General Software Discussion / Re: First looks at OpenOffice 3.1
« Last post by fenixproductions on March 04, 2009, 04:35 PM »
It is interesting that you single out OO Draw for improvement - MSO doesn't even have a draw feature!
-Carol Haynes (March 04, 2009, 04:23 AM)
And OO does not have mail client. We can quarrel and say: MS has Visio and OO - Thunderbird.

I think that Draw is the worst part of OO but it pushed me into Inkscape's side (and Scribus a little bit). Maybe that was its creator idea at the first place?

I can't also get one thing off my head when it comes to Draw: a sentence that when 3 pretty girls go to party they always take ugly one with them... ;)

Why no just use Open Office Portable 3.0.1 - doesn't do anything to your system - just unzip and run.
For me it loads slower than standard version and I can't just use Enter on files. At least last issue will no longer be valid with TC 7.5 :)

First 3.x release removed all associations from 2.x too (I had to restored them manually) but newer updates did nothing wrong. Well.. they did nothing at all with assocs. I've deleted DOC filetype from my system and nothing changed after upgade  :o.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Comparer
« Last post by fenixproductions on February 26, 2009, 01:21 PM »
Comparer 1.0.6.0  and ComparerCmd 0.0.6.0 are out.

The main change is replacing internal plugins handling engine with external DLL (wdx_proxy) written by Franck8244.
Thanks to this step few more plugins work with my tool.

I have also uploaded Extended pack which contains:
- Comparer and ComparerCmd tools,
- Office 2007 plugin - for viewing MS Office 2007 files properties,
- SVGwdx plugin - for viewing SVG images properties,
- xPDFSearch plugin - for PDF files properties (by Lefteous).

Check Web.Config file, there should be something like this inside:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. <connectionStrings>
  2. <add name="MyTestBase" connectionString="Data Source=SQL2005.HostedWindows.pl;Initial Catalog=myowndb;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=XXX;Password=YYY" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
  3. </connectionStrings>

Moving database hosting from one server to another should require changing connection strings only. This "trick" worked for me twice :)

I recommend to take a look here:

I was testing it for a week and forgot about it very quickly. As far as it might be great for notes, it is not usable for folders. I've never understood why should I have couple explorer's windows open all of the time for quick folders jumping. It was more efficient for me to have bookmarks in my file manager.

BTW Some parts of their site seems to be down so take a look here:
http://www.softpedia...creenshot-21853.html

Their idea is great but not for multiple types tabs. It is cluttering desktop too much.

Last time I've checked it had no screen size preservation what means: all tabs on top of other windows. It might sound great but if you want more than five of them on top of the screen (1280x1024 here), they will cover your application's title bar completely or:
- scrollbars - if on the right,
- Opera's panels - if you use Opera and have Stick on left,
- taskbar - if on the bottom.

Living Room / Re: What if Google ate it's own dog food?
« Last post by fenixproductions on February 20, 2009, 06:00 AM »
I often suspect that Google's extreme secrecy about the internals of their search engine algorithm is less about keeping people from "gaming the system" and more about hiding just how simple minded and arbitrary it is.

I am still writing "dirty code" but when I had started with programming it was looking even worse and I have never been able to understand "what, the hell, I've been thinking" ;)

Maybe in Google's case it's the same? Maybe it's not simple code but very, very ugly one? They might think: "Why I put THAT? What does it suppose to do? Why? What? How? ... OK. It is still working so I will not touch that!" :)

Looks like this "ruler" is not working correctly ;)

Since when 2.7 x 23 = 61?
-fenixproductions (February 15, 2009, 05:16 PM)

Well, it does claim "Two-digit precision or less".

In that case it's better to learn Mental_arithmetic instead.

The only way is to compare "feeling" only by creating alternative profile (starting Firefox with -profilemanager parameter). IIRC adding new profile gives clear account without any extensions. I did it couple of times in the past and that is one of the reasons for using Opera :)

Living Room / Re: Crazy brits crossing railroads
« Last post by fenixproductions on February 13, 2009, 01:19 PM »
Nothing new for me to see*. Really: if someone is willing to commit suicide why should I be worried? The only situation I might care is mother with child because kid in not in fault.

*) I had job located 30 minutes from my home by walk, with railroads crossing somewhere in the middle. Such "shows" were seen daily. once I saw "comic" situation: 8 year old (?) boy shouting to his daddy to not cross the rail.

After an hour of testing I must say: not so bad. Judging from the look I've expected no options and confusing navigation but interface appeared to be usable. Messages in tabs are also great.

Unfortunately, few things are not for me (I couldn't find solution for them):
- how to switch off web search panel on right,
- how to switch off HTML messages view and get everything as text only,
- "Check default mail client at start-up" option ON but it neither told me about TheBat! nor replaced associations,
- replies on the top (how I hate it).

export: couldn't find anything about it anywhere or about how mail is saved/stored (format)
Plain text in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\<Application Data>\Postbox\Profiles\<something>\Mail\<account>\<Inbox>

where:
- <user> - your system name,
- <Application Data> - can be localised (Dane Aplikacji for Polish Windows),
- <something> - some key generated by Postbox,
- <account> - your account's addres; here it is "pop.gmail.com", but it may vary,
- <Inbox> - plain text file without extension.
847
Before I'll test I have to ask:
does it allow you to reply below quoted e-mail or above?

"Conversation views" screenshot gives me bad feelings about the second possibility.

I will try that app but I think I am TheBat! addicted already ;) Also an interface might be "too Mac" for me (judging from screenshots).

General Software Discussion / Re: diff for RTF files, please?

WinMerge is decent, but go with pretty much any of the others instead of it.
Nothing is better than constructive criticism ;)

I've never tried any payware longer than trial licence allowed but for me WinMerge appeared to be the best from free.

WinMerge on my machine works well with RTF files thanks to xdocdiff plugin.

Check default font settings for your system (for all windows / menus in "Display Settings") and for your browsers.

This issue looks like problem with MS Sans Serif which should be replaced with Microsoft Sans Serif. Similar names but look&feel is very different.
