LaunchBar Commander / Re: McAfee again. Don't ask.
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 08, 2009, 02:31 PM »
Oh, no. I was replying to April & didn't think quoting was necessary because I was posting right below her. She got rid of a PaintShop Pro plugin, a game, a program included with one of Mouser's program, and upgraded another program all in the name of keeping McAfee happy. I don't think I would have been so understanding of McAfee's inability to play nice with others.
Oh, I see.  I agree with you.

Agnitum as a free version of their Outpost firewall program that has been well received. It's the only firewall besides Online Armor that scores 100% in leak tests.
Thanks for the suggestion about Agnitum.  I'm still running Sygate, and while I think it still works pretty well, I wouldn't at all mind having a program that's being kept up.  I may give Agnitum a try.

Can't be having that or you'd have to be emailing Mouser and having him change your forum name to EmoDiva or something similar.
What a great idea!  :D

Sometimes false positives are not really false. One example of this is some security software. Some anti-malware programs will flag them because they can be used for bad as well as good. Another thing to consider is the context of the alert. I had to set up a keylogger for a client who needed to see what some wayward employee wase up to on a company PC. His anti-malware program immediately flagged it as Generic.PS (Password Stealer). Of course, a keylogger could be used to steal passwords so that was a valid alarm even though the program was on the computer for a valid purpose.
Yes, I see your point.  However, as EmoDiva, I exaggerate,  and I write first, think later  >:D

Gosh, I think I'd be more inclined to trash the AV program that wouldn't work well with my programs rather than trash the programs that didn't work with the AV program.
I'm not sure whether this is in response to what I said about getting rid of Online Armor, but I think I should explain that I received a registered copy for free in some special offer.  I was simply trying it out.  There was a lot I didn't like about it--e.g., it slowed down my computer, and it tried to be an anti-malware and an anti-virus program (although it was supposed to be just a firewall) and interfered with other programs I have for those functions.  It turned out to be incompatible with McAfee, but that was only one of the reasons I got rid of it.

BTW, I think I have less patience with false positives than you do.  They make me waste lots of time and they raise my angst level.  Any program that reports a false positive more than once in a blue moon is a program I think seriously about replacing.

So far I have only run into major compatibility programs with two programs. DC's own CodeTRUCKER has run into problems with The Bat! email program while running Avast and the Newsbin Pro forum has posts regarding problems while running Avast as well.
[snip]
Avast is free so it won't hurt anything to try it. Just pay attention to your other programs while its running and if there are problems you can always uninstall it. AVG is another free one to look into if Avast does not work out for you.
Thanks, Innuendo.  Though I have The Bat! I've found I prefer Mulberry, so Avast's problems with The Bat! won't impact on me.  I went to the Newsbin Pro forum to see whether I could find out more.  Apparently Avast interfere's with Newsbin Pro; according to a posting I read there, so too does MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.  Since I don't use Newsbin Pro, I guess I'm not worried about Avast, though I do wonder whether Avast will play nicely with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Pro.  I had to turn off the resident protection in the latter because McAfee had major hissy fits.  McAfee also got into fights with the Online Armor firewall, which was having an identity crisis and didn't want to be just a firewall.  I removed Online Armor.

As for AVG, thanks for the suggestion, but I'm VERY wary of anything coming from AVG, since in the past I had bad experiences with its anti-spyware program.  It frequently produced false positives, as I recall.  I got rid of it a while ago.  Since the easiest thing is to leave well enough alone and stay with McAfee, I think I'll do that for now, until the next time it does something that ticks me off.  Shouldn't be long  ;) .

Screenshot Captor / Re: How do I capture the Add or Remove Programs list?

I'm curious to know how HyperSnap does it (though I must say the HyperSnap author is a very clever guy so i'm not surprised if he found a clever solution).
Mouser, if you mean how he does it technically, I don't have a clue.  But I can describe the feature.  If you choose AutoScroll Region, you get something that's rather like a crop mechanism for a photograph--a selection box that you can make larger or smaller and position wherever on the screen you want it (it also gives you the dimensions as you change its size).  You choose the region of the screen that you want to capture as it scrolls down.  You click when you've got the position you want, and then you click on the down arrow of the vertical scroll bar.  The screen scrolls, and you can see everything as it scrolls.  When you want it to stop, you press ESC or simply wait until it gets to the bottom of the item you're capturing.  You've then got a capture that includes just the area you want, rather than the entire width of the screen.  I use this feature a LOT.  Since the upgrade to Firefox 3.5 (now 3.5.2), I've had some problems with it, but it still works very well in Opera (up through version 6.61.02--the most recent version, 6.61.03, was an attempt to deal with the Firefox problem, and for me at least it made the feature work less well in Opera).

There's also a way to capture a window that goes beyond the screen in both width and length, but that uses a different mechanism: you specify the pixel size you want the capture to be.  For me, that sometimes takes several attempts to get the correct estimate, but at times it's worth it.

Actually, I just tried to capture the contents of the Add/Remove window using HyperSnap.  I had no problem: it scrolled through the entire long list and captured it all.  I was happy to see that, since it's further evidence for me that whatever problem I've been having with the AutoScroll Region feature in HyperSnap may be related only to its behavior with Firefox.

I'd still love to know whether Screenshot Captor can also accomplish this.

Yeah, I use Everything, but when you're in the middle of doing something and can't find it...  I knew I had opened it once via Start>All Programs and I use that so infrequently I knew there was a good chance the program would be listed in the Recently User section of the Start menu.

Ah, good point.  I've become so enamored of/dependent on Everything that it's always the first thing I think of.  In this case, clearly the Recently Used Programs section of the Start menu would have been even quicker.  Thanks for reminding me of its existence.  :)

I wouldn't get Avast. It's real-time monitoring interferes with too many programs, but maybe you should download a trial version of NOD32 or Kaspersky & give them a try?
Innuendo, can you say a bit more about the programs Avast interferes with?  If they're not programs I use, then perhaps I shouldn't rule Avast out.

I'd recommend F-Secure Client Security because it's reliable and highly configurable. If it only would consume less memory and run faster on slow machines.
Yes, but from what you say it sounds as if I'd be trading one accurate memory hog for another  ;) .

Mouser, I've just downloaded Screenshot Captor and tried to duplicate what I think you said you did, i.e., captured the entire Add/Remove Programs listing.  I selected the Grab Windows Object or Scrolling Window (CTL+SHFT+PRTSCN) option from the right-click menu.  It seemed to scroll, though I couldn't really tell because mostly what I saw was black with occasional bursts of white.  But when it finished, apparently all I had was the first panel, i.e. the part I could see with no scrolling.  However, what I wanted was for Screenshot Captor to make the Add/Remove Programs listing scroll and capture the entire list of programs.  Is that possible?  If so, how?

I should add that until now, I've always used HyperSnap for AutoScroll captures, and I especially loved its AutoScroll Region feature, which worked faster, more flexibly, and more simply than any other program I'd ever tried.  Recently, though, I've been having problems getting it to work well with Firefox (though it still works well with Opera), so I'm very interested in what Screenshot Captor can do.  I'm amazed at all its features, which I haven't really had time to explore.  But the one I'm most interested in is a way to autoscroll, and especially to autoscroll and capture a region.

Update:  To set the record straight, I'm happy to report that the developer of HyperSnap has fixed the problem I was having using AutoScroll Region with Firefox 3.5.  It now works very well again with both Firefox and Opera.

I was adding programs to the new menu and couldn't find one of them - damn developers that insist on putting their programs in a program file with a different name: one of my biggest annoyances.
Hi, Jim.  My message is not directly related to your LBC problem, but what you said about not being able to find a program with an unexpected name reminded me of many times when I've had the same problem.  I've found that the Everything search engine is often invaluable in such circumstances.  I'll ask it to search for the name by which I know the program, and even though the program may be located in a folder with a different name, there will usually be SOME file with the "right" name in the same folder.  That helps me get to the right folder, and then it's usually pretty easy to figure out which file to put into LBC.

You may have tried this already, but I thought I'd suggest it just in case.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome: Time for a Second Chance?

No, you might be thinking of LastPass - I never heard of "Fast Pass" - and LastPass indeed has won me over from Roboform. Something I didn't think would ever happen. And no, LastPass doesn't purport to support Chrome, as Chrome does not yet allow add-ons. However they DO offer bookmarklets for Chrome and Opera. I haven't tried them in Opera yet but they work very well - surprisingly well - in Chrome.
I have been using LastPass in Opera and find it works very well.  I've put it on Firefox as well, where I also have RoboForm.  Now, when I use RoboForm to log onto a website, LastPass asks whether it too should save this info.  I usually say yes, so it is then available to me when I use Opera.

McAfee is very good about not having false positives. However, it is sometimes also very good at not finding viruses and trojans. How can you know you truly have no viruses unless you have run another AV to double-check?
I agree.  I have several anti-malware programs that I run from time to time.  One of them, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro, apparently will find all kinds of viruses, trojans, and other malware.  It seems especially good at identifying stuff that slips by other AV and anti-malware programs.

Of course, another way you often can know that you have no viruses is that your computer doesn't do anything strange.  Your firewall doesn't report strange programs attempting to call out, you don't get re-routed to other pages, your homepage is stable, your hosts file isn't tampered with, etc. etc.

I wouldn't get Avast. It's real-time monitoring interferes with too many programs, but maybe you should download a trial version of NOD32 or Kaspersky & give them a try?
Thanks for the advice.  I think that's another reason I've kept McAfee: people have reported negative things about every other program I've thought about.  Avast, Avira, NOD32, Kapersky, Bit Defender....   I do value your opinion highly, though, so I'll definitely keep your warning in mind.

I am in the same boat as you with requiring roboform. It is the sole reason I do not use opera.
You might try Last Pass.  I learned about this on another thread here at DC.  I too was looking for something that works well with Opera, and I found it in Last Pass.  As the thread I cited explains, it will also work with FF, etc., and if you already have RoboForm installed, each time you use RoboForm, Last Pass will ask whether you want it to remember the info.  That makes it expecially easy to add lots of info pretty quickly.  I think I prefer RoboForm, but I'm delighted to have Last Pass as well, and I love it on Opera.  And, unlike RoboForm, Last Pass is FREE:up:
839
I'm surprised that no one mentioned Last Pass.  Great new password management tool with extensions for both IE & FF.

http:\\lastpass.com
There was some discussion of Last Pass on the earlier FF extensions thread.  That's how I learned about it, I think.  I like it a lot, though I prefer RoboForm on Firefox; I find it's somewhat more easily controllable.  I use Last Pass primarily for Opera, since Opera can't use RoboForm.  Of course, RoboForm costs $$ whereas Last Pass is free.  I suspect that if I didn't already own RoboForm, I might just decide to go with Last Pass for all my browsers.

OperaView is broken. However, I have found you a work-around. Uninstall OperaView and install IE View Lite from here:
Wow!  This works perfectly!  I'm ecstatic! Thank you VERY VERY MUCH!!
841
Thanks, Miles and Innuendo, for the info about Mr. Tech Toolkit.  As it turns out, the problem with OperaView was not maximum version compatibility.  It was set to be compatible with 3.5*.  I nonetheless uninstalled and reinstalled it.  Even version 3.5.1 accepted it just fine.  But it simply won't work in 3.5.1.  It works the first time you tell FF to open the page in Opera, but the next time, an error box pops up that says on the title [JavaScript Application] and then the message "OperaView was unable to run Opera Browser.  Check the path and try again."  It always finds it the first time, but not after that.

Innuendo, I really appreciate your detailed help on dealing with the maximum compatibility issue.  Though that turned out not to be the problem this time, I'm definitely going to save your message for the next time I need it.  I'm sure there will be a next time!
842
Maybe extension writers are getting the idea it's better to get your program to working status before a new Firefox version is finalized rather than before. I do have MR Tech Toolkit installed, but I haven't had to use it to make an extension work for a very long time.
Yes, I agree that the situation has gotten somewhat better.  However, the OperaView problem is driving me nuts.  I downloaded Mr. Tech Toolkit after seeing you and other mention it, but I wasn't able to figure out how I might use it to get the OperaView extension to work again.  I'd love to know.
843
I've installed Opera quite a few times, but I always find the Opera browsing environment stifling. I guess I just don't do things the "Opera workflow" way. Couple that with the fact that the author is so militant about providing any sort of way for add-ons/extensions and I will just stick with Firefox.
Firefox is my default browser, but I was surprised to find that a number of the things that I needed extensions to accomplish in Firefox could be done in Opera without needing an extension (e.g., Paste and Go; Open this page in IE; Open this page in FF) or could be done with what are essentially extensions (AdBlock for Opera, FlashBlock for Opera).  I do agree that extensions give Firefox more customizability, but they're vulnerable each time there's an upgrade. I was very frustrated, for example, to find that the "OperaView" extension that I use a lot in Firefox stopped working when FF moved to 3.5.1.  Back in the days when I used Powermarks, I used to hold my breath each time there was a FF upgrade, since the Powermarks extension usually took a little while to catch up.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help capture video from a website

Though you've already found a way to capture the video, I might mention one that worked recently for me: the free version of CamStudio worked very well.

I often must refresh the tab with DC loaded - a "fresh" page reload, bypassing the cache. Been like that for at least a year now. Sometimes even if I have cleared the cache at the start of the day DC loads like that for me. Something in your CSS mouser that is definitely different than other sites, as I have never encountered this in other forums.
Well, just to provide more feedback to mouser, I've never had this happen on the DC site.  I can't recall its happening anywhere, but I'm not sure.  But I am sure I haven't seen it with the DC site.  I'm using Firefox 3.5.1 (on WinXP Pro), but I've also viewed DC in the past with 3.0.x, 3.5, etc.  I do have problems with Firefox, but not this one and not on DC.
846
If you are using a sophisticated form fill app then it's not for you.  But if you use Opera Wand and want to make it a bit more secure without a lot of hassle, you are welcome to use RunOperaWand
Hi, Miles.  I'm not sure whether you wrote this in response to what I said or just in general, but I thought I'd mention that I don't use Opera's Wand and in fact don't use any automatic form filler with any browser.  If I did, I'd certainly want security features like the one you've created.
847
A lot of people love LastPass, but I started using AI Roboform a long, long, long time before LastPass existed. I've never bothered trying LastPass as Roboform works well for me. If I ever run into something I want to do that Roboform won't I will give LastPass a try.
I use RoboForm and am very happy with it, but I was delighted to discover LastPass (thanks to this forum) because RoboForm doesn't work on Opera.  Though Firefox is my default browser, I keep going back and forth between FF and Opera.  Opera is much quicker, and I have problems using Firefox at a number of blog sites and at least one forum site where, intermittently, I can't get the cursor to go inside a comment/response box with Firefox.  I don't have this problem with Opera.  Since I do use Opera a fair amount, I am delighted that LastPass works so well with it.

I'm just curious what you prefer about CintaNotes.  I ask as a CintaNotes user myself who was somewhat interested by the posting about QuotePad.  The two programs seem quite similar at first glance.

Gee, I thought I was being hyper by asking Website Watcher to check a site every five minutes!  ;D

I don't know of software that will check more frequently than every ten seconds.  I don't mean to pry (well, actually, I guess I do), but why would you want to do that?
850
If you have a version of WSW that includes the AutoWatch feature, you can set specific sites to be monitored as frequently as once a minute.  That might have some impact on your system if you have a lot of bookmarks that you want to check that frequently, but the point is that how quickly WSW picks up changes depends on how you set up AutoWatch.  Unfortunately, beginning with version 5, WSW no longer included AutoWatch in its least expensive version, a real loss.
