I like the idea that AJAX has another acronym to decifer.

Competition time - who can come up with the most convoluted (but genuine) acronym? Maybe this should be a new thread (if I can be bothered).
-Carol Haynes (July 17, 2008, 05:15 PM)

PHP is an infinitely looping (recursive) acronym. It stands for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.

And I'll quote the first line, because a lot of the times when I'm "stuck" on a programming issue I can't figure out, I end up thinking of the solution in the process of describing the problem to someone I'm asking for help.

Well if you're in the mood for board games that you can play by e-mail (turn-based) or even live, I'd recommend GoldToken.com.

GoldToken Games List.png

They have a version of Scrabble called Grabble as well as other games such as Chess, Checkers, Four In a Row, BattleShip, Trax, Dominoes, Rock Paper Scissors, Yahtzee and more.

GoldToken is the official home and playing site of the:

    * Game Federation Association with the The Game Federation Association Club
    * American Checker Federation with the The ACF Club
    * New Zealand Draughts Association with the The NZDA Club
    * World Pente Federation with the The World Pente Federation Club
    * GOAMA

GoldToken is also home and playing site of the:

    * International Chess Federation
    * Kentucky Chess Association
    * The American Backgammon Association
    * The Chinese Go Association
    * Welsh Draughts Association
    * The International Backgammon Federation

I haven't really used GoldToken.com in a few years but I enjoyed it while I was there.

Full Disclosure: I am one of the co-founders of the website, my brother is the other. I personally haven't done much for the site since about 2002 and I don't gain anything for telling you folks about it. My brother doesn't get anything either, as it's now owned and operated by another person.

Living Room / Re: Radiohead Nude - by Epson, Hp, Spectrum & harddrives
« Last post by Deozaan on July 14, 2008, 01:44 PM »
okay, when I first saw this -
I thought the guy is nude doing this performance - no big surprise - he's been to Art school...
after seeing the video - with the title "Big Ideas (don't get any)" I presumed this to be the name of the song and I was thinking, so, how do we know he's actually nude while doing all this  ;D  ...

It's the song "Nude" by Radiohead. :) Part of the lyrics say "Don't get any big ideas. They're not gonna happen."

The first time I saw this I wasn't that impressed for some reason. I didn't like how it took until about 1:30 before I could even recognize the song. But that was last night and it was late.

Now I just skip to about 1:10 and enjoy the video. It sure is neat!

The problem i had was that the bottom alignment was off for me...
writing on lines is a lot easier then writing on imaginary lines. is there a way to actually include the line in the template and then exclude the line in post processing?? Just a thought.

Plus, what happens to the signature at the end? Can we use that somehow? It's not clear from the font itself.

If it's the same as Scanahand, then there should be an option to print faint guide lines for your letters.

As for the signature, you use the ^ (shift-6) symbol to show the signature.

EDIT: Okay, I checked it out and the template doesn't have an option for guide lines like Scanahand does. I've uploaded a template from Scanahand with the guide lines.

Living Room / Re: Six Free Online Storage Services
« Last post by Deozaan on July 14, 2008, 12:28 AM »
Is  mybloop.com a hoax? Unlimited file storage?

-Its desktop application also installed Dealio tool bar and some search setting tool without asking me. It was greyed out in the installation window.
-When I tried to upload a file that is 40 mb it kept crashing.

This reminds me of an e-mail service that launched a couple years ago just after Gmail was hitting it big. It boasted 30GB of e-mail storage. A friend (who will not be named to protect the guilty) and I decided to benchmark it because we couldn't believe someone was actually offering 30GB, and repeatedly sent very large attachments to our trial accounts to try to fill up the space.

I think it broke my friend's account at around 500MB and he wasn't even able to log in to delete the extra files. Not only that, but he later discovered that the whole system was basically a Squirrel Mail with a new CSS file to make it look like the guy created the whole service himself.

A quick Google Search and Wikipedia let you know that the 30gigs.com service has been discontinued.

If you're working with 2D Objects, then Torque Game Builder should be a sufficient engine as far as collisions are concerned.

But it might be a little difficult to figure out the networking parts.

I hope you kept the ram!
-cranioscopical (July 13, 2008, 05:29 PM)
Why? EDO RAM is pretty useless to me these days, and I really couldn't be bothered going through the hassle selling it :)

I'll forgive you for not getting the (hilarious) pun as I'll just blame it on you being a foreigner.

A Ram is a male sheep.  :P

ankama games started with an MMO and did ok :)

Huge undertaking, indeed but would be awesome.

Yes, but I think Ankama also had a $1,000,000 budget to make Dofus with.

Way too easy. Except the random boss fights where there is no predictability of what it's going to make you press and how fast.

It quickly goes from a game of skill to a game of twitch reaction when it transitions to a boss battle.

General Software Discussion / Re: OH NO! Its the end of Windows 3.11!
« Last post by Deozaan on July 12, 2008, 01:36 PM »
why would you need Windows 3.11? can't you play those DOS games in... well, DOS? :P

Maybe. I was fairly young in the Win 3.11 and DOS days. All I really know is that the command prompt in WinXP is just a fake DOS, but the command prompt that was available when we had Win3.11 had all the old drivers and things that games were made for back in the day.

What kind of an MMO? MMORPG? MMOFPS? MMORTS? Another Social MMO Virtual World?

Most people who try to make an MMO as their first game fail miserably because of how complex it can be.

Carp! I need to find a an old copy of our Windows 3.11 diskettes so I can set up a VM and play old DOS games that don't work with DOSbox.

I have 2 nvidia graphics cards, each with 2 DVI connectors.  I think its one GT8600 and one GT8800, all four running at 1600x1200 (no SLI or other special connection).

So, why the powerful video cards if not for gaming?

Most places will let you get a replacement monitor if there are more than 10 dead pixels. I'd look into it and get them replaced if possible!

Living Room / Re: Down for everyone or just me?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 11, 2008, 01:43 AM »
The problem is that whenever I try to use DownForEveryoneOrJustMe on a site that isn't loading for me, I get some server error 505 or something and some text about Google.

I assume that means it's down for everyone, but don't you think it should say so?
8172
Just tried 360Desktop.

There's an option to keep it from moving your desktop icons off the screen which might solve nudone's problem, but I haven't yet figured out how to disable the stupid panoramic background images that it decides for me to put on my computer.

I also didn't like how it didn't ask me where to install it. I just agreed to the terms and it automatically installed everything by itself, taunting me the whole time by saying "Now installing with the options you selected."

I used it for a couple of minutes but I think it's going to be uninstalled now too.
8173
Finally! The only improvement mine had was the beak. Good job

Thanks. Yeah it took me a while. I had my hard drive fail that had my Spore Creatures on it, which (hard drive) took nearly a month to replace. Then I moved nearly 150 miles. And now I finally have my computer up and running again and connected to the internet.

Phew!
8174
Now that I now how to rotate the beak, I've fixed up my Cody creation a bit and shot some new videos of him dancing around and striking all the poses.

Cody the Doco Bird.png

It split off after 2 minutes.

EDIT: Added thumbnail image and both parts of the video are now uploaded
