Living Room / Re: Article: The Economics of Open Source Donations
« Last post by housetier on January 16, 2008, 06:04 PM »
Only 2 people have ever donated to one of my projects. I admit I didn't ask very aggressively because I doubt it would have helped. The projects is not well known, and has received no press coverage ever. At the same time I do not want to complain too much, because the costs (as in cash money) of keeping that project up are very small.

I wish more people would donate to dc.com so we wouldn't even need to ask them via the fundraisers. We would still need to thank them and tell them what it was spent on... But for the time being we must ask them to donate it seems.

Lashiec it is for real. And I am glad I was in this system for one year only; I never understood what them highschoolers liked about it. While they made the popular ones even more popular, outsiders where pushed to the side, and eventually over the edge...

I am so glad we don't have "ranks", every user's opinion is taken into account (if they care to voice it of course). I truly believe that dc.com is close to perfection, but not too close ;) If it were to close we might reach perfection and any change after that would make it worse.

Anyway, that article got me thinking about my peer project and how I might make it more attractive to new user while at the same time keep the current ones.

Post New Requests Here / Re: idea: Application to turn off a laptop's display.
« Last post by housetier on January 16, 2008, 05:43 PM »
I am sure turning off the display will make the battery last longer.

I couldn't find the Satellite 205 on toshiba-europe.com nor in the online shop from which my boss buys all the gear we use and sell.

Usually, there is a tiny switch near the "fold". This switch is pressed down by the lid's frame when it is closed. On most operating systems this should also send a signal to put the hardware in standby or suspend mode to save energy. In your case, we first need to find this tiny plastic lever, and then keep the operating system running normally when it is pressed.

Nonetheless a very good essay. I shall see what other essays the site's feed will bring.

General Software Discussion / Re: TweakGuides.com - Firefox Tweak Guide

It is a theme for firefox, named littlefox; the dark colors come from my gtk-theme. I like littlefox because it is ery complete, it themes all the dialog windows and even stumbleupon.

There is also a similar theme for thunderbird, called minibird.

What I really like in Firefox (and Opera) are keyword searches: whenever you see a search form, right-click on the input field and select "Add a Keyword for this Search":

keysearch.png

Then you give it a name and a keyword: name_search.png

After this you can enter "dc whatever" in the address bar of the browser to search the forum for whatever. I use it mostly for google, domain lookups, and translations via dict.cc

Living Room / Re: Nerdarts.com - When nerds become cool, do jocks become nerds?

Us nerds are the rulers of tomorrow: we are the only ones to control the technology that we created. And since we are goodhearted people humanity has not to fear us :D

I am a very proud nerd myself: http://nrrd.de/

Oh yes, a very good point there Gothi[c]!

If possible, users should try to access websites via https, especially when they are transmitting sensitive data. This includes passwords, credit card numbers, your SSN; basically anything that a website asks for to identify you.

There are numerous websites I haven't signed up with because they don't let me use https; gulli.com for example reserves use of https for admins and moderators.

And if you don't have a choice, like on my website, make sure you use a unique password, so I can't break into you other sites and services.

Living Room / Secured Access to Forum
« Last post by housetier on January 14, 2008, 07:33 AM »
I just saw it is possible to access dc.com via https. While I think this is absolutely terrific, my favorite webbrowser does not like the fact that some content is not transmitted via https. So far I have added an exception for dc.com so firefox will accept the certificate. Also the certificate does not seem to be signed by a Certificate Authority (CA) such as CAcert.org.

The red font indicates something: red-adddress-bar.png

Also, the lock symbol is "broken": broken-lock.png

And when I look at the details, I see why the address is red and the lock is broken: partial-encrpytion.png

CAcert is a CA whose certificates are free, which is why its competitor fight hard so software vendors won't include their Root Certificates into products...

cacert300x120.png

There are instructions how to get a certificate signed by CAcert. Then users only need to import (and trust) the Root Certificate from CAcert: PEM format seems to be right for most browsers except Internet Explorer.

If dc.com could get a server certificate from, say, verisign, users would not have to do anything; however, these certificates usually cost money. I know all this is a hassle, but in this day and age security, protection, or trust don't come easy...

There is GPG4win now which ought to make using GnuPG on Windows easier.
838
I want to remind people that you can use GnuPG (or PGP) for several purposes besides protecting your emails: you can sign documents too, or encrypt important files.

pagebull is great for re-discovering websites. The textual information usually changes quickly but the look and feel doesn't, so it's easy to spot "your" site with all the screenshots.

I was going to suggest mantis as well.

There is also mercurial, a distributed revision control system. It might seem strange, but none of my friends have regretted using it so far.

I particularly like "Filesize: 39" :-)

Other than that, I don't need it but I understand their claims of the capabilities of the program.

At work I have a simple sticky notes applet in my panel, here I only keep track of work-related todos. For almost everything else I use my irc bot, which has per user and per channel todo lists.

Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by housetier on January 04, 2008, 06:42 AM »
Naturally some will want to be on the safe side and just tag all their posts as potentially offensive. ...but maybe not on dc.com; I have seen this at other places though: once such a system is established, people rebel and start gaming the system.

I say: go ahead and try but don't expect it to work. There will be collateral damage (such a great term) one way or the other: either we have users who are offened by posts and stop participating, or we have users who feel restricted and stop participating. I have decided for myself to watch and see where this is going, but I hope a better solution than those 2 alternatives will be found!

And pausing to think a little because the boss was so happy about his geek clock in the vista sidebar, it might be good to not decide too quickly. We should ask for more input from people who haven't spoken up yet. This is not a veteran's meeting, this is donationcoder where everyone participates.

Now I just read jgpaiva's reply: Does it mean it's been decided to implement a tagging system of sorts?

Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by housetier on January 04, 2008, 06:25 AM »
I am willing to accept tags if it can be made so I will not see them, will not hindered by them. If that means all my posts will be auto-tagged nsfw, I am willing to accept that as well.

It is I who decides what to look at, it is I who decides what I like!

If you start tagging and categorizing, I do not want to see a part of it. I will respect others in that they might decide to ignore all my posts, because I think we are all sensible people and can decide for ourselves. I know I want to decide for myself.

Respect can not be asked for, it must be given. And another proverb: We cannot please everybody. That said, I respect Trucker for expressing his views; but I want respect too: for my opposing views.

I do not like this thread though...

I have had my fair share of bad purchases as well. Ever since my income declined so drastically, I went to borrow books from the public libraries. Also I read much more ebooks these days.

If I have the chance I take a peek before buying or borrowing a book, be it technical, educational, or entertanational: "introduction to python", "mega-magnetism", "generation degeneration".

Read before you buy!

And one more follow-up: there is an OTR-plugin for psi as well.
