everything differs from Avafind -

  • Boolean & Regex support.
  • Highlighting the searched text within results.
  • It doesn't allow blocking specific folders from being indexed
  • No recently launched/downloaded files panes like Avafind
  • Eerily fast indexing (seeing is believing!)

Everything is under 300 KB & free. I'd say it still has some important features missing but this app looks very promising, totally worth taking for a spin.
