Developer's Corner / Re: Programming Ennui, Anyone?
« Last post by phitsc on October 15, 2010, 01:55 AM »
I have the opposite problem right now. I find it really hard to start private projects at the moment. I have quite a few ideas of applications I'd like to start, or programming stuff (technologies, programming languages, etc) I'd like to look into. But it's so much easier to start the PS3, or just follow a book. One of my problems is the knowledge of how much time it takes to bring something to a useful state, or even finish it. Then I compare that with the private time I have currently available and see that I just won't get anywhere with the time I could invest right now. That is enough de-motivation to keep me from even starting something.

I've been using Consolas for programming since its release and been very happy with it. The only problem I have with it is that I have to use it at 11 pt, as 10 is too small for me (while Courier New 10 is just about right). I wish Consolas had a 10.5 size.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: FARR Remember The Milk 1.1.0
« Last post by phitsc on October 05, 2010, 04:30 AM »
Hi Phitsc,

Just wondering... nowadays as ppl have more than 1 computer.. it's be great if FARR Remember the Milk could be synchronized with 2 or more PCs. Just a suggestion - perhaps with Dropbox or something with excellent syncing capabilities already. Is it possible to do something like that?

Regards
Mark

What is it you'd like to have synchronised? I mean, all the tasks come from the RTM server. And it's possible to log into your RTM account with FarrMilk from two different PCs I think.

I think he meant your opinions on the security of that setup, since you brought up security... :)

That is exactly what I meant :D

Living Room / Re: Some initial reflections on using an ebook reader
« Last post by phitsc on September 12, 2010, 04:16 PM »
I'm currently reading a novel with many parallel plot lines, sometimes 6 or more. It sometimes happens that I would like to go back and re-read something, to pick up where a plot line left, or just to clarify something. While this is quite easy with a real book, it's virtually impossible with the kindle, it's just too slow to skim through pages.

If it is private, and you want it to stay that way, then keep it locally... not online!

What do you think about keeping a journal on dropbox (e.g. a tiddly wiki)? It is encrypted. But it's a free service.

The new FARR release (v2.90.01 - Aug 18, 2010) breaks the vertical centering. I'll try to fix it (will be in a few weeks though).

Precision: FARR crashes when I "launch" the result (to open the contact sheet).

Ok, that's good to know.

I guess 'dirty little secret' is subjective anyway. If I'd keep a diary I think I'd want everything in there to be secret, also the non-dirty stuff.

So if you care to share: what would you want to have in your journal (not specific, just exemplary)? Is it more like 'stuff you've found on the net' or rather 'stuff about your boss which you've been discussing with your work buddies'?

But if they were encrypted, it could be the place for my dirty little secrets, couldn't it?

That reminds me about the fact that most email is not encrypted. Something that really puzzles me, thinking about what dirty little secrets I sometimes write in emails. :-[

What do you guys think about the security of such a site. I mean it says that only you can access your entries. But it doesn't say anything about encryption for example.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been very sick the whole week. Everything still aches but at least the fever is gone.

Concerning the crash: I don't have Outlook at home but will try to reproduce the crash next week with my company laptop.

Thanks for the report anyway!

I also use 7zip, almost always via the Context Menu.

I've also used the 7zip API in a proprietary SW updater I wrote. It almost halved the package size, if I remember correctly (from zip, which we used before).

That sounds like a problem you should never encounter with your new iPad and no one you have to share it with :).

A friend of mine first used his company's iPad to try it out. He also bought some apps and he has an iPod as well. Once he decided to get his own iPad he could just transfer the apps he had bought to his new iPad (don't know how exactly that works) and I'm quite sure that he doesn't sync his whole music library to his iPad. I've never heard him complain about anything related to his iPad in fact.

Concerning the date when the earliest decent android tablet is coming out: that's something I'd like to know as well! But I fear it could only be towards the end of year, or even beginning of the next :(

Circle Dock / Re: Change of Licensing from Version 2 (Cancelled)

PS: I still don't get why the commercial binary with sourcecode release is that troublesome >.>

because of this:

1.) We have found multiple instances of Programs that are either slightly modified versions, or exact versions of Circle Dock and Eric Wong's code. These versions are not made open source, even after approaching the "Programmers" in question, and in most cases there were attached fees for the software. In some cases Up to $50 -/+ USD
2.) Shortly after the release of v.1 and before I could get the source code up on the wikidot site. Markham and I were sent e-mails requesting the source code immediately. This individual was brilliant enough to use the e-mail for his Program for sale, which turned out to be Circle Dock under a different name. This individual not only retained a close source code, but openly admitted that is was "My Modified version of Circle Dock"

Markham and I immediately launched into some home work, and we have actually found several instances of this happening.
Although we approached these "Vendors" in an attempt to make them comply with the conditions of the copyright/left License, I was ignored at best and given terse communications at worst.
Apparently only Eric Wong can take action against a violation of his Copyright and license. Many of these individuals feel that Eric will never return, and so have proceeded to do as they will.
Some of these are now using Markhams code in their releases.

That individual is actually doing the same CD is doing. They take GPL code, modify it, try to sell it and keep it closed source. Why is it wrong for them,  then?

It wouldn't be wrong if they would start from Eric's initial CD code, then add tons of features to it, then get rid of all of Eric's code, and then charge money for that. It wouldn't be wrong if they would start from Markham's code, add no features to it, then get rid of all of Eric's and Markham's code, and then charge money for that.

Circle Dock / Re: Suggesting names for new derivitative of CircleDock
« Last post by phitsc on August 06, 2010, 02:22 AM »
Circle Dock's new name might be in Welsh: "Cylch Penfro" (Circle Dock), "Ddoc Cylch" (Dock of Circles) and "Cylch Doc" (Circle Dock) are all Welsh for "Circle Dock". Welsh, however, is a mutating language, hence the different forms which depend on how the name is used. The first form would be used as a 'standalone' name, the other forms would be used when the name appears in a sentence. That could be awfully confusing for users, so maybe not!

Hey, I already know what the first FAQ item will be: How do you pronounce ...  :D

I am very certain that the Android tablets to come will offer an experience just as smooth as an iPad's. But I seriously doubt that any of these will be available as soon as October. So go ahead and buy an iPad (or wait till October to buy one). I'm sure you will not regret it .

Personally, I'd favour the former, at least as an experiment. Would charging for CD really yield sufficient income to offset your costs? Can you be certain even of that?
-cranioscopical (August 05, 2010, 09:41 AM)

I've been asking myself the same thing. We've had the discussion elsewhere on these forums. Unfortunately, download counts say little about how many people actually use the SW, and even less about how many would be willing to pay for it were it not free. Actually, being free is a great incentive to just download it and try it out.

Obviously, you won't know if it can generate enough revenue to cover the costs (or even generate some income) until you've tried.

I'm also hearing that Android tablets may not be as smooth as the ipad, as far as UI, because the Android is not officially a tablet OS.  It can be "hacked" to be used as one, but it's not designed for that.  Is that any cause for concern?  Should I just get an ipad?

It might be one of the reasons why there are no Android-based tablets yet. I've read that Android 3, planned to be released end-of-year-ish, should be targeted at higher end portable devices (i.e. tablets).

Here's a list of iPad alternatives. No release dates though. I've read end of year for the MSI and first quarter 2010 for the Asus, but no confirmed dates yet.

Is Android better for tablets than Windows 7. To be honest, I have no idea. I'll read reviews about these devices before deciding for one anyway.

Offering software for free has its advantages too. My main motivation for doing it is that it comes with no obligations. If someone finds a bug, or wants a feature, I could address it whenever time admits, or even ignore it altogether. Or abandon the project whenever I lost interest.

I understand that the same applies to commercial software. After all, you pay for what you get at the time you buy it. Nevertheless, I think I would feel obliged to support the software.

Obviously, the situation changes if you're spending more money on a project than what you think it gives you in return. And I'm not only talking about donations, but also about doing something you have fun doing, doing something which you can learn from, the regular pat on the shoulder, nice word from your fellow forum friends.

So I definitely support your decision to get rid of the initial Circle Dock code and release it under a different name, although, admittedly, I'm not a Circle Dock user :-[
