Yeah, I see this as a positive move for Steam. I've never known a company worse at customer service/support than Steam. Well, except for Google.

Ever tried finding a contact for Facebook...and getting them to answer?  That is a feat still undefeated.

Deathspawner writes:
Despite all of its competition, Valve's Steam service remains the most popular digital PC game store around. While Steam does do a lot of things right, it can sometimes stumble in the worst of ways. Look no further than April's Skyrim mod debacle as a good example. Well, just as Valve fixed up that issue, it's gone ahead and fixed another: it's making refunds dead simple. While refunds have been possible in the past, it's required gamers to jump through hoops to get them. Now, Valve has set certain criteria for granting a refund, no questions asked: if you've bought the game within the past two weeks and played it for two hours or less, your refund is guaranteed.
The changes are being welcomed by most, but not all: some developers of smaller games that take less time to play through are worried that this will lead to abuse, and the system may enable more risk-free review-bombing as well.

By the way, I am sure PC/hardware manufacturers are thrilled MS is giving people reason to keep their current systems  :P

I'm sure most companies will simply upgrade all their old stock to Windows 10 and try sell it as something new and fantastic to people who don't have a clue :p

I think the "exposure compensation" sim is pretty cool
where's that one? (do you mean the -2 to +2 scale?)

There's no possible way to expose correctly if the ambient light is reduced to, say, bright indoors, and it's got out-of-date profiles for high-ISO noise. A modern DSLR would do much better at high ISO. It'd be nice to have multiple example images, and if I paid for it I'd want different lenses and flashes.

It doesnt seem to show noise at all as a factor in the result (?)
I think it's just meant as a basic learn about how ISO, shutter, & aperature interact with each other - and as such is quite good I find.

For a PC though, as you say, you'd definitely want more for your 10 dollars.

Lol, shows how much attention I paid to it...I didn't even realize it costs anything!  ;D

I was going through my "Looking Back - Memories" thing on Facebook which shows you what you posted "On this day in previous years" and I came across this link from 2011.

http://camerasim.com...ps/camera-simulator/

Evidently, the site is still active and it still looks pretty cool!

DSLR Camera Simulator.png

I would embed the actual thing here but since I can't use HTML tags, I can't :P

Certainly worth a look if you want to know more about what sort of functions each option does :) - They give you some snippets of info on each control:

DSLR sim controls:
Lighting

Lighting is the single biggest determinant of how your camera needs to be set. With only a few exceptions, you can never have too much light. Use this slider to experiment with different indoor and outdoor lighting conditions.

Distance

Use this slider to simulate how close or far you are in relation to the subject.

Focal length

Moving this slider is the same as zooming in and out with your lens. A wide, zoomed out setting creates the greatest depth of field (more things are in focus) while zooming in creates a shallower depth-of-field (typically just the subject will be in focus).

Mode

The exposure modes of an SLR let you control one setting while the camera automatically adjusts the others. In Shutter Priority mode, you to set the shutter speed while the camera sets the aperture/f-stop. In Aperture Priority mode, you set the aperture/f-stop while the camera sets the shutter speed. Manual mode is fully manual—you’re on your own! Refer to the camera’s light meter to help get the proper exposure. Although every real SLR camera has a “fully automatic” mode, there is not one here—what’s the fun in that?

Windows 10 pricing If you’re not upgrading, it’ll cost up to $199  Ars Technica

From the above link:
As previously announced, upgrades from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 are free for the first year of availability.

Gotta love ambiguous statements...Does that mean if you upgrade within a year of release...it's free.......or does it mean tha a year after upgrading I will be stuck paying them however much?

The whole thing is becoming more confusing lol...although, I am 99% sure it is simply free if you upgrade within a year (With no sudden "pay us $X" at the end of it)

My everyone jumped on that one immediately! I hope everyone is still so excited when they get it installed.

I wouldn't say "Excited" would be the term to describe myself...Cautiously optimistic maybe.
-Stephen66515 (June 01, 2015, 05:29 PM)

You were certainly interested enough to reply immediately.

It's tech news...I love tech news, so of course I am going to reply to one of the biggest tech news stories of the week.

I have seen the offer on Windows 7 - but not on Windows 8.1, where I would actually consider updating...

Just popped up on my Win 8.1 box during the day. I went ahead and opted in, I have full image backups. :-)

Hm, may need them. The box popped back up and after digging in it says the AMD Radeon HD 7660D video is "not fully compatible - you'll experience problems with your display."

That is not good. That's the on-motherboard junk that is working well enough for my two monitor system, but I already tried to replace it with an add-in R7750 card and the box just squawked at me. I better look into this again...

Had a few friends say they have not got the notification on Windows 7 yet, but it popped up for me and my Mrs at the exact same time (Although, both laptops are same make/model/spec/OS/update version - Only difference is software installed).

I was just reading about that here:

Feature deprecation section

  • If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center and you install Windows 10, Windows Media Center will be removed.
  • Watching DVDs requires separate playback software
  • Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10.
  • Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.
  • Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts Games that come pre-installed on Windows 7 will be removed as part of installing the Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft has released our version of Solitaire and Minesweeper called the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.”
  • If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver from Windows Update or from the manufacturer's website.
  • If you have Windows Live Essentials installed on your system, the OneDrive application is removed and replaced with the inbox version of OneDrive.

The data loss is the one thing that isn't really covered in much detail and is the one thing that is being asked the most.  The things on your list Deo...if they are all that will be wiped, don't really matter all that much :P

As a side question...in terms of coding for Windows 10...has much changed?  Can we still use the same processes as in Windows 7/8?  Will we still be allowed to download software from outside the Windows Store?  Will the OS still bullshit people and tell them because you are not installing from a "Verified Publisher" that it was probably a virus...and then deletes the installer for you? (Seriously...that annoys me more than anything else on Windows recently...Having my OWN software blocked by my own OS then being told I am not trusted and probably trying to release viruses...)

Ok fair enough --
but do note that the buttons currently do show on every page on the site (including non-forum pages); they are at bottom of sidebar on other pages.  The Like button does link to the main donationcoder facebook page that you and stephen have wonderfully created for us.

Hey, all I did was set it up...App is the one who made it look AWESOME!  I barely actually contributed anything to the design aspect of the Facebook Page, I simply post stuff on it xD

I certainly didn't want to come across as trolling or baiting (Although I don't see how I did? )

Reading back on what I wrote, I can see I may have been a little more blunt than I would normally be...however, this is kind of going off-topic now so, I shall hold my hands up and admit I could have probably worded it a lot better than I did (Those who know me know I have been guilty of wording things rather badly several times in the past!!).

"I'm open to adding some very subtle extra button somewhere that pops up a menu"

You mean like the one that used to be on DC...the one that nobody used?  Oh yeah...they didn't use it because it was VERY SUBTLE and NOBODY KNEW IT WAS THERE!

Mouser, you know me, and you know I will be straight up honest with you...You need to accept change...DC is 10 years old...but stop acting like everything is still as it were back then...it is 2015...accept change or be left behind in the dust...DC needs to incorporate all that is good, and accept that having an in-your-face popup, that could potentially mean DC gets a HUGE increase in traffic (Or at least a huge amount of potential towards free advertising).
-Stephen66515 (March 28, 2015, 06:24 PM)

Some spit-balling here: if you must have these buttons, I would update the profile pages here at DC and have check boxes (default enabled/disabled/cookie) close to the 'Post' button that way it is easy to share your own posts on a forum thread and if you have nothing to add to the thread you could add buttons to the first post. Or make a DC share button that shares automatically with the 'socials', according to the configuration on your own profile page. That way you could get rid of the bar, but not give up on the sharing functionality...for those that care at least.

Do you mean like what was there for the ads?  Where a user can choose if they want to see them?  If so, I would be happy with that!

If you really want to keep social-media-sharing buttons, please make it 100% DoCo-hosted. The traditional "use script from external source" is a big, big, BIG no-go, as their main purpose is not to make sharing easy, but being tracking beacons.

Also, this site is not inhabited by morons who don't know how to copy/paste an URL, so I don't really see what value they add.

This is one fact I overlooked when bugging mouser  :-[ Completely forgot about the information they send back to their servers to track things.

To be honest, I do really like the bottom bar ones (I did like the popup one but it really is "to each their own" - I seem to be the minority here haha

Looks like Ghostery took care of them, so they do not bother me :P.
Ghostery took care of them for me too, but anything that is blocked by Ghostery is a thing i do not want on DoCo.

This.  I whitelist DC currently.  And my ghostery count has always been at 1, so it's not been a problem.  Now it's at 4(!).  If it's hosted at DC, it's not really a concern... but just like with GHacks (and thankfully he put another way to support the site other than not blocking ads), if it's hosted elsewhere I'll have to start, which would be a sad day. :(

What is the purpose of sharing on other social media is my thought?  Is there a viable reason?  Or is it just because everyone is doing it?  If there's not a reason for it- and it's just to follow trends, then why do it?

And, just a suggestion- there's a lot of hyperbolic pejorative above- can we tone it down?  Because the reason for a discussion is to bring all opinions together and discuss, and that's the way it's normally done around here, and I appreciate that.

For me (at least), Social Sharing gives a way to really get word out quickly about a subject...I have used it many many times, and a lot of websites find it actually increases their notoriety.

I know my post up top may seem harsh, but it was worded that way to spark conversation, nothing more, nothing less.  Mouser knows I am just being honest :)

OK, This was nagging by me...for several notable reasons:

1. DonationCoder.com is currently running in 2002 mode.  Yes a lot of people here hate Facebook and Twitter and Google+ and any sort of social media...but even those who do cannot honestly say that they are not a fantastic way to get attention for a website/project.

2. This actually proves my point about mouser always hating change.  Ay time there is an experiment on the site, or something that could work fantastically well...It is always lead with "I will not be keeping this" "I hate this" blah blah blah...mouser...it's 2015...This is the norm.

Think about it this way...On average, people on Facebook have around 300-500 friends...so...if one person reads something on DC right now...unless they can be bothered going through the rigmarole of Copying the URL, going to Facebook/Twitter, pasting it (or shortening it first on Twitter) then posting it...they are simply not going to share it...but with the buttons that are currently on DC now (After I bugged you enough for you to add them!), it is a simple 2 click procedure.  You know how many people use these buttons?  Do you know how many more hits website get because they have sharing functions?  You probably don't because you have an intense hatred for change and future-proofing.  1 person clicking share, could potentially reach 500 friends...if 2 people also share from their friends (going on the basis of 500 average friends) - that is a reach of 1500 people...from one person clicking 2 buttons...which...I am sorry...but at the moment, DC simply doesn't get that kind of coverage because people just are not going to go through the shit of copy/pasting links every 5 minutes if there are a good few topics they feel their friends may like!

"Personally I find it too much in your face distracting"

Yeah, Because you live in 2002 and don't accept change.

"I'm open to adding some very subtle extra button somewhere that pops up a menu"

You mean like the one that used to be on DC...the one that nobody used?  Oh yeah...they didn't use it because it was VERY SUBTLE and NOBODY KNEW IT WAS THERE!

Not quite...

$3,500, not $3,5000 ;)  I think mouser got a little too excited lol

I don't see that blue bar. Or at least not with the learnable membership link in it.
 (see attachment in previous post)
I think Stephen was saying that there is no special affiliate link on the Learnable site. It just links directly to Bluehost.com. No affiliate link is used so that Bluehost will show the Learnable offer.

Exactly that Deo.  I see the price as $3.50/month which just seems to be a normal discount available as a completely separate entity to Learnable.  I see NO reference to Learnable on the site...was expecting a link like... www.bluehost.com/learnable but tiz not to be.

Obviously only pointing this out so those who want this offer can actually find it  :D
