General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 10

Last night, I sent an email message to the company asking how long the 40% discount offer will last.

Jeez - what's up with the following a rational, logical way to get an answer to this?  Now we can't speculate wildly.

Does this differ significantly from Sobell's other distro-specific admin books?  Specifically, I had (probably still have somewhere) one of the "Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux" editions.

Speak of the Devil: this  book (Sobell's Ubuntu edition) is today's (2 May 2011) "$10 ebook deal of the day" on InformIt:

Informit's ebooks are generally (but I don't think always) DRM-free.

I guess I'm wondering if this is essentially the same book, but with information presented in a distribution neutral manner instead of targeted to Ubuntu?  Or does this this book really present fundamentally different information (or the same information in a fundamentally different way)?  Basically, if I have the Ubuntu book, is there any reason I should even take a look at this book?

Hell, I wish I could get more spam that said: "Hay man, nice job, keep up the good work!".

But oh no, I just get the spam that says I need:
A Quality Replica Rolex, a Russian Bride, and a larger longer lasting weenie.

wished for spam: Keep up the good work...

actual spam: larger, longer lasting...

I think you've got your wish!

But my gut tells me that there is a real "cost" to living in an age where so much effort is being put into disguising the real costs of the things we consume.  And a penalty we are going to pay for accepting it as just the way things are done.

FWIW, I think you're right about this.

I've worked with someone who used an exercise ball at their desk.

One day it burst while he was sitting on it and he landed on the floor pretty hard.  It was one of the funniest things I've seen; I'm just glad he wasn't hurt (physically anyway).  I still chuckle a bit when I think about it.

JetBrains does good work; their stuff is worth checking out (as Renegade said), even if you ultimately decide it's not to your liking.  The one thing their IDE's do that drives me crazy is make it difficult to do 'non project' file operations.  For example (I'm not sure if these apply to all their IDEs), you can't open an arbitrary text file in the editor, you can only open files that are part of the project; you can't "Save as...", you have to use a refactoring menu option to rename a file.

As irritating as these things are to me at times, I still use their IDEs for the small amount of Ruby-related work I do and sometimes for PHP work.

nice story 40hz!

Only in retrospect. That reprimand set the tone for the rest of my tenure with that company. I got passed over for a promotion twice because of it.

Moral: Next time you think of something really clever to pull at work: Don't.  :-\

Ouch!

I'll often scan a EULA to get details on the vendor's policy for allowing multiple computer/single user use (or not allowing it), when I can't get that cleared up on the the vendor's website.  I still might not have gotten to the discount, since the answer to my question is in item (c).

Now I have to find out what RadioBOSS is...  Doesn't sound like something that even a 40% discount would make me bite.

By the way, a sometimes I've done something similar with documents I write for work.  When sending them out for review, I put in a line of text saying, "If you're the first reviewer to mention this sentence, I'll buy you lunch."  I'd say about half the time, I get called on it.  I can't remember where i got the idea - I think it was at my first 'real' job at a transit/traffic consulting firm where someone did this.

Wow - I've never heard of Exxon Information Systems, Vydec, Qwip, or Qyx.

I like those last 3 company names  (but I imagine they'd be a marketing/communications nightmare).  Reminds me of the Quisp cereal I used to eat as a kid.

quisp-cereal.jpg

Reminds me about work I did THIS WEEK that is just making that a reality.

Just now getting the Internet down there, are you?
837
I don't know if this will help anyone narrow this down (or just add noise to the data), but I often have trouble downloading large files in Firefox or IE at work (no errors reported, just incomplete files after the download finishes). When that happens I use wget which has yet to have a problem.

That's an indication to me that the problem is the browser's fault, but what do I know?

Anyway, if someone here has these issues downloading in the browser, it might shed some light here if they find whether or not wget is more reliable.

Living Room / Re: Hats off to USPS for innovative tracking scheme...
« Last post by mwb1100 on April 10, 2011, 07:57 PM »
Well, I'm going to go against the conventional wisdom here...  I'm actually a fan of USPS, and will opt for it over UPS or FedEx ground if I'm given the choice - I find it's faster and generally much cheaper. And they deliver on Saturday (though I expect that might be something that goes away sometime in the next few years as a cost cutting measure).

However, I'll admit that I don't expect their tracking for non-express packages to be of much use (maybe the the tracking is helpful if a shipment gets lost?), and I certainly can't say what their international shipping record might be like.

My only regret is that Alan Turing isn't alive today as he proved mathematically that all computers (however large and complex) are all functionally equivalent to a "Turing Machine". If he had patented it and sued MS and Apple tactics he would now wipe the flaw with all computer manufacturers.

Holy christmas, Carol...
That war positivitably Joycean!

Wait... I'm a bit Chris-crossed.

"Microsoft filed a legal brief late today arguing that the court shouldn't require it to offer "clear and convincing evidence" to overcome the traditional presumption that patents approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are valid."

This sounds to me like it might be a good thing as far as being able to help overturn unworthy patents (and therefore would be something that most software-patent-haters would like), or am I misreading this?  I know that when it comes to legal stuff, the devil is in the details, and the initial appearance of a ruling or law doesn't necessarily indicate the actual effect.

Nice marketing blurb - Amazon should pay you for that one!

Probably trying to weigh himself down so he won't fly off the windshield wiper while Mouser's tooling around town.
843
Wow.  As much as I agree with Mouser's position on false positives, I'm pretty impressed with Sunbelt's taking full responsibility and just flat-out apologizing.  Nowadays, it seems most 'apologies' are really not:

And from an anonymous posting (that I haven't verified - if someone out there has VIPRE or Spyware Dr., it would be interesting to see if this is true):

Go try this... create a windows\sl directory then run spyware doctor or vipre... run a scan.. they will report you are infected with the same keylogger... they are simply triggering on the existance of an "sl" directory and the author of original post didn't do ANY research on this.. he just assumed Spyware Dr. was correct and then wrote about it.

Samsung's response:  http://www.samsungtomorrow.com/1071

The statements that Samsung installs keylogger on R525 and R540 laptop computers are false.

Our findings indicate that the person mentioned in the article used a security program called VIPRE that mistook a folder created by Microsoft’s Live Application for a key logging software, during a virus scan.

it is one of those online tools of which I spoke.  While that is usually acceptable for me, this young couple is on a data-capped connection, so online services are, for the most part, anathema to them.

You can pull JSLint down to run locally: https://github.com/d...glascrockford/JSLint

I'm not sure how easy it would be to set up.

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 23, 2011, 04:40 PM »
Registered Ashampoo customers can right now have PowerArchiver 2010 Pro (launched December 13, 2010) for merely $8, normal price $(35 ÷25%)

I'm a fan of PowerArchiver. For some reason WinRAR's interface didn't click with me, and back when I bought PA, 7Zip didn't have the encryption capability I needed (I think that now it might).

Lifetime upgrades for personal licenses.  Fantastic support in the forums.

Note that they're beta-testing PA 2011 right now, and they're about to change the feature mix for standard/pro/toolbox (toolbox is the new 'kitchen sink' package of features).  For 2011 the 'Pro' version will miss some features that are in the 2010 Pro version (those features are moving to the Toolbox package).  However, if you have a 2010 Pro license, you'll be upgraded to a '2011 Pro Legacy' license that keeps those features intact - essentially you'll get a 2011 Toolbox license without the BitDefender AV license that they're bundling in Toolbox for some reason (which I personally have no need for anyway).

http://www.powerarch...iver-2011-whats-new/

I assume that the standard upgrade policy also applies to the Ashampoo offer, but you might want to double check.

Bummer, I didn't see this until now.

It's still running - they're running the promo until they hit $200K (they're at $180K at the moment).

Here's a twist...

You're standing around somewhere when someone nearby snaps a picture of some of their friends and you're in the background doing something. You do not own the copyright in the image... Now suppose the composition has some sort of unique quality like being funny or whatever, and you play a significant role in that. It goes viral or is used commercially.

Is that a problem?

Well, here's a small discussion about how someone's photo from Flickr was used in a Virgin Mobile ad campaign, and the photographer and the person in the photo weren't too happy about it:
