Asus Padfone: (phone+tablet)

That looks decently interesting and similar to the one from AT&T.  But more interesting is the attractive woman with stickers directly on her artfully exposed flesh (?)

Just to be clear, I carefully phrased my post because I'm quite unrabid, maybe through indolence, maybe through rugged individualism. I clearly said it's a rival...the list was evidence of that. My point 1 addressed MY preference and why.
My post didn't seem worth getting excited about really.. this isn't a zdnet type forum after all.

I wasn't getting excited by your post (which was the reason for the  ;D) in there.  It's just that list is the same one circulated for a while, and a list of features isn't an argument, at least IMO.  It's useability and what's useful to you, which is where my buying into it the first time before I had actually used it was a factor.  So in the same manner that your post wasn't anything to get excited about, I wasn't getting excited.  ;)  And I'm not sure where the zdnet forum bit comes from...

2 points...
1. I don't think I'd consider a tablet without a usb port. I have an iconia (A500) and I can, and do
- plug a logitech mini receiver for a mouse into it  when needed
- when i bring it to work, I can grab a usb keyboard lying around to plug into it
- connect my olympus camera directly to it to transfer photos
- record tv programs from my tv onto a usb drive and then plug that into the tablet to watch
- plug in an external hard drive containing pics or music
2. Does it rival the ipad2? I grabbed this list from somewhere.

RAM  512 MB iPad2 vs 1 G Acer
No USB port iPad2 (need external sd/usb adapters *) vs USB port Acer
No SD Card slot iPad2 (need external sd/usb adapters *$29) vs SD Card slot Acer
No HDMI output port iPad2 (need external adapter $39) vs HDMI output port Acer
No Camera flash “bulb” iPad2 vs Camera flash “bulb” Acer
Camera Rear less than 1 MP (0.92) iPad2 vs 5 MP Acer
Camera Front less than 1 MP (0.7) iPad2 vs 2 MP Acer
Speaker 1 iPad2 vs 2 Speakers Acer
No Browser Tabs iPad2 vs Browser Tabs Acer
No Adobe Flash Player iPad2 vs Adobe Flash Player Acer
Requires iTunes even for file transfers iPad2 vs Normal file transfers – USB, SD card, etc. Acer
Wifi Price $567 iPad2 vs $449 Acer Iconia A500
Screen 1024 x 768 iPad2 vs 1280 x 800 Acer
GPS iPad2 3G Only vs Acer GPS w/Wifi

Weight doesnt seem all that different to me, the screen on the iconia looks fine when i watch or read stuff on it.
Since I have a 3G phone which I'm always carrying, and dont want TWO phone accounts/data plans, I prefer to use tethering than have a wifi enabled tablet
So I'd say the iconia clearly rivals the ipad2, except perhaps in "cachet" .

These have all been brought up before.  And I bought into it the first time.  But I can say after having one for a while, none of those are really issues in everyday use, at least for me.  And no, you don't need to use itunes to transfer.  The rabid anti-pad knee jerk reaction is just as annoying personally as the rabid apple apologists.  In the end, they're all tools (though less so than some of the users  ;D), so use what you want, and let the money do the talking, IMO.

Google Apps looks good for basic files, but in practice, I've found it consistently terrible. And I'm certain that I'll wake (again) someday and find that the geniuses at Google have disabled my account without warning, locking me out.

OT: They locked you out before?  Did you ever find out why?  And how did you get it back?

Our definition of handle (I see that you classified the sides as 'rails') differs.  Using the center seems counter-intuitive, as you have to turn your hand to a weird angle to even use it.
Our knuckle-dragging primate ancestors would dispute that* :D

Not a weird angle at all - the hold is the same most people use to climb a ladder.
[/quote]
You don't really carry a ladder- you climb it.*  A better comparison would be a briefcase, which has a handle that runs parallel to the body.

To each his own, I guess, but I use the side handles depending on which side I'm carrying it on, and I don't have the problems that you enumerate.

The profile of the side rails is the same as the handle so it wouldn't make any difference.
I guess it does as I never noticed what you talk about.  Could it be because of the angle of carry or the space available?  I don't know, but it carries ok, and the load seems distributed well when I carry it.  Again I shrug. :)

*And when you do carry it, most people carry it by the sides, not the rungs... :)

Carrying it via the central handle, (not the rails on the side), the handle 'works' well - very strong - but the rectangular profile of it is uncomfortable in your hand.  The corners of the profile cut into your palm/fingers because it only has about a 3-4mm, (if that), radius on the edges.

Our definition of handle (I see that you classified the sides as 'rails') differs.  Using the center seems counter-intuitive, as you have to turn your hand to a weird angle to even use it.  To each his own, I guess, but I use the side handles depending on which side I'm carrying it on, and I don't have the problems that you enumerate.

I'll definitely be getting a better discrete GPU, but I think the integrated one will suit me just fine for at least a few months.

Be on the lookout at that GPU.  It seems to have rebates/sales more often than others, at least in my experience following the prices for a few months.  That was one of the reasons that I bought it; my final price on it was $120 after sales/rebates.

Except that Am I a commercial user or a home/academic user?
This is particularly irksome.
If I buy a license (in my personal capacity) to use at work, I will have to pay the commercial price.
And what if your primary use is for home... but it's useful for one thing that comes up later for work?  That is pretty irksome.  I suppose they are trying to not be taken advantage of, but I personally don't think that's the way to do it.
Get your job to cash out for a pro license? It's not a lot of cash if it means productivity boost.

It's the principle of the thing, not the cash.  And while it's true that you could very well just not worry about that provision of the license... again, it's the principle.

I've been told the only differences between a traitor, a rebel, and a revolutionary are:

  • who you asked
  • whether or not they were successful
  • and the amount of popular support they received regardless of the outcome

I think there are a couple more factors not enumerated, i.e. the timing of the asking, and who is doing the asking.

Nope, that part is completely irrelevant. It is all a matter of observation and people talking among themselves (no power plays or players in sight).

You mentioned Egypt. When the people there revolted and took to the streets, the world at large said Hay, good for you.

Conversely, when the tali-ban decided to make a point it was much less well received.

Tis really quite that simple.

Those parts are not irrelevant, as shown by how different anonymous surveys are than ones that are not, and the difference in someone asked about a revolution before and after it happens that is in the middle of the revolution.

And when someone honest tries to hold corporations and politicians to their lies, they promptly get asked to leave the building:

In some cases, yes (note the addendum at the bottom).  But if you truly believe in it, then you don't want to work there anyway, no?  So why not ask?

Handle is extraneous in my view, but you may like the aesthetic, heh.

Didn't see this before.  The handle actually isn't extraneous in my experience.  It is *very* well built, and the handles have a metal core, even for being plastic.  It's come in really handy (no pun intended), and I'd not even considered that factor when I purchased it.  It's a very good case for the price point.

1. I have this case, and it's awesome!  It's to a large extent plastic, but it doesn't have that plasticy feel; it's very solid, while not being as heavy as some other cases.  The lights are great(they aren't really christmas lighty, and can be turned off), and it was very easy to work on.

Is the case noisy or quiet or what?

Most of the time, I don't even hear the computer running.  I'm not sure if that's a factor of the case or not, but I hear my other computer running all the time.

My Specs:
ProcessorIntel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52400
MotherboardGIGABYTE GA-H61M-D2P-B3 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Intel Motherboard
RAMG.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH
Hard DrivesSeagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM/ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
DVDLITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98 LightScribe Support
Video CardXFX HD-685X-ZNFC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
PSUCORSAIR Builder Series CX600 (CMPSU-600CX) 600W ATX12V v2.3 Active PFC Power Supply

But I'd still go for a Radeon 6850  :)

This.  Being a gamer, I *know* you would have appreciated the increase.  But then again, I know that I'm upgrading my other computer in the next couple of years (this one replaced my laptop) so I went with the i5 so I could get the GPU.  But I am enjoying running 1680x1050 in everything with minimal slowdown :)

The only bad thing I'd have to say about it is that the carry handle is not designed for human hands - its cross-section is equivalent to a piece steel rectangular tube and the corners dig into your hand.

How were you carrying it?  I carry it by my side, using one handle or the other (not both), and it works quite well.  I also love the 4 front USB ports - I've never had that many.

Case: $90 for COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP.
CPU: $220 for Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core.
GPU: $170 for ASUS EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2 Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16.

I just went through this, and with a similar level of involvement.  I've snipped the areas I'll talk about...

1. I have this case, and it's awesome!  It's to a large extent plastic, but it doesn't have that plasticy feel; it's very solid, while not being as heavy as some other cases.  The lights are great(they aren't really christmas lighty, and can be turned off), and it was very easy to work on.
2. I got the i5-2400 for about $60 less.  I actually did some comparisons, and the difference between the two wasn't worth it to me, looking at the benchmarks.  Looking at newegg now, they don't have a deal like the one I was able to get, so I guess you're looking at a difference of $25 which isn't that much money.  But if you can find a similar deal, I'd say don't exclude that one.
3. I bought this exact same video card.  It's worked well in all of the games that I've played (and of course otherwise too).  It's in the sweet spot of price vs. performance for me; I benchmarked it also against similarly priced cards, and it compared favorably, even against higher priced cards.

Look at that, and you'll find working within the system to improve said system is a very difficult job for people with these insights and skills.

I think this quote will shed a lot of light on the true level of belief.  When people took to the streets in Egypt and the other countries of the Arab Summer, they took a difficult route because that was the only way to get things accomplished, and was based on something they believed in.  People died for their cause, and did so because they believed- but didn't cause harm to someone else doing so.  They broke the law of their country, but not the reasonable laws of the world at large.  Is the use of hacking as a tactic because its too hard to work on the inside, rather than it not being feasible?  Are the laws that are broken reasonable to be broken to the world at large because they're too restrictive to any attempt at change?

I've been told the only differences between a traitor, a rebel, and a revolutionary are:

Though, I do not think hacking web sites is the proper reaction. The "responsible hacker" should work on something positive and develop technologies that are resistant to misuse.

This is the part I agree with.  People compare this to other revolutionaries in other areas, but I think if true scrutiny was given to the similarities, there would be one key difference- the other people in question didn't have any other valid recourse within the strictures they'd been given.  There have been an abundance of constructive things within the system that have had real promise- the only problem has been they become part of the system rather than working to change it, IMO.  But they still serve as examples of the ability to work within the system.

I guess I'll come down on the other side of the fence, because while I don't blithely use any services (my drop box never held important data) JungleDisk has saved me more than once, and Google Documents has definitely facilitated a lot of the work that I've done.  It's just like anything else to me- a tool, and one that is to be used when appropriate.

What is the advantage of BrowserID over OpenID?

OpenID has been criticized in the past for its failure in solving certain security as well as privacy problems. For example, your OpenID provider tracks your activity every time you use its identity to log in any site. Supposedly, BrowserID solves this, but this is a new standard that has not been subjected to a thorough analysis, so the advantages may be a moot point.

If you're concerned about that, you can easily set yourself up to be your own provider.

And reading that differences between the two, I actually don't like any of their talking points.  I don't *want* my information, even my e-mail, associated with my login.  I want the login dialog to come from my domain, rather than some other location I don't control.  And as my own provider, I don't have to worry about the tracking part.

We need a thread here for people to put their names in associated with their username on DoCo.  People are adding me left and right, and a lot of them I don't recognize.  And with no way to send someone a message associated with the add, there's really no way to know who anyone truly is.

Thoughts?

Personally, I like the idea of OpenID.  I just wish more sites would support it.  :-\
