I don't know if I understood exactly what you wanted to replace, but in Notepad++ maybe something along the lines of replace
([^\?]+)\?([^&]+).*
with
http://\1?\2
(make sure regular expression is ticked).

I.e. grab everything up to the first ? on the line and store that in \1, grab everything after that and up to the first & and put that in \2, match the rest of the line to get that removed.

General Software Discussion / Re: SpiderOak - very nice people =)

I don't want to stick with a company that doesn't tell the truth (i.e. : Dropbox), but... I can't fully switch to Spideroak yet if uploading a 20k file and being able to access it through my handheld sometimes takes more than 5 min (between the time the file is changed and the time it's finally accessible on my handheld).

Anybody else is seeing that kind of slowness ? With Dropbox, it's almost instantaneous.

The upload speeds have varied a lot for me. The other day I backed up 500 MB to SO and that took an entire afternoon which was abysmal. The network health bar was in the low end the entire time. Today 13 small files had changed, and the 5 MB upload took ~1 minute, and after that it was stuck on "finalizing" the upload for 50 minutes -- I guess the servers were not responding.

I really like SO and many of the design choices they have made. And the contact I have had with their support people has been great -- you actually get a human response from a qualified person who reads what you wrote (I know that should be the norm, but sadly that is a pleasant surprise these days). So I agree with the topic of this thread, they do seem to be very nice people .

It just somehow feels more rough around the edges when you compare it to CrashPlan as a backup service or DropBox/SugarSync as a share/sync service.

Btw, totally offtopic, anyone tried Wuala?

Thanks, no mention of that in the FAQ or user manual even though apparently it's been there since 2009:

At least it's in the application .

I am trying out SpiderOak at the moment with the free 2 GB account, and I think there are a lot of things to like about it.

I love the zero-knowledge policy. Being able to encrypt the data on your machine with your own key before it gets sent to the server was one of my reasons for choosing CrashPlan, so I am happy to see this in SpiderOak as well.

I am not sure it's entirely fair to compare SpiderOak to DropBox. DropBox focuses on easily sharing a single folder across multiple machines, whereas SpiderOak (and SugerSync for that matter) are somewhere in between DropBox and backup services like CrashPlan.

DropBox is so easy to use that anybody can figure it out, but you pay for that simplicity with less security and flexibility. SpiderOak can provide syncing as well, but having to first back up the folders on each machine and then setup a sync between them is just way more complicated.

It has decent support for working as a backup solution as well, but lacks stuff like being able to run when idle, scheduled backups, running as a service, backing up more than the current users data, etc. that you get with a dedicated backup solution like CrashPlan.

SpiderOak seems to be based on some really good ideas, and with a little more work it could end up being a great replacement for both types of applications -- if they added something like the "Magic Briefcase" from SugerSync to give people an easy initial sync folder, and decent idle/time scheduling like CrashPlan :).

On a side note, I think they should consider making a small tray application to show some basic info and allow you to launch the full GUI, because while the backup engine is only using around 30 MB of memory here at the moment, the GUI uses 70 MB minimized to the tray doing nothing.

I am beginning to think CintaNotes falls into this category as well.

That is a rather sizable portion of data :D.

I don't know if breaking it up into backup sets might help. I have one set for my work which has the highest priority, one for images, one for user folders and one for other stuff.

That sounds like a bit much .

Here it sits at around 40 MB, but like mentioned I have it set to use 0% cpu while I'm present and 80% when I'm away (gone for more than 5 mins). I have no idea what it uses when I'm not at the keyboard, and don't really care much as long as it doesn't bother me while I am here working :-[.

The annoying thing is that it is already being reported on other sites as if it were a fact and not just an accusation, for instance Blue's News links it simply as "Samsung installs keylogger on its laptops".

Edit: I guess they got that from this blog post on networkworld where the author changed the wording.

Jibz, how long have you been using CrashPlan? How much data do you backup with it? Do you have the Family version?

I've been using it for about 2 months now, backing up 20 GB of data. Now that all the data is uploaded, I got it set to only perform backup when I've been away from the computer for 5 mins.

I chose not to get the family plan due to the way it works like one account. I was planning to use it on our laptop as well, but I don't want that to have access to all the files on this machine. So I went with the one unlimited license and then I can buy a separate 10 GB one for the laptop if needed.

Nice review .

I ended up using CrashPlan as well. A couple of the points that got me to choose it were:

  • You can choose to encrypt the backup data locally with your own password before upload, so only you can access it (meaning the company has no way to look at your files). Some of the others only support secure upload, but the files are encrypted on their servers by them with a key they have access to.
  • Even though the backup service uses a bit of memory while performing backups, the perceived impact on my fairly slow computer has been minimal -- I simply do not notice it running
  • With CrashPlan+ you get online backup and also local backup to a removable drive and/or to a friends machine in one piece of software

A few things I've noticed that you might want to be aware of in choosing CrashPlan:

  • If you choose the family plan, there is no separation of the users, so all the computers will have access to the files backed up from others
  • Having access to the restore interface appears to give you read access to any file on the computer since the backup service runs as system and can backup any file which you can then restore. It is possible to restrict access to the application with a password though

Sorry to hear about the demise of the cute animal though.

Think it's once again because the price is $29 outside Europe and €29 inside, and the euro is 30% more than the dollar. Add VAT on top of that and you have to pay quite a lot more if you're in Europe :o.

I tried RSSOwl at some point, but since it's Java based it was slower and took up comparatively much memory as I remember it.

Please note that on current computers you likely won't notice it, but since mine is a bit older, stuff like that actually matters :-[.

Check out the latest version.   :)

Thanks .

The control showing the location on the main dialog appears not to be high enough, at least when I enter the city name "Århus", the small circle above the 'A' is not showing.

I think this is a limitation of Yahoo! Weather since they don't have the circle on the full forecast page either.

Ah I see. I thought the location name you entered when adding the weather ID was what was displayed there, but I can see it is the name you get from yahoo instead.

Is there a start minimized option somewhere?

Would it be possible to show sunrise and sunset in 24h format (or whatever the local way is)?

I am using FeedDemon as well. As much as I object to the license roller coaster it has been through, it is one of the best readers I have tried.

Some years ago the adds the free version shows would have made me run away screaming, but today I am not really that bothered by it.

I am sure they are just busy fixing stuff in the beta .. it feels like it's a small company, so I am not complaining or anything, I just found it amusing that they made such a rather bold statement in an automated reply :D.

From their FAQ:

Pagico uses web technologies to render its user interface, and server technologies to handle your actions in the software. Therefore, there is a web server running behind the scene to handle everything.

I wanted to give Pagico a spin as well after reading about it here and seeing how neat it looked on their homepage.

Unfortunately the beta version 5 did not work on my computer, whenever it got to the point of loading a database it just locked up. I sent an e-mail describing the problem, and got an automated response saying in part

During regular business hours, it normally takes less than 2 hours (5 minutes in most cases) to get a response from us, and for holidays, it will be slightly longer but definitely no more than 48 hours.

I thought I would share that line, since it has now been a week since I got it :-[.

Anyway, I installed v4 instead and that seems to work ok. It felt a bit odd it has to run a web server on your computer in order to work, but there is much to like about the interface I think, and I kind of like the easy way it ties together contacts and events.

Has there been no word on the effect this policy change will have on existing license holders? If they're not saying anything, maybe anyone who bought a license prior to Dec 2008 (or so, I'm guesstimating here) will continue to enjoy lifetime upgrades... Has anyone written to them yet? If not, I'm game...

If you're up to it, then I think that would be great.

Jibz: on win-rar.com perhaps, but not rarlabs.com which I've always used.

Since, like it says at the bottom of the page at rarlab.com

win.rar GmbH - the official publisher for RARLAB products - handles all support, marketing and sales related to WinRAR and www.rarlab.com.

I fear that difference is merely cosmetic. And as mentioned, they appear to have removed all mention of the free upgrades for life from both sites.

Yep, does seem like they might want to pull the plug on lifetime licenses; can't say I blame them, but it's a bit sad nonetheless. If they pull the free upgrades, I'm moving to 7-zip, it's mature enough by now imho.

Yeah, I might have to do that too. 7-Zip does seem like the best bet at the moment, even though I dislike the GUI (been a while since I used that last though, could have changed).
