In the midst of the budget junk, I lost track who was worse on privacy, Dems or Repubs.

Sometimes the republicans, sometimes the democrats.  Depends on the political climate at the time and who's votes they're trying to get at the time....  Tis why I'm an independent....

I grilled the HP rep (at one of their tech shows) for an hour about that when it first came out. It works via passive polling, so the printer just checks its own Email address via the HP cloud server (which is where your print jobs are actually sent (eek!)). so over all it (ePrint) isn't really that bad.

That is until it checks it's mail and finds mail with code in it to open up your system to them... ;)

let's face it - we are the consumer - with the influence ;)
It can unfortunately be hard to find information, but if people express an interest and follow up on any info that is out there, things will get better.

I know I've avoided and supported products depending on their reputation with regard to their factories.

Let's face it anyone reading this (including me) is probably using at least one component (probably a lot more) that is a product of a Chinese (or other Far Eastern) sweatshop in the computer(s), phone(s) or tablet(s) they use.

Whevever possible, I buy "Made in the USA"  products.  Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to do.  If the government is so up on making new jobs, why in the hell don't they bring our overseas jobs back to the states?  They say we can't compete, that's BS.  If we had a "fair" trade, we would tax the hell out of the Chinese made products just the same way they do to our products.

Scanning Documents? Patent Trolls Want You To Pay Up
Though 2012 brought us some much needed movement toward patent reform, it is clear that 2013 promises to provide many of the same patent troll follies of which we've already grown tired. For example, Ars Technica has profiled a particularly atrocious group of patent trolls who are demanding payments from small businesses for committing the egregious, shameful act of... scanning documents to email.

First Sale Under Siege -- If You Bought It, You Should Own It

The "first sale" doctrine expresses one of the most important limitations on the reach of copyright law. The idea is simple: once you've acquired a lawfully-made CD or book or DVD, you can lend, sell, or give it away without having to get permission from the copyright owner. But the copyright industries have never liked first sale, since it creates competition for their titles (you could borrow the book from a friend, pick it up at a library, or buy it from a used book seller on Amazon). Two legal cases now pending could determine the future of the doctrine.

A Blight on the Constitution: Congress Approves More Warrantless Wiretapping
As 2012 came to a close, the Senate shamefully approved a five-year extension to the FISA Amendments Act, an unconsitutional law that openly allows for warrantless surveillance of Americans' overseas communications. Despite a powerful speech by Senator Ron Wyden explaining the privacy dangers and the lack of oversight in the extended law, https://www.eff.org/...antless-surveillance the Senate rejected all the proposed amendments that would have brought a modicum of transparency and oversight to the government's activities.

Living Room / Re: The temperature at which Hell freezes over - Absolute Zero?

Not 100% accurate quote but close enough for me:
Science adjusts its views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved.
-Tim Minchin

Sadly, since I had heard about dark mass and dark energy (and other dark mambo-jumbo), I've realized that current science is more like religion with pretty strange base.
Black holes with mass so big that nothing can escape… wait! They can radiate.
Lots of particles building world… wait! It does not sum up! OK now we have dark mass. Still not working… dark energy for rescue!
Nothing can be faster than light… OK tachyons.
Absolute zero? Now we have negative temperatures which are hotter than infinity. Seriously? Is it still math?

Eh, I am no longer even sure what am I complaining about.

While there is a lot of scientific value in space exploration and experimentation, and it does create jobs, it still seems to me that $2.6 billion could be better spent somehow to create jobs that get people off the dole.

Really?  Look at the last time we spent money to get people in better positions.  How did that work out?  Despite the article I linked, we really don't know with all of the politicking, and I don't think we ever will.

Sorry...that's my cynicism showing through...  :-[

Yeah, but look how that money was distributed.  In the end, it all went into the pockets of the ultra-rich, without so much as an oversight on millions upon millions of it.  Right now there is a half-hearted attempt by congress to find out where it all went and what the return was supposed to have been.   There have been a few companies that got caught red handed pocketing the money, but the mega-corporations are so much better at hiding things, and have lawyers by the dozens to help get away with it.

What I'm trying to say is, put the money to ACTUAL GOOD USE, and not into the pockets of the large corporations.

Oh I'm perfectly aware of the benefits that NASA provides.  I mean, if it wasn't for NASA we wouldn't have velcro,  just as an example.  But as much as it provides for jobs and such, it's normally jobs related specifically to the aerospace and chemical industries.  Those BILLIONS still come out of our taxes.  Surely NASA can put their heads together to better things than mounting rockets to asteroids.  That's all I'm sayin'.....

I made a poem years ago about one of my co-workers, and here it is:

There once was a man named Slimp
That had a belly shaped like a blimp
He had a big bucket head
An ass full of lead
and his eyes bulged out like a shrimp

True story, and an actual description too.  Ever played the game "Redneck Rampage"?  He looks just like Bubba, the one on the right...

I think I am the prototype on the thread's subject. I have purchased hundreds of useful programs that weren't useful at all - at least not to me. And then I upgrade to the new version, because now I have it, so I must upgrade it, or the initial purchase would seem wasted...

Just like our DC member Darwin I have now changed my ways. I am down to 145 programs installed, and haven't made a single purchase.. ehh... more than a couple of purchases since November. Hello, my name is Curt, I am a softoholic...

I have a much better idea, let's spend that $2.6 billion on our own economy.  I'm not anti-NASA or anything, but this is somewhat extreme even for NASA, especially for that amount of money that could be better spent elsewhere....

You can directly download- you don't have to use their downloader.
See the Gog downloader mode- notice how mine is off?  If you click with it off, it downloads directly.  I don't think it supports other speed up programs (especially those that download over multiple threads), but you can download directly.

Well, yes and no.  If you live on the other side of the pond or have really high speed internet service it isn't a problem.  But where I'm at, out in the middle of nowhere with satellite internet, I keep getting dropped packets and timeouts.  When you start the download you only have so many minutes (10 I think) before the URL ceases to work.  Then you have to re-start your download with a new URL.  This is to prevent people from sharing the download URL with their buddies.  Because of threshold limitations, the only time I can download without using up my limit is between midnight and 6 AM when it don't cost me, so I can't just sit around renewing the URL every time the download stops for more than 10 minutes.  If I don't get my beauty sleep I can get quite ugly.   ;)

GOG is redoing the "End of the World" sale that they had on Dec 21 - there are a bunch of bundles at 75% off and nearly all of their games are 50% off if you decide not to go with a bundle.

If you like old, nostalgic games, it's a good time to buy.  I've been replaying Ultima Underworld the past few days, and I'm loving it (but my sleep cycle isn't).

All games on GOG are DRM free.

http://www.gog.com/

I've bought over 10 games through Gog.com  The only thing I don't like is having to use their downloader, I prefer my own.

Living Room / Re: LED Quality

Something I did notice though is many replacements for Halogen floodlights in fact use slightly more power than the compact flourescent versions, although the tradeoff is the CFL versions take a few minutes to reach full intensity in cold weather while the LED lamps are instantly at full power.

I have track lighting in one of my bathrooms.  I put 5 of the the 11W compact fluorescent bulbs in it to replace the 8 25W Bombilla's.  They are truly brighter than all of the 25 watt bulbs, but it takes them about two minutes to get to a reasonable brightness, and about 5 minutes to full brightness.  That's the only sucky thing about them, they save energy but if you have anything that you need to do that requires good lighting you have to turn them on a few minutes in advance.  I guess the good thing about that is when you get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom you don't have blinding lights to contend with.  lol
