General Software Discussion / Re: 4 (Maybe more) Absolute top go-to programs
« Last post by app103 on May 13, 2014, 06:27 PM »
Heh wow this is turning into an awesome thread! There's some *forty* programs combined of which each is part of someone's list of four(ish) super must have programs!

I wouldn't say all of mine are "super" but they are my must haves, for daily use.

You have heard that said, maybe even said it yourself. But there are those that still don't get it. Spurious Correlations will help illustrate it in a way that others can understand. 1000's of examples. Have fun finding the craziest ones.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox with multiple rows of tabs!?

Doesnt seem to be available for pale moon,

Hmmm...I am using Tab Mix Plus in Pale Moon, without any issues. It's installed primarily for this multi-row tabs feature.

  • Sage - FF extension. IMHO the only RSS/Atom reader worth considering. Light on its feet - and even lighter on features - which I consider its biggest selling point. Most RSS readers are bloated with features you'll never use. If you just want to efficiently stay on top of your newsfeeds, this is the reader to try first.

Or you can try NewsFox, which is the RSS reader that is included in K-Meleon.

For those wanting to get Surfulater integration working with Pale Moon, you can download the Surfulater xpi, here;)
Hmmm...I've had Surfulater working with Pale Moon for at least a year.

Some of us haven't been using Pale Moon for a year.  ;)

It is kinda sad...

Must be frustrating to see the bigwigs in other nominally "open" software projects cashing out for mega while you're proctoring the other "most popular" browser ever coded - and living off voluntary contributions.

I guess the folks over at Mozilla finally saw enough "morons with an entourage" getting the big bucks for crappy interface design and decided it was high time they "got some" too.
 :-\

But what will they do if Pale Moon now starts getting the big bucks because of their changes? That would be some painful irony.

Living Room / Re: Microsoft Races To Fix Massive Internet Explorer Hack
« Last post by app103 on May 02, 2014, 03:10 PM »
I don't understand why people keep calling this a Windows XP update. It's not. It uses the "Microsoft Update" automated update system to update a Microsoft product, namely IE. It's not an update to XP. It's an update to IE.

Because if it were classified as a Microsoft update for IE, as you say, covering all installations of IE 6 through 11, then those running Win98/ME/2K/pre-SP3 XP, with IE6, would also receive that update, just like XP SP3 users with IE6...and they are not. So this is an XP SP3 update.  ;)

Both pages are on the same site. What they are probably doing is basing the content that is shown to you, on the referrer. Visit the site by clicking the link on the first site and you will get shown certain content, but without a referrer (which is what happens when you type or paste the URL into your browser's address bar) you end up seeing the default content.

This is done at the server level on the 2nd site. This is not a type of URL spoofing. It can not be used to make you think you are on your bank's site by changing the URL shown in the address bar.

But your bank can use this method to choose to show you different content if you click a link to their site, coming from one of their affiliates, as opposed to typing in the URL.

If you want to block this type of behavior, you need to block sending referrer information from your browser. This may have some unwanted bad side effects, though. Some sites will not give you what you want, without the referrer being on their approved list, such as being able to download files from some sites, without the referrer being their own download page.

What I don't like is how every few seconds the CPU usage spikes up and Firefox becomes unresponsive for a second or two. What's up with that?

us being the final beta testers?

I havent tried 29 yet (but now I've checked the 'About', it looks like I will after the next restart...)

That's what I thought too, then I went and changed my settings to ask before installing any updates and then deleted the contents of the folder whose name was in all caps, sitting in C:\Users\[NAME]\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates before restarting Firefox.

That will stop the update dead in its tracks, if you have accidentally triggered it and haven't restarted your browser yet.  ;)

Firefox is no longer my default browser. Pale Moon it is.
Do you still use K-Meleon?

On occasion, I do, but for the most part, I have been using Firefox for quite awhile. It depends on the specs of the machine I am using at the moment, and what work I am required to do.

Regarding the the Firefox button changing to a "Hamburger button" - I'm running FF 28 and I don't see a Firefox button, so I guess I won't miss it.

In fact, from looking at the screenshots in the GHacks article, it looks like the only thing I'd notice in a move to v29 is the new rounded corners on the tabs.  I wonder what's wrong with my v28 install?

Oh, it would be a MAJOR change for me.

Imported my Firefox profile to Pale Moon and it is about identical now to what I had in Firefox (with the addition of the RSS icon in the address bar):

Screenshot - 4_30_2014 , 7_16_01 PM.png

And I just cleaned up the bookmarks toolbar, today. So it's only 2 rows, instead of 3 showing and scrolling to see the rest, which is what it was when I woke up this morning.  :D

But you guys should expect as much from me, knowing how I keep my taskbar.  :P

  • Filezilla
  • Paintshop Pro
  • Pale Moon (replaces Firefox)
  • oDesk's time tracking software
  • Open Office
  • Screenshot Captor
  • Foxit Reader

Alrighty then, Firefox is no longer my default browser. Pale Moon it is. Firefox shortcut moved into 5th place among browsers, after IE.

Living Room / Re: WinXP is officially dead!
« Last post by app103 on April 27, 2014, 10:07 AM »
I happened to see this sentence in the article:
" We recommend applying a patch once available."

Uh... how is a patch being made available? Is it some kind of back door route via the government's support contract?

Their recommendations of applying a patch applies to those not running XP or older. Look at what versions of IE are affected, 6-11. XP shipped with 6 and could be upgraded to 8, but not 9+. So there are other versions of Windows affected, ones that are still receiving security updates.

You did notice how he mentioned that Google has a similar issue, and that when you combine them, the attack is much worse?

Google also seems to not want to fix it.

Perhaps you need one of these for your silver   ;D

Or perhaps I just need the part that counts the coins, installed on my hubby's pockets.  :D

Well, I don't spend my change. I always throw it in a jar. Two jars, in fact...one for silver and one for pennies. The penny jar fills up, but despite never spending my change, the silver jar never does...my husband spends it on me (bus fare, laundry, whatever he needs change for). So, I will never know at the end of the year, just how much I have thrown in there.  :(

Counting isn't necessary any more because even though my bank likes me they don't trust me and they recount/rewrap.

Who cares if the bank doesn't trust you and recounts/rewraps...they aren't going to keep a running total for you, of all change cashed in over the course of time, are they? A coin bank like this would, even after you have cashed them in or spent them (as long as the battery doesn't die)

This thing doesn't actually count coins though.

There are ones that do count coins, but if the battery dies, you lose your running total.

Living Room / Re: web hosts
« Last post by app103 on April 21, 2014, 03:19 PM »
My long time friend and fellow DC member pip2kk has owned a hosting company for about 5 years (My Custom Hosting) which I will be moving all of my sites to, as soon as I can find the will to stop being lazy about it.  :-[

Not just taking his word for it, but also reading the reviews (because I'd like to remain friends with him, for many more years to come), hosting with his company is not just cheap, but also reliable. Customer service, however does leave something to be desired, if you are too inept to RTFM. He is not going to hold your hand and be your teacher.

So, if you know what you are doing, you shouldn't expect much in the way of problems. But if you are a clueless newbie that has no idea how to create a database from within cpanel and don't know how to use phpmyadmin, or don't know how to upload your files via FTP, you might be better off with someone else that charges more money that goes towards paying a larger support staff, paid to hold the hands of the clueless. (one of the reasons why his rates are so low is because he does everything, himself. But he also still has a day job, too.)

No, not quite as full featured as that one, but a beauty, none the less. The photos were not something I found on the internet. They were from someone I know, who built it.

I do have a reply to the pc->bbq grill pic, but you'll have to wait till I can finish the upgrades to my other pc before I can post the opposite direction, a bbq grill ->pc pic.  ;) (it was here, but imageshack ate it  :()

I suppose you have tried other hosting sites besides imageshack?  I presume Frozen Frogs are the same as being eaten?

I uploaded them almost 8 years ago. The originals are on my other pc, awaiting me to have both the time and motivation to get it working again.
