Living Room / Re: Congratulations Terrorists, You are getting what you want!
« Last post by Renegade on January 13, 2015, 06:02 PM »
Just that there's times when some of what gets posted (mostly by Ren) feels a lot like it's basement baiting. ;)

Meh... You're just sore that it's illegal for you to collect rainwater, plant tomatoes, have the wrong kind of grass for your front lawn, water that front lawn, not maintain that front lawn, etc. etc. :)

But, I digress. This thread is very much off topic.

One point that should be brought up is that in terms of entropy, both encryption and compression look about the same. They both aim to maximise entropy, though there is a stronger emphasis on this in compression. Still... If I sent a compressed file with no extension and deleted/altered the header, you'd have a hard time knowing which it was.

Using compression schemes like PAQ8PX would also help. (Or high-compression algorithms that are very CPU inefficient.)

Can't resist 1 more...

Also, it's impossible. HTTPS, TLS, etc. etc. etc. He's proposing on breaking everything as what he's proposing isn't possible. And people will just use something else, like "F*** Cameron Chat" or something.

I'm friggin' dying to comment/rant on this... I'll restrain myself... (Damn you Stephen! :P )

It's ridiculous. For countless reasons. I'll list one...

For those of us that communicate electronically with sensitive or confidential business information, it is entirely reasonable to encrypt our communications.

I'm dying here...

Got my popcorn. :)

You know that popcorn is GMO, and contains secret messages! You're a courier for anonymous!
:D   ;D

Damn. Conspiracy parody humor is even more fun than the things themselves! It's like Nathan Poe made his law while time traveling to talk to Edgar Allen Poe!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law
http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe

Heh! Absolutely!

Sometimes it's hard to really go over the top so as not to trigger Poe's law. There are a truckload of people that really are serious about some really wonky things. Hollow Earth? It makes for good fun. There are a lot of very real things in history that are wonky beyond belief though, and trying to drag up some simple facts on some topics will freak people out -- invariably they think you're just a nutcase because they're unfamiliar with much history. e.g. USS Maine (and here), Tuskegee, Operation Northwoods, Gladio B, Gary Webb, etc. Just a few years ago if you said that governments were spying on people, you'd be called a nutcase.

Just wait until people find out about GMO Epicyte corn. ;)

AJ's reputation stops a lot of people from actually listening to what he says. The majority of his show is just news articles from AP or Reuters or Al Jazeera or whatever, and then he comments on them. Often in a rant. :)

James on the other hand is very articulate and calm. He's also much slower to pass any kind of judgement/verdict. When he does speculate, he's clear about that.

There are other journalists and pundits that I like, e.g. Michael Snyder, "Tyler Durden", Luke Rudowski, Dan Dicks, Peter Schiff, Jeff Berwick, Tom Woods, Lew Rockwell, Bruce Levine, etc.

I don't agree with everything they all say. That's one of the problems with how a lot of people view XYZ - they seem to feel that they need to agree with XYZ 100% or hate them. Heck, I like Bernie Sanders but I disagree with most of his ideas. Same for Alan Grayson - I like the fellow, and he has a lot of good ideas, and a lot of bad ones as well.

But, it's nice to see more and more variety in media springing up. MSNBC, CNN, BBC, ABC, etc., are all pretty much useless tools now. PressTV is probably more reliable than the BBC now.

So...who owns the shark?

The FBI says it's North Korea.

Yes, and - being under alien (mind) control - they used alien technology to HacK the shark and make it attack the cable.

 :D

Once again illustrating the inter-dimensional aspect of the alien Illuminati reptilian overlords and their ties to communism! And Jews. Marx was a Jew. And Trotsky. Alien Illuminati reptilian overlord shape-shifting Jews! Operating out of communist North Korea! Coincidence? I think not!

And sharks are lawyers... lawyers are Jews... Coincidence? I think not!

Is that a kipa on that shark in the video? I swear it is! If not, it must have been edited out! In Hollywood! And we all know what that means!

:P

I'm not sure whether the term "peer review" carries any real weight nowadays - or whether it retains any scientific credibility or has any real meaning for science.
Interesting review of the state of affairs:

I lost faith a couple decades ago. I've since only received confirmation in my apostasy.

Check this:

https://www.techdirt...tbook-supplier.shtml

Developers Of Chrome Extension That Finds Cheaper Textbook Prices Receives Legal Threats From Major Textbook Supplier

...

OccupyTheBookstore is a Chrome extension that allows users to find better prices on textbooks while browsing bookstore websites. Follett doesn't like this because the extension draws sales away from the stores it supplies. It sent a cease-and-desist request to the team behind the extension, asking (nicely, at this point) to knock it off or it will be "forced" to involve its legal team.

http://occupythebookstore.com/

Save hundreds right on your school's bookstore website

That could help.

Also, from the TechDirt article:

In an interview, [Texts.com founder Peter] Frank said that before today the tool had only been downloaded 200 times since it was first made available in April. By Friday evening, it had been downloaded 15,000 times.

All Follett had to do was leave it alone. Now, it's faced with a viral opponent and armed with little more than law firm letterhead.

Too funny!

(Should we have a "Streisand" thread? That could be fun!)

Your post was very timely! :D

But with the price of textbooks... sheesh... I get dizzy just looking at some of the prices.

Looks like we need to look for some obituaries soon... :(

Could be. But they'll just be accidents, like straight-laced Michael Hastings -- who didn't drink, do drugs or jaywalk, but one day decided on a nice high-speed collision with a tree - and then a couple months later hackers demonstrated how to remote control cars like Mike's, or suicides, like Gary Webb -- who shot himself in the head - twice.

Ick... IoT is going to be a dystopian nightmare. Has good applications? Sure? Has bad applications? Yup - and they're going to be at the forefront of reality. :(

In other news, Phil, Jon, Mike, and Ladar:

http://arstechnica.c...l-secure-by-default/

Ladar Levison is probably most well-known to Ars readers as the founder of the secure e-mail service Lavabit, which he shut down in mid-2013 in an effort to avoid being forced to comply with a US government demand to turn over users’ e-mails. But his latest project is a lot grander in scope than a single hosted e-mail service: Levison is attempting, with the aid of some fellow crypto-minded developers, to change e-mail at large and build encryption into its fundamental nature.

As one of the members of the Darkmail Technical Alliance, Levison—along with Jon Callas, Mike Janke, and PGP designer Phil Zimmermann—is working on a project collectively referred to as DIME, the Dark Internet Mail Environment. DIME will eventually take the form of a drop-in replacement for existing e-mail servers that will be able to use DMTP (the Dark Mail Transfer Protocol) and DMAP (Dark Mail Access Protocol) to encrypt e-mails by default.

More at the link.

http://darkmail.info

Best of wishes to them with that.

That first comment is NOT going to help the cause:
Владимир Дзюбинский Одесса, UKRAINE
PP is great - we NEED it to be able to buy drugs and arms safely in Mexico and then transfer it to Ukraine via. submarines, without the risk of being busted by cops.

What a fool! That's what Darkcoin is for! :)

But seriously, that sucks not being able to even spend your own money.
