General Software Discussion / InfoQube - Vote for your most desired features
« Last post by tomos on November 02, 2009, 09:34 AM »
I quote Pierre from the IQ forum:

Vote for your most desired features
[you can suggest features too]

What features (new, changes, bug fix) would you like implemented in InfoQube ? Now you and others can propose new features and vote for them. This will guide us, and together, we'll make InfoQube, the best Information Manager System!
Click here to access the feature list.

This feedback system is powered by UserVoice. You don't need to register/login to use it (it identifies you by your IP address). If you do register, there are some small advantages. Either way, you are entitled to 10 votes.

Living Room / Re: Seriously, wtf is going on with Apple's Mac vs. Pc ads?
« Last post by tomos on November 02, 2009, 08:23 AM »
It's interesting there is a blue screen [...]
it's the cliché isnt it - well, the mac propaganda cliché I mean.

It was the only one of the icons though with character, and is very lovingly drawn - all the other icons (all mac) look pretty much like something from a mac catalogue. Maybe the illustrator has a subconscious or deeply supressed love of 'pc's :) disguised by a blue screen :D

I thought I'd post here and leave the serious mac vs. windows debate to the other thread
I was looking for icons for a couple of filetypes and came across this beauty

Generic_PC_395933989.png

I really like it, unfortunately I dont use large icons now but I'm saving it up (it's a bit lost at small size)

Ironically it was in with a bunch of very slick looking 'Macintosh icons' ('Generic PC' it's called). I think the 'PC' one is the only one with character though...

Hey, maybe it's really cool - to be uncool ;)

I think I've made it already but in case you didnt understand it:
the point is that your response (to Innuendo) was bitchy & I was wondering why

What's important to me with an imaging programme is that it doesnt backup the hibernation file (2GB here) and the paging file if you have one on the C drive. Incremental backups are a big plus. Beyond that, of course (as mouser says) that it really works :)

Why no one mention Privatefirewall? Is free for private and business use though not listed at such by Matousec site. http://www.privacywa...rsonal_firewall.html program as ugly as website, but I think only firewall I have tried where I did not notice it was running. HIPS stuff dont work with 64bit but some might just want a good old firewall.

I think there's two things going on here -
there's been a good bit of gratuitous bashing etc, but, on the other had,
I thought that the responses to both those articles were actually quite reasonable (in fairness, one article wasnt really about mac vs 'pc' at all).

I have noticed in comments on any articles I've read about the topic that the mac users who respond are very reasonable and practical and NOT fanatics. Maybe that's part of the problem here - there arent really any mac users involved in the thread.

Was it last year that nontroppo moved to mac and wrote some very impressive stuff here about the OS.

Latest version (2.75) has improved save to PDF features in scanning functions.

look forward to trying that out :-*
just to report though - it's not being offered via check for updates or via dcupdater
(my version here is 2.72.01)

These image backups are huge. I don't have an external HD that has triple the space of the current HD.

Using a backup software that compresses backups and can do incremental backups:
I just checked & have 3 full backups and 14 incremental backups (so you could really call that 17 backups) - they take up 30GB space.

Atwood on PCs vs Macs. Oldie but goodie
the comments are more informative (both sides) and entertaining than the article itself (a good few from this year actually).

there's a link in the comments there for this NSFW article "Announcing the new apple iProduct" - doesnt look NSFW but some of the text is of a delicate nature :)

I just did my first restore a few months ago - was very nervous but thankfully it worked
I'll have to take your advice mouser and get myself another drive to restore to.

I'll probably just stick another drive in the computer - it'll be a third drive; I might, as suggested, get a rack
I love hard drive racks and the new sata racks are completely trayless and as easy as can be to use.
can you recommend one mouser ?  a search for "hard drive rack sata trayless" at NewEgg just gives three iStarUSA products which sound suspiciously like they only available in USA or N.America..

I'm wondering -
if I were to install Linux-(or whatever) on a machine and back up any important data &/or keep it on a separate partition:-
Can I do regular image-backups of the OS so that if something goes wrong I can just restore the last functional version of the OS?

That way I wouldnt have to try figure out how to fix "a python backtrace when one of the thousand front-ends coded in it inevitably goes bottom-up, for example".

There is little reason that software should be treated differently than other commodities (unless you want to get into the open source and FOSS debates  :P ) DOpus is, if not the most expensive, among the most expensive of its kind. Whether the feature set justifies it and sets it apart from others of its kind is only up to each individual user.

well said :)

I think cost-wise that XYplorer at current lifetime licence for $44.95US is very worth snapping up. I do miss some things from DOpus (didnt upgrade to version 9, bought XY instead) but I suspect I'd also miss things if I was migrating the other direction. XY is much more affordable and being developed very actively.
If I had the money though, I'd buy both :D
